Three years ago I came to this restaurant. The nigiri lunch combo was great. This time after stargazing with friends at the Spanish Bank Beach, we came here for dinner as it was nearby. There wasn't any change to the restaurant. It has been maintaining its tidiness. There were many customers during the dinner time on Friday night. The moment we stepped in the restaurant, there was a chocking burnt smell. I couldn't stop from coughing. I would expect the server could open the door for better ventilation a bit earlier. Perhaps there wasn't many servers it took sometime to get the servers to take order. I would appreciate if they could be more attentive. This is why I take away one star. Regarding the foods: Mango roll: a good harmony of mango and the rest of the ingredients. We all loved it. Salmon liver: combo of fresh salmon nigiri and rolls. Met my expectation. Sake Don: Salmon again. Nicely sliced salmon on the rice with a piece of tamago roll. Recommended. Tempura udon: rich taste of soup well balanced with the udon and tempura. Tempura were fried proper timing and without the smell of "recycled-oil". All for you rolls: we needed a bit more so we ordered this extra dish. Dynamite roll was great and the spicy tuna roll was up to standard. The price was reasonable. The ambient was great. Easy to find roadside parking. A comfy spot near 10th and Alma. It offers a variety of Japanese dishes and sushi. I came for lunch and was pleasantly surprised. Ordered the chicken katsu bites for an appetizer. It came with a salad with miso dressing that was a good complement to the bites. They are crispy on the outside and tender inside. The flavour was divine. Well worth ordering. For my main meal, I ordered the grilled saba (mackerel). It was nice and crispy and meaty and tender in the right places. The fish comes in a light teriyaki sauce that is very nice with this oily fish. The homemade tsukemono was crunchy and had the perfect sourness. Another serving of the salad and miso made for a good balance. My one quibble is that they served sushi rice with the meal. I would have preferred plan rice to temper the rich flavours, but that is a personal preference. Many people I know would prefer to have a bit more flavour with their rice. The service is good. This is amazing modern fusion sushi. It is somewhat pricey but the quality and taste make it worth it. You have to make a reservation as it is very popular. They gave our group a time block of 1.5 hours to order and eat. The servers were nice and attentive and made some good suggestions. The restaurant has a very intimate ambiance with its low lighting and decor. If you want very good sushi and expect to pay up for it, this is the place. It is certainly the place to bring someone to impress them however you may leave a bit hungry despite what you spent. Totally worth the price - nigiri and sashimi are fresh and are of better quality than other sushi spots in the neighborhood. Wild salmon and tuna taste proper. I was riding by on my motorcycle and looking for a place to eat and happened to settle on this lovely restaurant. The ambiance is modern as the building is newer than its neighbours. Kitchen Dada offers the whole package: good service, reasonable prices, nice presentation and delicious food. A dinner night out with four friends last night and all enjoyed so that says something. Sapporo was perfectly cold and the warm premium sake was wonderful. Done right straight from the start and each visit from our server got better. I had the beet salad which is my most favourite. The deep fried shredded beets had an amazing crunch and not greasy. The duck breast tataki was seared perfectly and finished on top with onions and a light drizzle of sauce. Albacore Tuna Oshi was nicely prepared and tasted so good. For $13/7 pieces it's so reasonable. Triple Salmon Roll had a nice and refreshing twist with a thin daikon on the outside rolled with salmon, ikura, avocado and cucumber inside and finished with smoked salmon on top. We finished the evening with the tempura ice cream-ice cream ball rolled in tempura batter and deep fried. Crispy on the outside while the ice cream stayed firmed. It was good. My partner and I tried The Kitchen Dada take out this weekend as we wanted to test out a different spot from our usual and we enjoyed our meal! The fish was fresh and the rolls were a good size (hate it when they're too girthy). I had a salmon avo roll with salmon oshi and a miso as well as tempura. The oshi was great, nice and flavourful and I loved my miso! My only problems with the food itself was there could have been more structure to the rice. It was almost too sticky and the rolls ended up falling apart. The tempura was still crunchy which was great, just wish the prawns were bigger but the value is there for sure! I'm so glad that I decided to check this place out. I've been craving sushi and decided to order some today for my lunch. I got the salmon avocado roll, california roll and salmon oshi. What I loved about this place is that the sushi rice here is really good - not too dry, not squishy. The fish here is super fresh! The salmon and avocado had amazing quality salmon and tasted amazing, the salmon oshi had a good ratio of fish and rice and the flavour was amazing. It is hard to find a decent place to get together with friends over lunch or dinner on the west side, The Kitchen Dada is my top choice now. It is easy to get to by public transportation and