I came here with my mom to enjoy a nice dinner after a long week. We walked in around 4:45 and we were the only ones there, though it soon filled up while we were there. The dining room was elegant yet cozy, with great lighting. The staff was also very friendly and our waiter was very helpful in aiding our choice. We ordered the Focaccia bread, the salmon momtadito and the tonnarelli as our entree. The focaccia was the only dissapointing item as it was very basic in my opinion, which isn't bad but just nothing exciting to write about. The appetizer, the salmon montadito, was probably my favorite item of the night. It was served on focaccia bread and drizzled with a truffle honey butter and sat upon a mascarapone yogurt. It was elegant and it was incredibly flavorful. The sweetness of the truffle honey butter was a great contrast to the salmon itself, and all melted together to make an exceptional appetizer. The tonnarelli was a pasta dish we split and was also very tasty. The pasta itself was a thicker spaghetti like pasta served with plenty of crab. It was tasty and it satisfied and I'd likely order it again as I will be back when my sister's visit. All in all, a great restaurant to spend a nice night right in the heart of Bellingham! read more

This evening we went to Roe for a family dinner. Hidden on the edge of downtown Bellingham this hidden spot serves up creative seafood dishes using all farm to table ingredients. We came in for an early dinner so we were really able to enjoy the rustic ambience of this restaurant all by ourselves. As soon as we sat down the waitress was attentive and ready to take our order. I order the garden party off their cocktail menu. Snap pea gin, bay leaf vermouth, genepy, saline and pea shoot? I really was feeling adventurous with this one, a regrettable mistake. The first sip I thought I was drinking sea water with a touch of olive oil in it. I never send back drinks although I was close with this one, I sipped it throughout my meal. One critique I have about the cocktail menu is that every drink was over complicated with many exotic ingredients. There was nothing for someone who was looking for a simple craft cocktail. The table shared the Strawberry Panzanella, and once again I was accosted by an overwhelming salty and sour flavor. A traditional Italian salad consisting of grilled strawberry and focaccia croutons. The lemon vinaigrette dressing on this salad was salty and sour, and very overpowering. Unlike my drink we were unable to finish this one. I ordered the Roe Burger, which I had been really looking forward to trying, thankfully this one did not disappoint. Two smash burger patties that were thin, crispy, and cooked to perfection with slices of cheddar cheese on top are then placed on a bed of classic burger toppings. Tomato, pickles, and iceberg lettuce. This burger was served with crispy fries and garlic aioli. After my fist few bites my mind was beginning to change about this restaurant. We also shared the Reuben Croquettes. A super creative and unique spin on one of my personal favorite appetizers. These little fried pocket were filled with a delicious mixture of cheese and shredded corned beef. They were garnished with a small slice of pickle which was a great touch. For dessert we decided to try the hazelnut torte which was fantastic. It had a nice crisp outer layer with a soft gooey center. Lovely flavor and texture that ended our experience at Roe wonderfully. In conclusion our experience at Roe had its ups and downs but I left feeling satisfied. If you are looking for a unique culinary experience I would give this restaurant a try. read more

My friends brought me to Roe recently - they are regulars for the Sunday happy hour and I was visiting from out of town. The staff were all friendly and welcoming. We sat at the bar and loved watching the precision and care lavished on each dish. The albacore crudo was divine - close your eyes and savor each bite. Very nice experience overall; this is a great option for dining with a multi-generational family (kids will enjoy the burger, fries, and many of the small plates/veg options; adults will be happy with the playful entrees/beverage program). The decor is charming - "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" presides over a bookcase nook; such a sweet touch. My only minor nit: the seasoning leaned a bit salty on the pastrami croquettes, the crab Hashbrown, and the baby broccoli (the bagna cauda was yum, but brine-yyy). Oh my! What to say? Outrageously wonderful! Sam was our host and Mads, our server. We got great help from them. All the descriptions and suggestions were spot on, and they were entirely accommodating. But could not have truly prepared us for the gustatory splendor. We ate: A Dungeness crab concoction