We found a great old Western, settled back, and just relaxed. The location is excellent, with everything within easy walking distance. Enjoyed our time in the cabin and loved the soaking tub on the back patio, with the view of the river. We did hear quite a few trains go by throughout the night and morning. Was not a fan of the cabin above us (cabin 7 I think?). They had tons of kids running around and up and down the stairs making it hard for us to enjoy and relax. Lots of thuds and thumping and super inconsiderate to us below them. The neighbor right next to us had a dog with them that kept barking when we were using the soaking tub, so we didn't get to use it very long the evening we got there, but we were able to enjoy it early in the morning because the dog was quiet and did not continue to bark. Loved that there was a small record player in the cabin, but wish there was a bigger selection of records in the room and the lounge area. We did really like how close it was to all the breweries and restaurants. Would love to come back with friends next time!

Upon arrival, I was perplexed to find no one around - not a soul anywhere but I knew someone had to be there because the distinct smell of cat urine about knocked me over. There was loud music playing somewhere on property so I began searching - half feeling as if I was invading the privacy of the owner, the other half of me a bit annoyed at the initial experience. I eventually found the owner who indicated he was alone and explained his wife had passed a couple years ago. He went on to explain that she was the machine that kept the place tidy. I noticed the place was in dire need of attention, and thoughts of thanking the nice man and leaving where rushing through my head. I don't know if he sensed my uneasiness or it was the fact I was the *only* guest there, but he hooked me up with the master suite which was palatial. King bed, sitting area, separate room with a tv (that didn't work) and a couch; the tv in the main room didn't work either. The bathroom was huge. If the weather had cooperated, there would have been a view of Mt. Hood from the front windows. Everything looked great....on the surface. But if you looked a little closer, there was cat hair on every surface, including bedding - I had to turn the pillowcases inside out and pushed the duvet to the other side of the giant king bed. Insects in the carpet and bathroom tub. Breakfast....which is the second B in the B&B, was not prepared unless you cooked it yourself. This didn't bother me much, I'm not really a breakfast person. Besides sleeping with the light on and ensuring every door was locked (that would lock) I think of the 2 nights I spent here, I may have slept a total of 2 hours...and even then I had one eye open. Virgil was a pleasant man, but he needs help - the house is simply too much for him.

There is a small home where the pastor and his family live. Next to that is the primary meeting space with an upper level and basement. Flanking the meeting space are the lodging rooms. Outside of that are multiple hiking trails. It was very inviting and felt like home. The food was unique and themed, served family style, everyday to accommodate our group. When the kitchen could serve something local, they would, such as nettle tea. The rooms were fine. They are older but well maintained. In the shared room I was in, there was a decent amount of space with a balcony. The pillows are covered by a really hard, not breathable plastic. I would recommend bringing your own pillows. Overall I think it is a very reasonable place to stay for a getaway, retreats, and other activities of that nature. It is certainly very serene and promotes individual growth as well as providing an encompassing experience with nature.

The biggest downside - the horrible, crinkly-covered pillows. they cover them in some plastic or something? It's uncomfortable and noisy enough to make sleeping difficult so if you have room in your bag, bring your own pillow.

I arrived late, but proprietors Stephanie and Eric welcomed me into the coolest house I have seen in I-don't-know-how-long. All of the things I hope and imagine a bed and breakfast to offer - warmth, fireplace, coziness, quiet, fireplace - surrounded and soothed me. One morning, I asked for my usual breakfast, and Eric said that he thought he had a compote that I would like even better, but if I didn't like it, he'd gladly whip up the usual (note to self: must obtain dictionary with the word "compote"). So I was gently being pushed to explore boundaries, as the therapists say. And it was better than the breakfast I had wanted! Every detail has been labored over, and the result is a temple of replenishment. If you want to learn how to be the perfect host, learn at the feet of the masters here at the Doublegate Inn. Their rates are really reasonable, too, for some odd reason.

Our cottage was exceptionally clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully prepared. These folks know how to blend classic antiques with modern stylings- my wife and I really enjoyed checking out the decor! It was obvious that the owners put real intention and effort into caring for both the property and their guests. It's quaint lodging in a beautiful setting, as well as a memorable piece of Gorge history that's super worth preserving. Loved it!
