I've had many good meals here in the past 13 years I've visited with my wife. Historical I'd give this place a solid 4 stars. Today was an awful experience. The service was terrible, the server was inattentive, horribly mispoured my can of beer (spilled it on the table, half a glass of head) and was completely uninterested in serving us. Calling the food we ordered "bad" would be a compliment. My huevos rancheros had no black beans or sauce the scrambled eggs were soaked in water, much like the tortillas. They were inedible. The server said it was because of the pico, which is crazy. Pico should not make a breakfast dish into a soup. I'll never come back again. Which sucks, I used to like this place a lot. read more

Seems to be a local bar. I stayed at the knickerbocker so I came here a couple of nights. Inconsistent service and okay food. I had the calamari that were a min to sheets of paper sliced and fried,the taste was okay but they were so thin so we're over cooked and the texture as strange. It's plated with a seaweed salad that was amazing. If I could order just that I would have. The ribs. The meat was cooked nicely, but then the looted a bucket of overly sugary bbq sauce all over them ruining the flavor. I corrected that by scraping off the bbq sauce with a knife. Night two I had a burger, it was very good and filling. The truffle fries are crispy and delicious while hot so eat them fast. Once cold the quake degrades faster thank McDonald's fries. The first night the service was great and friendly. The second night my waitress was mechanical, I'm personable, and just going through the motions. It didn't make for a good night. We came for brunch the morning after my brother's wedding before a bunch of us left. We all stayed at the hotel and this was just a perfectly convenient place to gather. There were plenty of tables for us to all gather around. I ordered the steak and eggs. It was pretty good, but the price was pretty steep for a brunch entrée. We came here around 10:00 pm on the Sunday night before Memorial Day and the fact they were open makes them high on my list to begin with! For a variety of reasons we were late getting around to dinner and this place was among the few still open, let alone serving dinner. And the food was all very good! Our waiter, Devon, was great and we all enjoyed our meals. I got the full rack of ribs and everyone was jealous. I'm not a rib/BBQ expert but for me these ribs were fall-off-the-bone delicious compared to the last rib dinner I ordered somewhere else and had to fight to get the meat off the bones. This is the house restaurant for the adjoining hotel and usually hotel restaurants aren't my favorite, but I really liked this one and would dine here again if we come back to MKE. read more

In person dinning in, the service is horrible with rude staff and then ordering off food delivery apps from this place is a nightmare. The handful of times we have tried to order from here using a food delivery app, our order seems to have been "picked up 15 minutes ago by a different driver." I can see this happening maybe once but for it to happen every time and the same excuse, seems a little fishy to me. I reviewed The Knick back in March - I had a great brunch with a friend. We came back to The Knick in the early evening of Saturday, 10/7. My friend had called in a reservation and they did not have it - but fortunately it was early and there were plenty of tables available. I ordered the blackberry ginger mocktail, which was OK but incredibly sweet. So many bars don't understand that fruit juice with a couple additions does not make a mocktail. I couldn't taste the ginger beer at all, and as I worked my way down the drink, it was more and more sickly sweet despite all my stirring. Later, I asked our server to have the bartender make me a mocktail in the style of an old fashioned. That was a total miss and one taste was all I took. It was essentially club soda and bitters. There should have been a splash of OJ and some maraschino cherry juice - something to replicate the drink. Perhaps the bartender doesn't know how to make an old fashioned. (I'm pretty sure that's a bartending felony in Wisconsin.) My friend and I both ordered the New York Strip, medium. It was a very pretty plate, as you can see. The steak was OK - not bad by any means, but not all that tender. The potatoes were fine but made soggy by the ultra-salty sauce, and the broccolini was a smidge undercooked. Serving such long stems on the broccolini is risky, because they're tougher than the florets - and harder to cook than broccoli. Don't get me wrong, I don't think you should throw away the stems - but you have to be able to cut them, preferably with your fork. I ate nearly everything, but the salty sauce ruined it for me. You couldn't taste anything but saltiness - and the food was swimming in it. The butter on the steak, which should have been the only other thing imparting some salt (other than whatever the steak was seasoned with), became