I wanted my grandson to do more than just play on the phone so I remembered how many hours I enjoyed doing models as a kid. WOW, they were so helpful in showing different models. When my grandson liked WW2 planes the person (I don't want to say salesman since there was absolutely no pressure or upselling) explained the different types of planes. Also he recommended which ones for a beginner modeler based on size and number of parts. Very helpful. Plus I called for a question when he started painting. The question was answered right away without having to be transferred to another person. So very helpful in that store. I dropped a remote control car off 3 months ago, and they job out their repairs to someone who works on them. I have never received an update unless I sent a text. Each time I was told he was busy, and would get to it!! Today I received the same comment, regarding how busy he is. Would highly recommend not doing business here! Weak. I came in looking for some sanding tools and the guy behind the counter could not have been more disinterested. He even discouraged me, saying "well we only have sanding sheets", which was the answer to my question, "where are your sanding supplies?"... to which I then had to ask again, where are they? At about that time another guy appeared from 'round the corner and helped me. They had much more than the first, uninterested employee let on. Once I went to check out I went back to the uninterested employee, who had been behind the register. He rung me up then unceremoniously stepped back from the counter and went, "Okay, there you go.", leaving me to awkwardly reach forward and grab my jumble of items I'd just paid for. The prices were fairly high, and given the fact that I felt uncomfortable asking a simple question and then made to feel even more awkward actually purchasing something...yeah, I just don't think I'll be back. read more

I've come here quite a few times with the other half when he grabs stuff for his RC car. There are lots of crafts and things for kids and adults. Model planes, cars, RC, kids toys, coloring books basically anything that you would think to find at a hobby place is here. The hubs usually finds what he needs and the prices are right. I like coming to look around at all the stuff they have. I have not found the customer service to be super friendly but it is what it is. I'm sure we will be back soon and I'll find more things to buy that I don't need lol read more

I am so disappointed with my visit to Hobby Bench this morning. I was shopping for batteries for RC aircraft. The three members of staff working the counter were clueless. The young man helping me had no idea what the battery size, capacity or charging requirements were. He pointed out an incompatible charger for the lithium battery he was trying to sell me. This is so very dangerous as lithium batteries must be very carefully handled and watched after. When I called out his misinformed sales pitch I received an answer that it was another staff members mistake. I would strongly suggest shopping at Hobby Action or Duncan's where there are more knowledgeable staff and better selection. In summation, the staff knows just enough to be dangerous nothing more! read more

Nice store but everything is so dang expensive. I'm guessing this is more of a place for a serious hobbyist rather than an amateur (like me) wanting to try new things. The RC vehicles here that I saw were at least a few hundred dollars ($350 minimum it seemed.) Some basic train sets were no cheaper than $150. I actually came here looking for Thomas the Tank Engine stuff. I was excited when I saw they had a wall sign prominently displayed on the left side of the store (from the main entrance). I was disappointed to find no Thomas items whatsoever. Instead, the shelves had other items on them implying they have no intention of restocking Thomas merchandise. I figured maybe the Thomas stuff had been moved, but no. They just sold out, left the signage up, and made more space for Playmobil toys. Oh well, at least there's Amazon... read more

I am a firm believer of shopping local. We have tried with this business several times and noting but not helpful or supportive of their own merchandise. Most recent incident (and this wasn't the first) We just bought a new battery for a Traxxas. Got home. Charged it and it got really hot charging and doesn't work. Brought it right back with the receipt and box it came in. They will not exchange it and we must go through the manufacturer. I am done support this company. This is not the original Hobby bench, which is by Bookmans, but I find little to differentiate the two. A general service hobby shop, covering everything from model trains and RC to needlework and basic art supplies. So, you aren't going to find super specialized items, but you will find some of everything. If you need basic supplies - in my case paint, tools - this is the place. Like an old time hobby store - you never know what you may find lurking on the shelves here. So, fun place to browse. We don't have too many choices in hobby shops in Phoenix, but either Hobby Bench is worth a stop occasionally. read more

This was a tough rating to decide on, the place has plusses and minuses. On the great side, they have a HUGE selection, and it's pretty well organized so you don't feel crowded or too overwhelmed with clutter. They have so many things available. Prices are about average for retail hobby shops, which is reasonable. They have reasonable return policies. Employee help is hit and miss. Most of them are VERY helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable. There are a couple who don't seem to care, and I've had a couple give me completely bogus info. ("We don't have that." Um, it's right behind you...) Or some who really don't want to investigate some RC parts that may or may not fit, and the like. So if you don't get what you want, sometimes you have to ask a different person. They also insist on demanding ID for credit cards. This is a violation of the merchant agreement and stores are prohibited by Visa/MC from demanding ID. No matter how you feel about it, those are the rules and this store is wantonly violating them. I find this annoying. read more

