The interior is decorated in an updated farmhouse style, with a big bar, plenty of seating, and an outdoor patio. We came in during an off time (~3pm) and had a seat at the bar. We ordered two drinks- one a rum drink off the drink menu- and the second a moonshine/watermelon infusion that was made as the special that week. Both were fantastic! Went here the first time I visited Ellington and then again 4 months later twice in a week and every sing time my family and I have loved it. Great food, unique drinks, and excellent service! Went to celebrate a friend's birthday. It was a party of eight and it was one blunder after the next. Our waitress was great yet she had to front for this restaurant full of people who, obviously don't care about what there doing. Long waits between drinks and an appetizer of nachos that were a major disappointment. The chips seemed like Tostitos from Shop and Shop with melted cheese topped with lettuce cores not leaf. Chopped tomatoes and a large blob of sour cream. This looked like something my kid would serve at a beer party. I ordered a well done burger figured it was safe for that section took up most of the menu. It came out rare at best. I guess if you don't like the way the chef cooks it tough crap. We waited a long time for everything and it didn't seem that busy. This is sub par food at best that you pay to much for. read more

Friendly and welcoming atmosphere, especially during their trivia nights every Wednesday. I have been to a different trivia night at a local bar in the same town and The Hidden Still is where you want to be. The DJ for trivia is engaging and goes beyond just reading the questions (which anyone could do) and makes you feel like you're apart of a live game show. The Hidden Still has a good beer selection, especially if you enjoy IPA's. I have yet to be disappointed with any item off their menu. During spring/summer they have outdoor seating as well as a separate dinning space away from the bar for a more intimate setting with friends. Definitely should check them out! read more

We had to ask to order our drinks, ask to order food, and ask for our check. Pay more attention to the people with empty plates staring at you, guys! The food was okay. Could have been great, but small things set it back. The flavor of the wings were delicious, but the fact that they were overcooked made them slightly less appealing. The nachos had so much potential, as the pulled pork on top was fantastic, but stale, hard to chew through chips make for an unpleasant experience. Interesting place. I want to start by saying that nothing here was bad, but nothing was particularly exceptional either. It seemed so promising... The wings are different, seems like they start with a smoked wing, then sauce them afterward. OK, but not very traditional, and way overcooked. No veggies served with the Buffalo Wings. Celery is cheap, folks. A slight towards the dressing. Ranch dressing with blue cheese crumbles mixed in is not Blue Cheese dressing. Another knock is the time it takes the kitchen to prep food. This was our first time, and our order took just over an hour to come out. Granted, it was fairly busy, but if you can't handle the crowd, hire more/better kitchen staff. Things I liked: The place was not overly loud, in spite of it being packed. The tunes were kept at a reasonable volume. You could hear yourself think, and carry on a conversation with your date. The decor is nice. All in all, it was just... underwhelming. On paper it seems amazing, and for Ellington, it probably is. The menu looks great! The idea of a moonshine bar is fantastic! We had high hopes for this place since the menu looked good online but everything was underwhelming. Not bad per se, just meh. People must like it though because there was a line out the door when we arrived and when we left (Friday during happy hour). Or it just benefits from the lack of other viable options in the Ellington area. The soft pretzels were fresh and tasty and well baked but the beer cheese that came with them was closer to a soup and it didn't taste like cheese because there was a lot of maple syrup or something mixed in. The sweetness overpowered all of the other potential flavors. The fish tacos weren't offensive but they were the worst fish tacos I can remember ever eating. The corn tortillas were grilled or something that made them seem stiff and stale yet soggy at the same time from the excess pico de gallo juice. The fish itself was fine I guess. It wasn't breaded too thickly but it didn't have much flavor. The dish overall was somehow really bland despite all of the different ingredients (pico de gallo, some sort of aioli, guacamole, lime juice) that went into it. The potato skins were average. They aren't the same type you normally get where they are like little boats. These were maybe just pieces of a potato sliced into 4 chunks and then fried and topped. They weren't bad just average but the serving was a little small. Overall this place may still have more potential to be good. Maybe we just caught it on a bad night. It was busy and during happy hour but the servers were still friendly and attentive. The prices are reasonable and they have a passable beer and cocktail selection. read more