superfluous as a result. Oh, and the steak itself was WELL salted, because I kept crunching on the salt. Have I mentioned I have kidney disease? I don't normally order salty foods - at least, not intentionally. We split some bread pudding for dessert. It was warmed too long in the microwave and I ended up burning my tongue on it since I didn't expect such heat. The flavor was fine - I mean, it's bread pudding. It tasted like homemade bread pudding - nothing stood out about it. Our server, Devon V, was the bright spot of the evening. He checked in with us several times during the course of our visit and was completely chill. The acoustics in the dining room - well, they suck. There isn't a pretty way to state it. It was the same way in March. When the room wasn't full, it was fine, but then it filled up and sounded like a frat party. We were practically shouting at each other to be heard, and even our server couldn't understand what we were saying at one particularly loud point. The ambience of The Knick is very pleasant and neutral. They do have Halloween decorations up, and most of them are pretty cute, although I'm not sure what fishing nets have to do with spiders, unless they were trying to imitate webs? We'll likely be back (my friend eats there more often than I do) to experience more food items. read more

Our food arrived fairly fast and hot. The Denver omelet was full of ingredients and had good flavor. It had a little too much cheese for my liking. The potatoes were tasty and hearty. It was nice having different options for bread on the side. The French toast was super thick and lacked deep flavor. The syrup was great! I normally go here for happy hour or do take our orders the food is excellent and the atmosphere is very decorative and intimate and cozy. Bar staff very attentive and pleasant when recently calling in a to go order asked about a particular host who answers the phone from time to time and was informed she's no longer there really loved her personality very gorgeous young lady always have lovely fragrance on and dressed to the nines and awesome playlist on speakers when she was there also made sure if there was no seating at the bar when something was available, she will alert you or give you a call if leaving your Info at host stand on those busy Friday nights was really good seeing some type of diversity in this place finally. I came to The Knick for MKE downtown dining week! It was a great experience with some friends. Ive wanted to tru The Knick for a while now so what a better popular than dining week! We made a reservation for the day of and was able to get a table! The service was slower that day, one girl was working her tail off! Loves the atmosphere, busy place. The 3 courses took a while to come out in-between, about 2 hours for the total experience. The Salmon sandwich was phenomenal, cooked perfect and wonderful seasoning, the cheesecake was a nice touch to finish. My one and only complaint would be not to serve a cold salad on a hot plate that just came out if the dishwasher?? My salad got warm quick due to the plate temp. First of all let me state we dine frequently at The Knick and have NEVER felt the need to complain about the food or service. Today I would if I could give ZERO stars Therefore our experience today was rather shocking . First of all the server - a youngish slender man with longish hair & distinctive tongue piercing - approached the table to take our order and once we began informed us oops he didn't have any 'paper to write on' and went to get it .... Then as our order was ( politely) given he proceeded to challenge each of our requests ... we seriously just sat there stunned by both his words & attitude .... It was at this point we decided to simply get up & leave rather than deal any further with a server who was obviously so ill equipped to be employed in the service industry ! We recently had a fantastic Sunday breakfast/brunch at The Knick. I appreciated that they take reservations through OpenTable- I wish more places did. We asked to be seated away from the door on a cold and blustery day and we were seated in a wonderfully cozy spot. I'd suggest ALWAYS asking to be seated away from the door when visiting The Knick in the winter; You'll thank me. The service was spot on & very friendly. The coffee set the tone for the meal and puts certain national brands that I won't mention to shame. Delish and a great start for the day. In my experience, The Knick is the kind of place you can take your aunt to or have a business meeting in; it's well located and offers a menu at reasonable prices. It also seems to be the hotspot for the senior crowd (and the friend I went with is a senior herself) on a Friday night. We came during brunch hours on Labor Day. Usually they have their brunch menu available on Labor Day yearly but had a limited brunch menu this year which was a tad disappointing. The salmon was very good and flavorful. The asparagus was tender and it was my first time having couscous that was