Delicious!! We came down in the off-season (intentionally) and didn't realize that most things open back up in March. Oh well, the Kill Devil Grill was one of the places that was open and we were so glad we tried it! Love the diner in the front, but there is a bigger dining room, which explains all of the cars in the lot. The waiter/bartender, Dan, recommended the fried shrimp, which were truly the best I've ever had. The batter is flavorful, they aren't greasy, and even better with the remoulade sauce. My husband tried one of the specials: Alaskan halibut with mashed potatoes and a sweet and sour sauce. Good thing we like each other because we were definitely eating off if each other's plates. The halibut with sweet and sour was a combination I'd never heard of, but one that I would definitely order again. First time here while on vacation and my whole family really enjoyed the food here! We appreciated how the server took time to explain the daily specials. Service was fast and food was delicious. Looked up best grills in the area and this place popped up as the best in Kill Devils Hill. The place is easily located, has plenty of parking and has a cool look throughout the inside eand outside of the establishment. Unfortunately, it was extremely loud and the food was subpar. When we walked in, we almost had to yell just to hear each other talk. The music was loud and the ambiance was even louder with everyone trying to talk over the next person. I had the Big Kahuna Burger and my wife had the spinach and artichoke chips and dip. My burger was undercooked and very greasy. I only ate about 1/4 of it before I gave up. The dip was decent, but it came out cold. The chips that comes with it was about the best thing on the table. Unfortunately, they needed a little salt and there was no salt to be found. Needless to say, it was a bit disappointing after seeing all the great reviews. On a side note, service was good and the food did come out quick. read more

The food was good and it would have been a very enjoyable experience but we had an uninvited guest in the form of a large cockroach that joined us at the end of our meals. Needless to say we left shortly afterward since we had finished our meal. Unfortunately the couple sitting directly behind were not as enthusiastic when the criter went to visit their booth. My husband has been coming to this place for 10 years. The food and service was amazing. There was about an hour wait around 7pm on a Saturday but we're able to grab a bar seat within minutes. Definitely recommend bar seating as we chatted up the bartenders and met some others that were stopping by for a drink. Definitely get their Black and Blue lemonade that has muddle blackberries and blueberry vodka. For dinner, we got the cheesesteak egg rolls, Caesar salad, the fish catch of the day, and crab cake entree. Always get the fish special - grilled rockfish over cheesy grits, pico, and lime crema. We saw great reviews on Kill Devil Grill so we ordered a late night meal of Seazers salad with grilled chicken and Chicken wings with the house special sauce. The salad and the chicken were fresh and the chicken was hot but the sauce seemed to be a toss up between a blackened seasoning and a jerk sauce (not really a fan of the sauce). This restaurant never fails me! I had the Spinach Dip for an appetizer. It's probably the best Spinach and Artichoke dip I've ever had, and the chips that came with it were unique and delicious! For my entree I had the Southern Fried Chicken Salad. Their fried chicken is to die for and the dressing that came on the salad went very well with the chicken. I had the Strawberry Shortcake for dessert and it did not disappoint, I finished it in about 90 seconds! We arrived at almost 6pm and waited 30 minutes to be seated - only because we decided to split up into two tables of four - not sat close by to each other. Which was fine. Tbh I don't think they even had a big enough table for our party. We noticed mainly booths. The ambience was nice - old fashioned diner. The waitress was great. Food was mid. Crabcake sandwich didn't really have much flavor unless you put the tartar sauce on it. Which was a much different rendition of tartar sauce. Was flavorful but reminded me of a McChicken. Came here with five friends while we were in town. There was a decent wait because the place isn't huge, but it's cool that you can grab a drink at the bar and take it outside while you wait. I tried the black and blue lemonade (omg so good), the kdg salad, and a swordfish special - everything was excellent and came out pretty quick given how packed the place was! My friend and I both ordered the kdg salad, and our server suggested we share since the portion was pretty big. I really appreciated this as it would have been way too much wasted food otherwise as we couldn't have each eaten one on our own. The crab cakes here are really good, but the best thing is and always will be the key lime pie. It is large and very filling so I recommend sharing. I'm a tourist (hate to admit it). We've been eating at all the places that seemed polished and shiney. It took this random stop on the way back from the Avalon Fishing Pier to finally find a