The Huddle, with its worn interior, haphazardly placed bar furniture and equally worn pool tables evokes a time where more places like this existed. I'm not really a drinker, but I always have this fantasy of going into a straight up dive bar and getting shitfaced with other people who are only there to get shitfaced. The Huddle is more than adequate in fulfilling that fantasy. Okay, so I didn't get totally drunk off my ass, but if I were to, I'd want to do it here. Cheap beers, cheap pool, cheap fun. I came here with a couple friends on a Friday night, and we spent a good four hours here. I bought nearly all the beer that night and half the pool games we played, and I spent about $30. One "Can I buy you a drink?" at any club will cost you that much alone. The crowd here is pretty chill and the jukebox has an infinite playlist (they actually had Blood Red Shoes??). I love The Huddle! I always forget it's here though. The other night my boyfriend wanted to take me on a date. Originally he said that he would take me to The Wayfarer (formerly The Detroit Bar) because we live next door, we could walk there, and it's also a "nicer" bar. I didn't want nice. I wanted my favorite, Stella Cider, and I wanted pool. The Huddle has both, so I got my way and we went. I've always loved dive bars. Well, that's all I've ever gone to. The smells and cast of characters is always comforting to me. This bar is really a diamond in a the rough, but like the opposite of that because everywhere else in Newport/Costa Mesa is too expensive, too cluby, and well, I just don't care for the crowd. Not a bad local spot! Super fun bar games which I love. Drinks are basic, service is very consistent. If you want somewhere convenient and easy to hang out, or play some bar games while you drink, it's a good spot! I've been there a few times when they have a taco truck stationed out front too which has been great. read more

My friends have been inviting me to this place for the past few years and I've declined every time with the same response: "I don't play pool." Well tonight I finally I obliged and man, have I been missing out! It was pretty full tonight (Saturday), but my friends say to go during the week where it's relatively empty and you have full control of the juke box. This place isn't fancy by any means. It's a local joint jam packed with regulars of all sorts: old drunks, bros, rockers, and weirdos all together, minding their own business, having a good time... It's not really my scene (as in, not "cool enough") but I'm learning to get over that. I can see why people come here. TRANSLATION: The perfect place to come hangout when you want to go out, but not "go out." As in, no need to dress up. No need to impress. And most importantly, no need to deplete your wallet. I LOVE THIS PLACE! I'm here 2-3 times a week to play pool. It was my first bar in CA and it still holds my heart in it's hands. The bartenders and bouncers are all really sweet and awesome and they are always very accommodating with everything. Drinks are always poured extremely strong and the music isn't half bad (lots of 90s boy bands and hip hop if you're into that) unless the person who has control of the juke box is a heavy metal freak. DRINKS ARE EXTREMELY CHEAP 4 rounds of 2 drinks has been at most $30. Not bad at all. People can smoke on the porch but it's a little cramped and I like outside the front door way better. There's also a taco guy that makes pretty good drunk food (if you don't want a hot pocket or pizza, yes, the huddle does sell both). Say hi to Crystal for me if you are ever in there. Heck, say hi to me because I'm usually in there. There are about 7-8 tables and it's not cramped at all. If one isn't open, just go around and ask people. LEARN POOL MANNERS prior to entering. You wanna complain about bros? Move to a different country. They're everywhere and this part of Costa Mesa is no exception. But this bar is slightly above your average, bused dive. Be warned that the juke is digital, so the tunes are inherently sub-standard. And some weeknights are unfortunately full of middle-aged men gawking at the suspiciously attractive barkeeps. I have been going to the Huddle for about a year now as my go to dive bar (approx 1-3 times a month.) Its a great place to meet people, drink, play some darts or pool. However, on my most recent visit it became painfully obvious their popular alcohol choices were being watered down. Fireball tasted like sugary cinnamon juice and the Beam was yellow and bland. Neither had any bite or burn to speak of, very uncharacteristic for the first drinks of the night. For our last drink of the night we ordered the top shelf bourbon to investigate. The drink was incomparably strong and solidified my hunch the common shots were watered down. I feel betrayed and disappointed by my local go-to! The venue is still a pleasant experience, however, I suggest you stick to beer here and save some money. read more

