I was surprised by how wide the aisles are, considering the fact that they could've squeezed another aisle into the retail space. Still a great place to get supplements. Located now in the Triangle shopping center. The store is allot larger than when it was in Guadalupe. They also have a section of fresh fruits and vegetables. If you're looking for probiotic drinks, kombucha, adaptogen based drinks they have a varied selection as well. They also sell dry, canned, and boxed goods. You can join their rewards program and get certain supplements on special as well. Prices are pretty fair for being able to find them in store than waiting for them online. read more

There's not too broad of a variety for grocery shopping and foods, but you can find basics of whatever in organic and locally produced brands! This was my second visit to natural grocers and I love that they have bulk items such as hemp seeds and nuts wholesale prices. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about their inventory and I was asked about 3/4 times by different store associates if I needed anything which was super helpful. If you sign up for their rewards program you get $2 off your purchase and then get points for purchases which can be redeemed once you accumulate a certain amount. They also sell reusable bags (.99-1.99) which I bought one for use to bag the groceries and use for other items later as well. Will def be going back each time I'm in atx! read more

Except for the occasional sale, they're generally very expensive. Their produce is surprisingly expensive even compared to whole foods and wheatville. Natural Grocers is now my favorite natural foods store in town. I have a really limited diet in some ways due to allergies and also can't handle sugar and they have many great products for me. Their gluten free selection is terrific and priced better than anyone in town. They have stevia sweetend sodas, malt sweetened chocolate and so forth. There are often good sales and they also have a markdown shelf that I"ve gotten some total steals from! Even though it's a chain, it doesn't feel like one. NG reminds me of the hardcore health food stores from the 70s and 80s that actually carried healthy products, not just the trendy stuff marketed as "natural foods" that so many other places carry. They are cheaper, less crowded and friendlier than other natural foods markets in town. read more

UPDATE: They have NEW hours. They used to not open until 9:00 -- but now they open at 8:00 a.m. I think it is Monday-Friday or Monday-Saturday that they close at 8:04 (or was it 8:06?). Here's the thing: A lot of us are busy people with too much stress and not enough time or money, but we want to eat healthily at LEAST when we are doing our own home food preparation or cooking. But who wants to mess with all the damn labels that have been making an art form out of telling us things are not what they are or are what they are not and all for the almighty dollar and with NO consideration for the person who is going to EAT the stuff. Enter Natural Grocers. They do the label-reading FOR me! I already know before I walk into that store that they are not going to sell me ANYTHING that their picky board of decision-makers has not deemed wholesome, healthy or -- at the very least -- safe. What a service!!! Yes, I can go to Wheatsville 8 blocks south of Natural Grocers and find an even larger store (though not by all that much) that has a more Austin feel and ambiance to the decor and some of the employees (though it's been losing some of its Austin flavor over the past five years of record sales - and whether the two phenomena are related, I really don't know). And I love Wheatsville. I do. And I love Whole Foods Market too. Shoot, I even love Central Market. I just love Natural Grocers more. I love them for refusing to sell fringe not-so-good-for-me items that Wheats, Whole Foods and definitely Central Market do sell. I have to keep my analytical and temptation guard up at all the other stores. At Natural Grocers, I can relax a bit and let them show me what they truly believe to be healthy foods. (Not that I agree with all their choices, but I see that they err on the side of generosity of selection over too-strict dietary rules such as veganism, etc.) I have been a mostly vegetarian person for most of the past 40 years, but I do believe that a little red meat now and again has been proven scientifically to be good for a person, though my philosophical and spiritual ruminations on it continue. However, in the meantime, I can eat grass-fed bison with no hormones added for $6 a lb.?! I must be dreaming. I thought that would cost a lot more than that! Their organic butter is priced lower than I have seen elsewhere in Austin as well as some other popular items. As always, it's best that you know your prices when shopping at any store! The staff is friendly and eager to please, and if I am ever looking for a good quality vitamin or supplement, well, this is Natural Grocers' middle name! They actually started out as "Vitamin Cottage" in fact. They have aisles and aisles of highly conscious vitamin and supplement choices, a small book nook, and more, more, more. The cost? LOW -- yes!! The quality? HIGH -- yes! The selection? GREAT -- yes!! The produce? They ONLY carry ORGANIC -- yes!! And yes, I know that some local producers are truly organic without the legal label, and that's all GREAT; but Natural Grocers, being a big non-local chain at this point with something in the area of 30 stores (26 of which are in Colorado, where it was born), is doing what all big chain stores should do, in my opinion, and that is to demand organic for the produce. The more big stores do this, the more we are supporting a sustainable agriculture which, sadly, 99% of the grocers across America support barely at all. Sure, I would pay THEM to let me decorate their place to make it more homey and pleasing, and the outside of the building and parking lot are what they inherited and just "city ugh" to me. But hey, there's a bus stop right in front of their store (#1 and I believe #3 and #101 as well, but I have to double-check), and a store that tries this hard to keep prices down while never short-shifting me on quality can only go 5 stars in my book. I bought a bag of frozen beef bones at this Natural Grocers about a week and a half ago. It was in the soup section and had a recipe for how to make bone broth soup on the back of it. I loved it and went back to that Natural Grocers, specifically to get those bones again. I go to that store a lot because I work next door, so I'm there sometimes 3 or 4 times a week, I know the cashiers pretty well and they know me. I asked a woman, who I later found out was the manager, about the bones because I couldn't find them this time. And she told me they had never had them and that I was wrong, I couldn't have purchased them there because they've never had those. I then went to the cashier who remembered me and even remembered the bones i had bought. I can't believe I was treated like this by a manager! I was made to feel not only wrong, but also crazy, because she kept telling me that my experience had not happened. Horrible customer service! I don't care that they didn't have them, but her reaction was rude and condescending. I will not be going back to that store. read more

