My wife went there to get me a Panama hat by Stetson, and it was a little large. I called and spoke with owner who just bring it in and take care of it. When I got there, a wonderful young lady helped me. She let me try on different styles but I kept the one I had. And she got a smaller size and custom sized it for me. They stamp you initials on the inside as well as print a card with your name and phone number. I spent a pleasant tome talking to a customer and the owner about care of the hat. As mentioned by Yelpers, Gary's hat heritage goes back to 1915 when his grandfather started the American Hat Co on Main St. The Hat Store has been at this location for 30 years. Wow. What was an Indian doing in a Texas cowboy's heaven? Well, Avery my young son-in-law had always been asking me to wear a hat. Since I am going to India on May 1, I figured in the 104 - 110 F dry heat, in our family town of Rajula, I may have an airconditioned car. But if I get a ride to some place in a car with no AC, windows wound down and then walk to wherever we are going, The hat would help. Also, put it on your face in the plane and they will leave you alone. I like to interface with the cabin staff because they are some of the nicest people I meet on my flights. Think Continental/United. Everyone tells me they are a heritage Houston crew. I love the. Chicago crews suck. Anyway, I digressed. I ask for an Alpine and Gary fits me with a 7 1/2" brim. We look at my options for a band to replace the one that came with the hat. At the end of the fitting, shaping, stamping the inside with gold "N K S" and changing the band I pay Gary $89.00 plus $25.00 for a nicely studded brown band in place of the light band that blended in. Gary brings me the invoice and credit card receipt, helps me up, takes the hat to the car for me and waits for me to settle in before going back. SERVICE, SERVICE, SERVICE. read more

I went in for a traditional bowler. I walked out with a Derby with a western brim. I'm still damned happy about it. When the proprietors can judge your hat size by sight alone, help you make attractive style choices, then cut, shape, and finish the brim for you (AND stamp the inside hatband with your initials) well within the 20 minutes before close, they obviously know their business. You will pay for the hat you buy, but you should expect to pay - you're not at Wal-Mart buying the latest grudging acknowledgment of fashion trends. You're purchasing a quality accessory that, with care, you can likely pass to a grandchild. Just be sure to take it off when you're indoors. read more

Gary, the owner helped me find the right material and style for me. Went to Houston for the first time a couple of weeks ago to visit some family and had a list of things I wanted to do while I was there. #1 on the list was to buy a proper hat. A cowboy hat to be more specific. Here in SoCal, we don't really wear them, but I wanted one in my stable. After arriving at The Hat Store, I was surprised at how small it was, yet it was stocked top to bottom with hats -- all kinds of hats, as well as hat bands, belt buckles, and other knick knacks. I was greeted by Theresa (sp?) who was kind enough to listen to what I was looking for in a hat. I was leaning towards a Stetson, and they had the one that I wanted, but not in my size. She showed me a number of other selections in different makes and colors, and she then showed me a hat from American Hat Co. which she mentioned Gary could cut and shape like the Stetson I was looking for. I agreed and the wait began. The wait wasn't because there were so many customers. In fact, there was only one ahead of me. The wait is due to Gary's personal attention to you once it's your turn. In my case, he took a basic measurement of my head using the hat I had picked out. From there, it was just a matter of getting it dialed in for fit. Not too tight, but plenty enough that it would stay on while not causing any discomfort. After the fit was finalized, Gary took to cutting some off of the brim as it was quite wide. Then, it was off to steaming and shaping the crown and brim. Which, by the way, Gary explains what he's doing every step of the way since he does everything right behind the counter. In my case, the hat turned out better than a Stetson because this one was shaped and cut exactly like I'd asked. A custom hat for sure if there ever was one. Before you walk out, they give you a proper box to hold the hat in, a slip of paper inside the crown of the hat with all of the size measurements for future reference, and your initials stamped onto the leather at the bottom of the crown! This was a level of personalized service I have never experienced before, and sadly, most businesses could learn a thing or two from the Gary and the rest of the folks at The Hat Store. I bought a Resistol Panama straw western hat that Gary shaped for me while I waited. He and his staff even showed me how to find a hat that actually fits. Best little hat store in Houston!

My goodness...I wish more businesses were run more like The Hat Store. This is THE place to go if you're considering buying a cowboy hat. I had worn plenty of "off the rack" straw hats in the past and they never looked right...or were very comfortable even after weeks of wearing them in. So when I was ready to pull the trigger on a quality fur hat, I did a little research and found The Hat Store. When I went in and told them I was a newbie to fur hats, they took the time to explain in great detail the differences in quality, sizing, crown heights etc to help me make the best decision on a new hat. They even went so far in asking where and how I was to be wearing my hat, just to make sure I was going to be happy down-the-road. Then the magic started. Watching Mr. Gary work those hats is just awesome. Steam here, bend there, pinch here, tug there. All with the goal of making that hat look the best on my build and head shape. Walked out with a very nice black Resistol that day...loved it so much I went back a few months later and bought a Silverbelly American and new American straw for the summer months. This past weekend I took my father (visiting from Tulsa) into The Hat Store and even with them being fairly busy on a Saturday, Mr. Gary took the time to fit his difficult head shape and give the same top-notch customer service I experienced during slower business hours. Went in on Oct. 26 to look at hats, wanting a new felt & Panama straw! Gary told me he could order custom hats that would be in in 4-6 weeks if I chose. The felt took 2-1/2 months while the Panama took 3-1/2 months. The whole time I waited, I had to contact them for updates instead of them contacting me! When they finally came in, I drove 3 hrs to pick them up in Houston. After waiting 3 hours for them to be shaped, I finally left the store with 2 expensive hats that don't look like I'd like them to. I have 8 other custom hats, that weren't nearly as expensive, that look a whole lot better than the 2 new ones. I highly recommend looking elsewhere if you wear custom hats & if you wear off-shelf-hats, you'll find them elsewhere a lot cheaper. read more
