I went here for the first time the night before taking a trip and what I thought would be a yummy small meal turned into a 1400 dollar pain in the butt. I ordered the meatball appetizer and inside one of the meat balls was something hard enough to break my molar. I didn't say anything at the time because quite frankly and probably correctly I didn't think it would get me anywhere. I had to take my trip with a painful broken molar which has turned into a 1400 dentist bill. I can't imagine what it was, I must have swallowed it but I'm guessing a bone. I've lived in St Louis for 40 years, used to live in the neighborhood, and have never been to The Haven until now. Our meals were good, nothing fancy. I had the lemon pepper grilled chicken, mashed potatoes, and green beans. The gravy was very salty, but everything else was pretty good. Was treated rude because I was a woman alone at the bar from a get go. Bartender paid not much needed attention to me at all , would have liked for my soup to be heated up,(it was truely acceptably cold) was never asked. Chicken was so hot off the grill on my way overdressed salad that the lettuce turned to soup. read more

We hopped in here after hanging out with family at the bar down the street--the Hilltop. We wanted a tasty late night dinner at a bar and grill, and that's exactly what we got. My husband ordered the French dip, and he surprisingly discovered the meat to be tender and not chewy or fatty like a lot of other places. My burger hit the spot, and the crinkle fries won me over. He didn't regret ordering the chips. Since that night, we've been back about three or four times. We've sat at the bar all of those times, except for one. I've decided that the Haven's food might just well be worth stomaching the often loud conversations of misogynistic men at and around the bar. My husband refers to it as the "broha retirement home." This couldn't be more true as many of the patrons consist of uber Alpha-male wannabe types who like to shoot their mouths off while watching various sports on the TV and objectifying and degrading women to either maintain this image or even worse, to unwind and unleash their true selves while downing beers. If I can overlook all that for a cod sandwich, that speaks volumes. read more

I went into The Haven once shortly after I moved to Holly Hills, back in 2005. I'm pretty sure the jukebox stopped and all the old men turned around on their barstools to give me the eye. It was dark, smoky, dirty, and I loved it. It closed shortly thereafter and I was devastated. (Ok, devastated might be a bit much. Sad, at best.) So when I saw that The Haven was getting new life about a year ago, I was overjoyed. Lo and behold, it still has that great South City neighborhood bar feel...but now it's clean and bright. Love! The first night we went, the kitchen was closed -- but the owner, John, still made me a yummy turkey sandwich and fries. That's when I realized that not only is this a drinking hole, I can actually eat here! The food far exceeds expectations and is always a great spot for a casual dinner. (I don't know if it qualifies as "Fine Foods," as advertised on the old-school neon sign outside...but close enough.) It's a tad smoky, and can get pretty crowded -- but I'm not complaining. And all of the staff is so nice. Definitely one of my favorite places in StL, epitomizing why I love living in South City. read more

