I love and have eaten a lot of fish & chips over the years, so I don't hand out reviews for this dish lightly. Whenever the craving hits, I've always headed to Lucky's in Rochester. They've been my number one for a long time. But after trying the fish and chips at The Hog & Hen, I think there's a new champion. The Hog & Hen uses 100% cod, and it's outstanding. The fish is snow white, incredibly flaky, unbelievably moist, and cooked to perfection. Then there's the beer batter..... light, crispy, and fried to a gorgeous golden brown. Every bite had that perfect crunch followed by tender, flavorful cod. One thing I also appreciated, the seasoning. So many restaurants serve fish and chips that leave you reaching for the salt shaker. Not here. As soon as the fish and fries came out of the fryer, they were seasoned just right. It's a small detail, but it makes a huge difference. My only knock and this is purely personal, is the fries. I'm just not a fan of fresh cut fries. I prefer a crispy steak fry or something with a little more crunch. That's simply my preference and certainly not a deal breaker. However, here's the bottom line, the cod is absolutely phenomenal. It's one of the best fish & chips I've had, and it has officially took over my number one spot. I'll definitely be back many more times for the fish & chips. Spent New Years Eve at The Hog and Hen for a three course dinner. They were quite busy when we arrived and we sat at the bar for a short wait until our table was ready. The restaurant felt cozy with a lit up Christmas tree in the entryway and wreaths hung along the walls. The menu was specialized for the evening with two options to choose from for each course. We both ordered the butternut squash risotto for the appetizer. Prime rib with mashed potatoes and maple glazed carrots for the main course. For dessert I went with the cake pops(pink champagne and double chocolate) and my husband chose the blood orange tart. As always the food was wonderful. The cut of prime rib was thick and not fatty. I was very impressed with the portion sizes. The au ju sauce elevated the flavor of our prime rib. The cake pops were the perfect end to my meal. Great flavor and texture. I was perfectly full by the end of our meal. Even though the dining room was quite crowded, we appreciated the noise level and that we had no trouble hearing each other speak. Our server Alex was attentive and helpful. He offered to have my prime rib grilled longer to be a bit more done which I really appreciated. We left happy with our choice to have our final meal of the year at The Hog and Hen, always a great experience! read more

What a gem! My husband had trout. He orders trout everywhere. Then stated it was the best he's ever had.! I had "greens & beans" it was so so good! Our friend had the burger. It was beautiful and he said it was great! Our other friend had a specialty spring salad with fresh peas and got cheese. Excellent! We also ordered a plank of bread for the table. We were looking for somewhere to eat in Palmyra and happened to walk by here and decided to pop in. So glad we did! I had the spring salad - very fresh, dressing was tasty but not overpowering, and the peas were a nice touch. I also got the Mac n cheese, which was delicious, and had what I think were homemade cheese-it's on top. The fried fava beans were excellent too. I went in a group of six and everyone else loved their dishes too - pork chops, hog and hen burger, greens and beans and schnitzel all got good reviews at our table. We were in town for a few days and went for lunch and had dinner twice there. The salads were fresh and delicious. The pork chops were thick, tender and tasty. The char was excellent. The Mac and cheese was creamy and delicious. The fries were fresh cut and fried perfectly. For dessert the maple crème brûlée and the apple crisp were to die for! Service was great. This place will definitely be on my list to come back to anytime I'm in town! The staff were friendly and accommodating to our food allergy. They felt like a family. The atmosphere feels so comfortable. We were commenting on how we felt like they could have squeezed more tables in but were so glad they didn't because we felt like there was plenty of space to get around and through the tables. And oh my gosh the food!! My pork nearly melted in my mouth. Everything was so fresh and the flavors in each dish were perfectly balanced. We had the best macaroni and cheese of our lives. And even my fiance, who traditionally does not like crème brule, was nearly licking the dessert plate clean! A rare find in upstate NY. Locally sourced ingredients prepared by a Master Chef; superb intertwining of flavors. Entree's were incredibly delicious with perfect balance of accoutrements and other embelishments. Highly recommended. Having previously worked and trained in 5 star restaurants, The Hog and Hen brought me back 40 years ago. I ordered coffee for dessert and received a full French Press, with egg timer and hot mug. Shut the front door! That's great service and wonderful presentation. Don't let this diamond slip by. Experience old fashioned sophistication combined with eclectic modernism. Truly great! read more
