They also sell seasoning packets for like a pot roast or dip and it tells you what you need to buy from the grocery store to make it which is a fun and easy way to try the new spices. I've been looking for a spice shop since moving from Houston and I will look no more. This place is very well organized and the staff was friendly but not pushy. Everything is sectioned off for baking, salts and peppers, garlic and onions, dips and dressings and even worldly spices. I actually got a few seasoning bottles as a Christmas gift, and I've been meaning to come in myself and see the store. The parking is awful. It's a little bit of a maze circling around, not to mention, the parking spots are tight. I have a small Honda, and even I find the spots too tight. Anyway, once you find a spot, thankfully everything is walking distance. I was greeted immediately by a young women. As I walked around the store, you can see that they really take care of their product. Shelves are neat and clean and organized, not jam packed with products. It's just very nice and pleasant. There is so much to see and so much product. I got a little overwhelmed. I had no plan to buy anything as I still have a lot at home, but just wanted to see if anything struck me. I did decide on pomegranate molasses. I remember a recipe calling for it, and so I thought this was a sign to get it and make the recipe. My check out was easy, and quick, and again the same young women was very pleasant. Easily my favorite spice shop in Austin. Also the second-best smelling shop I've ever been in! (#1 goes to Anderson's Coffee Roasters on Kerbey Lane.) Here, there's an exciting cordite-like tingle of cumin that hangs in the air. The Savory Spice Shop has one of the most flexible layouts of products I've seen in a while. Many are grouped by function or flavor profile - for example, there's a section dedicating to BBQ rubs, while another revolves around exotic salts. I'm very impressed by the service and the number of items one can sample. While not inexpensive, it's fantastic that they sell different amounts at high and low price points. They also have a great selection of pre-mixed spice mixes, all of which smell fresh and pungent! The two standouts I recommend are the Whiskey Barrel Smoked Pepper - it supercharges a burger or any steak - and the Shallot-Infused Sea Salt. This shop is super cool. So glad I drove by and noticed it. At first I thought that they may also sell food items to go but it is only spices and packaged goods. You can smell the spices when you get about 5 feet from the entrance. I've been in a couple of times now to pick up some new items for the spice shelf and I've been completely satisfied with the blends I've used so far. Needed some good spices for my coffee and beef stew so I decided to check out a spice shop in the Arbor area of north Austin. I checked on yelp and found Savory Spice Shop.As I entered the shop manager guided me through spice galore and so many to choose from. I love this cute place and so homemade felt like Grandma's home. You also can try the spices by sprinkling some into your hand and actually taste it. The staff is very helpful and will let you know which spice you seek is located. Parking can be a challenge but overall all you can find a spot to park. Lots of Turmeric spices which is my favorite so the tasting procedure doesn't you cost anything which I was delighted. I love this place - I went to them first in Denver and didn't realize that there was a shop close by my house. I ordered a bunch of spices online also, which I liked because I got smaller sizes and a sampling of more items. I liked going into the store to see everything laid out and they had some sale items. It's nice to have a place like this since I am cooking so much more to branch out and try different things. The newest thing I have been using is the Georgia peach spice which is nice on meat and sweet potatoes. They also have a capital hill seasoning and Asian sprinkle that I like. The chicken fried steak seasoning also got rave reviews from the hubby. They also have every type of curry under the sun. Let me start by saying that the staff at 5is location have always been welcoming and wonderful, although sometimes a little over anxious in wanting to show us their newest items. We usually come in for specific purchases that we have already identified. I have loved Savory Spice since they first opened in Austin, and had shopped at all three locations prior to the W 6th Street and Barton Creek Mall locations closed. The one at the Arboretum has always been the best in town, and most convenient to us anyway. I'm glad they are still open. What I have not liked are several of the changes in their business model over the last several years. They originally carried a huge variety of individual spices and dried herbs, with a few in-house blends, virtually all in Rage jars for staff to measure out into individual small ziplock bags or glass bottles. Now they are carrying an increasing number of "proprietary spice blends" (obviously intended for customers who don't have their own recipes or who have a lack of imagination to know what spices and herbs to use together when cooking). They have started carrying an increasing number of teas (as if there weren't enough good loose tea sources in Austin already), and more things like preserves and jarred sauces). At the same time, they have reduced the amount of stand-alone spices and herbs that are regularly stocked, and discontinued some specific items. While they are still a large number of products with "tasteful jars available, most items come prepackaged in a couple of sizes, and in combo paper/plastic ziplock bags. This