The food was really good, but the service was very slow and impersonal. BBQ was excellent, sides were delicious too, and the BBQ sauce at the table was good. They have letters on the top but without an explanation we just had to try them all to see what they were. "G" was on the NC Style, "OG" was we maybe original. The plates were very well loaded up, but the waitress put them on the opposite side of the table and not near us, she did tell us to just slide them around. The decor was awesome, seats were comfy. As we left, no one at the hostess booth said anything, but a "See you next time" or "Thank you, have a great day" would have gone a long way. This place came highly recommended to us, but the service really fell flat.

6 smoked wings (available Friday and Saturday) They were fantastic!

The place is small but got packed quickly! Obviously a town favorite. There is also a bar attached. The service was speedy, accurate and kind. Good for families. Food was fantastic!

Stopped by for the first time & ordered a meal to go. Our food came out quickly (less than 7 minutes). We got pulled pork & brisket with house made mild BBQ sauce & Carolina gold BBQ sauce. Both sauces were very good. We received generous servings of the pork & brisket and they were tasty. Our sides of baked beans, potato salad & green beans were meh. We'd return here but probably skip the sides next time.

Brisket sandwich and fries. - A metal plate contains a partially eaten peanut butter and jelly sandwich with a side of French fries. The sandwich appears to have peanut butter and jelly spread on bread, with some filling visible. The plate is placed on a restaurant table with a menu, a drink, and a straw nearby. The background shows additional food items and table settings, indicating a casual dining environment.

If you are ever driving along Hwy 64 and hungry for some good food, don't hesitate to stop here! We enjoyed a quick lunch. The restaurant is dim lit, but it's a cozy place, friendly service, with locals chatting over lunch. The brisket and pulled pork sandwiches were great! The hot bbq sauce has the perfect amount of spice and the Carolina gold is also yummy.

Returning customner and food is still great. Tried something new . The waitress had said the soup was brisket and noodle soup. Got that and it was so worth it . Ordered the two meat combo . Ribs and pulled pork. Are the two sides could not finish the rest . Took it home had ribs for dinner and pulled pork the other night. Plenty of booths and tables . Waitress was very friendly and helpful, still recommend eating here.

Picked this place on a whim as we were passing through town, and we found a gem! Come-as-you-are, super casual atmosphere with very fast service. Both of our entrees were delicious and a great price. Will definitely return if we are in the area again!

Dark indoor seating, fries cooked to a good crisp. Homemade sauces are very indulgent. Burger is well seasoned. Styrofoam cups for sides. Toast is low quality. Burnt green beans. Ketchup with high fructose corn syrup. Sour cream comes in a small plastic pouch.

The best I could show without being one of those weird food photographers. - A burger with a dark-colored patty, topped with lettuce and melted cheese, is partially visible with a hand holding the bun. French fries are placed beside the burger on a metal tray. The tray is on a surface with a partially visible menu or advertisement underneath. The image captures the food presentation at a casual dining or fast-food restaurant.

This place has a very specific ambiance. The windows have mirror tint on them, so they're clearly going for the 'always drinking time' theme. Other than that immediate reaction, there's a particular smell. I can't place it. It's like a mix between soured laundry and probably the barbecue sauce. You don't notice it after a while. I got the brisket burger, which I was told was a ground mix of brisket and hamburger, smoked for an hour. I expect they toss it back on the grill for just a few minutes to get some heat into it when ordered, because it arrived about 5 minutes after I ordered. The burger was lukewarm. If it was fresh, I think it would have been really good. It wasn't bad, but without the barbecue sauce, I think it would have been bland. It was swimming in mayo, so maybe ask for that on the side. The fries looked crispy, but were right on the edge. Better than most McDonald's at least. I smothered mine in sauce as well, and it turned out pretty tasty. The menu shows Pepsi, but they have Coke. Thanks be to the pop gods. I'm giving it a 4 because I know if my burger was fresh and the fries slightly crispier, it would have deserved that.

Pork Nachos - A metal bowl contains pork nachos with tortilla chips topped with shredded pork, melted cheese, diced tomatoes, and other ingredients. The dish is served on a dark surface, with a blue cup visible in the background. The nachos are layered with various toppings, including shredded meat and cheese, and garnished with diced vegetables.

Good BBQ just Off the INTERSTATE, so look for it! Excellent nachos big enough if you want to share. So good getvyour own nachos. Friendly staff and quick attentive service. Always a must stop now when rolling east on I -64.

a bowl of food on a table - A bowl of cooked pasta with pieces of meat, seasoning, and sauce is on a checkered paper liner on a wooden table. A metal spoon is beside the bowl, and a salt shaker is in the background. The setting appears to be a bar or casual restaurant, with a Jim Beam bar mat visible in the background and dim lighting.

