I'm actually a big fan of the Library Bar. I want to say it isn't because I've been here more times on sixth than any other bar... but still it's a good bar. They have nightly specials until 11 PM which are really good and pretty good nightly specials until close thereafter. The drinks are cheap, the alcohol is plentiful and the bartenders are friendly. They really give this place a chill, dive bar atmosphere, the tables may be a little sticky but the whole ambiance kind of makes up for it. Nice bathrooms as well and not always a super long line for the women's. There is an upstairs area, but I fee like more for people spying on other people downstairs. Overall, recommended, but do realize this IS a dive bar. read more

The shelves of books in here make me laugh. That's a nice touch. Is that so that the UT kids can tell their parents "Friday night? Oh, I spent the whole time at The Library"? This place was surprisingly uncrowded around 12 on a Friday night. We grabbed our drinks downstairs (draft Fat Tire and bottled Negro Modelo for $7? Nice) and headed upstairs to watch the action from the balcony. There is a smaller bar (bottles only) up there, as well as booths and pool. It's much more sedate up there than among the throng on the ground floor. I notice that the top of the railing is angled; is this to prevent patrons from setting their drinks on it and inevitably knocking them over onto the people below? If so, smart move. Although, that railing seemed pretty rickety in general and could give way if two guys crashed into it during a fight. It's not as offensive as other raucous college bars, so I'll give them a pass for the books, the balcony, the decent beer selection, and the reasonable prices. read more

My favorite thing about this place is their name. Perfect for college kids. When their parents call them and ask where they are at, they can say The Library. Drinks and pricing are decent, and when they open the windows you get a nice breeze coming in off 6th street. If you can sit near the windows you can people watch too. My friend suggested to swing by the Library Bar to start our night on 6th. I haven't been to Austin much and I definitely haven't spent too much time on 6th so I wasn't sure about where to go or whatever. We got here around 11 on a Saturday night and the bar wasn't too crowded. I had no issues walking in or ordering at the bar. I guess the best appeal about this bar is the prices. We ordered a couple bottles of dos equis and a vodka sprite and it cost us $9 only. Holy crap! In most bars in Houston a vodka sprite would cost me at least $7-$8. Sweet! As the night progressed, the bar got more crowded as me and my friend watched the bartenders and the crowd from the 2nd story. Obviously the most popular drink of the night was their Long Island iced tea since I kept seeing the bartenders pouring four different liquors simultaneously into the glass and top it off with a splash of cola. I didn't stay too long here. After a couple of drinks me and my friend decided to check out other places but this is definitely a great place to start your night to get your buzz on so you won't have to spend too much money at the other places. read more

It seems like every time that I go to Austin I end up here. This one is much less "library" than the Fort Worth one, but is much cleaner I would wager. Each time I have been the staff has a theme. Last year was super jock-y guys. This year was thick glasses brunettes that are flirty. The bartenders were great. The prices were pretty standard for 6th street as well. What I like about this place is the upstairs area. When you walk in, head up the staircase to the upstairs bar. I have gotten the best service here. Also, doing so will allow you to sit in some super comfy booths that overlook the bar, ample TVs and 6th street. The only real complaint that I can forward is that the games do not seem to work all of the time. Beer Pong Master took my card swipe and charged me, but was in disrepair and did not allow me to play. All in all, a solid spot worth checking out. read more

I came here with my brother while he was visiting from California. I don't know if it's like this every Saturday, but the place was packed. Maybe that's a good thing, maybe it's a bad thing. Either way, there was little standing room, and it wouldn't surprise me if this bar exceeded its capacity per fire code (as a lot of bars ignore). The name seemed to imply more rare liquors, as the establishment didn't resemble a library. I didn't see anything that really stood out behind the bartenders, and the selection of IPAs was rather dismal. Thursdays at the Library are awesome! $1 domestics, $1 wells, $5 Long Islands, and for those that are out before 11PM, $2.5 you "call" its. There is a bar right when you walk in, toward the back of the room, and upstairs so it's easy and quick to grab a drink. There's great music and mesmerizing videos. Out of all the places on actual 6th, this is my first and foremost favorite. Prices are always very reasonable (I don't think I've ordered anything over $5), even on Saturday nights. Quite the variety of bottled beers (I'm very picky!) and firefly (sweet tea vodka, not the cheap crap) is kept on hand. Long Island Iced teas specials are great for racing ;) Music is good, you can mingle or find a booth/nook for your private group. The lady bartenders are the fastest and the nicest, to everyone - Jeannie (sp?) is the BEST. Have seen some real @$$holes there harass them, unfortunately. Don't be one of those guys. The guy bartenders I had don't listen and don't give me the right drinks first time, or are just plain rude. That's definitely not to say there isn't an exception to this rule, I just haven't found one yet. As a bonus, was there for New Year's Eve and the champagne was flowing. read more