There are only two places I like to send my food money. First, Old Tom The Farmer, the indeterminately ancient turnip farmer who's been kicking ass and planting turnips since before the dust bowl. Well... I've been back a couple times since my last review and each experience has been at least better than what I wrote about before. They have definitely earned a couple extra stars, but something about each visit there for me just falls short. I will only go if I have to (in the area and not worth driving back north). The staff was friendlier, for sure. More helpful. But not altogether as attentive (the cashier) as the other locations. Now, I admit, I had to go back here tonight after I left Wheatsville, so I came twice.. The first time with the main cashier wasnt quite as good as the second trip with the backup cashier this time. He was great. Should have gotten his name... But didn't. He was super cool. Treated us all like the family...like normal. If the store were full of him...it would be great. The girl in the supplements didn't have a "good" knowledge of what was being asked, which was simple... But oh well. With the exception of the backup cashier, I'd rather go north. Or even cedar park. This store is not nearly as big as Whole Foods, nor has all the glamour, but this store does have exotic meats. Buffalo, Bison, Elk, and Ostrich. I was draw here as I was looking for goat. The corporate office contacted me via Twitter to let me know that they had other exotic meats. I decided to drop by to try some of these exotic meats. Since today was their soft opening, it was quiet and clean. I had the luxury of having my own shopping attendant to answer my every question. "Is this cocoa just unprocessed or raw?" "What's the fat content of this ground buffalo?" "Is this arnica classified as a vitamin (though it isn't), and if so, can I get it in the case?" Dry groceries and vitamins by the case are 10% off. I'm not the only one though. The other shoppers in there had tons of detailed questions. I like this place as some of the items are really reasonably priced. 3 pounds of organic fuji apples for 1.99? Give me. 12 oz of unsweetened cocoa for only 5.99 is way cheaper per pound than HEB brand cocoa. Nice. The arnica is a dollar cheaper than at Whole Foods. I also like getting to try exotic meats that weren't too expensive. Some cuts (the bison sirlon) was quite pricey, but others were really inexpensive. 5.49 for a pound of buffalo stew meat. 3.99 for a pound of ground buffalo. Not too expensive considering it is expensive and hormone free. They also carried Solid Gold dog food. Solid Good isn't the best dog food around, but it is much better than most of the products out there. One thing that this store is lacking is prepared food. There aren't that many things I can just pop in and buy if I'm hungry. The bulk foods and spices are prepackaged to keep costs down and dirty grubby hands from contaminating everything. That's all good, but sometimes I just want to have 4 chocolate covered pretzels, not an entire pound. I'd come back once in a while to pick up a few special items, but selection overall is much smaller than other grocery stores. Also, for the first week or so, shoppers who spend more than $35 get a free re-usable shopping bag. read more

