This was my first time at this chain restaurant. The food is not authentic at all. This is mostly "Americanized" Mexican food. It was what one would expect from a chain restaurant so no surprises there. Service was okay. I had the Jack Nicholson and my friend had the quesadilla. Meh. None of it was great. My partner and I stopped in for lunch on a Friday while heading out of state. The place wasn't busy yet and the staff was swift and friendly. L My partner enjoyed the green (avocado?) salsa, but it was too creamy for my taste whereas he thought the red salsa was too sweet and I thought it was a normal, decent red salsa if not as chunky as I prefer. We ordered the Jack Nicholson and the Elvis Presley, and it took longer to come out than we expected for the amount of people there and considering it was lunch time. My partner said that the Elvis was bland and he didn't particularly enjoy it. The Jack seemed to have sat for a few minutes bc it looked dry and was not hot. It was jucier than I expected, though, and flavorful. Our waitress was friendly and attentive with just one forgotten request: tortillas for the Elvis. She was accommodating throughout, and we appreciated her service. Overall, the food was just ok, and we felt it was overpriced. We can get much better quality for cheaper in Houston, Baton Rouge, or NOLA. Even the lunch prices weren't that good of a deal. I wouldn't stop here again if I were passing through. read more

11/17/18 Wife and I ate at this business. Waitress was good and restaurant was clean. Food was hot when delivered at table, at least what LITTLE that there was of it. Ordered fajitas and got them--- 4 strings of chicken with a smear of beans and rice on another 1/4 plate. The second 1/4 plate had a dip of sour cream, a dip of guacamole and some tomato chips with jalapeno peppers added in. Had to request a tortilla to wrap around the string of 4 pieces of chicken. Maybe a manager change or a cook FIRING is due for this place. I would have been happy paying $ 2.00 for these few spoonfuls, but $10.99 is extremely high priced.. I cannot even believe the amount of food you get at this place for cheap. There are so many options around ten bucks with so much food I couldn't decide. I had to just send the food back for a refund. Order fajita enchiladas for 14.60 and got three strips of meat. Not big strips, smaller then what you'd get at TACO BELL!!! Then they charged $4 for a cup of quest that was in a cup so small it looked like a butter cup! To boot all this was after a frustrating call trying to order where the man wanted to continually argue with me trying to confuse me. Can someone explain to me what it is about "Tex-Mex" that makes it differ from just "Mex"? All I can figure out is a penchant for ground beef with "taco sauce" and a liberal use of that nacho cheese sauce you can get at many ballparks around the country, and at the chainiest of the chain movie theaters. Jalapeno Tree is a regional Tex-Mex chain. It looks festive from the outside, but that is mainly a sham. Inside it is a big warehouse-looking space with undersized tables for four covered with vinyl floral-patterned table-"cloths". The food is big but bland. They have a bar but it only serves Margaritas and beer: 3 beers and 2 kinds of Margaritas (regular and strawberry), and when I went they were out of one kind. Another person at the table ordered a salad, and the "dressing" they provided was that nacho cheese sauce. Having been to Mexico many times, I can say without a doubt that this was far from authentic. Further evidence re lack of authenticity - inside on top of a wall this restaurant sports a giant statue of a french fry man -- kind of like that guy on the cartoon network but with legs wearing blue and white striped pants. One scary dude. P.S. El Chico across the street isn't great, but it easily beats this. If you are stuck in Marshall, I would avoid the Jalapeno Tree. Don't be taken in by its colorful building or the fact that there are many cars in the parking lot. read more

This is a Tex-Mex chain restaurant. I consider it to be better than the other Tex-Mex area options. The manager here is obviously dedicated to having customers leave with a good experience. I'm a little surprised the reviews for this place are so low, and I'm appalled that someone thought El Chico's was a better choice! No offense to El Chico's but, I mean, its El Chico's. Anyway, I have only been here once but I was actually really impressed with the food. Of course I didn't have super high expectations so that probably helped. I ordered chicken and beef fajitas and I was blown away by the beef. It was deliciously marinated, I didn't even want a tortilla, I just wanted to eat it by itself. They also had a butter sauce you could drizzle over the meat that was really good as well. The beef was definetly tastier than the chicken. I wasn't super impressed by the salsa but I did taste my nephews corn dog and it was actually really good! Lol Free soft serve is a nice touch. Will definetly come back. read more

I've never had such an unpleasant experience in my life. First my family and I were seated then we ordered and the food took a life time to come out. When the food came out it was wrong so we had to wait all over again for the right food. The manager wasn't making it any better. The people beside us had food dropped on them and the manager kept walking as if she did not see it happen. When or food finally came out the second time it was alright until my mom found a long hair in her food. Great food and service at fair prices. Not all locations are the same, but this one has always consistently impressed me. Management that walks the dining rooms and not just asks how things are, but will dart off to the back and get something if you need or want it? That's a sign of pride and ownership to me - I've been to places where I have been MANY times and have never even seen a manager poke their head out of the kitchen. They have all the typical Tex-Mex fares, but I recommend you go for something a little different like their Fried Shrimp Tacos and get the seasoned steamed veggies. Tortilla Soup is on here! JG score of 6/10 (+3 for the Tortilla soup, 0 for atmosphere, +1 for price, +1 for fountain Diet Dr Pepper, 0 for typical service and +1 for we like to return) We give the food here a +3 really only for the Tortilla Soup. We have gone on a Tortilla soup tour of Marshall and this is by far the best we have found. It is delicious and they give you by far more than anywhere else... like a bucket of soup. Otherwise, the food here is maybe a +1.5. We do like the green sauce and chips too.... a lot. Our last visit we even tried the burger. Funny, cause we always laugh at people who eat somewhere like this that is Mexican food and then they get American food like a burger and then leave a scathing review= idiots. Well, someone told us the burger was good so we thought to try it. Then as we were ordering we saw the chicken fried steak and said to ourselves, oh hell, let's just do both. The burger was good= not enough meat but the jalapeño bun was good and the melted white cheddar. Fries are good and the chicken fried steak was of the standard frozen type but actually kinda what we like anyway like old school cafeteria lunch style....it was okay. The atmosphere is nice. They did take out the middle bar which helps. It is large in here and can be loud. The price is fine. They do have Diet Dr Pepper which of course goes well with Mexican Food.
