From the moment we walked in, we were struck by the quirky decor that ties into the Keweenaw's mining history. It's charming, memorable, and adds a special local touch you don't often find. My wife was on the hunt for some Lake Superior whitefish, and The Hut *delivered*. She went with the broiled preparation and couldn't stop raving about it--flaky, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. I opted for a patty melt and was equally impressed. The marble rye was perfectly toasted, and the flavors were spot on. Service was decent overall. Our server did forget my tea, which was a minor hiccup, but honestly, it didn't detract much from the experience. The quality of the food and the one-of-a-kind atmosphere more than made up for it. The food is still amazing here-- at least the flavor. Our server, Molly E was great. The issue was the portion size. I ordered the danwich, which has traditionally been piled high and so big you would have to split it with someone or take half home. This time there was one slice of turkey, one slice of roast beef, one slice of ham, and bacon and cheese. So many bare spots and the smallest I have ever seen it there. I have heard portions are down across the board, as others have received Reuben's or other sandwiches with severely undercut portions. I hope it's something as simple as a new or inexperienced Cook, but when I asked they told me "that's how we have been making them all day" and no remedy was offered. I want to be clear that the sandwich was still great flavor wise, but the lack of meat made for a lot of empty bites with just bread and I feel as though the value for my money is no longer there. We stopped here and ordered a couple of pasties to go. The staff was very friendly and the restaurant looked very clean. We took the pasties and ate them about 30 minutes later and they were still piping hot. I am normally team ketchup, but my boyfriend loves gravy with his pasty and I have to say that their gravy could 100% make me a convert. It was so good! You could actually see little shreds of meat in it so you know it wasn't just some processed powder mix. It was the real thing. 10/10 both pasty and gravy! read more

They were slammed! July is their busiest month and the strawberry festival I'm sure added to that. The workers I could tell had a lot on their plates, but everyone was friendly and kind. They let you know approximately when you would be seated and your wait for food would be about an hour. Honestly, I would rather have my food cooked and not microwaved so I was good with that. We were seated when they said they would seat us, which was great and our food didn't take an hour. It was about 35 minutes. Everyone was working everyone was busy but yet they would stop and smile and say it's coming or sorry for the wait. My favorite waitress is Mary and I was fortunate to sit in her section. I see her as being the mom over the crew you could just tell. I could see everybody was pitching in and doing different jobs and the place stayed picked up and clean. It's a very old building so it's going to look kind of rustic anyway but yet they keep it up as best they can while they're so busy. Our food was delicious and they were generous on their portions. I love their salad salads. tonight I had a chicken salad with my favorite homemade poppyseed dressing. Which I purchased to take some home as well! I'm hoping we visited here on an off weekday evening in February. I didn't mind the unique dark ambiance here and appreciate the history of it. Our meal was simply subpar with the exception of the dessert. I ordered the Copper Country fried steak and it came with dry-tasting mashed potatoes and two very hard pieces of breaded steak. I asked if they had corn as a vegetable and was told they only serve corn on Sunday. We tried the appetizer of cheesy garlic bread with marinara sauce. It was chopped up into five or six pieces with very light cheese on top. The marinara was unique-tasting and too thick to dip into. We ate three of the pieces. We likely won't try this place again unless in a pinch. read more

This is a unique place to dine. Built in 1952 by an eccentric gentleman. He built it from the old mining materials from the centennial mine across the street. The food is always plentiful and good. It is always very busy and the staff does a great job of holding it all together. I know because I'm the owner! The Hut has been in our hands now for 16 years and it has been my pleasure to get to know our customers and all the staff that has worked for us. Post pandemic restaurant owning has been very very tough. Finding the right cooks and keeping everyone flowing in the right direction has been incredibly hard at times. BUT.... Our customers have been incredibly patient and our staff has been very determined to please them. Make no mistake about it, our customers leaving satisfied is our most important job and we take it very seriously. If a mistake is made no one wants to correct it more than us!! The money doesn't matter as much as customer satisfaction. Bottom line is WE CARE ABOUT EVERY PERSON THAT DINES WITH US. We want them to be happy. Reading some of these reviews tears us apart. This is always one of our go to destinations when in the area because of the historic building, comforting food, and friendly service. The menu offerings are extensive and served in generous portion sizes with fair pricing. Our personal favorite is the Danwich, a monster of a sandwich. The location is neat and so is the building which features a primarily wood interior with unique architecture. The restaurant has been through several changes in ownership but still offers great menu items. We are already looking forward to our next visit. read more