Smokin' J's - Half slab St Louis Ribs

Smokin' J's

(136 reviews)

From the moment you step inside, the aroma hits first: a deep, hickory-laced perfume that signals…read morehours of slow devotion rather than shortcuts. This is barbecue that announces itself honestly. No gimmicks, no pretension--just meat treated with respect. We started off with the Texas Sausage Sampler which includes 3 Sausages. Jalapeno Cheddar, Hickory Smoke and Original Old Fashioned. Served with Carolina Gold Sauce, Mustard and Horseradish. The sauce is outstanding. Smoking J's Rib House in Ashland, Kentucky, is the kind of place that reminds you why barbecue isn't just food--it's culture, patience, and pride rendered in smoke and fire. The ribs are the undisputed star. Thick-cut, generously portioned, and lacquered with a bark that balances sweetness, smoke, and spice, they arrive with that elusive perfection every pitmaster chases. The meat pulls cleanly from the bone without collapsing into mush, proof of disciplined temperature control and timing. Each bite delivers layers: smoke up front, pork richness at the core, and a restrained tang from the sauce that enhances rather than smothers. Brisket lovers will find plenty to admire. The slices boast a pronounced smoke ring and a pepper-forward crust, with fat rendered to a buttery softness that melts on the tongue. It's assertive, confident barbecue--unapologetically Southern, yet precise enough to impress even seasoned purists. The sides refuse to play second fiddle. Mac and cheese was amazing, creamy with a baked top that adds texture, while the baked beans carry a subtle smokiness that echoes the pit rather than competing with it. Coleslaw provides a crisp, cooling contrast, cutting through the richness exactly as it should. What truly elevates Smoking J's, though, is its sense of place. This isn't barbecue chasing trends or Instagram aesthetics. It's barbecue rooted in community--food that feels earned, familiar, and deeply satisfying. The atmosphere is unpretentious and welcoming, the kind where regulars are greeted like family and newcomers are quickly converted. Smoking J's Rib House doesn't just serve great barbecue--it reinforces why Ashland deserves a seat at the table in Kentucky's smokehouse conversation. It's a destination for locals, a worthy stop for travelers, and a reminder that when barbecue is done right, it doesn't need to shout. The smoke speaks for itself.

They got some fried pickles for the table and shared with us...these were pretty good. It was good, but it needed more corn nuggets and less cauliflower. Each couple got a 16oz Ribeye to share and an extra baked pot on the side. The baked potato was excellent. The steaks were decent, but not the best I have ever had. Our steak had little to no seasoning on it, so it was not the greatest. The whole meal was okay, but I would not make the two hour trip from home to eat here. Honestly, I would choose Texas Roadhouse. Not a bad place, just mid. I was disappointed.

Well, that is the feeling you will have if you want BBQ and you come here. The customer waiting motioned to me and said, "what ever you do, don't get the mashed potatoes, they are too salty to even eat". Then I told the waitress I was struggling between the pulled pork and chicken which she replied with "if you are going to get any of the meat, the brisket is the only thing worth eating". That was a story made up, the lukewarm to cold brisket was fatty and flavorless...no smoke ring, no crisp, no flavor...gummy and tasteless. My son had their mixture of with a split with pork, chicken, sausage, and mac and cheese. He asked for no slaw and extra mac and cheese instead. The kitchen person came out yelling over to the waitress "did anyone tell them it is just a spoonful so there is no "extra" for not getting it (with air quotes) for her emphasis...we are sitting up front and can hear and see it all. Rude service free of charge. The baked beans were average for canned baked beans microwaved, as we heard the microwave go off and then our food came out. The Mac and cheese was even rejected by our 3 year old granddaughter, so that should be alarming by itself. The potato salad was much like what is in the buckets from Sam's Club. So overall, disappointing would be an improvement. The team was lacklusting, the food would be more satisfying if we chewed on napkins and plates. The service rude at best. The pricing was overreaching. Save your tastebuds, save your money. If this is your last option, it is a good time to start fasting instead of punishing yourself.

I got a tray with a pulled pork sandwich, cowboy beans, and coleslaw. The pork was very flavorful with just enough smoke for my tastes, and it went well with the barbecue sauce it came with. It also had different varieties of beans that I appreciated. It was savory and filled me up. Lastly, the coleslaw was also good but nothing to write home about. My lunch left me satisfied without being stuffed, which is often an issue I have with barbecue. The only complaint I could see with this meal is portion sizes. While it was a comfortable serving size for myself, I could see others finding the amount of meat given too little for their money and stomachs.