I fall for the okie doke with chicken wings EVERY TIME I order them out! My take-out garlic parm ones were DRY, some overcooked and not seasoned at all..not even the skin (I nibbled it to see if that was the point--I'm not a fan of chicken skin at all). Not flavor at all!! Not sure why don't these places season (just a lil sea salt and pepper) the chicken rather than sprinkle parm or whatever on top. #Disappointed Fried mac n cheese--very good. Yummy pub fare, according to what a saw. I went with a large party and there were salads, wings, burgers, etc on my table. My meal was a little bland, ( Shrimp and grits ) but that was because I asked them to hold the sausage. ( pescetarian ) The waitress did warn me that that sausage adds a lot of flavor, so I cannot really fault them. Perhaps they could have added some butter and/or spices to add flavor in substitution. I would have enjoyed the dinning experience it a little more if the restaurant had more atmosphere. The room was cold and boring. When we left I understood why. Normally I have a great experience here- the wait staff is normally really friendly and wings are good. Every once in a while it's blah- hence the three. For example- the last time we were here our waitress was amazing, made great suggestions and the wings were delicious! Tonight- I ordered the bourbon mule (which has bourbon and cranberry juice in it)- it came out clear and tasted like straight ginger beer. I let the waitress know and she said oh it's just a regular mule, she then brought it back and it was now pink and tasted slightly of whisky. The second drink definitely had no whisky in it. First time we went the there the bartender was very friendly, very tentative and knowledgeable. It was a pleasure to have her wait on my wife and I. Great beer selection and great moonshine. Today? The bartender was clearly over his head (and it was not that busy), the food ground into the floor by the kitchen door was clearly from the night before and no one cared to pick it up. And the flies? Come on people. The flies were insane. We didn't realize them until we ordered food but just glance up at the lights and you will immediately understand what we are saying. They are everywhere. Exposed trash barrels everywhere with food and leftover drinks dumped in them. Total insanitary turn off. Chicken wings? Greasy, tiny low grade. We liked this place but are reluctant to step foot in there again. It's too unsanitary to drink or eat there and I hope the owner addresses it. read more

I've been going in The Still for years and love it. They have good beers on tap and by the bottle/can, as well as awesome food. It's clean, it has atmosphere, good staff and really feels like a local neighborhood bar with personality. I especially love the poutine - the French Canadian fries and gravy with cheese curds combo, and am looking forward to eating some this week. read more

Went there for lunch on 1/7/16 on the recommendation of some locals. Very easy to get to. Great Atmosphere. Found that they had just redone the inside and it looked great. Everything looked clean. We go to The Hidden Still pretty much every Friday night. These days we miss it very much. So we called up and asked for takeout and my husband picked it up on his way home from work. Once he got it home it was still warm and ready to eat. More importantly it was delicious. The only thing missing was the vibe from the restaurant and everybody having a great time! but that's not going to keep us from ordering take out every Friday night until this is over! You might even do it on a Tuesday! The bar was a little quiet when we stopped in on a Sunday afternoon. We were able to get seats directly at the bar and were quickly asked our drink order. WC had a beer (not sure of the first one) and I had a moonshine cocktail. Elise, our bartender was able to suggest a great option for me to try the Onyx Moonshine without a lot of sugar - she muddled some oranges, poured the liquor and mixed with club soda. It was very tasty. We split wings (chipotle and buffalo-horseradish) and the stuffed mushrooms. The mushrooms very good; they were stuffed with bleu cheese and wrapped in bacon. The wings weren't the meatiest I have ever had but the buffalo-horseradish was amazing! I was liking the chipotle at first (had a good burn) but the seasoning lacked salt and after eating most of them (too hot for WC) I was not loving it. WC ordered another couple beers (Flying Jenny) and I stuck to my original order. I had the grilled chicken Caesar salad and WC had the fried mac & cheese which basically is a fried cheese omelet with noodles inside. Interesting concept - good drunk food, I would definitely go there again and try some other wing flavors and different big plate meals. Came here cause online they said they were Connecticut's Kings of wings. Now let me tell you my experience. First off, when my girlfriend and I first walked in the atmosphere seemed nice and friendly, outside dining was an option so we took that. The outside patio was pretty nice, considering the restaurant itself didn't have enough outside lighting. The host sat us on the outer section of the patio, and at first I thought it was nice gesture, giving us privacy and all. It wasn't until dark I realized that we were seated away from everyone, AWAY from the good lighting, the only lighting. I didn't even have to say anything and my girlfriend thought the same thing. For the food, it was probably the most disappointing part of the night. We ordered Boneless wings (maple bourbon), a beef burger and the Italiano. The wings came bone in first off. The maple bourbon tastes burnt to a crisp, and did I mention we ordered boneless? I ordered medium for my burger and it came out well done and it was clear that they don't use seasoning or very minimal so my beef patty was bland. My girlfriends italiano tasted like big chunks of garlic with every bite. Very sad that this all happened because it seemed like everyone else around us were having a good time. The drinks are strong so maybe that's why people were having a good time. I just certainly hope the executive chef was not working, and this was last Saturday night so you'd think the food would be a little better. Overall we only enjoyed our stay because the waitress was so nice. She made sure we were taken care of even with the obnoxious crowd next to us. She is also the reason why we didn't complain because I would have felt terrible. Pricy and just not worth it, save your money and find better quality food. read more