Matt the manager needs to learn how to treat their customers better. Under no circumstance is it acceptable or professional to bad mouth your customers with comments that are 100% false. I've spent several thousand dollars at this location in the year and a half I've been going there that could have easily went to Duncan's or the Northern location and to say you only go there to talk and not buy anything is a downright lie. The cashier is always very friendly and the back counter guys in the RC dept are helpful but if thats how management sees their customers then they don't deserve my business. Go to Duncan's or the Northern location instead as you will get MUCH better customer service and don't make you feel like a jerk for coming in. read more

On more than one occasion they have quoted me one price over the phone, then when I arrive, they lie and say they didn't quote that price. The first time it happened I had recorded the call and played it back for the manager...after a LOT of talking they agreed to honor the price. Understand that I was not looking for a discount, they were trying to sell the product for more than retail! On Saturday June 1st, 2019 I called the store on Bell and the one on 19th avenue looking to buy a Traxxas RC car. The store on bell quoted $479.99, the one on 19th quoted $519.99...so I went to the one on Bell. When I showed up to the store the price was now $549.99. I let them know that I was quoted $479.99, and they didn't believe me. I offered to play the recorded call and he wanted nothing to do with it. I told him the other stores price and he didn't believe me...as usual. I called the other store and put them on speaker, and they quoted my $519.99. The employee went into a rant saying "someone is getting fired!", and he stormed off to call the owner, then the other store. I then asked if he would honor the price, and he said "no", I will sell it to you for full retail. He then called the other store to make sure they would raise the price before I could drive there. I immediately left. I posted on my RC forum asking for alternatives to Hobby Bench and let them know the situation. I found a good store in Tempe, and I was willing to drive the 35 min for good service. I paid full price for the car from the other store along with a bunch of extra parts. I left Hobby Bench without purchasing due to how I was treated, more than the price. Since then I have tried to get the owners info so that I can let them know what is happening, no one ever calls back or tries to make contact, apparently, they just don't care. I used to spend $2k per year at Hobby Bench, and that money is now going elsewhere, plus all of my racing buddies will no longer go there. Avoid this store if you expect honest service, you won't get it! read more

Not very friendly. I like to have a conversation when I ask a question--I was filled with a lot of fast talk for batteries. I ended up getting what I wanted, but sure didn't feel comfortable with the conversation. When I asked questions about a replacement body for my Raptor and son's Slash I was was very disappointed with the exchange. After he wrote up the ticket he said he'd could look up the bodies/fit if I wanted to wait. By that time I was convinced online research on my own is the best bet. Very disappointed. was informed my car was not a real RC car because it was bought off Amazon. they don't sell parts because my unit wasn't a "Real" RC car. the bandit on the shelf has the exact front wheel seats but ok. $300 for an RC car that goes slower than the one I got off Amazon. I purchased some Traxxas tires/rims after the employee told me that brand was just as good as trenchers. I went home mounted them and they were worse than my bald tires. No grip & slid everywhere. I went back to return them and they spring the all sales final speech on me. Not even an exchange. This is why Amazon is king. I try to buy local and help the store fronts out but after all the money me and friends have spent there I feel like that was BS. They are brand new not a spec of dirt on them and only got them because the guy said they were better. Bought a Traxxus erevo 2 from here after doing extensive research on what I wanted and price checking at other places. Went in and talked to the guys and they were knowledgeable and informative. Went home and slept on it and came back the next day to buy. That guy wasn't super helpful and kind of ignored me in the beginning. Understandable because how many women actually come in to drop almost $600 on an rc car and know what they are talking about? Once he realized I was serious he was much more helpful. Lady checking out could have been friendlier but all in all a good experience. A nice hobby shop with lots of selection and knowledgeable staff. Will definitely be back in for replacement parts and price comparisons since they are so well stocked. read more

Better places to go for scale plastic model supplies in the valley. I really enjoy building scale plastic models. The Hobby Bench has a reasonably decent selection of model kits, but that's about it. Their paint and other product select leaves a lot to be desired and their prices are on the high end. Their employees seem to only be concerned about RC: they tried to be helpful when I asked if they carried something specific, but they didn't really seem to know what I was talking about and led me on a wild goose chase through the store because they didn't have anything that would work for me. In short, it isn't a bad place, but there are way better places to go for scale plastic model supplies in the valley. read more

The Hobby Bench is a fantastic little hobby shop located in Glendale, AZ. I shop here exclusively for models, paints and accessories. Model wise they stock anything and everything. Although I go here for their vast selection of Gunpla, the cars, planes and military are not lacking at all. As far as paint goes they stock everything from basic Testor enamels to high end Tamiya acrylic model paints and all the clears, bases and thinners you could ever need. The accessories are just as assorted as well. You can find all the items you need to jump right into intricate and detailed model building. Pricing here is very competitive with online retailers and I've found many items cheaper than online. Not everything will be more affordable but the fact you're supporting a local business that offers reasonable prices should be more than enough reason to buy here. The customer service is fantastic as well and the employees are very knowledgeable about the items they sell. Feel free to ask about your specific hobby and you'll be pointed to the right person.