The Haven is kind of an upscale Southside tavern. Not too much bar and not too much restaurant - a perfect mix. For me, the menu was just right for this type of place. Interesting, but nothing too fancy for the regular folks coming through the door. You'll be disappointed if you came for the foie gras appetizer. I came with my daughter for dinner yesterday. She had the kids chicken strips, which tasted really good and for $4 was a decent deal. I asked for a suggestion and the waitress mentioned the basic Haven burger, which is a bacon cheeseburger. It's kind of what I had in mind coming in, so okay. I asked for medium, but I didn't see any pink. Still, I'm not fussy about that, since it was really juicy and just a great burger. I think I saw another review mention thick-sliced bacon, but this was just regular bacon cooked perfectly. For a side, I upgraded to fried pickles, a Haven specialty. They were as good as any I've ever had, and I've had some really good ones. The burger and fried pickles made an awesome meal. Way too much food, but I ate it all anyway. My doctor would have been very disappointed. I do have a minor complaint about the service: Did you ever have a meal where you weren't really sure who your waitress is? That's how my meal at the Haven went yesterday. I really do appreciate when the wait staff helps each other out - everyone wins: customers get good service and the servers get good tips. In this case, though, I kind of felt like the new waitress had kind of "stolen" the other server's table. It kind of made me feel like I was aiding and abetting, especially when the second waitress brought the bill and ran the credit card. It's not like the first one left or anything; she brought us a refill pretty late in the process. Kind of weird. I hope the first waitress got at least part of the tip. I walked in the door and it was like a scene out of Aminal House. All heads turned and stared. Nope. I don't live in the neighborhood and everyone knew it but this little bar on Morganford won me over with its better than average bar food and great people watching. By watching I mean staring at 98% of the bar wearing sports jerseys. Welcome to South City. The meatball appetizer was awesome and the french fries were decent. My friend ordered a hamburger but sent it back to be cooked a little more after which she determined it was excellent. Good beer selection and casual friendly atmosphere once you settle in for a bit. Went back on Saturday to reaffirm my love for their burgers. If possible, everything was better. Delicious Haven Burger with 3 cheeses and 2 nice strips of bacon was as juicy and full-flavored as ever. The bun was fresh, the fries were crisp and the pickle spear had a nice snap. All for under $10. Mama had the Patty Melt which had a generous amount of swirly rye bread. Her only complaint was that she had a lot of bread left over, but the doggy box solved that. We walked out the door with 2 meals and 2 drinks for under $25 before tax. Simply one of the cleanest, well-staffed and friendly neighborhood bars in south city. Another restaurant delivery through Skip The Dishes that bites the dust for me. I ordered the chicken wing dinner with 2 sides. I asked for steamed broccoli and French fries. When I opened the bag to eat (at work), one container had chicken wings and the other had fries. When I called the woman that answered didn't have a clue what to do except suggest the delivery driver ate my broccoli. Restaurants on Skip the Dishes for a large part are treating these deliveries as second hand customers and what they need to realize is, the same people that order here are the ones that come in (or used to) and eat in their establishments. We started with fried pickles based on reviews. They were good, but nothing special compared to other fried pickles. Then had the steak sandwich and coney dog for dinner. Both were pretty good. First, I love the staff... they are very accommodating and patient... one even held our newborn son for a few minutes during a meltdown... to allow us to eat for a minute.... you know, with both hands. I can tell this is a great place to catch a game, and a few suds... Props on that. Having said all that...Holding my baby only takes away my ability to tell you how bad your food was... After being here 3 times now, I can only say it is in fact a Haven... a haven of average food. I ordered what was called Chicken Chablis... which obviously sat in the window for about 10 minutes, it was almost cold... and the sauce had glazed over, telling me it had been just sitting there waiting for the rest of our table's food. Bland Bland Bland... a little garlic and maybe some actual Chablis would have made it good. Why do average cooks keep trying to be Cheffy with dishes that are over their skillset. It Was Horrible. I apologize, I know I am picky and have higher expectations than most people that walk through the door... but that food is just MEH! For a 3 top to wait 30 minutes on a Tuesday night with a 6 month in tow... is uncalled for. In that time, I saw 2 things leave that kitchen... salads. What are you doing back there Chef? I like The Haven. It isn't 5-star food, but it's good bar food, and their burgers are pretty darn good. Their fries aren't bad, though I've learned to order them well done, as sometimes they can be a bit on the rawer side for my liking. The wings are good too. My boyfriend likes the BBQ, I like the hot. They're crispy, either way, which is great, and the BBQ type are loaded with sauce. If you aren't a super saucy fan, do like I do, and ask for it on the lighter side. Ranch dressing is good as well. Seems homemade, and isn't super thick and filling like some I've had. It's great on one of their salads, which I've had good experiences with. Onion petals are good, albeit filling and a bit greasy, although I think that's the point of onion petals, is it not? Burgers are excellent, and huge, and taste homemade. I get mine with provel and bacon, and I'm in food heaven. The television situation there is always a bit of a challenge for me. I don't care for football whatsoever (I'm a total baseball girl, who bleeds red), but football seems to be the sports programming of choice at The Haven. I don't understand that, because it's usually not Rams games, but teams of other states that they have on the televisions there, even when the Cardinals are playing a game that day, at the same time, but ... whatever. To be fair, whenever I've asked the waitresses at The Haven to turn at least one television to the baseball game, the waitresses have done so without hesitation, so I can't complain much, but it would be nice to have the Cards game on all of the time, whenever one is playing, without having to ask. The waitresses are all nice, and they get to know regulars like me pretty quickly (I live up the street, so I stop by quite often). Arrici (excuse my spelling if I am spelling it wrong) is my fav waitress at The Haven, and is always super helpful, and a real gem. The Haven is lucky to have her. She always takes good care of me whenever I visit. Drink prices are on the cheap side, which is nice, and they aren't stingy with the amount they give in regard to food or liquor. I'd like to see more choices offered on draft, such as Bud Select instead of the darker Schlafly Ale they offer on tap, but maybe this will happen in time. Overall it's a good place to go to get a bar type meal, a cold beer, and watch a sports game. No smoke, no fuss, just a good neighborhood feel. read more

I like this place, It's a few houses down from where I moved ~ a year ago. Good standard local restaurant/bar. My only complaint is how easily it fills.. (and stays full even with finished guests during important sports games AGH!)(If I could get a seat with less struggle, I'd opt less to just have a beer and meal at my house.) I walked in and seated myself at a high-top near the bar. Shortly a waitress came by and offered me a menu and a beer. I sipped my ice cold Shock Top while reading over the menu. I decided on a patty melt with fries and a small bowl of chili. The chili was good, if not quite hot enough for my taste, and topped with cheese and onions. The burger was huge! I barely made it through half of it. It was well seasoned, topped with grilled onions and nicely presented on rye bread. The atmosphere was relaxed, sports on TV's everywhere. My beer was kept full and I was well paid attention to. Nice place, I shall return soon. read more

