    Chicken Katsu Bites
    Stephen M.

A comfy spot near 10th and Alma. It offers a variety of Japanese dishes and sushi. I came for lunch and was pleasantly surprised. Ordered the chicken katsu bites for an appetizer. It came with a salad with miso dressing that was a good complement to the bites. They are crispy on the outside and tender inside. The flavour was divine. Well worth ordering. For my main meal, I ordered the grilled saba (mackerel). It was nice and crispy and meaty and tender in the right places. The fish comes in a light teriyaki sauce that is very nice with this oily fish. The homemade tsukemono was crunchy and had the perfect sourness. Another serving of the salad and miso made for a good balance. My one quibble is that they served sushi rice with the meal. I would have preferred plan rice to temper the rich flavours, but that is a personal preference. Many people I know would prefer to have a bit more flavour with their rice. The service is good. The staff do not hover over you but are responsive. Well worth coming here for lunch. I'll have to try their dinner menu and sushi the next time.

This is amazing modern fusion sushi. It is somewhat pricey but the quality and taste make it worth it. You have to make a reservation as it is very popular. They gave our group a time block of 1.5 hours to order and eat. The servers were nice and attentive and made some good suggestions. The restaurant has a very intimate ambiance with its low lighting and decor. If you want very good sushi and expect to pay up for it, this is the place. It is certainly the place to bring someone to impress them however you may leave a bit hungry despite what you spent. However this place is more about quality than quantity and the sushi here is very yummy.

Wow. Yelp did not steer us wrong. We popped in on a quiet Thursday night while visiting in town. The beet salad!!! OMG it was delicious but share it with the whole table and order a large. Everything was wonderful! Great service and tasty rolls.

I was riding by on my motorcycle and looking for a place to eat and happened to settle on this lovely restaurant. The ambiance is modern as the building is newer than its neighbours. The food is amazing here. The fish is so fresh and clean. Everything is seasoned properly and never bland. The tempura is even salted giving extra umami flavour.

This spot has a $10 lunch special. Quiet spot with delicious food. The aburis melt in your mouth especially the eel a. Sashimi was divine - fresh and decorated with such perfection. I'm not a tuna fan but this was delicious! The only tuna sashimi I will rave about.

Kitchen Dada offers the whole package: good service, reasonable prices, nice presentation and delicious food. A dinner night out with four friends last night and all enjoyed so that says something. Sapporo was perfectly cold and the warm premium sake was wonderful. Done right straight from the start and each visit from our server got better. I had the beet salad which is my most favourite. The deep fried shredded beets had an amazing crunch and not greasy. The duck breast tataki was seared perfectly and finished on top with onions and a light drizzle of sauce. Albacore Tuna Oshi was nicely prepared and tasted so good. For $13/7 pieces it's so reasonable. Triple Salmon Roll had a nice and refreshing twist with a thin daikon on the outside rolled with salmon, ikura, avocado and cucumber inside and finished with smoked salmon on top. We finished the evening with the tempura ice cream-ice cream ball rolled in tempura batter and deep fried. Crispy on the outside while the ice cream stayed firmed. It was good. Kitchen Dada is worth driving across town for and looking forward to my next visit

My partner and I tried The Kitchen Dada take out this weekend as we wanted to test out a different spot from our usual and we enjoyed our meal! The fish was fresh and the rolls were a good size (hate it when they're too girthy). I had a salmon avo roll with salmon oshi and a miso as well as tempura. The oshi was great, nice and flavourful and I loved my miso! My only problems with the food itself was there could have been more structure to the rice. It was almost too sticky and the rolls ended up falling apart. The tempura was still crunchy which was great, just wish the prawns were bigger but the value is there for sure! Would order again.

It is hard to find a decent place to get together with friends over lunch or dinner on the west side, The Kitchen Dada is my top choice now. It is easy to get to by public transportation and there is free underground parking (I saw the sign on the door, I do not know how many parking spots there are). We went on a Saturday, didn't see any $10 lunch specials. The prices were about average, the sets that we ordered were about $19-$20 each. The servers were all very friendly. We were greeted as soon as we entered the front door and tea was refilled regularly. My friend and I ordered from the lunch sets and our food arrived quite fast. I had the unagi set, the food was tasty and portion was generous. The tempura was well done, crisp and tender. I also love the variety in the set, I got unagi on rice, udon, tempura, and salad. My friend ordered another lunch set, I forgot exactly what it was called. It was seaweed and rice in a stone pot, she loved the crispiness of the rice at the bottom of the pot. It was a quiet place where we could sit comfortably and chat. There was no pressure from the servers even though we chatted for a good hour after we finished our lunch. I highly recommend this place for get together with friends.

One of the best sushi I've had in Vancouver. The presentation was beautiful and so creative! Everyone in our party was super happy with their food, it was delicious. The green tea was also amazing. Definitely recommend coming here !