We were next door at the very posh Mesa when a couple of us decided to head next door for some real atmosphere. The Huddle it was then! Dive bar at it's finest. We went from 8 dollar beers to 8 dollar pitchers of PBR. The bartender, like in all good dive bars, had a heavy hand when it came to the pour. The crowd was pretty diverse. From a could of old school drunk old men, rockabilly girls, bros and their hoes and everything in between. I will be back for sure. As for the awful reviews...pull the stick out of your butt people...it is a dive bar. Pretty decent little bar in Costa Mesa. It's one of those spots you just have to know about bc it's located in what appears to be a strip mall. Parking is free in the lot, of course. They have fun games like darts, a full bar with yummy specials n shots n friendly staff. It's dark, the music is bumpin' n the crowd is pretty chill. It's a dive bar. Horrible service by the friendly bartenders. Yes I am that guy who had to literally yell at the bartenders after waiting 20+ minutes to get service is just plain wrong. This happens consistently, whether or not the place is busy. NO EXCUSES! I counted 17 people getting their orders in and completed before me. And that doesn't count another gentleman who was waiting ever so patiently before me! I was asked to leave for telling it like it is. Oh so now I am the bad guy. No manager to even attempt to smooth things over. Nope. It's "if you don't like it, get out and stay out" attitude. I didn't make it personal, no name calling, no personal attacks, just hey can I close my tab. I had to yell to get someone's attention to close a tab after 20 minutes and watching everyone else being served. Too bad, as it is in a good location, decent pool tables, nice crowd etc. I get it. The place is busy. BUT, when you DON'T serve people make them wait and wait and wait and wait, it's just plain bad management and bad training. Don't get me wrong, the bartenders work hard, but not smart. It's like one ice cube at a time. I get tossed after complaining about horrible service and actually left a decent tip. The place is like bro's before Hoes. Arrogant attitudes and just flat out being ignorant to customers is ridiculous. They much rather walk around hugging each other being all lovey dovey and don't give a crap about the clients, unless you are one the "them". I have been in there a few times and it's always the same B.S. Like they say, "you get what you pay for". Parts of the place are certainly divey then some of the remodeling tell us they want it to be more. The end result is that this is now just a run of the mill bar. One of the best places ever in the area for chill pool and pints... Cheap drinks and like 7 pool tables, $1 per game which is amazeballs and lovingly generous. A true dive hangout for when you need it. Niceties: 2 very affordable dart boards and tons of darts, cheap drinks, great hours, good people helping you get faded (or just good staff in general--I ordered JUST a Coke there once and didn't get any attitude--but good), nice relaxed patrons in the place, good selection on liquor, good price on pitchers with a couple selections, and they even serve 151 there in case you want to regret the next day terribly (which is one of my favorite things to do, apparently). It's divey for reals (not hipster divey which makes my bank account cringe and ahole tighten-up), and so the pool tables and a few things won't be super-plush, thought you can tell that they do take care of their stuff and upkeep. Really one of the few bar type places in this part of the OC that won't have you constipated from eating too much ramen since you spent all your money at an expensive bars. Finally: great hours posted outside--I think it was something ridiculous like '7am to 2am'--inconceivable! Cons: Bring a DD or be ready for a slightly dicey path to the 405 or 55 freeways. OR... you can sober up there with Coca Cola's, or perhaps do a bump of coke off one of the toilets (no really don't do it, that's no bueno in many ways). But anyhoo, it's not rare, at all, to see cops in that area. Shark club is like down the street, after all. 5 stars for being great at what it is. read more

Last Sunday was my first trip to The Huddle. It was actually pretty fun. I thought it was going to be a grungy dive bar, but it really was a nice open atmosphere, pretty clean, and the bartender was extremely friendly. There were really nice people there, and everyone got along very nicely, unlike some other places. Drinks we absolutely excellent here! No one is stiffing you at this joint, you get what you pay for. The music selection is great. I'm really not a person that likes to just "hang out" at bars, I like some activity, mostly I enjoy my karaoke, but this place wasn't bad at all. For me to be giving a bar this high a rating, without karaoke, is pretty rare, so definitely check this place out. The have pool tables, darts, music, great drinks and a friendly atmosphere... It's a pool hall/bar that is never really all that full... but it has its moments! I prefer to not go here, or any bars like this that are sort of pubescent versions of dive bars--if you want to hit up a pool hall, go to Q Club in Costa Mesa off of Mesa Verde because you will get a table, drinks and a good crowd. If you want a dive bar, go to The Helm next to Patrick's Irish Pub on Harbor Blvd or the Pub on the corner of 17th Street and Newport Blvd. The only reason you should go to this place is 1. you live very close to it or 2. you know someone who works there and they're going to hook you up with drinks, otherwise don't waste the gas. read more

The rating I would give this place would be between a three and a 3.5. The bartenders are on point. There quick on serving alcohol most of the time. On one occasion when I went, the bartender was nowhere to be found. I'm assuming they were outback smoking a cigarette but, when I got back, they provided the drinks that I needed. The pool tables are clean, without stains, and in good condition. The game will cost you a dollar in quarters in there to quarter machines within the location. This is a little bit higher than most of the other locations the charge $.75 a game. But, if you're in the area and you want to play darts or billiards, definitely check this place out read more

We came here on a Sunday because we were over at The Camp and wanted to watch the game and couldn't find a sports bar. This was just a walk around the corner but it could be called the Anti-Camp. Everyone was watching football having fun. Lots of Packer fans when we were in there. It's a good, dark dive bar with a decent TV set up and mediocre beer selection. No stuffed zucchini blossoms or blackberry iced teas here - decent place to have a few beers, make some new friends and catch up on the scores if you're in the area - not sure it's a destination though but great atmosphere. read more

How the hell do they get away with indoor smoking? Ok, smoking is not a pet peeve of mine, but it gives you an idea of the kind of place this is. It's small, dark and dirty. There's nothing to offer here. The bartender had didn't act like a) a lot of fake attitude to pretend to give the place 'personality' or b) true bad attitude. Just a chick doing a job. What a concept! Super cheap beer. This is a true dive bar. Nothing wrong with that, but they don't have a great beer selection either.