The Frisco melt had a very thin small over done burger that did not fit the Texas toast it was on and the Mac and cheese was from a box of kraft. The Haven used to be really good. I have been going there since I was a child. It's just not so good anymore. The burgers are small and burnt up. I even tried ordering a burger rare and it was still well done. The fries are frozen--I think we have actually gotten an ice cold fry on our plate. The staff is unfriendly and not attentive. I added a star because the cod sandwich is good. The toasted ravioli and toasted cannelloni are also good but they order those in from Nonna's. read more

This is my favorite restaurant in the city of Saint Louis. There is something about a bar where the staff remembers who you are even if you've only been there twice like in the case of my girlfriend. The service is amazing the atmosphere is phenomenal. It's family friendly and game day ready. They have amazing happy hour deals and amazing prices. The loaded chips are to die for. And the burger ... oh my god the burger. The haven burger medium rare is without a doubt the best burger in Saint Louis. To call it orgasmic would be an understatement. I've had maybe two burgers in my entire life that beat it and the only one I can remember was at Andrew Garfield's restaurant in Vegas. From the first bite this cheesy piece of excellence melts and dances in your mouth. I legitimately dream about this burger in the months leading up to my cheat week when I get to come in here and have it. I hate myself because I always eat it too fast and afterward wish that I could turn back time and eat it again. This place is a great hole in the wall bar. Went there on a Friday night with some friends and had a great time. We waited about 5-10 minutes for an open which was not bad at all. Our waitress was the best and recommended the steak sandwich. You must try this! 3/4s of our table got this and we all loved it. Drinks were cheap and they had touchtones, which who doesn't love that! Casual bar with good food and drink, hard to find now days for a reasonable price. Will definitely be returning. read more

You know that feeling when you read a yelp review and a few recent reviews caution about the quality of food and service of a restaurant? You kind of think, hmm, maybe I should avoid this place. Well, there were a couple of recent poor reviews on The Haven. After having lunch there today, I think those reviewers were completely off base. I love The Haven. Great burgers, cheap too. The sides are excellent, and the service could not have been better. It took a little while for us to get our order (maybe 15-20 mins), but in fairness we had a huge group, of about 15. Our server was friendly and accommodating and the entire staff was incredibly friendly. read more

I love the Haven. I go alone, quite often, watch football, hockey etc. I'm actually quite comfortable going alone, as a female, so Jenni E's comments I find ridiculous. Many single women go and sit at the bar, bartenders love it, and so if you're kind to them, they are kind to you (and even if you're not kind, they are). So, please ladies, don't let her comment stop you! I've never had one thing on the menu that I don't like and they will also pretty much do whatever they can to accommodate you. Their French Onion Soup is to die for! My personal favorite on the dinner menu is the Fried Pork Chop (but if you go on a Thursday night, it's the special and they add stuffing!!). But the spaghetti and meatballs are so dang good too. And don't even get me started on the burgers or the baked chips!! It's a great neighborhood bar, staff is friendly and eager to please. There's times I have to work at night, there for the pickings are slim after certain hours. One of our co-workers decided to do a food run to The Haven because he said it was good food. I ordered the Cod sandwich and the plus I have for that is you get a large amount of fish for the money. That being said, the card was not seasoned at all, I'll see got French fries but they were the crinkle cut, Frozen bag variety. And I'm pretty sure that they had been cooked about eight hours earlier and just left out on a plate somewhere because they weren't even remotely warm. Finally I ordered the Haven Delight, their specialty dessert but when we called it in to order they said they don't carry it anymore, how do you not carry your specialty dessert? I'm giving them one star for the fact that you do get food for a low price. But I will never go here again. read more

Great neighborhood establishment. Especially now that they no longer allow smoking inside. The food is really great. I suggest the fried pickles and cannelloni bites for appetizers and their salads and burgers are very good. The owner is really personable and always stops by our table to speak to us when we are there. He really takes the time to talk to our daughter and she likes that a lot (she is 4). The service can be slow depending on when you go but it's always friendly. The place is small so it gets crowded but it's worth the wait. They have lots of TV's so it's also a good place to catch the game. Parking is on the street so that can be a challenge. We walk there so it's great for those of us that live in the neighborhood. We frequent this place and I'm sure that won't change anytime soon! read more

The food here is actually really good! And that's not just by bar food standards. It is appropriately priced considering the size of the portions and the deliciousness. The service is really bad, but they do offer takeout orders if you don't want to deal with that. It's never been crowded any time I've ever been in, so it's a nice quiet spot to hang out if you're wanting to spend some time inside eating. So in a nutshell - service = bad, food = GOOD!