I think Nick nailed it by describing Natural Grocers as a cross between GNC and Wheatsville. It has a similar "we are a small, independent grocer" feel (note, however, that this is NOT a small, independent grocer; their website lists 30 locations nationwide) but it also boasts a HUGE stock of vitamins - so many that you could sort of get lost in the vitamin area of the store and imagine that you were in a GNC. The overall result is a bit on the sterile side, frankly, although not overwhelmingly so. Prices seem to vary quite widely. Organic red kale runs $2.50/bunch here, whereas it's only $2/bunch at Whole Foods and Central Market. On the other hand, the pre-mixed chai concentrate I buy was on sale at Natural Grocers for $3.49 (usually $4.29), but costs $4.99 at Whole Foods. So, it's best to be familiar with the going rate for the products you buy if saving money is important to you. Produce selection seemed sort of limited, as is the selection of fresh meat (there is no meat or fish counter; it's just pre-packaged stuff in a refrigerated case). No fresh seafood at all. As Jennie C. mentioned, they do have an eclectic selection of exotic meats, although I believe all of them were frozen. None of this is a big deal, but it does make it a little difficult to get all your shopping done here...and there is a bit of a disconnect between the idea that this is a "natural" grocer and the fact that there's a relatively small selection of fresh goods. Service was very Austin-friendly; the folks I encountered here (all of whom were males, for some reason) reminded me of the crew at Whole Foods; edging on alternative, but generally of a social ilk. Perhaps this is a function of their newness, but the store was fairly unpopulated, which allowed me to comfortably browse around without being jostled by other shoppers, and there was no wait once I was ready to check out. Due to the very limited selection of fresh produce and meat and the fact that they don't have any fresh seafood, Natural Grocers won't ever be my go-to for general grocery shopping. However, at present, it's a no-fuss way to quickly grab a few staples, and if they eventually have a sale circular, I could imagine myself stopping by to take advantage of some of their excellent sale pricing. I am a fairly frequent shopper, as I like to have fresh food and have to share a fridge with two other people. I'm a pretty dedicated Central Market fan (and I also use Greenling and go to farmer's markets), but I also like to check out other places from time to time. Natural Grocers is becoming one of my favorite bricks-and-mortar establishments (along with Fresh Plus) for quick-in, quick-out visits when I just need one or two things to tide me over until the full-on shopping trip. They have a small but well-curated selection of cheeses and produce, exotic meats, and lots of quirky snacks (e.g., raw food crackers and salmon jerky). I also appreciate the vast array of tetrapacked soups and the good variety of almond milk. I loooove almond milk, but apparently a lot of other people do, too, and sometimes when I hit other stores there's an empty spot where it should be on the shelf. Also, they have Amy's No Cheese Pizza-- yay! I realize I just mentioned cheese up there, and I do eat it, but the No Cheese pizza is notable and delicious not because of its lack of cheese, but because it has caramelized onion puree in place of tomato sauce, and that's just awesome. They also have a lovely array of essential oils and carriers, as well as all the little bits and bobs you'd want to bottle up custom mixes of scents and grooming products. I am glad that this place exists. I think Austin can support a variety of little places like this that trade off floor-space for accessibility and convenience. read more

Here are the top reasons I go by Natural Grocers even when I still have to run to HEB or Central Market for the bulk of my grocery shopping: 1. NG is the only place I know of that has lactose-free organic skim milk. 2. They refrigerate their bulk nuts. Keeps 'em fresh. 3. Their fruits/veg section may be small, but it's all organic, so you don't have carefully confirm organic status of everything you pick out. 4. Peaches are consistently good when they have them. (I think they just don't sell them if they aren't.) HEB and even CM peaches are 50% likely to be mealy or rot before ripening. 5. They sometimes have organic bok choy. Only place in town I know of for this too. 6. Cool oddball things to try once and awhile - like dandelion greens, rainbow bunch of chard, etc. Organic, of course! 7. Good selection and prices on lean grass-fed beef and buffalo (frozen). 8. They don't even offer plastic bags. Either bring your own or they will pack your purchases in cut-up recycled cardboard boxes. 9. They stock Horizon organic reduced fat cream cheese. (Most places just have the organic full fat version.) 10. Uncured beef hot dogs cheaper here than CM. 11. I can get in and out in about 10 minutes, which leaves me extra time to negotiate the parking hell over at CM or HEB for the rest of what I need. No, I can't do all my shopping at Natural Grocers, but it's great for those unusual items you can't find anywhere else. read more

If I were paid more than a lowly teacher's salary, I would shop at Wheatsville or Fresh Plus every time I needed to stock the fridge. But the reality of my financial woes always leads me to Hancock HEB to fight the throngs of shoppers with no self-awareness who stop their carts in the middle of the aisle to search for the PERFECT salad dressing with no regard for the dozens of people trying to pass them. Then I found Natural Grocers. And it's awesome. Here's why: 1. It exudes that health-food-store-aroma that makes me feel like I'm already taking the necessary steps to detox my body from a kick-ass weekend just by walking through the door. 2. The prices rival that of HEB's health food section. In other words, eggs don't cost $5/dozen. 3. The people that work there are really helpful and friendly (unlike Wheatsville, where the cashiers are not-so-discreetly judging my choice of pasta sauce, attire, and lack of patchouli). 4. Their vitamin and supplement section is HUGE and well-priced. 5. No crowds, no health-food elitists (at least when I was there). read more