restaurant that made a really great meal with amazing service. There is a retro-dinner vibe with energy (music and a little crowd noise without being loud). The food was AMAZING. We started with the cheesesteak eggs rolls. Crispy wrapper with delicious steak flavor. Marinara sauce doesn't seem like it should work with cheesesteak, but it so does. Ruth Chris' should ask them how they get that full flavor from beef. The fried shrimp were perfection. Large shrimp with home breading that were cooked exactly on the mark. Was this from a high end pretentious seafood restaurant - nope, its still a diner. Our annual trip to OBX is simply not complete without a delightful meal from this incredible restaurant. Today we arrived for lunch about 20 minutes before they opened only to find another 20 people already in line ... and probably 10 others soon arrived behind us. Even though it was already quite busy, we were warmly greeted and prompted seated. Johnny was our server ..he offered suggestions, described in detail the creative specials offered today and just simply "took care of us" during our stay. Wow wow wow!! I must begin my review of this magnificent gem with a personal anecdote. I grew up in the West Mifflin area of Pittsburgh, and there used to be an ice cream and burger place called Smitty's. It was an odd kind of place, where men would sit and drink beer and smoke all day, so it had a strange dive bar kind of feel for an ice cream parlor, and always smelled like tobacco. I LOVED going here as a kid, because of the rainbow Jimmies they had for their ice cream, and because their burgers were amazing. Perfectly grilled, cheese melting into the top. Sadly, Smitty's eventually closed down and was replaced by a drug store. You know how people joke about spending their whole life chasing the high of fill-in-the-blank from their childhood? I have spent my adult life looking for a burger like Smitty's, but never found one. Eventually I chalked it up to the limitations of my childhood palate - that the burgers tasted better in my memory than they really were. That what I loved about that taste was the nostalgia and childhood memories that I associated with it. Until today!!! I ordered The Royale With Cheese and when I tasted that first bite, I was immediately transported back to third grade, biting into a piping hot cheeseburger from Smitty's. I had finally found a burger just as amazing! Onto my review!! Firstly, you wouldn't know this place was here unless you were directed to it; it's not conspicuous and it's not on the main road. It was recommended to me by a colleague who is a native of the coast. It looks like a regular old diner inside. But don't let its lack of grandeur fool you - this place is an absolute GEM! Despite the fact that many establishments in the OBX unfortunately take advantage of unsuspecting tourists and their convenient location to serve only mediocrity, that is not the case here. My burger was grilled to perfection, the bun perfectly toasted, delicious and fresh shredded lettuce and sliced tomatoes. The cheese was melting into each juicy crevice of burger. The fries, too, were spot-on: crispy but not burned, no whiff of having been previously frozen, salty and delicious. I may have a salty palate, it's true, but really, I'll never understand why some restaurants skimp on the salt with their French fries. We're already eating deep fried potatoes! We've already made bad choices! Why be shy now? Pour on the salt! The hostess and waitress were also adorably sweet and polite. The waitress even felt that we weren't given enough fries and got us another plateful!! I am so absolutely overjoyed to have found this place, and cannot wait to return. But this special completely justified my confidence. Last time I spent a week on the Outer Bank I ate here three times (daily specials each time). Our first attempt at lunch here was a fail. We walked in around 1 pm and were told it would be an hour wait...yikes! We left but definitely wanted to come back and see what all the hype was about. We came back for brunch/lunch the next day at opening, 11:30 am. So glad we came at opening time because there were actually people lined up waiting for the doors to open. We had no problem walking in and getting a seat right away. Within 15 minutes every table was taken. It is super small inside and mostly booths for 4-5 people. When we left about an hour later there were people waiting outside for tables. The inside is super cute and looks like an old school diner. Everyone working there was very friendly. Our waitress was excellent. On to the food. I ordered the fried chicken salad, in a half-assed attempt to eat healthier. It was amazing! The buttermilk dressing it came with sounded kind of gross but was perfect! My husband had the tuna special. It was fresh and delicious. My daughter was feeling hungry and ordered the half rack of ribs....also amazing. Since my little guy had the kids meal his came with ice cream, so we all decided to join him for dessert. We shared the strawberry shortcake and it was unbelievable! The cake was moist and the strawberries delicious. Definitely go if you're in the area just try to plan your visit around peak times.