that was one of the most divine things I have ever put in my mouth. Focaccia and serrano ham in an Alfredo sauce. A pear salad. Baked or fluffy air-fried parsnip chunks drizzled with honey and savory goodies. Beet salad. Now I have to own that I hate beets. I think they taste like dirt. The salad included cheese, walnuts and other good things. My first bite was delicious--smokey and cheesey. I told my comrades-in-food that the cheese was out of this world! They almost fell on the floor laughing. "You just ate a beet!" They cried. OMG, I would order and eat this whole thing all by myself. Drinks were all lovely and included Imperfect Man (rye), Francisco Sour (fabulous and matched my clothes) and a concoction the barkeep made up that was chocolatey and raspberry. All were delicious. Two delectable desserts (I don't even know what they were, but I'd eat anything here!), and heaven became even more heavenly. The ambiance was very nice--simple and lovely in its simplicity. Have been three times and each time it has been a wonderful experience. The wait staff is kind and attentive. The ambiance is modern and minimal, great for holding a conversation over a delicious meal. The food is outstanding. We've tried something different each time and are sometimes hesitant, not sure about the ingredients, but each time we've left saying "I've never had a better meal". I love that there's an updated menu with fresh local produce. Our last visit we had the halibut, Roe burger, baby broccoli, and pork skewers. The lack of pictures tells the story of how delicious everything was. I was able to capture the halibut because it was so photo worthy, but it was demolished within moments of taking this pic. Food was amazing, by far the best restaurant food I've had in Bellingham after moving here from CA 2 months ago. The ambiance is unmatched! The whimsy! The antique vintage flatware! The wallpaper in the bathroom! The service was fabulous, we had many people doting on us throughout the meal. To prepare you, the plates are *very* small and the food is expensive, but I willn my opinion, I would say this is a place to celebrate and be social. This was our third time at Roe. The place is fantastic! The food is awesome - literally. From the first bite of broccolini to the last taste of chocolate torte, we all (three of us) were in awe of the creativity, freshness, and flavor. We also had the beet salad, bauvette, gnocchi, and black cod. We all shared samples with each other and EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUS. We sat at the counter and watched the amazing chefs work their magic. The shrimp cocktail was amazingly complex shrimp flavor cooked in complex boil with a Sause with depth and Indian spice leaving you wanting more. The chicken nuggets caviar was innovative but the caviar didn't shine. The halibut was well cooked with a variety of flavors, textures and temps. The dessert cake was absolutely amazing. The black cod dish we had at Roe (tomato broth, claims, bacon) blew me away, I think about it often. Everything is prepared so intentionally, yet I feel so comfortable being here, like your having a dinner party at a friends house that's a mad cook. I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. It's our absolute favorite place to get dinner in Bellingham! Their vibe is really cute and hip, but still very authentic and down to earth. The people that work there are really friendly. The food is out of this world. I love the way they put an upscale spin on comfort food classics. I love trying their new seafood dishes that change seasonally, but highly recommend their classic burger too - so good. They just started doing brunch as well, and it's the best brunch in Bellingham. We loved it! Definitely get a reservation, the restaurant was very popular! The fries were the best we've EVER had, with the gremolata/mayo sauce. We also loved the Dungeness Crab hash brown! The hash brown was crispy, and the crab salad on top was creamy and had some amazing herb flavors. The salmon montadito was very rich- we weren't able to finish it. It had good flavors, but the soft mascarpone yogurt topped with soft (possibly raw?) salmon kind of took away any texture. The rich fattiness mixed with the sweet honey topping was just too much for us. We thought it might be good with smoked salmon instead, and maybe on a crisp crostini bread instead of foccacia. Hands down the best meal I've had in Bellingham, and perhaps one of my best meals to date. We came in as a group of four with no reservations on a Friday night, and the owner kindly fit us in at the bar which was quiet and cozy. The staff is so friendly, fun and hard working to make sure everyone is taken care of. The ambience is classy, romantic and cozy. The food is absolutely delicious!