We LOVED this place! I will need to stop in every time I'm in the area! The restaurant itself looks like nothing has been updated since the '60s, in the absolute best way. They have a really cute walk-up window, but we ate inside and I can't imagine getting anything to go from here because it's such a cool place! The zucchini fries were nothing special and I wouldn't order them again- they easily might have been frozen and just deep fried upon ordering. The whitefish dinner though- WOW. We got whitefish at a lot of places while we were in the U.P. (because you have to!) and this was by far the best. This is one of those bittersweet reviews. I would have loved to give this four or even possibly five stars. The food was good, the place itself is really cool and unique, and the location is and a gorgeous area, especially if you go during fall. They have a bunch of great stuff on their menu and the portions are fairly good as well. However, the thing that really killed this experience and review for me, was the customer service. We waited quite a long time to receive our food. The restaurant was not crazy busy or anything either. The table was complaining that they waited over 20 minutes for someone to even take their order. All you can hear walking through the restaurant were conversations at tables about how slow the service was. If you don't have anywhere to be afterwards, and have all the time in the world to sit here and relax, then this is the place for you. But if you are in a rush to pick up something quick or sit down for a quick bite before carrying on with your day, I highly suggest finding somewhere else. What a shame! read more

My husband and I were debating driving all the way back to Houghton from our place in Mohawk because I was striking out on finding anything open at 8pm and worthwhile on Yelp. I stumbled across this place and we were so happy we stopped! My husband got "the Danwich" and I got a bbq chicken sandwich and both were great. He actually could not stop talking about the sandwich the rest of the night, haha. The sandwiches don't come with any sides, so we did order a side of fries but honestly we didn't even need them the sandwiches were so filling. And the inside is so unique! Have you visited the UP of Michigan?? If no, DO IT NOW (well when it's not winter and snowed in)... If so, did you eat a pasty?? NO?! Well stop milking Michigan of its abundant snow and take a bite into a bit of MI UP gastronomical culture and history! YES?! I hope it was here! I haven't found anywhere else in the state of Michigan (or any other non-edible imitation found elsewhere) that makes pasties like the Hut. Pasty virgin? What the heck is a pasty [PAST-ee] anyway?! Well it's your lucky day! Whether it's spelled with a 'y' or 'ie' suffix, you're going to find what I would describe as a Caucasian's attempt at an empanada or dumpling--and a pretty delicious one to say the least. A pot pie without the pot? Perhaps. A pasty is a stuffed pastry case filled with various fillings, folded and then with crimped edges to form a seal. Fillings most commonly consist of diced beef, sliced potato, onion and pepper, however other unique recipe twists have been coming abOOt like with chicken or solely veggies. Beware! It is argued however that to be a pasty it must contain potato and onion. So why in the UP? As some know, the UP is full of old copper and iron mines that kept the region booming during its "golden age" between 1890 to 1920. Miners used to bring their initialed tin foiled pasties to work and eat half of it for breakfast and leave the remainder for lunch. The pasty's dense folded pastry is said to be able to stay warm for 8 to 10 hours and, when carried close to the miner's body, could be used as body warmers. Now anyone (even you!) can be a miner on one of the many copper mine tours, without the horrors of mine work AND while taking advantage of the pasty tradition. The Hut Inn is known to be the place with the best pasties--and I'd agree. You can purchase them frozen to take home, or already made to eat in, on the go, or to reheat back at home. Whichever you choose, it is cheaper to take them frozen, yet if you're like me, I just want to dig right in! The restaurant is a cabin filled with mostly friendly locals. A site/meal not to be past up! Looking to have the full UP adventure? Then visit the Delaware Mine in Delaware, MI, pass by the Hut Inn to pick up some pre-baked pasties and then drive up the highest point on the peninsula, Brockway Mountain, to watch the sunset while eating a Yooper [U-P-er] dinner. I had my reservations because it looks seriously old. I followed the reviews from Yelp and sat down. So glad I stopped. I ordered a sandwich and salad. The salad came out immediately and the service was prompt and friendly. The sandwich was served hot and it was GREAT! It was too large to eat it all so it made a great dinner. A real gem! We stopped in for lunch last week while staying in Houghton for 4 days. First of all, the Pasties are the best! They are the same people who make the Pasties you can find on Pasty.com and we order from them via mail usually twice a winter. Best Pasties to be found! We stopped in for lunch and were greeted by a smile and the chance to pick a table of our liking. It has a very retro vibe, it isn't fancy but the food is always good. My husband had the Pasty and wel for $5 bucks? That is a steal for a filling meal. My sandwich was good as was my salad. We brought home Pasties (they had them frozen and we kept them on ice) and they held up beautifully) I highly suggest stopping at The Hut Inn if you are out for a drive or heading to or from Copper Harbor...you will not be sorry! read more

I love this place. Every year , AWESOME! I have eaten there for the last two years and haven't had a bad meal yet.

We've been eating here for over seven years and food's generally okay: nice big salads and good fish and chips (although for fish you should hit up Peterson's). But after a visit to their ice cream window, we won't be going here again. The server at the window kept her mask below her nose, except when she would pull it below her mouth to talk. No gloves, no paper covers on the straws or spoons. No signs for social distancing. Most alarming, a cook walked by the take-out window with no mask on and because one of the kitchen windows was open, it was easy to look in and see that none of the kitchen staff who were in view were wearing masks. Customers stood in the lobby, mask-less as well. I realize the virus hasn't really hit this area yet, but if they aren't getting these details right now, it makes me wonder what their management gets wrong at other times. read more