very good also. Downtown dining week my day 5. First of all, I must point out that it feels very different from being outside and inside of the restaurant. When I approached the front door, the restaurant looked bright and very nice - like a restaurant at a popular vacation location. But after I got in, it became very dark compared with the street seating area and the floor was somehow slippery. And after I got seated, I sat there for 15 mins before someone brought me water (she is even not my server but I appreciated someone still remembered me). Understood the restaurant was busy, but this is the first busy restaurant that left me alone for more than 10 mins. After my server took my order, I sat alone for another 20 mins with no food and no one checking with me. Don't even want to talk about the food (okay I respect whoever spends time reading this review so quickly here is my honest food review: the calamari came in generous portion but was very dry, like a plate of rubbery popcorns; the salmon salad tasted really great, but I just didn't have too much time to enjoy it. Btw, if you care about croutons in the salad then you should be prepared to order some other food. I found only 3 pieces of croutons in my salad. That worked for me though as I don't like croutons. Cheesecake - made it to go. It was cold and tasted great. You just can't go wrong with the cheese cake). I just wanted to finish quickly as I still needed to go back to work. I regret picking this restaurant during dining week. I don't judge a restaurant by service alone, but if I come in on time with reservation and get seated, I wish I could be at least treated with respect. Sunday brunch on a mild summer morning the family and I were privy to a treat. We arrived early hoping that we could beat the Sunday brunch rush. We were right on time. We chose to be seated outside on the patio. Its heated so it was very pleasant. We had never been here before so we were surprised to see the amount and size of the dishes. They were huge. We ordered french toast, pancakes and eggs. The amount of food that you get for 10 bucks (price of a order of pancakes/french toast) was well worth it. We honestly could have shared plates and would have still been full. The food arrived at a reasonable time and the waitress was very accomodating. I will go back to a brunch or two in the future, maybe i'll see what the regular menu is like. With the location being so close to the lake and the lower east side parking can be a bit of a hassle. I am usually ambivalent about hotel restaurants; re: I tend to overlook these places or think of them more as a "last resort" sort of place. After seeing the (fantastic) Beyond Van Gogh show in downtown Milwaukee, we were struggling to find a local place for dinner on short notice. Most places were fully booked or do not take reservations. Being downtown, we wanted to grab dinner in the city. Thanks to a quick Google search we found the Knick. We gave them a call, found out they had seating available and headed on over. I was surprised to see it was a "hotel restaurant" but, the location was nice, and seats available both inside and outside. We were seated right by the entrance which I am not a fan of. The team was very quick to move us to another table, upon request. Overall, I am glad we decided to give this place a shot. The service was a bit hit or miss - younger waitstaff so perhaps inexperienced and could have checked on us more frequently but...very friendly and no major complaints on the service-front. They had a fun, specialty drink menu. Highly recommend the "Knuck if you Buck" drink made with Van Gogh Pomegranate Vodka! I appreciated the more uncommon menu options such as the tofu salad which I ended up ordering and the ramen/noodle bowl with pork that my BF selected. We also ordered tots as an appetizer - delicious! Not your typical tots. These were legt gourmet served with my favorite: aioli. Bonus of the restaurant being in a hotel: super clean bathrooms! Good bye forever, Knick! Over the years, we've probably dining at the Knick 50+ times. Each time has been great! Until today today was horrible and we will never go back and we will tell our friends. We will refuse service because we had our service dog with us, and they requested papers which no one carries. I'm pretty sure it's against the law to ask for them. This is the same service dog that just flew on a plane with us. The manager was rude, and she would not budge because we did not have papers. We were going to eat outside on their patio. Slowest service ever. Had to flag down another waitress to get more condiments and to get our check because ours wouldn't come to the table. We got stuck out on the patio because it was a busy Sunday morning and while it was heated, there were too many tables in too small of a space. My boyfriend liked his salmon Benedict, but my pancakes were a little weird, they didn't taste like usual pancakes, missing that buttermilk taste, leaving them a little dry in your mouth.