is all disappointing. I don't want the pre-made new boutique"special blends". I would like he return of some of the ones that have been discontinued (where the heck is the extra spicy standard curry powder they used to carry?:Thenstaff answer when I asked shouldn't have been "oh, just add a couple of teaspoons of cayenne to the regular, that all we ever did.") (where the heck are the Tasmanian Pepper Berries and the Long Pepper?) (Where the heck is the Espelete?) I understand that the new paper and plastic pre-packed zip locks are the same spices and likely just as fresh, but the personalized service of selecting my single spices, pulling the large jars, and having the staff weigh out and pack my purchases was half the enjoyment of the shopping experience. I want to enjoy that kind of personal service at the price point that a shop as specialized as Savory Spice is located. (And, yes, I realize that their prices are only "slightly" higher than the prepackaged spices in a regular grocery, and that they are considerably fresher, I still want the more personalized service for what I am payable). Will we keep shopping at Savory Spice? Of course, it's the only and best game in town for what they carry? As their stock of non-blended ingredients declines in favor of proprietary blends and "spice kits" we may shop there less (Honestly, there are fewer items we purchase from them now due to the change in stock, and it's almost easier to mail order from them if everything is already pre packed anyway since that one on one customer service has become less a part of the in store experience). Never then less I find the changes I have mentioned above very disappointing. They are really the only game around, because I have never like Penzy's, and would have to mail order anything I wanted from them. I guess I'm stuck. This place is a crack house for Cooks. Seriously this site is addicting. The fragants of the spices tickles your nose upon walking in. Your eyes glaze over shelves ladened with glasses of spices. It is well organized with sections devoted to particular types of spice: shelves of chilis, another exclusively to curries, dried mushrooms, vanilla, even a shelf for exotic spices, and many more. This is how they operate. Walk around the shop and if you see something you like, take small spice jar marked sample and sprinkle a dab in your palm. At this point taste it and the leftovers in your hand, wipe onto the floor. No kidding, they told me to dust the extra on the floor as they clean it hourly. They do have a basin to wash your hands when you are done. Or you can use the alternative method; just keep licking your hands. If you are interested in purchasing any of them, tell the staff and they will fill you a container in any of their eight sizes. My strategy of just going to "Window Shop" was seriously compromised. It started with the Mayan Cocoa, who can pass up the original chocolate. My second lapse was with the Madagascar Vanilla extract, oh so heavenly. My eyes spotted a bag of mixed peppercorns: Black, White, Green, and Pink. Who can resist freshly ground pepper? My pleasant surprise was the Honey powder. This sweet, little treasure blew my mind. Use it in cakes, pies, breads, over cereal, in coffee or tea. I am now a honey powder fanatic. The staff is so helpful and knowledgable and friendly. After so many years of bying my spices online and WAITING to get them, I have a place to get instant gratification. There is a sampling container for every spice. You are encouraged to smell, taste, and toss the spice on the ground. They also recipe cards for some of the spices and foods to sample in the store. This is a one stop spice shop for all your global cuisine needs. You can get many of the spices cheaper at the ethnic stores, however, there is a price for convenience. Several weeks ago while looking online to find some smoked Spanish paprika I discovered the Savory Spice Shop. I was excited to learn they had a location in Austin 10 minutes from my home. This past Friday I went to check it out. The staff is extremely knowledgeable on all of the spices, rubs, and sugar mixtures they sell. One of the coolest things is they have samplers in front of most of their prepackaged spices so you can smell and taste what the spice is like. They also sell quite a few prepackaged bottles and jars of spice mixtures that you can add ingredients to to make dips, marinades, and dressings. My wallet was $65 lighter when I left but I will say their prices are not any higher than the quality brands of premium spices I buy at HEB. The cool thing is where you can only buy one type of smoked paprika at HEB, you can buy several types of smoked paprika here in addition to another five or six types of paprika that aren't smoked. The same thing is true for salt and pepper. If you are a connoisseur of spices I highly recommend a trip to this awesome store. read more

