    Kentucky scenery

Well where donI start. Billy Rays is an iconic landmark sort of place! It used to be a pool room and arcade with restaurant but now it's just the restaurant. You can still get the very very best in Kentucky cuisine! Some of their recipes are probably over one hundred years old i bet maybe more. So give Billy rays a try this Sunday after dinner! Y'all tell 'em legendary sent ya! Have a good day y'all!

Sirloin tips that did not appear to be sirloin and had a sour taste--a first for me! - A plate of grilled meat with sautéed onions and peppers, accompanied by corn, green beans, and a cornbread muffin on a wooden table.

This restaurant is a well-known local favorite and I have repeatedly made attempts to understand why. The food is not good; I have visited multiple times in an effort to "like" the restaurant, but after my last visit I am done. I do not recommend this place. I will never return; my meal was so bad that I don't even want to drive by this restaurant again! My meal: Sirloin tips that did not appear to be sirloin and had a sour taste--a first for me! The corn was bland (unsalted), tough, and so cool it didn't melt butter. The cornbread muffin was so hard that I only ate one bite; it was also cold and generally tasteless. The only edible items were the green beans (a bit stringy) and the green peppers. My son ordered a grilled cheese sandwich: it was okay, but I can make a better one and I'm a horrible chef! The Diet Coke was good and I liked the ice. Looking at the ceiling was a treat--love its design. The waitress came to our table once and smelled like an ashtray. That was unpleasant, but the biggest need for this establishment are chefs. The food is absolutely awful. It's entirely overpriced. If washing your hands in the bathroom, be careful: the faucet explodes water into the sink and will soak you. If I could go lower than a one-star, I would.

Fried Mushrooms - Fried mushrooms served in a checkered paper-lined basket, accompanied by a small bowl of horseradish sauce and a tall glass of iced Coca-Cola on a wooden table.

The only reason I gave this restaurant 3 stars is because of the customer service. Customer service was excellent. Otherwise it would have been a 2 star rating. I ordered sweet tea to drink, the fried mushroom appetizer, the seafood platter, and the tropical cake for dessert. Unfortunately, all of the fried food seemed like it was pre-breaded frozen fare. The fried mushrooms were decent. The only saving grace was that the food runner, not the server, went to the kitchen himself and made me some fresh-from-scratch creamy horseradish for the mushrooms. For me, this is a must for fried mushrooms! The seafood platter had 2 fish (unspecified) fillets, 5 fried shrimp, 2 fried scallops (yes, just 2), and 2 deviled crab. So, 4 fried proteins and 4 different frying styles. The fish fillets had a cornmeal crust, the shrimp were battered, the scallops had almost an overcooked panko-like breading, and the deviled crab was just plain fried. Most of it was bland. The only thing that really had any flavor was the deviled crab, which was flavorful but a bit on the salty side. The tropical cake was very dry and bland. So dry that I had to take sips of drink along the way. The icing was whipped and just felt like whipped grease in my mouth. The chunks of pineapple in the icing was the only thing that gave it any flavor. Not sweet at all. The restaurant had a decent atmosphere but you couldn't really hear the music that was playing except when entering or exiting. Overall a mediocre experience.

This was supposed to be herb crusted chicken. It had no herbs and was super bland.

Update, so I took my coworker here and told him he'd love it. It was a terrible experience. I ordered herb crusted chicken and got what I would look like Waffle House would give me. Price ended up be a little high in my opinion. But you never know if you don't try. Previous review- This place was great! Super old school but absolutely great. I plan to go back any time that I go to Prestonsburg. The prices are great too! Honestly this is probably the best place in Prestonsburg.

Food was just so-so for the price. Service is good. There's not a lot of places to go in Prestonsburg though.

On the first occasion, we were a group of 9 and we ordered appetizers (including the beer cheese with pretzel bots which was super tasty!!) salads and mains. Everyone really enjoyed their meals along with our amazing server. Food quality was very good, like elevated bar food/gastro pub cuisine, with nice touches, such as the goat cheese salad with fried rounds of creamy goat cheese on a generous bed of fresh greens, served with cranberries and slivered almonds and a creamy raspberry dressing. One thing I was a little disappointed with was the brusselsprouts salad. This was recommended by friends and touted as a 'house favorite'. But the brusselsprouts were not fresh, and were overcooked - likely they were canned or frozen then cooked with the bacon and blue cheese. The bacon and blue cheese helped the overall flavor, but as someone who LOVES both the flavor and texture of fresh brusselsprouts fried/ caramelized, I had expected something different. On the second occasion, we ordered lunch to go for 12 people, mostly salads plus desserts. We had been advised to order between 10 am and 11 am the day we wanted take out, which we did, but apparently, so did a bunch of other large groups....so our order which was to be picked up at 11:30 am wasn't ready til 12:40 pm. Even so, food did not disappoint, and everything was nicely seasoned, cooked well and fresh. A couple more things of note: -- Several people ordered the sweet potato fries at dinner and for lunch, and everyone raved at how special they were, especially with the sugary/buttery dipping sauce. I am a little sad I missed out on them! -- During dinner, we were too full for dessert but decided to get it with lunch; I had the chocolate lava cake which was totally decadent; others ordered the lemon berry cake and salted caramel cheesecake - everyone raved the desserts were fantastic! Overall, when dining in, the decor of this historic-house-turned-restaurant is eclectic and inviting. The bar atmosphere, friendly and well versed staff, and great menu beckon you back for future meals. Definitely a special spot in Prestonsburg! And don't forget to get dessert!

We visited the day before Thanksgiving and Wilma was busy filling pie orders. For $8-$9, you can get a whole home-made pie! You do have to give Wilma 24-hours notice to get one of her pies, but you can't make a pie that cheap!! We stopped in for breakfast and were the only people in the dining room. The restaurant is basically in a house so the "dining room" is a few tables spread around. Ours was right next to the kitchen and it's a regular home kitchen not a restaurant grade outfit. Most of the food is prepared in the basement and sent upstairs via a dumbwaiter. We got the Pork Tenderloin Breakfast Platter. Be sure to ask for the homemade strawberry freezer jam for your biscuit. It was a ton of food and was only $5.75! Wilma's isn't super fancy and but the food is reasonable priced and the place definitely has character so it's worth a stop.

We were passing through Paintsville - touring around Eastern KY soaking up local flare and flavor, avoiding chain restaurants for sure - when we cam to Wilma's for breakfast. It is small, small crowded, dated and perfect. We asked for menus instantly outing ourselves as strangers. Our waitress, Haley Jo, was the sweetest thing ever. We also outed ourselves as cityfolk when my dad asked for hot tea instead of coffee. Haley Jo offered to heat up some sweet tea they had made, she admitted she had never made hot tea before. We loved her. Anyway, on to the bacon. BEST EVER. done. The whole bill for four people full breakfasts and beverages (my dad had a rib eye & eggs meal!) was exactly $20. Wilma has been cooking for 50 years, and she is a pro. Loved it! After our breakfast we checked a couple antique shops in town, you won't meet nicer people. A note of caution, Wilma's is not the cleanest or most well organized place I have ever eaten, but be nice - remember where you are and what you came for. Cut Wilma some slack - she has been doing this for 50 years!