I gotta say, Austin, you deliver cheap alcohol in every bar! California should really learn a thing or two from you guys, because anyone can afford to get a drink or ten in this city! And the Library isn't any different! Long Island Iced Teas for $4???? Ya, you can't usually get a bottled beer for that in California! AMAZING!!!! This was one of our favorite bars we went to downtown, yes, the $4 Long Islands helped us like this place not gonna lie ha ha, but it is all wooden interior and just seems a little classier, even if we were pretty sure a lot of people in there were undergrads, there were actually some other people here in our age group! Again AMAZING! ha ha And they have pool tables upstairs that are FREE!! Again, something California should learn about! My boyfriend and I were in shock that we could play for free!! And the upstairs is WAY less crowded too if that is what you want. The one complaint? Their air hockey table.....DOESN'T HAVE ANY AIR!! And it isn't free....So we paid a dollar and then just had to hit the puck as hard as we could to try and score, so it was really just like hand hockey, and not air hockey.... It gets crowded here pretty quickly, but they have decent music and music videos play along with them upstairs on their flat screens which is always a good conversation starter, and there were some free alcoholic brand key chains on the tables up for grabs too ha. But cheap good stiff drinks, free pool, good music, and did I say cheap drinks already? But $10 minimum on cards so come prepared to drink for drinks at those prices! ha ha And FYI they supposedly have a happy hour too which is just mind boggling to me! How can drinks get cheaper? After being stuffed with tons of food and a good 4 or 5 drinks down, we started walking down the 6th street to find our first bar. We walked by this empty Coyote Ugly. It really just didn't look anything like the one in NYC. It looked very depressing. We walked back to the only bar that looked alive at the time. After we got our beers, we figured out why everyone was in there. It was throw back thursday! Domestics were $1 and imports were $2 until 11pm. Sure, the music was decent, the TVs were nice, the girls were hot, but what mattered at the time was that the booze was cheap (yeah, both quality and the price). We felt like college students again:-D Of course, by the time we finished our last drink shortly after 11, we figure the bar is about to close, so we left. I was wondering why the bar was still packed as I walked out. To my surprise, the street was now just as packed as the bar and there is a line outside of every bar....even the ones that were empty before. Yes, this is my first trip to Austin. This place is horrible. If you like paying to look at books then come to this bar. Very shitty servings of liquor, beware and watch the bar tenders they will say they do a three count on a mix drink pour however it's more like a damn splash. I even brought it to the bar tenders attention and instead of pouring more he asked if I was working under cover for TBC and was trying to bust him for pouring me too much even though he poured like two table spoons for vodka in my drink . Hell no I don't work for TBC I just wanted my 6$ drink to have liquor and not just juice! Most expensive cup of juice I have ever paid for! Wish I could give negative stars or none! read more

Where else can you tell your parents you are at the library on a saturday night and REALLY be there?

Being an older female here in the Austin area, one that did not attend UT..... (no boos) I can appreciate the liveliness that is 6th street but sometimes I feel a bit out of place, as if I am that older woman who seems like the perv strolling the streets. Sometimes I feel unwelcomed by the college frat street, but the Library is one place I feel semi-comfortable. I have been here before, but its always been an in and out kinda thing for me... Of all the bars on 6th, this one is a little bit bigger than the rest and has pool tables and foosball upstairs if you ever make it up there... The bar however, on certain nights becomes impossible to get to because it is so packed with people sitting directly in front of it... I love the bar stools, dont get me wrong, but on busy nights, maybe they should move them away..... Rule of thumb... There is NO CAMPING in front of the bar. If you cant get a drink, the bartender doesnt make any money... Anywho, I really enjoy Tuesday nights... They play a variety of old and new music. The drink special starts at 11PM I believe and consists of dollar wells. My friends and I love to grab a table sit down, talk, dance and have a good old time. The scene here is mixed with young people and older alike so I dont feel as out of place..... maybe on a Sat/Fri night I wouldnt like it... but Tuesdays work for me. read more

Monday nights at the Library are a different animal. $1 draft beers, $1 wells! A moderate crowd for Memorial Day made for a long wait at the bar, but our group of eight was able to find a pair of tables where we could almost hear each other at the opposite ends of the table. Music selection was actually decent, if LOUD. On weekends, it's more of a packed, fratty, stare-down-if-you're-not-ultra-hot place, though it's definitely not the worst in town. I cringed when my group suggested going there on a Monday, but it was sooo much more tolerable! $10 credit card minimum on $1 drinks is kind of ridiculous, but oh well. read more