Horrible customer service. I wanted to ask a quick question, and the employee just puts me on hold. Since the store nearby my place, I drop by. And nobody is concerned about answering the call. They're all busy just bagging things and not caring about the customers, because they're doing a promo they are underprepared for. I bet I can wait up to an hour and still not have anyone pick up. I really want to like Natural Grocer. They are the only place I can find my favorite vegetarian tamales. They have a local brand of brownies that are some of the best I've ever tasted. They have TVP and other slightly hard to find groceries for decent prices. They even have my favorite curry salsa! Buying natural and local is cool. However, every single time I have come here I have picked up a product, thinking about buying it, and found mold on it. Despite the fact that I appreciate the company and find their selection pleasing, it really worries me that obviously no one is checking expiration dates or really paying attention to their products. I'm a huge fan of this market too. I was in there today as a matter of fact. One thing I did notice was it is always as cold as a freezer in there. Next time I go in I'm going to take my scarf and mittens and long johns. Please adjust the temperature to make it more comfortable. I found myself wanting to get OUT of the store and get some heat from the sun on my body. I definitely would have shopped longer. That's my only gripe. The organic produce is awesome and the bulk foods and nuts are great and less expensive than the big chains. I buy my almonds and walnuts here. They have many specialty products as well. Many dairy items and specialty drinks are well below HEB, and Whole Foods. The vitamin aisles are endless and they even have a nutrition coach that will sit down with you for free to discuss what is going on with your health and eating habits, etc. They will make recommendations which have really been helpful to me and my overall health. If you want to have good BM's this is the place to go...LOL I agree that there is no holier than thou approach in this store...like other more boutique kinds of health food/vitamin stores. Kind of a mix between a GNC and Wheatsville, Natural Grocer is the newly opened 'health food' grocery store on Guadalupe. They seem a tad more sterile than wheatsville... but they're new, so that's understandable. They've still got the hippie vibe.. props for that. The prices are a tad lower than other organic places as well, we'll see if that lasts. I was leery of this place, being an out-of-town chain and all, but their philosophy seems pretty solid: At Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage we give you the following pledge: * Our groceries & other products do not contain artificial flavors, colors or sweeteners * Our groceries & other products do not contain hydrogenated oils or added trans fats * Our groceries do not contain artificial preservatives * Our fresh dairy products come from cows free of artificial growth hormones * We do not sell irradiated foods * Our fresh & frozen meats are naturally raised without the use of antibiotics, artificial hormone implants, or animal by-products * We sell only 100% certified organically grown fresh produce. The prices here are really good (seriously stock up for some of their sales), and I really love how the bulk section is all pre-bagged. The employees are super friendly and helpful, and they'll probably recognize you once you've been a few times. Aside from all the food and supplements - check out the "beauty" section. Where they carry lots of natural products for bath, body, cosmetics, etc. They have one of the best selections and prices in town on essential oils. There's a great selection of natural and organic skin care. I've also been able to pick up some fun things like empty glass bottles with eyedropper tops (for my own mixtures and tinctures) and a lavender scented acupressure eye pillow (I'm in love with that pillow). The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. I got a great recommendation on Oceans 3 Beyond Omega-3. I once purchased a magazine, but accidentally left it at the check out counter. After one visit to Natural Grocers, I'm kind of in love. Some may denounce the fact that their produce section is lacking or their selection of other products is limited but that's not their purpose. You can go to Whole Foods and find most of what Natural Grocers offers and much more but you're likely pay much more for it. I randomly discovered this place on a recent visit to Buffalo Exchange. I stopped in looking for a specific vegan supplement but found so much more. Their selection of vitamins, supplements and minerals is overwhelming. The variety of bath and body products is equally as astounding. I ended up picking up of a variety of items that you can't normally find at your normal grocery store like HEB. I was extremely surprised that their prices were extremely competitive and often cheaper than HEB or Whole Foods. Specifically, I discovered that they carried my vegan protein mix for 24% cheaper than Whole Foods (the only other place I can find it). It was more disheartening due to the fact that only three days earlier I overpaid and bought this at Whole Foods. This is not the type of place where I'd get produce and other common items but I will definitely be back to get those other key essentials that I can't get anywhere else... and at a much cheaper price. read more

