I hardly ever crave a burger, but I do get a hankering for the one from The Hat. There are some fancy pants (read: expensive) burgers in LA, and I love that the ones from The Hat are cheap (less than $5) and satisfying. + Their smallest serving of fries is, like, an enormous amount of fries. They serve it in a paper bag in case your fries spilleth over (which they will!). They have packets of ketchup and Cholula (now behind the counter, but you can ask for them), and I *highly* suggest you mix the two together for your dipping pleasure. + I'm a night owl and usually have dinner between 9 and 11 pm, and if I want to be lazy and just pick something up, most places in LA are closed these days. The Hat is open until 10 (yay!) and has saved dinner on more than one occasion. + Firefighters like it here (that's a good sign, right)? + They're open for takeout and have been good about implementing social distancing inside. I'm always content with the food and portion size whenever I eat at The Hat. Their most famous $8.99 pastrami dips are filling and satisfying. The bread on the sandwiches are already dipped when they serve them so the sandwiches are only good when you eat it fresh. But I doubt that will be an issue since the sandwiches are so good there will be no leftovers. There's so many Hats around LA. I've tried multiple joints and they all serve the same quality food. A classic. It's the same as always, except for the ever-increasing prices and a couple of tangential things. We have been going to The Hat on Lake in Pasadena for decades, and the food holds up. Parking can be tight - their lot is small. You order at the register, wait at your table for your number to be called, and get your food at the counter. The staff is always busy. The place is clean. The drinks appear to have been the victim of shrinkflation, but you can still get a free refill. What used to be self-serve (iced tea refills, napkins, paper plates, and condiment packets) are victims of COVID - you need to ask now. The cheeseburgers, grilled split hot dogs, chili tamale, and beef dip are delicious. The french fry and onion ring portions are huge, and taste good. The chili cheese fries could feed an army. They they say they are famous for their pastrami, but nobody in our family likes pastrami, so we will need to take their word about how good it is. For fast food Pastrami, its not bad, but it's not for me. I can only taste salt, nothing else. The condiments section helps! No comparison to Langer's or Canter's Deli ;however, The Hat does takes care of the pastrami craving I guess. I heard the chili cheese fries are good, so I ordered it. It's massive! I enjoyed it, but after two bites I was done. I would order it again, but with less cheese. The Hat is not on top of their game... The Hat is easy to find. The Pasadena location has parking, and I rather enjoyed the classic Americana vibe beaming from the glow of The Hat. There was security outside chatting with a satisfied customer they had just opened the door for. Inside feels like going back to the future... The smell is intoxicating for an addict like myself. There were two people in front of me, and they were quickly helped, giving me just enough time to decide on a Pastrami sandwich and fries. The prices were fair, in my opinion, and the food came out fast. Though you don't have much interaction with all the staff... I was left with a feeling of welcome from even the cooks, oddly, as only exchanged words with the cashier and the human who called my order and asked if I wanted condiments. That had much to do with the tables and floors being clean about an hour before closing. Our problem... the fries. The fries were abundant, like Fork Yaaaaas... requiring double-bagging feeds a family of 4 for a week amount, but a classic problem of quantity over quality. The fries were soggy AF. Unacceptable. The Hat... ...Say it with me: Seasoning Salt. The sogginess of the fries urinated on my dining parade... ...but I am privileged enough to own an air fryer, so rainbows were seen at home.