I finally realized I'd grown too old to go to 6th street when I stood on the 2nd floor balcony, looked down on the young masses below, and thought "I have nothing in common with anything going on here..." That said, if your scene is cheap drinks ($1 beers, $2 Long Island Iced Tea on Saturday) and college kids racing to the bottom of the bottle, then the Library is an excellent choice to stop in to on 6th street. Woo hoo! $3 long islands. You read it correctly. Lol, the bartenders are quick. You have a full bar. Don't be rude, wait your turn... No live DJ, but it's better that way! I don't need someone yelling in the mic at me, tryna hear what my friends have to say, kay?! They're bathrooms are good enough for 6th street, never disgusting... As clean as it could be for some drunken college kids. Usually started the night off here because of their Long Island Iced Tea specials on Fri and Sat nights ($2.50...but I hear they upped the prices to $3 now. Sad). But they're strong. And good. But I once made the mistake of order the LITs on a Thursday night (forgot it was a Friday...you know how college was), and they were $5 each...definitely not worth it. The Library is the epitome of themed bars on 6th Street. For some reason, I always feel so sophisticated here - even while chasing a Vegas Bomb with cheap beer. Pros: -TV's for sports -The books aren't real! No reading required! No late fees! -We don't have to whisper! -ATM in the bar (no looking over your shoulder for bums...usually) -Great contemporary wood construction -Lots of popular beers on draft: Bud light, Bud, LoneStar, Dos Eq, Fireman 4, Guinness, B Moon, M Lite, Leinies, Shiner, Coors Light -Located smack dab in the middle of Dirty 6th. -$3 Long Islands! -Friendly bartenders put up with our shenanigans! Cons: -No secret door in the wall of books....or is there?! -I don't recall seeing much live music here...may be a bit cramped for that? Overall, this is definitely a place I HAVE to stop in for at least a long island when I go out downtown. And I know its a great safe haven during mayhem weekends like SX and ACL. read more

Yeah, The Library can be fratty, but it's also one of a small handful of bars on the dirty 6th that even interest me anymore. It's usually my first stop, when it's less crowded and I can get a seat at the bar. Typically the male bartenders seems to be more attentive to my boyfriend and I, and the drinks are usually proportioned just right + they're so cheap. Yay for college towns! I enjoy the eclectic pick of music, the Firefly and water is yummy, and there are always odd music videos playing on the TVs. High-five bro! read more

I'll keep this brief so as not to confuse my personal drama at the bar with the actual view on the bar itself. (sigh) The bar has potential. I thought the decor was cool, having lined shelves with books in an attempt to capture the library theme. However, there was one major flaw - I had a hard time getting the bartender to recognize our end of the bar. Several other patrons were flagging him down with me and for some reason, he just kept servicing the group down from us. If nothing else, a bar should have an attentive bartender. And if the crowd is too large, the staff should grow with it. It doesn't matter how great the decor or ambiance is if you can't get a drink. read more

This place gets four stars for the following reasons: 1) I had my first public drunken make-out session in here (I'm not ashamed to admit it...okay, maybe a little). 2) I snuck into this bar when I was under twenty-one (this kind of goes hand in hand with #1). 3) They have $1.25 Long Island Ice Teas on Saturday nights until 11 (this also kind of contributes to the impetus behind #1 and #2). The Library now is kind of like that weird place I go back to and immediately feel like I did a few years ago. I can smell the alcohol and feel the excitement off of everyone around me. This place is packed together so tightly on busy nights, it's somewhat infectious in its good times. For the literally best drink specials anywhere in town , any night of the week- The Library is where its at. With dollar wells and dollar domestics for at least half the week, Library has discovered the downtown method for success. If you lower your prices they will come. Always crowded even on dead nights, this is the place I start my downtown bar hopping. The bartenders are really awesome! They are fast, can read your lips over the roar of the crowd and earn their tips well. The music is really good, familiar songs you can sing along too. While the vibe is pretty college, its great for people watching ( especially when a dance party spontaneously starts at the back of the bar.) There is a second floor where people can watch those below or buy drinks at a smaller bar. And really, who would pass up the chance to tell those at home- sorry, I cant come, I have to hang out at "The Library." read more

Seems like the bearded guy isn't working there any more. Haven't seen him in forever. The other bartenders were incredibly rude and didn't know how to mix any of the cocktails on their own menu. How sad. Even the ingredients were listed. Mind boggling. The dude stood by his soda concoction that barely had any alcohol. My friend was simply asking them to replace them since they were pretty much soda only. Refuses. Brought out the manager and more bartenders that only ignored my friend's request. Simply add a little more alcohol please. It was literally just sprite because it was only a splash of their watered down vodka. Ample seating/standing room areas upstairs. Done. -1 star for the obnoxiously loud music that's always blaring. The Library seems to have a propensity for playing David Guetta and Pitbull. Not cool. I give it 3 stars because if you're a college student with low funds, you can get drunk here fast... i think on friday nights, the long islands are like 2.50 or something and those own me, but then im' a really cheap drunk. the main problem i had with this place is that it can get SO crowded. to get to the bar you would have to squeeze through like 50 people and once you get your drink, you have to figure out a way to squeeze through again without spilling anything! it's definitely one of those places you'd want to "hop" to. but be prepared to hop out fast too cuz there's so many people there that you'd be likely to get your toe stepped on. read more
