Let me start out with a cliche I never write reviews. But I don't. I went in for some basic essential oils to help prevent lice in my kids in school. They instead showed me a custom in store blend for just that. Not only were they very patient with the 4 children I had with me alone, when one of my kids caused me to drop the bottle they cleaned it up and refilled it at no cost. That is customer service. I will see if the blend does the job. But would 100%visit the store alone just off the experience they showed us. Thank you herb bar! read more

I was looking for herbs or a tincture that would aid in helping my period come early so it wouldn't get in the way of my camping trip. The owner was really turned off by my request. She asked me why I wanted to do that. I felt like that was none of her business but I told her why. She suggested a tincture that was for "celebrating your period" instead. I thought this was rude and borderline insulting. Her morality/ opinion of what I should do with my body clearly invaded customer service and thus my experience. read more

This place is alright, it's a fun place to meander around on a boring afternoon and look at exotic hippie essential oils, crystals, herbs, etc. I came in recently to stock up on some essential oils, but I left with a lot of buyer's remorse. A caveat of this shop is that you are not allowed to try on the oils (I get it, they are expensive to make). However, this policy irritated me for two reasons: 1st-the amber I bought has a really funky underlying smell--sort of like play-doh. I have heard this smell can be attributed to a poor quality amber, but it may be my body chemistry/sense of smell. In either case, I spent $18 on a vial of amber that I cannot use. 2nd-the lady working behind the counter overheard my friend tell me that one of the oils smells really different in the vial than it does when worn and she yelled from behind the counter that we "definitely cannot try on the oils." As a person who has worked a lot of customer service jobs, I think it is really rude to accuse a customer of something they are not doing. Also, there are signs all over the front door stressing the need to maintain a quiet and serene atmosphere...which is not how I felt after being yelled at by the staff. I'll probably go back, some of the oils were really great! I adore the vetiver and valencia orange I bought. Their pre-mixed essential oil sprays are also great. read more

Such a cool space! The store itself is very cute, one of those places with so much product in every nook and cranny, you could spend hours just looking through it all. That being said, everything is well organized and well stocked. I've been a few times now and am always happy with my purchases and the service. This place is okay. The issue that I have with it is that I've found their herb section to be lacking and too expensive (in fact, I can say most things there are a bit too pricey). I can find twice the selection at a fraction of the price elsewhere, even online. The people there are nice, but the space is cramped and tiny and if it's busy, you can get very claustrophobic. But if you're downtown, and need some herbs, it's an okay place to go. Again, the staff is really nice and quite knowledgeable. read more

The lady at the counter was super attentive and willing to answer my questions and even had many for me to better assist me. She seemed genuinely concerned and offered referrals for my issues. Girlfriend and I were looking for a natural mosquito repellent and after looking online at what oils do that successfully she suggested that we check out The Herb Bar and see if they had any premade options. After trying to go on a Sunday (they are closed Sunday, man why did I not check Yelp?) we went back the following Saturday and they had exactly what we were looking for. We picked up a bottle of their Mosquit-O and another oil that insects apparently hate for about $13. The smell of rosemary is strong but it works really well. I have even put it on my Scottish Terrier when we go for walks and it works for him as well. I could make these at home for cheaper but it is nice to support local business and not have to do any additional work. I will come back again. read more

This is a charming little Austin gem! I love the selection, as well as the care they take of the actually store itself. They regularly cleanse and ground the environment, enhancing the vibes. The staff can be hit or miss, I can resonate with the slightly almost pompous acting employees at times, who seem to grow weary of answering questions. I love this spot for remedies or teas to heal myself with. They have an amazing poison ivy remedy that works like magic. I've had poison Ivy several times and this is cheaper than going to the doctor and getting steroids. I've had to go to the doctor in the past but now I just go here before it gets real bad. I mean go to the doctor if your real bad but if it just started go here and talk the the knowledgeable staff that would love to help you. They have great gifts to give to the woman in your life as well or men. read more

The Herb Bar is one of my "peaceful spots" in Austin. I've never come out of this store feeling anything but refreshed and genuinely joyful--the vibes are that amazing! They almost always have what I'm looking for, and the customer service is out of this world. If you want information or just to chat, they are more than happy to oblige. I've bought everything from incense to teething tablets here. Something keeps me from rating it five stars, but I'm not sure what. Maybe I wish the store was just a tad bigger with a little more selection....but that's probably just the American consumer in me talking! read more

