This place had come highly recommended secondary to their exceptional beer. Upon entering the bar, we had a pleasant greeting and our beers were poured right away. How ever, after we had received our beers we asked that the Tigers game to be turned on the TV, in which they said yes and then ignored us. We sat for 30 min with the menu closed waiting to order food and the bartender again ignored us and helped another couple. Although they eventually turned the game on for us, they never took our order and made us feel like the "out of towers we were". Most recent visit was 8/22/17. In the grand scheme of things - average to above average, but one of the better options in town. Had the Lake Superior Whitefish. True "local" type place. Pretty sure we received the "not from around here" treatment during our last visit - our food took close to 40 minutes to come out and our server couldn't have seemed more disinterested in our table. Our first time at the Library was sad. Service was slow, soup and entree salads were mediocre, burger was charred leather. We waited almost an hour for our food, with little attention from our waitress. As we sat waiting, famished, the waitress finally arrived with our meals and promptly dumped the whole tray on the floor and me. So another 20 minutes of waiting. No apolopgy, no offer to compensate us for this lousy experience, nothing. When our daughter attends MTU, we'll skip the Library when we visit Houghton 6 times a year for five years. Sign said, "sit wherever you want and make yourself comfortable". Started to sit down and was assailed by a waitress "this is reserved, you can't sit here!" After regaining my composure, I asked for suggestions. She said, "you can sit at the bar". My wife asked for beer advice from the bartender. Obviously put out, our bartender rattled off a few things I could not follow. I've never been in a "brew pub" where the staff didn't want to talk about their beer. We ordered a couple beers, didn't like them much, didn't finish them, paid and left. I have never walked away from an unfinished beer before. My fiance went to Michigan Tech and lived in the area for over 10 years and raved about this place so I was excited to try it. As a vegetarian they had two veggie sandwiches I really wanted to try but both were sold out! I was super bummed about that all I tried the caprese salad instead, pretty disappointing and bland. However, their parmesan truffle fries and drinks were on point so I'll give them that. I'll come back if I'm visiting, but I hope next time those sandwiches are available! read more

The two times I've gone here, I've wanted to like it. The restaurant is nice, but they have booths that are incredibly uncomfortable, and surprisingly small. The beer is okay, nothing to rave about. I ate a the Library Restaurant & Brew Pub on the 4th of July after a day of boating. The first thing I noticed about The Library was how truly uncomfortable the booth we were sitting in was. I'm not normally one to mention things like this, but I truly felt like I was sitting on two wooden slabs at an exact 90 degree angle. It definitely was not conducive to a good experience. That being said, the food was pretty good and service was great. I had a caprese salad and a Reuben sandwich. The Caprese was nice and fresh, with good quality ingredients which I really enjoyed. The Reuben was also good. The corned beef was well seasoned and the sandwich was perfectly crispy on the outside with a nice pile of sauerkraut that complemented the meat well. Overall, this is a good place to eat. The prices are good and the food is good. I just wish they would update their booths! read more

The Library is our routine favorite restaurant in the area. They have a wide variety of flavorful entrees to appeal to differing tastes, ranging from pizzas and burgers to seafood/fish and a handful of Indian, Mexican and Asian offerings. Flavor/taste can be spotty, depending on what you order (I will never again order their Mexican foods because the flavors are just 'wrong' to me--not bad--just not what I associate with Mexican). But, overall, we have very good food 85% of the time. Our kids love their mini pizzas and my husband practically lives on growlers of their beer that he brings home. The service can be slow at times and we've learned which servers to avoid; however, it hasn't stopped us from going back every other week! read more

Although I think they've done a great job decor-wise, the Library's food needs re-vamping. Their wide variety (Chinese, Southwest, fish, chicken, pasta, burgers, steak, etc.) means that they aren't working to specialize in one food genre. Racist server. Refused to take the menus from my partner who is African American and did not offer to refill his drink at all, even when he was sipping on melted ice water. She had no problems with serving the white college kids to our left and right and making sure their booze and drinks were tip-top perfection. Never going back. One of my favorite places in the area. The food is really good and the beer is okay. I would keep going back just because of the owner/manager. The food's good, but a little too expensive for me. Their beer is excellent, though. I'm a big fan of grabbing a sampler, and deciding which one I'm going to take home in a growler. My parents (MTU grads) love talking about how the Library used to be: dive bar with great pizza, and although they also like the beer, they're disappointed by how expensive the place is now. I agree. Really neat place! It was a little hard to find at night because the sign is on the door, but totally worth the drive around the block to find! Our server was very sweet and attentive, the food was delicious, and the atmosphere is just cool! Old books are stacked purposefully around in cubbies. There is dark wood everywhere giving it an old fashioned feel. Plus, there's a great view! We had chicken marsala, chicken alfredo, and apple dumplings. All delicious! The chicken was perfectly cooked and juicy, the sauces were flavorful, and the asparagus was cooked perfectly. Their house soup, Creamy Swiss Soup, was ridiculously good. Very unique! This is my favorite in the Houghton/Hancock area. Great place! I enjoyed Tuesday night sushi and the Ahi tuna double size appetizer. Beers are great. Their IPA was fantastic. Great pour on an Oban, single malt scotch, neat. So good, that I bought the bar staff a round. I was in town 3 nights and went their twice. Should have gone all 3 nice. Oh, and I like the music they play at the bar as well as the waitstaff. Very cozy place. They sell growlers too! read more

Stopped in at the Library after abstaining for three years after a terrible meal and service. I thought I would give the place and owner another chance; the place has a great atmosphere and possesses great potential to be a class 1 restaurant. Well, the answer was the same! I ordered a Black and Blue hamburger and fries; the burger ordered medium rare. When my meal arrived, the bun was toasted dry and the burger was well done and hard as a rock, the fries were just ok. I was truly amazed that the place was still turning out mediocre meals. I was going to send it back but decided that the best thing was to just not patronize a place that just doesn't care about delivering a good meal to its customers. I would have been better going to McDonalds. Especially considering the price of a beer, a lousy burger and fries for over $22. if I could, I would give the Library a -1 star. Tom M read more

My family and I stopped in for a late lunch. The location was a bit tricky with the hills and trying to find parking but we found a public lot so we wouldn't be on the slippery hill. The beer they brewed was very flavorful. The mixed drinks were very good too. Food was great and portions were decent. We had to take a couple meals to go. The new breakfast buffet offers the usual options. Bacon, sausage (very good), breakfast potatoes (delicious), pancakes, baked french toast apple casserole (yummy) with an option of bourbon sauce. However, the scrambled eggs are either powdered (cafeteria style) of altered liquid boxed. You can tell because the texture is grainy and has a little bit of water in them. For $8.95 you think they could use real eggs. They do this because it costs them less. They'll tell you they're made from scratch, but that is a lie. The taste never lies. read more