If you're looking for a local market to replace the co-op or big corporate grocery store you normally patronize, you *really* really will not dig this place. The produce section is paltry and selection is slim compared with similar markets of this size - Wheatsville, for example, definitely the clear winner here. All the meats are frozen. All of them. Which was useless when I wanted to grab something fresh to cook for dinner. I was just really bummed about the extremely limited selection here, when it came to food staples. If you're looking for some specialty product, maybe this is the place for you. It's nowhere near being replacement for your everyday grocery market, however. read more

Initially, I wasn't too impressed with this place last year. The atmosphere is just so-so. Kind of bland for a grocery store. Anyway, I'm glad I have given them another few tries b/c I really have been impressed by their knowledgeable staff when I was looking for vitamins/ products safe for use while breastfeeding. The gal spent a good deal of time with me and understood I didn't want to spend $60 on calcium supplements that only last me a month! We found a happy medium. I also really like that all of their produce (is it really ALL?) is organic, so no need to comparison shop and/or worry about contaminants and pesticides. I was lured into trying a new laundry soap that I've become a huge fan of, so I appreciate their offering something different. I regularly stop and shop here for all my eco-friendly cleaning supplies. They have good prices on usually expensive items. Oh, and they offer a really nice selection of baby care items (shampoos, soap, what to get homeopathic if your baby gets sick, etc)! Bravo! read more

Love it! I was able to find everything I needed without asking anyone to help me, which is always a plus. The aisles are clearly labeled. For the supplement section, they have handy dandy guides that you can reference to make sure you find exactly what you need. Prices were within reason and they had a great selection to chose from. We'll be purchasing the bulk of our supplements from them rather than GNC from now on, it's worth the drive from CP. read more

I go grocery shopping as often as some people go out to eat. I love it. I don't think I'll be making regular drop-ins at Natural Grocer, though. Despite a few great deals, it just doesn't compare to bigger stores. It's nice and clean, but it doesn't have a very comfortable feel. A decent selection of organic goods is available, though no one area stood out as having a great variety. Bread selection is notably lacking (lots of frozen loaves, which are definitely not my thing; no fresh French bread or other non-basics). Produce included some excellent deals, but there wasn't much variety available. They've honed the selection of dry goods, mostly in a good way, but prices are average to high. Decent Thai/Indian/Mexican/Japanese selection. Keep an eye out for their sale items, which have really good prices -- everything I bought was on sale for May. I strongly dislike that their 'bulk' items are prepackaged. I'm sure there's a reason for this, but it makes browsing difficult and I rarely want any bulk items in the quantities they've selected for me in advance. (Bulk prices aren't that great, either). I'm not sure why they refrigerate nuts and some other bulk items, but it really seems like overkill. The selection of dried herbs is pretty extensive, but I buy bulk herbs because I want just a tiny bit at a time (so it won't go bad); their large premade bags were silly. The huge supplement area will be a draw for some, but I'm not a fan of the heavy supplement and/or homeopathic approach to health. I may stop in when I need to replenish my multivitamins, though. The helpful staff seemed to be everywhere I looked -- I was overwhelmed by the number of employees in such a small store. The woman stocking the beauty supplies was eager to offer useful advice on skincare, which I appreciated. Bring your own bag. Get a basket before you walk through the first set of doors -- I was halfway through the produce section before I realized I'd missed them, and I had to walk back out to get one. read more

Things I like(d) about this place: -A block from my apartment. -All organic products -Usually cheaper than Wheatsville, Whole Foods, and Central Market (esp for regularly-purchased items like Amy's Frozen Dinners) -Lotsa items in bulk for long-term healthy consumption -Weekly quality sale items like Pacific Almond Milk and Amy's soups -Enough of a produce section to get a good home-cooked meal going -Any supplement/vitamin you can think of -No bags! If ya need, they have some boxes for your to carry your goods in Things that docked a star: -Closes at 8pm -Not much of a prepared foods section (but hummus and Foodheads sandwiches with a bottle of kombucha covers the bases) -Some older/slower items end up moving to the freezer so perhaps you'd be getting a fresher product at a competing market in the same neighborhood -Can't get ALL the ingredients you'd need for a home-made Iron Chef battle. All in all, this is place is pretty awesome and one of the things I miss about Austin. read more

In my mind, I can imagine the perfect "as good as it gets" grocery store. I don't think natural grocers is quite there, but in Austin, Natural Grocers is as good as it gets. Its all organic with HEBish prices. Although I have to drive across town to get there, Natural Grocers has everything I need at the quality and price I need it at. They are the only place I know of besides farmers markets that sell Elk and Lamb on a consistent basis. Produce is well priced. read more