I'm so glad that I decided to check this place out. I've been craving sushi and decided to order some today for my lunch. I got the salmon avocado roll, california roll and salmon oshi. What I loved about this place is that the sushi rice here is really good - not too dry, not squishy. The fish here is super fresh! The salmon and avocado had amazing quality salmon and tasted amazing, the salmon oshi had a good ratio of fish and rice and the flavour was amazing. The california roll had a generous amount of crab filling and tasted really great. I will definitely return and hope to dine in when I get the chance!

I stopped by The Kitchen Dada for both lunch and dinner. My recommendation is to get the lunch special - it's a great option after Jericho beach. If you're always craving multiple dishes like me, the lunch special is definitely for you. It's only $19 with a wide selection of pieces. There's also free underground parking!

Walked by and saw their $10 takeout lunch. Glad o gave it a try. Well worth the $$$. Fresh salad with dressing. Small sized Unagi don, it was good amount for me.

Rarely do we hit up all the way to Alma but when we do we made sure try out some of the popular food scenes and deals there! This was one of the spots we heard lots about lately and the special combo of the day was only $10!!! The special combo of the day on my visit came with a temaki, karrage chicken donburi, gyoza and miso soup and they change it up every day. A good combination of eats that is a filler! It was a pretty decent deal especially for students in the area that are on a budget!

I appreciated this and would much prefer this over expecting to have a table than being disappointed. We got lucky though and were able to get seated right around 9. Service was very prompt and we were able to order, eat, and get out of the restaurant pretty quickly. Overall great experience even though I didn't absolutely love everything we ordered House roll: 3/5 this was ok. I counted maybe 36 seats. The interior is nice but generic enough to be just about any type of restaurant. The menu accessed via QR code. I ended up trying the following: - Assorted Tempura: Good. Light batter, but slightly overbrowned. - Miso Black Cod: Good. More elaborate presentation than most, but very small piece. - Salmon Belly Sashimi: Very good. Fresh and delicious. - Tom Special Roll Tray: Very good. A great way to sample all the different roll, all which are very good. I thought it was reasonably priced and could adequately feed 4 people. Service was very good. There are a LOT of staff, so we were constantly being checked on to make sure we were happy and got anything we needed. Overall a good meal. It doesn't classify as the best sushi in Vancouver, but I can see the quality-value ratio might be the best in the city. All the food was quite good and certainly not overpriced. I imagine the high staff count was due to the overwhelming amount of takeout orders. I would return.

My hubs and I vacationed in Vancouver a few weeks ago in late April. We had seen the long lines for dinner at Saku when we were here more than a year ago. So, we decided to give them a try for a late lunch around 2pm on a Wednesday afternoon. No wait. We got seated right away. We liked how spacious and airy the dining room was. Our wait staff were friendly and on point. They were considerate about answering our questions about the food and food allergies. I ordered the chicken thigh katsu ($26 Can) and my hubs got the chicken thigh curry ($28.50 Can). No dairy involved in either dish which I was happy about because I have challenges digesting milk protein. Yes, it's kinda pricey. Yes, it's totally worth it. The katsu is light, crispy, fried perfectly, not greasy, and comes with unlimited rice, miso soup, finely chopped cabbage salad, and an addictively delicious sesame dressing. My hubs' curry sauce was served on the side so he could pour out as much or as little as he wanted. All in all, it was a very pleasant and satisfying meal. Saku is top notch for katsu. You won't believe how good katsu can be until you try it.

Okeya Kyujiro is a Michelin one-star theatrical omakase restaurant, and when they say theatrical, they mean it! From the moment you're welcomed by smiling ushers in kimono to the closing tea ceremony, every movement feels intentional, precise, and elevated. The ambiance is serene and anticipatory. At the start, guests sit in silence as a black screen conceals the chefs. You see their shadows moving behind it. A bell rings, the screen lifts, and the performance begins. Dinner is a 25+ course experience priced at $325 per person. It's undeniably a splurge, but for a milestone celebration, it feels justified. The menu is seafood-forward, with many ingredients flown in from Japan. Each ingredient is presented before preparation, then carefully assembled and served directly from chef to guest. Courses arrive one by one, never rushed. The service team moves seamlessly in the background, refilling water and attending to drinks (available as an add-on) without disrupting the flow. The finale is a matcha ceremony, whisked in front of you with the same quiet precision that defines the evening. When the final sip is taken, the bell chimes once more, the chefs and staff bow, and the screens close. It was a beautifully choreographed dining experience, perfect for marking a special moment, and one I'd gladly return to for the next celebration.

This is a more theatrical style so expect louder music and a more theatrical experience (eg one of the servers played the flute for the guests celebrating birthdays). I prefer a more intimidate and interactive style of omakase where you can talk with the chefs. This lunch also felt a little fast in terms of progression of the meal. Some of the dishes were very tasty while others didn't wow us. With drinks, we were quite full despite some reviews saying portion is on the smaller size. Our total was around $500 with drinks for 2 people. A really good experience for omakase, especially if you are looking for a unique experience though not my favourite one I've tried.
