The hat has been around forever. The pastrami sandwich is what they are known for....it never disappoints, everything was on point. The fries were crisp not greasy, the gravy (a must have) had excellent flavor. The staff is friendly and the restaurant is clean

Came here on a very hot Friday evening for pastrami dips ($12.60 each) and sinful onion rings. Only a couple of people ahead of us and dinner was ready pretty quickly. The tables were clean and they have their own parking lot. Good value for the money.

It was a great experience and the service is always friendly. Speed of service is fast despite the amount of clientele. The place is always clean. The food itself is decent. Portions are huge so it's good to share. Price is fair. Would recommend since it's a local staple but it's at par with its competitors. Didn't take a pic of the food but their wrapping is 10/10. Recommend the pastrami fries or sandwich and the chili tamale.

Food: 5 Mics Service: 5 Mics Ambiance: 5 Mics Food: Pastrami dip as is. Generous sized servings of pastrami, pickles, mustard and broth dipped French roll. It was a melt in your mouth tender pastrami and very filling. The sandwich alone filled me up, no need to add fries...I will admit I wanted to add fries but glad I did not. Service: The service was great. No complaints but nothing to rave about. Cashier was kind and had service with a smile. Ambiance: Loved the ambiance here. It was clean and had diner vibes. You can watch the line make every sandwich! Stop in, if you're in the area. There is parking, no line at 11:45am on Thursday when I went. You won't regret it.

We wandered in just a few minutes before closing time, but the helpful staff still served us an amazing pastrami sandwich. It was HUGE! We took it to go, as we were actually heading to another iconic west coast eatery. We had quite a feast back in our hotel room. I want to reiterate that the team on this Saturday night in May was so friendly to let us order in spite of serendipitously showing up mere minutes before closing. That sandwich was so incredibly tasty, too! Now that we KNOW about The Hat, I definitely want to return, and dine-in.

The Hat has been a staple in my life since the 1980's. And it's still as good as ever. I always get the pastrami dip (dry) with mustard and pickles. Then add mayo. Best pastrami around. It is thinly sliced but still moist. Bread is soft. Really good. They also have good chili cheese fries. Staff is always great and fast. I do miss the grab and go condiment station, but that is typical post-Covid.

They have a parking lot, but it says only 45 minutes to dine in. I eat slow, so i hope we dont get a ticket or car towed for that. The cashier who took our order was super nice and was kind enough to change my order at the last minute (after he called out what needed to be made). I wanted a ham and cheese sandwich, but i wanted it as a melt, but wasnt sure if they were able to do that. I saw a sign that they are able to do it. Hence, why he was super nice about changing my order. It was a cold night, and not many people where dining in when we arrived, but it got busy as we were waiting for our food. Our number was called and we got our food. I opened up my sandwich and I pulled it apart, it looked so good! It was so cheesy! I pulled the slices of bread apart to see if there was any ham because that was a LOT of cheese! Sadly, it was just a grilled cheese sandwich that was DELICIOUS, but it was the wrong sandwich. I brought it back up to the counter and the guy had to confirm with the cashier, understandable. He took what I had and threw it away. They remade my sandwich. Once the new sandwich was done, the cashier brought it to where I was sitting and apologized for the wrong order. It was a delicious sandwich and I hope all the other locations have that available!

This review is based on a takeout order only. So many times I heard this is the place I'd one wants a pastrami sandwiches. And the only reason I haven't been is because it's just too much of a drive from home. And then one day, Hubbers found himself nearby, called and asked if I wanted one. "Yes, please!" was the resounding answer. I asked for a plain (no pickles, no mustard, toasted bread.) Home after his long drive, the aroma pulls you in immediately. The sandwiches come sliced in half, so that's convenient. First bite and yum.com! The meat, of course, is the very center of this grub. It was juicy and well seasoned. The bread was soft and fluffy (didn't really experience the toasted part.) Overall delicious! FOOD: 5. Quality and quantity. Plenty for a second meal. SERVICE: N/A. VALUE: 3.5. PARKING: N/A. OVERALL: 4.25. Wish it was closer to home. But definitely trying it in person n should the opportunity come through!

Do you love Pastrami sandwiches? How about eating in a historic establishment with California history? You can do both right here! We shared one of these huge sandwiches and a small bag of fries, sorry no pics we were hungry. It's a small place where you hope to find a parking place off street. Walk in and order at the counter from a large menu on the wall, pay there take your number and find a seat. In a short time you'll have that hot pastrami in your hungry hands. It is big enough to share, but then again maybe you won't want to.

Visited here for a late night snack with a group of friends. The place was pretty busy considering it was around 11 PM. We ordered at the counter and sat at a big table. The ambience and decor was amazing, very old-school, friendly, and retro. Our entire party ordered the tuna melt, a side of wet fries, a side of pastrami fries, a side of onion rings, and some pastrami burgers. The number one thing to keep in mind about this place is that the portions are absolutely huge. The sides of fries and onion rings were incredibly hefty in both weight and food. We had a hard time finishing even with around 9-10 people. The tuna amount was very delicious and had amazing bread. The tuna was warm and the lettuce and tomatoes balanced it out well. The onion rings were crispy and fresh as well. The wet fries got a little soggy, but were otherwise tasty. The pastrami fries were incredibly filling especially with all the meat and cheese loaded on top. All very tasty, high quality and so affordable!! Highly recommend, very community and amicable atmosphere and servers, cheap prices and tasty food.

