I looooove this place! Really, I almost want to say it again, that's how much I love this place. The first time I wandered in I was completely ignorant wondering, Do I order here? Should I find my own table? Is there a waitress? Why are all the people staring at me??? I walked through the dining room ( i swear the locals were chuckling under there breath) and wandered back out into the entryway/counter area where a very friendly woman gave me a quick run down on how to get things done - you order at the counter and they bring your food over to the table of your choice - then she rang a slightly obnoxious bell and shouted "Newbies in the house" after which everyone gave a surprisingly enthusiatic cheer.... slightly embarrassing, yet very amusing. Now the person who set this place up should win a prize for marketing because where you sit to eat everything, literally everything, is for sale! That pretty vase in the corner? Yup! That adorable stuffed monkey? Yup! Board games, candy, jewelry....the list goes on. Some (most) of the items are over priced, but even still I managed to leave with a couple of trinkets and had a good time "window shopping" while I waited for my food and while I ate (my grandmother would be so proud!). The tables are small and closely packed (dancing on the line of of cozy and cramped) and I would be a little nervous to see the inside of this place on a busy Sunday morning. When the weather is warm there is also outdoor seating. The food here is so ridiculously good! Fluffy pancakes, Portuguese sweet rolls, homemade pie, soups and desserts. It's all homemade, it's all fresh and it's all awesome! My only complaint is that I don't live closer...which is probably good because I would most likely eat all their pie (so good!) every day leaving none for anybody else. read more

Just, wow. Came here over the weekend with my boyfriend who had talked non-stop for a week about their Turkey Feast sandwich and their soups. While he ordered what he had been craving I opted for a Rueben. I don't know WHY I ordered a Rueben. I've never been a huge fan of them, but it just sounded good. I needed something saltly like corned beef and a Rueben was going to rectify that situation. Holy hell was that the best damn Rueben I have ever had. I don't know what they did to make the sandwich so magical, but it was perfection in every bite. I did sample my man's turkey feast too and for a brief moment had food envy, but that went away when I took another bite of my yummy noms. Even the coffee was perfect. Moral of the story - I REALLY don't think you can order something bad here. I'm under the impression that every morsel of food is just outright delicious here. Can't WAIT to go back. read more

Sorry but I can only give two stars even though the food that was served was tasty. My daughter and I took the short ride to The Windham Junction for breakfast based on reviews. So expectations were set high. It is a cozy little place, part convenient store. Order at the counter, grab one of the few available tables, and they bring your order out to you. Both of us being lovers of Eggs Benedict, we went with the special of Corned Beef Hash Eggs Benedict, what I know as Irish Eggs Benedict. About 10 minutes later we are served on paper plates with plastic utensils. That's fine for such a small casual spot. The first issue was there was no side toast served. I assumed toast came with the meal, but there was none. I saw others around me served great looking toast. But not us. I was hoping for a server to swing by so I could just ask, but never got a chance. Issue number two was one of the poached eggs was over cooked with a hard yoke. Finally, issue #3 was the lack of English muffins as the base for the corned beef hash, eggs, and hollandaise sauce. These are an integral part to any version of Eggs Benedict. But there were none. All we had was a pile of hash with eggs and sauce. No toast or English to sop up the yoke from the one perfect egg. What a shame because the hash tasted awesome, maybe the best I've ever had. It tasted home made fresh. The hollandaise was done right, and the home fries were tasty as well. I'm not sure I'll return. read more

I don't generally give five stars unless a place is a truly memorable dining experience - which generally means a "destination" restaurant, a place you'd go out of your way to visit. No one is ever going to think The Kitchen is a "fine dining" establishment; there are no linen tablecloths, no fine china, and no wine list. And you're not going to be leaving here with your wallet a couple of hundred dollars lighter, either. But you SHOULD go out of your way to pay a visit. This is basically diner fare, if you simply go by the menu on the chalkboard. Eggs and pancakes for breakfast, sandwiches and burgers and fries for lunch, and no dinner service - unless you look at the "specials" menu for Thursday and Friday evenings, and get your first clue that there's something different here. Like this past week, when Thursday's dinner special was a flame broiled tequila lime chicken breast, followed on Friday with veal Marsala and a perfect risotto. Here's the thing: the "diner cook" here is Jon, a Johnson & Wales trained chef, who (with his wife Kay, usually found behind the counter at the register) owns the place and consistently (and I mean ALWAYS) produces food way above what you'd expect to get at this sort of establishment. I could go on and on about the food - we've been regulars since moving to the area a few months ago - but there's no point; just get yourself over there as soon as you can and see for yourself. read more