there is free underground parking (I saw the sign on the door, I do not know how many parking spots there are). We went on a Saturday, didn't see any $10 lunch specials. The prices were about average, the sets that we ordered were about $19-$20 each. The servers were all very friendly. We were greeted as soon as we entered the front door and tea was refilled regularly. My friend and I ordered from the lunch sets and our food arrived quite fast. I had the unagi set, the food was tasty and portion was generous. The tempura was well done, crisp and tender. I also love the variety in the set, I got unagi on rice, udon, tempura, and salad. My friend ordered another lunch set, I forgot exactly what it was called. It was seaweed and rice in a stone pot, she loved the crispiness of the rice at the bottom of the pot. It was a quiet place where we could sit comfortably and chat. There was no pressure from the servers even though we chatted for a good hour after we finished our lunch. Grabbed some takeout tonight and the food is delicious and very well prepared! The amount of rice that was on each roll is perfect and they were generous with the filling and special roll toppings. The sashimi was extremely fresh and they serve only sockeye salmon as well. We ordered quite a few hot items including their chicken karaage which comes 3 ways (soy, spicy and with mayo), the chicken katsu bites, the nabeyaki udon (a LOT of chicken in this dish!) and finally the special of the day which was chicken teriyaki donburi with pork gyoza and a small salad. Looking at what I'm writing now, there was a lot of chicken on our plates tonight but it went well with the sushi rolls we got as well! We got the mango roll (and loved the sweetness) as well as the rainbow roll (which was topped with beautiful slices of hamachi, salmon and tuna among others. Both rolls were well adored by the family and not oxersauced either! We also got the negitoro and saba shiso which were both well constructed and simple but also well priced! Their chopped scallop was standard but the salmon oshi was great! Not too oily or holding too much rice on the bottom, I actually enjoyed this even though I usually stay away from oshi. It had the perfect smoky flavour to this and I highly recommend it. Finally we added the spicy tuna oshi which was spicy tuna on top of crispy rice which was okay... Overall, we loved the food here and if it wasnt so far away, would consider returning more often! read more

Rarely do we hit up all the way to Alma but when we do we made sure try out some of the popular food scenes and deals there! This was one of the spots we heard lots about lately and the special combo of the day was only $10!!! We ordered from The Kitchen Dada on Halloween, and it was all treats - no tricks! We even got complimentary chocolates, which was such a thoughtful gesture and greatly appreciated.  Our order consisted of the Tataki Roll ($15) and four kinds of Oshi Zushi: Salmon ($13), Albacore Tuna ($13), Hotate ($15), and Hamachi ($16). Every bite was unique and incredibly delicious!  Of note was how plump and crisp the prawn tempura was in the Tataki Roll, as well as how rich and luxurious the mouthfeel was in each Oshi Zushi. The seared fish is silky and literally melts in your mouth, combining with the intoxicating sauces and bite from different textures such as jalapeno slices (Salmon), crispy bacon bits (Hotate), and fried onion (Hotate). It's hard to narrow down my favourite, but one of the most memorable flavours was definitely the truffle mayo in the Albacore Tuna. It was flavourful without overwhelming the delicateness of the tuna.  We were fortunate enough to get a discount from UberEats, which was why we ordered more than we would've at original price. However, I still could've eaten more. Honestly, if your looking for a great place to grab Japanese food (Homemade style), I would suggest this place. When I say Homemade style, I'm not suggesting low quality either. This places really takes it's time to perfect all their dishes. Can you find things listed on their menu that you cannot find elsewhere? Perhaps, but will you get the same quality and taste that you get from hard working, loving, passionate chefs here? I highly doubt it. I ordered the Duck Breast Tataki and the Unagi lunch combo. Boy was I ever blown away by the taste of the Duck Breast Tataki. The perfect amount of salty and spicy, with a bit of sweet. Normally, I'm not a big fan of anything spicy anymore, but wow the spiciness in this appetizer was perfect, it was to the point where you knew it was there but you get no lingering effect from it. The garnish they used also complimented the dish perfectly. Wow!! The Unagi combo was a little bit of everything; udon, homemade pickles, unagi on rice with homemade unagi sauce, shrimp tempura, and a salad. Typically unagi don is one of my most ordered dish in Japanese restaurants, it was no disappointment here, the rice was cooked well and the unagi sauce complimented the unagi perfectly. Will I be back?? Definitely, I'm planning on becoming a regular here. Not only is the menu constantly evolving due to the whole Covid19 pandemic, but there's free parking downstairs to the side of the building and on the street nearby as well. We weren't planning to go here, but wow, what a discovery! Tucked away on the west side, this is THE place for good sushi. Everything we ordered felt like they took it to another level. Even the California