Jim's has been a family favorite since it opened in the 1970s. A couple members of my family have even worked there at various points. Whenever I am back in town, I have to stop there to get a pizza. As for the food, the pizza is thin crust, but not cracker crust. It has a chewiness to it. The real appeal of the pizza is the sauce, which is tangy. Many pizzas I've had create sauces that are overly tomato-y and sweet. I think the secret of Jim's pizza sauce is the use of fennel seed with a saltier base. It makes the sauce more aromatic and less overwhelmingly tomato-y. Honestly, it's one of those pizzas where you start eating and then suddenly realize how full you are because you've eaten half a pizza. We typically stop there Sunday for lunch. I've discovered the biggest issue is that the restaurant is typically woefully understaffed. That's a popular time for much of the elderly population to come in so the small dining room gets full. Most of the time, there is but one teenage waitress on duty, and the poor girl has to take all orders, serve all food and drinks, answer the phone orders, handle takeout, and fill all requests as they come up. I went this last Tuesday, great food, owner even came up and talked to me and my husband while we walked in and seemed very nice. My only issue was our server... pretty sure her name was Amanda. She was very unorganized, overwhelming and chaotic, along with that she was very rude to the paying customers. Including raising her tone at us, and using foul language. Definitely will try to avoid her serving us next time, the other waitress seemed really sweet. read more

It was going on 8:30 pm and we weren't hungry yet as we were traveling and started out with a late. Breakfast and lunch. We took off from our hotel (AmericInn) to try to watch the sunset. We thought we would get a pizza to take to our room to eat when we got hungry. The pizzas are cheap. We bought the Jim's Special in a super large size ( they had one size bigger) and it was under $20. This pizza could have fed a family of six. It had a lot of melty gooey cheese on it. Usually this much cheese on a pizza is something we would ask and pay extra for. On a scale of 5 we give it a 3. It tastes good but personally I would have liked a better crust-maybe a tad crispier. But for the price and fast, friendly service I would go back again. read more

Jim's is a life saver!! While flying back home from the UP we were notified that the plane was having mechanical issues and the mechanic was 3 hrs away - which meant we were stranded in the airport without a car and only vending machines for sustenance. My coworker did a Yelp search for local delivery restaurants and came across Jim's who offered to deliver lunch to us at the airport. Thank God for Jim's! We both ordered hot turkey and bacon sandwiches which came wrapped in foil on a hoagie bun with melted cheese, lettuce and tomato - delicious! I also ordered the hot cheddar bites which consisted of breaded cheese goodness with a sprinkling of paprika(?) on top - also excellent! The next time I'm in the UP I'm going to make sure that I take a 10 min drive north from the airport and visit Jim's restaurant up in Calumet to say thanks! read more

I can't speak to the pizzas, but we had great pasties at Jim's. That was on Monday, June 21st, 2010. It happened by accident. We actually wanted to have lunch at Michigan House Cafe & Brewpub. But we could not even get seated there, so we left and walked around for a place for lunch. We stumbled onto to Jim's Pizza. Turns out on Monday the lunch special is (or was) pasties. We orded two to go and browsed the book shelves while we waited. We got our order and then headed out to find a place to have lunch. We found a county park at Eagle River right on the water. When we opened up the box to eat - WOW! Now these pasties were the real deal! Big, flaky crust and stuffed full. In Calumet visiting dads hometown. Jim's Pizza caught our eye so we went for lunch. Not a great experience at all...Four people ate and all of our food came at different times; one 15 minutes after everyone else finished eating because they forgot to make it. I even got up and refilled my own soda because the wait staff was so inattentive. One smiled at our waitress when I filled my own drink after giving up on the entire place. Kids cheese pizza was good. Sandwich was good. Chicken drummies was good. Jim's special pizza was not. It was like a deluxe elsewhere. Biggest difference was that the vegetables either came from a can or were frozen and put on the pizza. We couldn't eat the center of the pizza because it was too soggy from the water extracted from the vegetables. Even thoughs Jim's has been there forever, I'd have to recommend somewhere else if everyone in your group wants to eat at the same time...or at all. read more

Hubby ordered a small pizza and I got a fish sandwich with a cup of soup. The two gals running dining room were pleasant while busy and with busy phone were nice. Soup came first and was good but could have been warmer. We waited about 30 minutes for the rest of meal. The pizza arrived first and was lukewarm not piping hot like you would expect. Their thin crust pizza here is so delicious! Every time we are in town, our first stop is here. The restaurant is filled with books on U.P. history, which are available to purchase. I had flipped thru a book and found an old (1960's) Calumet high school flyer that had my Dad's name in it. I was able to buy it for $2, took it to my dad and he had a hoot seeing that old flyer with his name on it! The food here is great, the only downside is that soda is served by size and price, so no free refills here. So, if you are super thristy, get water! My husbands all time favorite! He can polish off more pizza than anyone I know! He's a big pizza fan and has been to many many pizza joints and this is his favorite in this area! Ordered a medium thin crust with pepperoni sausage and mushrooms for pick up. The gal said 30 minutes I showed up at 28 minutes pizza was ready I brought it back to my motel room 2 blocks away it was cold and the crust was soggy. Called to order a pizza from Jim's Pizza. After I place the order and get a total I get a call back saying that Im apparently on their block list. When I asked why she proceeds to tell me that she can't tell me why Im on the block list. I told her "No. I want to know why Im on the "block" list." She then tells me because there has been problems with your orders. Mind you The time before last that I ordered a pizza from there I ordered extra cheese and it hardly had cheese on it at all. Of course i called back and said something that extra cheese is something like $4.00. Anyway, I tell this girl I think its pretty ridiculous considering we've spent quite a bit of money there and that Id like to talk to Jim himself. She tells me that they don't know Jim's number!!! That's freaking hilarious!!! The mans name is on the front of the building and when there is an issue or problem you can't talk to the guy. Give me a break.