This is a wonderful place to find all sorts of holistic odds and ends! I went in searching for a salve for my son (he is fiercely allergic to bug bites) and they knew just what to recommend. I came here this evening about 15 minutes before the shop closed...knowing that can be irritating for employees, I was genuinely overjoyed at how attentive the staff were. Jenny assisted me, and after letting her know about some facial skincare needs, she immediately recommended several products. What perhaps most impressed me was Jenny's graciousness and willingness to describe various products at various price levels - and she did NOT try and up-sell me or show me things that were unreasonable for my budget. As a shopper that's perhaps at the younger end of the age spectrum (early 20's), it meant a lot to me that my budget seemed to be respected and considered in her recommendations. Also - now that I've come home and tried the various products, I can say that my skin feels amazing! As a new Austin-ite I found myself suffering from my first experience of Cedar Fever. HORRIBLE allergies that I've never experienced before. Seeing as I don't like to go to medications as my first stop for anything health related I started doing my research. Many people online recommended The Herb Bar's allergy sprays and said they were a miracle worker for these allergies. Holy cow they work! This place is amazing! The sales staff was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable about their products. The sales woman took her time explaining each of the essential oils I was interested in to me and really tried to figure out which would be best for my condition. She even recommended other products she personally uses that were honestly the best purchases I made. She gave me great suggestions about products without making me feel like she was trying to upsale merchandise to me. She also walked me through how to use each product and gave me instructions on how to assemble and use them at home. A funky place. Some of the staff are a bit odd, but they are benign and overall friendly. They do want things quiet - no cell phones. I was in there with my friend and her 2 year old. He was playing with her cell phone and kept turing up the volume despite me turning it down. I didn't even know a 2 year old could figure that out. I was totally fine with the employee approaching us a few times to ask, politely, to turn the phone down, but my friend was a little offended. I bought some sort of tea for people with allergies. The flavor is great and I really think it works. The staff is very knowledgeable, and what they don't know, they know where to look up. I didn't give a thorough look through the store because of the noisy kid in tow, but it looked like they had a wide variety of things other than herbs including tea pots and accessories. read more

I love to come here are visit with the herbs and essential oils. Beautiful aromas. The staff really know about herbs and have found them to be quite helpful and informative about what remedies I am needing at any given time. The space itself is small but incredibly tranquil. It's amazing how many healing herbs they carry in such a small space. I love getting the bulk herbs for healing teas. They also carry some nice crystal, tarot decks. Plus, they have very informative classes every Saturday from 10am to 12pm. read more

Herb Bar, I have given you so many chances. Purchased healing stones, pendulums, and herbs from you. But one of your staff members consistently follows me around your store as if I am going to steal, throwing furtive glances. Every single time that I come in. Just me. Perhaps it is because I am a biracial female that likes to peruse the entire store, and my olive skin screams "thief" to this woman. It irritates me to walk into a new age store in 2015, with signs which suggest that stealing brings on bad karma, only to find that my skin color inhibits me from shopping there. Since moving "North Of The River" (after 20 years of living just down the street from The Herb Bar), I had sort of forgotten about this amazing local gem! I have always loved stoping in from time to time to browse for gifts from their eclectic assortment of Spiritual and Healing items and the peacefulness and serenity of their lovely space. I was recently diagnosed with Chronic Migraines and was having an awful time trying to adjust to the preventative pharmaceutical drug my Doctor had prescribed for me. A dear friend recommended CBD oil as a natural alternative and sent me to The Herb Bar to check it out. I was so fortunate to walk in and immediately be helped by Dani, who was very familiar with Migraines and super knowledgeable and helpful in explaining CBDs and recommending them and other herbal formulas to help repair and strengthen my brain function and immune health. She also kindly informed me that it is The Herb Bar's 30th Anniversary this month, and invited me to participate in a raffle to benefit The Capitol Area Food Bank at a monetary level which resulted in my being able to pick a "Thank You"gift, (which ended up being the CBD oil I had come to purchase, but at a fabulous discount)! This store has great service! So welcoming and inviting. Great selection of human and pet products too. It is a bit pricey and they don't have sales so it is easy to spend a lot quickly in the store. The selection of herbs is great and what they don't have Garden of the Ancient in North Atx will have. The one thing I did not like about Herb bar is some of their herbs have more stems and sticks than the actual leaf (where all the good stuff is packed). I've gotten passion flower from them at two different times and a couple weeks apart and the first batch was poor it was brown tons of stems. The second batch was great, less stems and green. The herbs aren't too pricey maybe the cheapest thing in the store, so to lose product wasn't so bad for me I racked it up to frivolous spending. Overall I shop there a lot but I am chosey on the dry herbs I get. The oils are expensive but they are good quality. I can't say honestly is it worth the price you just either buy it or don't buy it. I buy oils from various sources and they are one of my sources. This is a great gift store for your holistic friends. read more