I heard about this place from a friend and decided to give it a try. I fell in love! The place has almost any spice you're looking for along with plenty of new things to try. The employees are super friendly. They'll walk you through the store and offer suggestions for the best ways to use the spices. You are able to try out mostly all of the spices in the store, which I loved. The only critique I have is that it the tasting didn't seem very sanitary. I would recommend putting in sanitary wipes or a small container to pour the seasoning in rather than using your hands. I originally came to the store, determined not to buy anything, but of course, that didn't happen. I bought Himalayan Black Salt, Onion & Garlic Table Seasoning, and Everything Bagel Seasoning. They are delicious. I've been really into Himalayan Pink Salt and was excited to try out the black kind. A little of it goes a long way. I used it to season Thai Chicken that I made, and it was a great addition. I have yet to use the Onion & Garlic Table Seasoning, but thought it tasted great when I was in the store. One of the employees recommended the Everything Bagel Seasoning. She mentioned how it tastes great on, well......everything. I used it on roasted broccoli and it was a perfect addition to not making the seasoning so blan. All in all, I will be returning to try out some of the seasonings used for baking. My Dad discovered this place in a neighborhood newsletter. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was impressed with what I found! Dad and I are both food junkies and especially love trying new things. At Savory, we discovered not only quality spices, but fair prices and an amazing selection. I purchased some beautiful deep red Hungarian paprika for a friend. She was pleased with the quality saying it was the closest she has found in the States to what she grew up with in Hungary! I also purchased some smoked Spanish paprika. I made a divine pork paprikash with it that would knock your socks off! The friendly staff explained to me they order all their spices in small batches every couple of weeks to make sure everything is fresh. Who knows how long that stuff has been sitting on the HEB/Walmart/Randalls shelves? Unlike chain stores, Savory has tester samples to try, so you know EXACTLY what you're buying. They offer $1 off any spice refill, if you bring the original bottle back to the store for reuse. The holiday's are quickly approaching. Savory offers some elegant box sets of various spices and/or salts - at affordable prices. They would make perfect gifts for food-lovin' friends and family. A couple of years ago my mom gave me a Groupon to the Savory Spice Shop on 6th. As soon as I left I had a "where have you been all of my life" moment. I love spice shopping... where else can you spend $10 and come home excited with possibilities? However, that location is not convenient to me. I was very happy when I learned about the opening of a second location. Parking is easier at this location. It seems to be a bit less rushed in here. The store is roomier. Customer service is always fantastic- cheerful and helpful. My favorites that I keep restocking are the truffle salt, mayan onyx cocoa powder, dutch cocoa powder, chili powder, dill dip, and ground mustard. You can definitely find rare spices here and sometimes in many varieties. I do wish they stocked cacao nibs though. The prices are incredibly reasonable and you get discounts on refills on the large containers. During Spring, they usually have a sale where you bring in an old spice container and get a dollar off a new spice. Their classes are varied and reasonably priced- such as tamale making and macaroons. I am always looking for the most interesting spice they have in store and then trying to find a use for it. My favorite has been the dill dip mix. It's very potent so just a little bit is great for an egg salad or a chicken or kielbasa soup. The honey powder is unusual and I use that to intensify blue cheese dressing. I like the romano powder on popcorn. The truffle salt gets a bit of abuse at my house- fries, mashed potatoes, roast chicken, mushroom risotto, macaroni and cheese. read more

I've walked into a few of these types of places in different cities and never really felt compelled to buy anything. Yesterday was a completely different story!! I'm trying to think about what was different about this place. The layout was easy to maneuver, the lady who worked there was super friendly, helpful and encouraging. I like the fact that you can taste the spices. It was casual enough that she told me if I had mistakenly taken too much spice to taste to just throw it on the ground. In my head: " Do what now!? ..my momma would slap me if I did that in the house" Great selection of salts including my favorite truffle salt! Mmmm..I could sniff that jar all day long. Literally makes my eyes roll back in my head. Fun stuff like Honey powder, lavender sugar, and lemon/lime/orange zest dried. They had dried ghost chilies! Cheese powders! Fancy dried herbs! Curries! The best part of it all is that you can tell instantly that these are all very fresh. The gift sets were freaking awesome! Some were pre-packaged but you can make your own. You can buy as much or as little as you like. Which is good for me because I get spice A.D.D. Having grown up in the Middle East (no, not Cleveland) where we had spice shops that were already old when Napoleon marched into Egypt, I was always tantalized by the colors, smells and the characters who owned these little islands of exotica in a sea of colliding cultures. It was amazing to go into a store where my great-great-grandmother bought her spices and pretty much nothing had changed. I got the same feeling coming into Savory Spice Shop at the Arboretum. I was on my way to Restoration Hardware and noticed the shop and had to go in. The smells were wonderful and evocative of my childhood experience which is pretty much gone due to a civil war and "urban renewal". The variety of spices was excellent - including some great Lebanese standbys like za'atar and sumac - along with other favorites like Smoked Spanish paprika's (if they could ever get their hands on Choriascuro I would like die...just curl up like a cinnamon bark and die with a smile on my face). A new fave is their Black Dust Coffee & Spice rub which I used on Short Ribs with great results. They have a nice gift selection of pre-combined spice rubs that are fun and reasonable