An Oasis in the Arkansas Countryside I was in the Osceola area for business meetings and was tasked by one of my colleagues to cater a lunch for 10 people. I was directed to the Hog Pen as the closest place to get food for a group. I must have driven past the non-descript building a million times and never even noticed it. The Hog Pen is a local mecca for barbecue in the area. When I arrived, I was lucky to have just beaten the lunch rush and the kind staff helped me put together a lunch for twelve people. My order had pulled pork, dry-rubbed ribs, smoked chicken, baked beans, coleslaw, and peach cobbler. The staff also provided me with buns, cutlery, napkins, sauces and everything else needed for a catered lunch. The food was exceptional, as I have had Barbecue from all over the US and can make a qualified statement about the flavour and quality. The chicken and ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender and had an excellent smokiness. The rub was not overpowering and the flavour was mild with just a little touch of heat. The Pulling pork was soft and smoky and went well with the sauce provided by the Hog Pen team. In the end, there was not one scrap of food left as every morsel of food was eaten by the Big River Steel team whom I had brought the lunch for. I had tried a little of each of the items in the order and was pleasantly surprised. On my way back to my hotel, I stopped at the Hog Pen and bought a pulled pork sandwich for my drive.

Southern BBQ at its best. Nice setting just off Hwy 61. Jeff and his staff are top notch. I recommend the pork steak!

We had the smoked chicken dinner last night. It was juicy and flavorful. Great service, as always.

Pulled pork was ok, French fries were WAY underdone. Just basically a greasy French fry. Not even fully cooked. I will not go back.

Good BBQ at a fair price. Ribs were fall of the bone tender.

This is a decent, family-owned restaurant. Much of the food appears to be made from scratch. The owners are accommodating folks. The Mrs. will answer any questions posed to her. The Mr. is a bit of a character, and may give you some sarcasm and a bit of attitude. (If you realize that, then your visit should be fine. He means no harm.) Their food is served on "real" dishes made of ceramic (not plastic). However, iced tea, soda pop, and other cold drinks are served within hard, plastic cups. They have a full menu of food, but also offer daily specials. I've had the pleasure of enjoying two (2) of the lunch specials: 1) The country-fried steak is tasty, moist, and nicely breaded 2) Even more delicious is their chicken and dumplings with homemade cornbread! There are hearty chunks of meat swimming within this generous dish along with well-prepared dumplings. Be sure to watch for a piece or two of chicken bones, though. Homemade, indeed! The paved parking lot is more than adequate, given the size of the building. There's additional parking on crushed rocks, located in the back. Despite there being only about three customers during a weekday afternoon, the waitress was distracted by her phone, and didn't refill my drink until prompted by me. The restaurant is located across the street (north of) from the Family Dollar store. I recommend this eatery, and plan on returning again. (My pictures were posted by Yelp elsewhere, within the photos section of this business.)
