We were in town and needed a bite to eat. We had heard mixed reviews from several of our friends that live in the area. The best thing about this place was the service it was fast, super friendly people. While the environment is laid back and welcoming, the Dairy Cheer is a hard place to review. As it has been a staple of food service in Prestonsburg for as long as the majority of the population remembers. While it does definitely have its good parts, but does have some consistency issues. Their onion rings are especially amazing!! My wife and I both had the Smash Burger and what was in the past the signature burger of Dairy Cheer with the Onion Rings. The burger was good. However the meat to bun ratio was a little too much for my liking and a little overcooked. The real issue we both had was the charred flavor on the onion rings and the overt amount of excess grease. Both these indicate that the oil in the fryer needs filtered and/or changed. Normally this wouldn't be too much of an issue but given previous meals we have had here with the best onion rings in the state it is almost a heresy for them to be done this way. It is a good place but small things like this from a place that once had such a high standard is disappointing. read more

This place is a joke. First of all, they don't smash any burgers here, burgers haven't smashed at this place in years, what you get is a crappy frozen puck of the lowest quality meat that's been unevenly, cooked on a flame grill and thrown in a tray, so when you finally get it, it's no longer hot. All the sides come out of freezer burnt bags. The staff is disinterested, the floor is covered with grime, and the restrooms are disgusting and outback in the alley. Struggling with the stars... This place was recommended to me as a local institution by my fiancé, but I'm hoping Prestonsburg has more to offer. The food was what I expected - no issues here. The two problems I have are that they don't accept electronic payment of any kind, and they fill the entire cup up with crushed ice. Not much soda at all. Then they actually charge you for a 3rd refill, even though they barely filled the first cup up 1/4 of the way with your soda. My coworker pointed it out to me, then not 30 seconds later I heard (what I assume to be) a local ask for easy ice as he placed his order over my shoulder. Pinching pennies here folks. read more

If I could give this 0 stars I would not hesitate. Home of the Smash Burger? More like Home of the Trash Burger. They haven't smashed a burger on that grill in years. Remember the cheeseburgers you would get at summer camp? This is what they sling at you here. Sides are all dumped in a fryer from a plastic bag. There isn't a single place to get a decent burger in Eastern KY, and this place is absolutely no exception. If I were dying in the desert and I was told my last meal was going to be from Dairy Cheer, I would happily eat a cactus and enjoy every bite. Ok if you're from a small town like I am you can truly appreciate this review! After a business trip, the director of my workplace suggested this place based on another person in leadership being from the town and highly reccommending. There were an overwhelming number of options on the menu, so I bet you wouldn't get bored with place. Staff were very friendly, genuine southern hospitality! Everything was excellent besides some of the workers. They didn't seem to be in a good mood, acted like they didn't even want to be there working. Just a handful of women. They seemed to be in a bad mood all around. We went as a group of 10 on Saturday which I know is a lot of people. Who seemed to be the manager helped us out tremendously. This is a longtime go to place in town for dairy bar experience. The best milkshake ever. They are known for the Smashburger. Food cooked perfectly. Homemade onion rings! Covered outside dining. Known for their crushed ice which adds to the fountain cokes and water. Not much to look at but food is worth it. Didn't try the desserts. They have hand dipped ice cream and soft serve. And they have the cheapest self car wash, probably in the country. Go in or drive thru or sit under the covered dining outside and they come take your order. Very good. read more

So we decided to stop at Dairy Cheer because of the huge green sign that said, "home of the smashburger." The restaurant looked older and out dated, but it was clean and did not smell like grease. The ladies taking our order were nice and polite and they did have scoop ice cream. This is what we ordered. A Smasharue, which is the burger but with a cheese and pepper sauce, a regular Smashburger, a bacon cheeseburger, French fries, onion rings, and a large Dr. Pepper. Total came out to $19.00. I thought, not bad for what we ordered, but let me tell you about our order. The burgers were flat. I know I said smashburger and I knew it would be, but the patty was not a "smashed" patty, but rather a thin hamburger patty. I had the one with the cheese sauce. When I bit in to it, I could not taste anything. No sauce, no burger, not even the tomato. My wife's bacon burger had the same patty and she could not taste anything, not even the bacon. My daughter had the regular burger with ketchup, so that's all she tasted. On the plus side, the fries were hot and crispy and the onion rings were the kind I like, café style. Now in my honest opinion, I thought that this meal was not worth the money. There were plenty of customers there so I must be missing something. I might give it another try someday. Although I did order a reeses milk shake, I was given peanut butter (which is the same thing honestly, so no complaints to be fair) the waddle fries and BLT was so good I had to take a nap in my car. Yeah it's technically fast food, but they have hand dipped ice cream, some great slaw dogs, and fried mushrooms. This is one of my guilty pleasures in Prestonsburg. I especially enjoy a peanut butter milkshake from here. The smashburger is a great burger, but I can't hardly eat here without getting the foot long chillidog with slaw, it's just that good. I waited 45 minutes for my food. They tell me someone else must of walked away with my order, although I was standing there waiting for my number to be called. It was never called. They obviously just forgot or something. They tell me it'll only take 5 minutes to make my food so I wait. 10 minutes later I FINALLY get my food. Sick to death of waiting on my food, I take my food and go home. Figuring that they just made my food, I assumed it be fresh. Nope. The hamburger patties were burnt and cold. The fries and cheese sticks were fine though. Those burgers were awful, however. I'm a regular at the Dairy Cheers in Pike Co, and the service is always excellent. The Food is really good at this restaurant this place is probably consider a must have if you travel to this area actually this used to be a regional chain of stores but i think a lot of them have shut down i usually order the double cheeseburgers and some fries the burgers are awesome they are cooked over a open flame in a grill you can actually see theme cooking them if you look close the fries you get a ton of them if you order a large fry your not going to get what you expect from a national chain there are a ton in the little bag the restaurant is very clean they got a jukebox the bathroom you have to walk outside and go though the back of the restaurant to get to it but the food is really good read more

I have been eating at Dairy Cheer for 40 years. First in Paintsville and now here. The food is cooked to order and is very good. The Smashburger and onion rings are my favorite. And I always finish it off with a hot fudge dake. read more

This is definitely the worst Dairy Cheer franchise there is. The one in Pikeville is miles better, and the one in Coal Run was too (before they tore it down). The service is not great and the food is even worse. I could make a better burger on my kitchen stove. read more