rolls! The roll set lunch was a good sampler to set the stage for the rest of the meal. I never thought I would enjoy a California roll, but here I am letting you know that it was good. The dynamite roll was well battered, not too crispy, but still has a good crunch. The spicy tuna lived up to its name. At first bite, I thought I would be okay. Nope, one is the most I can do. The spicy sauce hits you when you least expect it. My partner enjoyed it (higher tolerance to spiciness). Negitoro roll was delectable. It felt for creamier than others we've tried in other sushi restaurants. The star of meal... the albacore tuna oshi sushi! A bite of pure bliss. Imagine creamy goodness coating the insides of your mouth, but it's not too heavy. You feel like you need to eat more of it, but also feel like you need to savour it as much as you can. A definite must get for our next trip here. I loved the decor, the food, and the service here. On top of that, there were diners who were requesting servers to cancel their order because they were taking wayyyy to freaking long given that there were 3 servers + 4 cooks. Living in the neighbourhood, but never having tried the place, we saw the $55 omakase DineOut menu and decided to give it a go. We were very impressed. The beet sashimi salad really had the wow factor; the beets were shredded into impossibly thin strands (thinner than spaghettini) and must have been deep fried (they were so crunchy but without a hint of grease), piled on top like a kind of straw. The dressing was terrific and everything about the dish was bang-on. We ordered a bowl of steamed rice to go with the great seared yellow tail and duck dishes; it was slightly sweet (I think from a dash of mirin as there was a hint of vinegar) and quite delicious, even in its own right. We liked every dish very much, but those were our favourites. Servers were very polite and reasonably attentive, and the kitchen was reasonably quick given that the place was packed (presumably due to DineOut). The only thing that wasn't up to par was the wine list, which was extremely limited, and they only had one house white and red by the glass (some very cheap French wine - we decided to drink beer instead). However, they have a more extensive beer and sake list. In any case, we'lll definitely go back, just for the food! read more

The sushi was average (but perhaps I've been blessed by good sushi). Delivery took an hour longer than expected (this was on the preparation side not the driver). Portions for the sushi were decent but on the small side for the appetisers. In order from favourite to least favourite: tamagoyaki / volcano roll / nasu dengaku / unagi oshi / salmon oshi The oshi had good flavour but the salmon was very overcooked and the unagi had lots of bones in it and was not buttery/fatty. Thus I believe that fish quality and preparation could be better. The nasu dengaku was quite sweet and the batter was thick. The eggplant was quite juicy, and overall it was decent but I wouldn't get it again. The volcano roll had lots of crab meat and I liked the sauces it came with (unagi sauce, spicy mayo and some gochujang inspired sauce) but the salmon quality could be better. The avocado was nice and ripe though. The tamagoyaki had a nice sweetness, was thick, and I liked the crispy onion/garlic? on top which added a nice crunch. The portion, like with the nasu dengaku, was quite small though, which is a shame. If you do go I recommend the tamagoyaki and volcano roll. read more

Food here is great and they have a lot of things on the menu that are unusual to the average sushi restaurant. However, this is not a dine-in establishment. As a matter of fact, they had signs up all over when you first walk in about DoorDash and Uber Eats drivers and where they should wait. I should have realized from that. The ambience is extremely lacking. There is no sushi bar. The cooks working in the open kitchen have no interaction with the guests. There are stacks of clean dirty dishes and tubs of supplies all over the place. If you were looking for a place to relax or have a date night, this is not the place for you. Discovered this new Japanese restaurant on my way to Grounds for Coffee cinnamon buns on Alma Street. It's in the old Baru Latino space. Talk about picking a bad time to open a new place (pandemic). Decided to try it out to support a local business. We were pleasantly surprised with the taste and quality of the sushi. Definitely would order the salmon oshi and mango roll again. They were both comparable to what you can find at Minami (not Miku). I would skip the Dynamite Roll. It lacked flavour. Same with the chicken karaage. It tasted much better after I added my own lemon and used the Japanese mayo. It's more like 3.5 stars but bonus for trying to stay afloat during this time. read more

The quality of sockeye salmon & hamachi sashimi was not fresh at all. I didn't feel well after eating it. We been taking out & spending $250 after eating our lunch. My husband specifically told Korean waitor that salmon oshi was not done properly. It was our last chance of eating in this restaurant if that was not corrected immediately. However, they done the same thing again. Please note they will charge you a small Siracha sauce for $1.50 too. We have been to many Japanese restaurants and it was our first time seeing how ridiculous bad quality of the fish & charge of sauce after spending enormous amounts of money! read more