Come for quality but don't expect quantity. This place uses fresh bread on everything and it takes everything to another level. Their breakfast sandwich on a biscuit was buttery and delicious with perfectly cooked eggs and sausage. For lunch I've had their meat loaf which I recommend as well as their interpretation of a "thanksgiving sandwich". Both were excellent and perfectly constructed albeit small. Overall it's a nice place to sit down for breakfast or drop by for lunch. You really can't go wrong with anything they serve here and the staff is very friendly and inviting. A great place with great food and a great atmosphere! Homemade soups (and "sipping" soup specials), hearty sandwiches or salads or breakfast, all made with top quality ingredients served by congenial, welcoming owners and waitstaff. Situated on the rail trail in an antique house/barn with country kitchen tables and benches. Trinkets, gifts, jewelry, candles, etc. adorn the walls and tables (all for sale btw). Take the time to cross country ski, run, bike, or walk your dog and then stop in for breakfast, lunch or an ice cream or hot/cold drink. This is what a country kitchen should be like. Lots of charm and great food. The place is very welcoming with its eclectic seating, knick-knacks, and country-store feel. Everyone working there was very pleasant and helpful. We had a party of 7, which was a bit hard to accommodate in a small and busy place, but everyone was very helpful in making sure we'd be comfortable. The food was excellent and priced very reasonably. I ordered the "Hungry Joe"--2 eggs cooked to order (and done so perfectly!), home fries (yum!), and choice of meat--for $6.50. The order came with so much toast that I couldn't even make a dent in it! The coffee was also flavorful without being acidic. I would definitely recommend stopping here for breakfast--though I hear the Kitchen's lunch is pretty spectacular, too! read more

We discovered the Kitchen on accident one rainy day last fall when we were looking for lunch. I had a meatloaf sandwich and my husband had a pastrami. Both were really good. We were impressed with the service and the cozy, home-like environment. We went back for breakfast a couple of weeks ago. I had an egg white omelette with several vegetable fillings, ham, and cheddar. Being a Vermonter, I was happy to see the cheese was white and not yellow. One thing I really loved was that it was not overly cheesy. Just the right amount and melted perfectly. The omelette was quite tasty. My husband had an apple waffle that he really enjoyed. He said the hash browns were a little lacking in flavor. I also had a chocolate chip pancake to satisfy my sweet tooth. I did not like it at all. It was flat and not flavorful. All of the chocolate chips were at the bottom of the pancake instead of being distributed throughout. They had melted and then became hardened on the bottom. They made an impression, but not in a good way. We went back today and took our kids. My husband and one of the kids ordered a chunky monkey waffle. It was a waffle topped with fresh bananas, melty chocolate chunks, coconut, and whipped cream. They were huge!! Both loved them! My step-daughter ordered a spicy egg enchilada and even though she is not always adventurous with food, loved all of the ingredients. I tried it, and together we decided it was so good it should be added to the menu permanently! So good! My step-son ordered a side of bacon to share, and it was cooked to perfection. Crisp level and taste-wise probably the best bacon we've had. I ordered another egg white omelette and was happy to see that they are consistently good. I decided to give the pancakes another try since everything else had been decent. The special was chocolate hazelnut. Once again, I was really disappointed. They were again flat and without flavor. The chocolate was lacking and there was an overabundance of hazelnuts. All were once again at the bottom. If it were not for the pancakes, this would be a 5 star review for me. The pancakes definitely get a 1, and I will not be ordering them again. The only way they might be good is to not have ingredients IN them, but on top, and the toppings would have to be flavorful. Everyone has room to improve...the rest of the food is great, so if this is the only menu item that's not so great, I can overlook the pancakes. Besides, my opinion is just that, an opinion. Other people may have enjoyed them. read more

It's all about the soup! Two offerings a day with all your classics like French Onion, clam chowder, and split pea and ham to more creative ones like chicken tandorri, pumpkin nutmeg and avocado silk. The best soup place I've ever been to and it's all home made. The location is great as it sits right along the Windham Rail Trail. They are open every day but Monday and stay open until 8 on Thursday and Friday with dinner specials. Everything is home made and cooked buy the owners. The breakfast and lunch menu is a good size with much to choose from. They have indoor and outdoor seating for the nice weather. It's family owned and the staff is great. It's also an old time country store with tons of knick knacks and keepsakes to hunt around for. It's hard to pick a favorite dish, as the daily specials rotate so often, there's always something new. The Orange Leafy salad and meatloaf sandwich are favorites from the everyday menu. Locally brewed Squamscot sodas are available along with Richardson's ice cream and maps of the rail trail itself. It's really just a great, family owned business with quality food and service. That's hard to find and it's a business all the locals are happy to help succeed. The only thing they could have is a few more vegetarian options besides a salad and a veggie wrap. read more