priced. Love this place! TONS of spices (including lots of great combination spices) and very knowledgeable staff to help you pick them out. Tired of buying a whole jar of a spice just to see if you like it? No problem! You can buy as little as a 1/2 ounce to try them out, usually for about $1.50 or less, and that half ounce goes a long way! They put stickers on the baggies telling you what that particular spice is good with (fish, chicken, veggies, etc.) so you can easily know what to do with them even if you're not a cook. It is so fun going to this place and Con Olio next door. Get yourself some great olive oil and some spices and you're set! I walked out of here with 5 different spice baggies to try to keep my chicken and veggies interesting and it was right around $10 and I have really enjoyed trying them out! They also have a lot of pure spices in addition to the combinations. They have about 5 different cinnamons alone! They also have a lot of dehydrated/freeze dried things, like garlic and onions (sliced, diced, finely chopped, you name it!). Really a fun and cool store. read more

This is another little shop I ran across on Saturday. If you love to cook this is the place to go. The spices are a little over whelming when you first enter the shop. But I soon adjusted to that. I was in this shop for a long time looking and tasting spices. The staff was super helpful. The one part I really liked was I could buy spices in 1/2oz bags. This is great for me so I can try a spice and see if I like it and come back for more in a larger size. The other good part is I am on a low salt diet and they have a large selection of salt free spices. I have tired a few of the spices I have bought and am looking forward to using the others. My favorite place in Austin and the first place I would ever describe as something that deserves 6 stars. It has done things that I would have thought impossible: * Saved a ton of money - as someone who was eating out way too much, learning to cook has been a slow process. Thanks to the various different spices, this place ended up saving me a *huge* amount of money by helping me eat at home more and make my rice taste like something other than carboard. * Made me more appealing to women - I take dates here to test out the different spices, then next door to test out the olive oil. This has been a solid date spot again and again. * Converted lead into gold - just kidding Suggestions: * The ghost pepper curry is as close to a magic powder as I've found. * The roasted garlic can substitute reasonably well for parmigiana. * The roasted onion improves basically everything I put it on from soups, salsas, pasta, bread, etc. * Try the chocolate ghost pepper and brace yourself :) * Don't get too attached to curries. There are some great ones here but I ended up leaning on that category way too hard and now I have a lot of similar tasting powders. Prices: surprisingly low, especially since this is ostensibly a specialty shop. Service: Excellent. A lot of suggestions have paid off very well. Wishlist: * More certified organic spices - something that's becoming more and more common. * More fresh spices that you can smash up and add to things. It's been awhile since I've been back in Austin (about five years now) so it was quite surprising to find this new venue in town. This past weekend I was back in the good 'ol Hill Country for SXSW (as most of the techy US population is as well). My colleagues found the Savory Spice Shop online and suggested that we purchase a host gift from this place. The store is really cute and there are a multitudes of spices, rubs and things you can sprinkle with olive oil for a dip. And the people there were super friendly and super helpful! We talked back and forth about what I wanted to get, and I ended up walking out very happy with a surf and turf package of rubs. Best of all, you can get a refill for a discount as long as you tell them you have a bottle. Nice! If I'm ever back in town again soon, I want to pick up some for myself next time. So awesome! I stumbled across this business on Yelp while looking for nail places in this area, actually... Decided I had to stop by with all the glowing reviews here on Yelp and since I'm wanting to get more into cooking (baking is mah thing, yo). Everything I read was true! The store smells delicious. You're allowed to try a sample of anything and what you don't eat just toss on the floor, which is amazingly clean. They offer a wide variety of measurements to buy spices in. And they have EV-ERY-THING. I was finally able to find pure citric acid here (um.. I really like sour things.... a lot). I also got a bit of honey powder, which will be wonderful for baking, since regular honey will mess up the consistency of a lot of things. And as a splurge, got some cocoa for hot chocolate. I found the prices to be extremely reasonable and it was super convenient that I could buy only as much as I wanted and not be forced to buy a whole jar. The woman who helped me was super sweet and very helpful and friendly. I immediately bought a gift card for my boyfriend on the spot, so he can stock up his indian cooking spices... and because he's the cook in this relationship. I also really like supporting local businesses, especially ones owned by awesome people who seem to really care about their business. That's definitely the impression I get here. They had newspaper clippings at the register about how the owners had visited France to discuss some controversy of a certain French herb with local spice .. farmers? there. Extreme! Will definitely be running by here for any future spice needs. Apparently their original location is downtown just fyi. read more
