In the spring summer there is a nice porch with rocking chairs and during cold months they have a nice cozy fire going in the fireplace.

I went there yesterday with a group of friends, and it was a complete catastrophe. We literally…read moregot up and left after being there a few minutes. Why? Well, first of all. . .the place was ice cold. It was 30 degrees outside and they had no heat in there. Someone sitting in the corner asked if any of our group was an electrician. . .could they not afford to call one? Second, the place was so dark that I wondered if the lights were out. If not for the fact there was a TV in the corner (streaming music from YouTube) I'd think they were completely out of power (especially with no heat and someone commenting about needing an electrician). Third, they were out of about half the menu. I ordered an iced tea. . .whatever I got wasn't that. Maybe if they took a small amount of actual iced tea and diluted it in water until it just had a hint of tea in it, that's what I got. They were out of lemons for tea. . .then when I wanted a Reuben, I found out they were out of sauerkraut. The place doesn't exactly have a big menu, keeping everything stocked for menu items should not be that hard. (Oh, speaking of menus, the menus we were handed were very well-worn and the ink had started to fade and run from being wet) The lack of heat, very worn-out menus that clearly haven't been replaced in a long time, and problems keeping food in stock makes me wonder if they are in failing financial condition. As we weren't dressed to eat a place that was maybe 50 degrees inside, and were finding that a number of the things we wanted to order were out, we paid for our drinks and left. We won't be back. We don't encourage anyone to go there.

Their menu had plenty of selections with lots of "home cooked" meals. My waitress was friendly and took great care of us. My wife and I ordered something different so we could share and try a couple of things on the menu. Our food was delicious and reasonably priced. While we were eating the owner stopped by and visited with us making sure everything was good. They offer a discount for any current or past veterans, law enforcement or fire department members. I really enjoyed my visit and whenever I'm in the Louisa Kentucky area I will stop in again.

From the moment you walk through the doors on North Front Street, you're greeted with genuine Appalachian hospitality--warm, unpretentious, and welcoming in the best possible way. The food is classic comfort done right. Portions are generous, flavors are bold, and everything tastes like it was made with care rather than rushed out of a kitchen. The home-style cooking is the real star here--savory meats, perfectly cooked sides, and that unmistakable "down-home" flavor that keeps locals coming back and first-timers planning their return before they've even paid the bill. Nothing feels overworked or trendy--just honest, satisfying food that hits the spot every time. The wait staff and service at Billy Ray's is consistently friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The staff treats you like a regular, even if it's your first visit, and that personal touch elevates the entire dining experience. You never feel rushed, and questions about the menu are met with enthusiasm and helpful recommendations. The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable, making it ideal for families, friends, or a casual lunch stop while passing through town. It's clean, well-kept, and full of local character--exactly what you want in a small-town restaurant. If you're in Prestonsburg and want a meal that's filling, flavorful, and genuinely satisfying, Billy Ray's Restaurant is a must-visit. This is Eastern Kentucky dining at its finest--simple, hearty, and done with heart . Just a shame we couldn't fit in any of the delicious cakes! Next time! Thanks for a wonderful Diner experience.

The Magnolia House - Sunday dinner

The Magnolia House on Park is a hidden gem nestled by the river at the end of the street. The covered screened-in porch is set for multi-season use, with ceiling fans and multiple fireplaces. We were promptly greeted and chose a corner table (which was custom-built from 100-year old barn wood). The menu changes daily along with a selection of entree salads. We decided to dine "family style" and chose chicken and dumplings and meatloaf. Our sides included a house salad (I had the house-made orange zest dressing; my companion chose Thousand Island), green beans, mashed potatoes, and corn. These were served with rolls that literally melted in your mouth. Before the main course was served, we enjoyed some of the best fried green tomatoes we've ever eaten. The portions are generous, and they gladly boxed up our leftovers--and I look forward to having those tomorrow. Though we were thoroughly satisfied, we were unable to pass on dessert--all homemade. I had the lemon berry mascarpone cake, which was served with a side of fresh whipped cream. My friend had the pumpkin pie--which was the perfect taste of fall. We both had Magnolia Iced tea --garnished with lemon, orange, and a sprig of organic mint. Bottomless refills are available, and our attentive server kept our glasses filled. We had the distinct pleasure of meeting the proprietor/cook, her daughter (our server) and her mother. Magnolia House on Park is a labor of love--something that shines through in every bite. Before we left, we enjoyed some retail therapy in the boutique, which features items from local artisans and books from local authors. We can't wait for our next visit!