My girlfriend and I go here nearly every weekend. My default is the Super Meadow Muffin sandwich (egg, meat and hash browns all on a super-soft and tasty Portuguese muffin), but they have the most original and delicious specials every week. I've never gotten anything here that disappointed. The staff is super friendly, the place is very cute inside. We've gotten lunch a few times as well and it's been amazing. Take time before or after eating to browse thru the country gifts on display. You can find something for anyone on your list. Fairly reasonable prices as country gifts go. This place has everything. Atmosphere, great sandwiches, and a country store. It is a converted house with a small (maybe 15 people inside dining area) that is surrounded by some of the wonderful trinkets to be purchased at the connecting store. The tables and chairs are an eclectic collection from everyone over 50 grandmothers house. In the good weather there are tables and chairs outside. I try a different sandwich every time I visit. To name them all I would have to put half the menu on this review. Try your favorite, I promise you won't be disappointed. Youngsters wait on you and I'm gonna say that they are amazing. Personality, cordial, and professional. The country store is packed with all kids of goodies. Not only the items you might guess that would be at a country store, like handmade items, but clothing and jewelry. Fun store to just stop in for a great, unique gift. With Windham growing with mega mansions it is so refreshing to see a country shop like this. read more

As the other reviewers said, an adorable country cafe with good food, nice people, and reasonable prices. LOVED the meatloaf sandwich. By the way, it's very close to the rail trail that runs from downtown Derry (behind converted train station, natch) through Windham and Salem. Of course this all makes sense since you walking distance to what used to be a train station. There is an old caboose and a little train museum. It's a nice place to rest and they have ice cream too. If you're at an outside table, the help brings the food out to you. Sweet! read more

My husband and I have made this our weekend treat. I get their biscuit egg sandwich (and an extra biscuit on the side), and he gets their super meadow muffin. Both are out of this world! My daughter always get a "Mickey mouse" pancake (not on the menu), which she loves. I'm a pancake lover, and have to say this is the only bad thing I've tasted. My husband goes there often for lunch, and has never had a bad meal. The pulled pork sandwich they had once was his favorite. I have only had lunch once, and it was delicious. I have never had a bad meal here! Breakfast on the rail trail, a salad after a walk, or ordering takeout with friends from work. The sipping soups are all unique and tasty. There is a fantastic special every day, but I am partial to Kay's salad with chicken salad or a meatloaf sandwich. A nice little bonus is the adjoining gift shop to browse through while waiting for food or after your meal. I'd give it more stars if I could! read more

I discovered this little gem after seeing friends on Facebook posting that they were there. I took my teenage son for breakfast. He ordered the kitchen sink omelette, which wasn't on the menu, but they happily obliged. I ordered a BLT with home fries and beans. Unfortunately they don't serve baked beans. The bacon was the best I've ever had and the home fries were really good as well. The portions were perfect and a great value for the price. Really enjoyed lunch here Saturday! I had a hot pastrami sandwich served on marble rye with brown mustard and my husband had the grilled cheese. My sandwich was excellent, probably one of the best pastrami sandwiches I've had so far. Our meals were fresh and obviously made from scratch in the kitchen. Our two sandwiches (which came with chips and a crispy pickle) plus a Coke came to under 14$, which is a steal for the size and quality of the sandwiches. I also love how the dining tables are spread out through the little shop - it makes for some fun browsing during the short wait for your food. read more

Cute, clean, quaint, with delicious food. Specials change, but everything comes out hot and, well almost surprisingly, great, considering this seems like an unlikely little gem from the outside or the initial walk-in experience. You walk in, and find that you have to order at the counter, after perusing the menu with the latest items up on the wall. A little pressure, and it's usually crowded, cramped in a tight little space. Sitting at a table is a little intimidating if you like elbow room and private conversation. However, the food comes out hot, and it's very, very good. A real find with something for everyone, including vegetable-lovers or vegetarians, that is reasonably-priced. read more

Today we went into the Windham Junction to get a very late Christmas tree and some yummy breakfast. The breakfast sandwiches were incredibly delicious definitely hit the spot. The atmosphere is oh so cozy and cute. It's the antique home style feel. Now you wondering why is there only two stars. It's because the front counter employee was flat out rude. As a former front counter employee, I was not impressed with the rudeness. I did not feel respected as a customer. If I'm paying more then I should for the food, I should at least get a smile and pleasant thank you from who I'm buying it from. read more

Three of us were there today at 1:00PM. The place is quaint, cute and nice to sit outside in the breeze. Now for the real stuff: I ordered for myself and my wife: a hamburger, 2 orders of fries and 2 bottles of soda. 1. We got 1 order of fries and one order of onion rings. When I asked the young lady "Who are the onion rings for?", she said YOU ORDERED THE ONION RINGS !! I told her, once again, I ordered the hamburger with a side of fries. Her correct response should have been "Oh, I'm sorry, I thought you ordered onion rings". 2. The fries were horrible. Soaked with oil. You had to scrape the salt off of them in order to try to eat them. 3. It was very expensive for what you got. Hamburger, 2 fries and 2 sodas for $20.06. Well, as I said at the beginning, it was great to be able to sit outside, in the shade, with the cool breeze. As for the rest of our visit: NEVER AGAIN. read more

The food is really good and seems fresh. My complaint is the lack of manners and lack of general pleasant attitude from the young people that take my order each time.
