I can remember many nights of hanging out here while a student at MTU. As an adult, my experience was very different. Service was less than stellar and the drinks were not consumable. We had to send our drinks back twice and our food took way too long. I understand it got crowded but even when the food was served, it arrived cold. I'll probably give it another shot when I'm in Houghton again because I loved going here so much in college and hopefully it was just a bad night.

It's honestly been a long time since I ate at the Library, but husband and I stopped in for drinks a couple of times during a recent visit to Houghton. Their cocktails are excellent! The bartender (Tasha, maybe?) was super nice and, of course, the ambience was amazing!

Service was great & food was delicious! My husband found a new favorite soup, Creamy Swiss Au Gratin. Basically a creamy French onion soup

My ahi tuna was prepared perfectly. Came with rice and choice of vegetables. The Cesar salad was huge.

Pleasantly surprised. We had an amazing meal. The service was above and beyond what you usually get a busy restaurants. Great beer choices and my mixed cocktail was fantastic. We will definitely return. Loved our table with a view of the canal.

Service wasn't the best, slow, forgetful. Hostess seemed alittle fluster with a party of 8. Food was bland. The creamy onion soup had a weird taste, almost too much pepper.

The Swiss Au Gratin soup and the Complementary Cheese Cake. The cheese cake is complementary for birthdays !

We've been to The Library several times while visiting Houghton over the last few years. Each visit was a great experience, even when they were very busy and short staffed. Our favorite server is Kirstin, she is friendly and thoughtful. The last visit was my birthday. We had the lamb chops and asparagus with raspberry sauce and fettuccine Alfredo special. 100% recommend. I ordered mine medium and they were perfect! The Swiss Au Gratin soup is also amazing, especially if you love French onion soup. The decor is, as you might expect, library themed. Lots of books and heavy dark wood, but it doesn't feel dark or drab at all! The end wall offers a full view of the river front! The brewing room is also surrounded by glass.

Waited 20 minutes and didn't even get waters. Lots of tables full of people just waiting. We left after we saw another table leaving.

Jasper Ridge Brewery feels like it should be a solid sit-down brewery experience in Ishpeming, but…read morethe execution across the board did not match expectations. On the food side, I ordered a Reuben Melt. The sandwich came out unevenly heated, with the corned beef leaning dry in parts and the rye bread slightly over-toasted on one side. The balance of sauerkraut and sauce felt inconsistent, which made the overall flavor feel flat rather than cohesive. It was edible, but not well executed. Service was slow and lacked structure. There was a noticeable delay in initial table attention, and once the order was in, there was very little communication or follow-up. The pacing of the meal felt disorganized, like the kitchen and front of house were not fully in sync. The ambiance does not really elevate the experience either. The space has the layout of a brewery-style restaurant, but it comes across more chaotic than inviting, with noise carrying unevenly and the dining area feeling a bit worn rather than maintained in a way that enhances comfort. Overall, this was a disappointing visit. The food was poorly balanced, service was slow and inattentive, and the atmosphere did not make up for the gaps in execution.

Four friends from Kansas University Law School and an internationally known author and his wife,…read morewho happen to live in Marquette, met for a Friday-night dinner in September 2025. Earlier that day we all did our book shopping at Snowbound Books on Third Street, and followed that visit by dining at The Vierling. As other reviewers have noted, the place is busy, and reservations are recommended. And as others have noted, the food is very good. Around our table we had soup (the whitefish chowder (cup, $5.75) came out piping hot - perfect with a dash of black pepper and Tabasco), some salads (gluten free, $5) - I wished someone would order the whitefish bites, but not this time. While all of us had dined at Vierling in the past, this was the first time our group was seated in the space immediately adjacent to the bar, accessed through a walkway. The space includes what looks like a still for beer or spirits, and impressive and imposing sight. We arrived at 5:30 p.m., when the space was empty, so sound levels were good. By 6:30 sound levels went up, probably due to our own conversations as well as those around us. Three of us ordered the locally sourced whitefish (grilled & lightly seasoned, $21); others ordered the grilled salmon ($21), and the beer-battered cod basket ($16.75). Those of us with room left after the entrée shared servings of chocolate peanut butter pie ($6.50, with a crushed Oreo crust, whipped peanut butter filling and fudge ganache top). Service was prompt, friendly, and everyone's order was filled without flaw. We tend to talk a lot, and I think we probably overstayed our reservation when our host explained, at close to 8:30 p.m., that the table had been reserved for another seating that evening. Our host was courteous and diplomatic, and I'm glad she spoke up, as we really did occupy the space for close to three hours on a very busy Friday night. Hope to do it again next time we're all in Marquette, but maybe be a bit more mindful of the length of our stay.