The place was just as clean as in Glendora. A bit smaller. A crowd came right after we sat down, good timing. The staff was accommodating.and took and had our at pickup counter in reasonable time. My favorite pastrami is my order. Again, it was filling for me eating only half. Guess I get two dinners for one. A bit expensive at $12.60 plus tax, about $14.00. We got a hamburger and two drinks, free refill. Still paid out about $31.00.

Everyone knows why we all come here. I'm gonna give you some pro tips Pastrami add Swiss and get the dip / au jus on the side. Chili cheese fries are shareable pass on the pastrami topping. Wild Cherry aka Cherry Fanta is a must. Chili tamale is decent. Pass on the onion rings as they are all breading and not so much onion. Service is always great Place is always clean

The big guy with the mustache working at 9:40 pm at the register forgot our order. It's our first time there and we're never going there again. They wouldn't give me an update on my order because he didn't give me a ticket receipt. One thing is saying you know what I forgot to give you the ticket but another thing is not taking accountability. HORRIBLE SERVICE AND WHEN I WAS LEAVING GAVE ME THE MOST DIRTIEST LOOK. Damn, that is a lot of pastrami for $12 in 2024. Not fancy artisanal pastrami, somewhat wetter than I would prefer, but still, tasty and very satisfying and perfectly heart-attack-y, just like you'd want. And Orange Bang, too? The Hat, you're killing it. read more

Dedicating my #ThankYouThursday review to The Hat and the freaking juicy burgers they provide me. Reasons to support The Hat during quarantine: + The burgers. The burgers! I hardly ever crave a burger, but I do get a hankering for the one from The Hat. There are some fancy pants (read: expensive) burgers in LA, and I love that the ones from The Hat are cheap (less than $5) and satisfying. + Their smallest serving of fries is, like, an enormous amount of fries. They serve it in a paper bag in case your fries spilleth over (which they will!). They have packets of ketchup and Cholula (now behind the counter, but you can ask for them), and I *highly* suggest you mix the two together for your dipping pleasure. + I'm a night owl and usually have dinner between 9 and 11 pm, and if I want to be lazy and just pick something up, most places in LA are closed these days. The Hat is open until 10 (yay!) and has saved dinner on more than one occasion. + Firefighters like it here (that's a good sign, right)? + They're open for takeout and have been good about implementing social distancing inside. Plus, there's a big parking lot! read more

Not as good as it used to be. Not only are the sandwiches costing about $4 ea more than posted here, real price is $11.99 !! I was given no condiments for my sandwich nor my onion rings. They are all now behind the counter where you can't get them and the server just turned and walked away. I ordered to go and was handed two bags and a container of jus with no way to travel w the questionable seal. The onion rings were real onion,a plus , and crispy. Fair. The first sample of the beef was gristle. Absolutely nothing on the bread but the roast beef. No pickles, peppers etc as a side. Final verdict : an old secret diet cheat was disappointing. Probably won't be back. Try Fair Oaks Burger for a better pastrami and better fries. read more

I have had it a few times and I really don't see what the hype is about. Def not the best pastrami sandwich I have had. Price is right though. We got 3 sandwiches and the wet fries for $40. The wet fries had what tasted like cheap canned gravy. And the bbq beef sandwich was drenched in a not very good vinegar based bbq sauce. Meat was tuff as well. read more

I'm always content with the food and portion size whenever I eat at The Hat. Their most famous $8.99 pastrami dips are filling and satisfying. The bread on the sandwiches are already dipped when they serve them so the sandwiches are only good when you eat it fresh. But I doubt that will be an issue since the sandwiches are so good there will be no leftovers. There's so many Hats around LA. I've tried multiple joints and they all serve the same quality food. It's a goldmine for locals. And as for tourists, if you have time for a quick bite and are not feeling the basic in-n-out burger, The Hat is a good alternative read more

A classic. It's the same as always, except for the ever-increasing prices and a couple of tangential things. We have been going to The Hat on Lake in Pasadena for decades, and the food holds up. Parking can be tight - their lot is small. You order at the register, wait at your table for your number to be called, and get your food at the counter. The staff is always busy. The place is clean. The drinks appear to have been the victim of shrinkflation, but you can still get a free refill. What used to be self-serve (iced tea refills, napkins, paper plates, and condiment packets) are victims of COVID - you need to ask now. The cheeseburgers, grilled split hot dogs, chili tamale, and beef dip are delicious. The french fry and onion ring portions are huge, and taste good. The chili cheese fries could feed an army. They they say they are famous for their pastrami, but nobody in our family likes pastrami, so we will need to take their word about how good it is. If you have never been, give The Hat a try. read more

I'm not trying to convince anyone that they've never had a pastrami sandwich better than the Hat, at all. What I will say is it's delicious and there's a reason they've been around so long. What I will say is there's no reason their wet fries should be that good(when eaten there and hot obviously). Also, the cheeseburger is so much better than I would have thought. So good. read more

Just went to this place for the first time the sandwich is off the chain I got the pastrami burger mouth the pastrami burgers juicy everything taste fresh I recommend this place the burgers 13 bucks but well worth it I'm a go back and try to tamale chili and some other things but definitely recommend this place read more

The Hat is famous for their Pastrami served on a double dipped French roll. The Pastrami is sliced thin, it is moist and packed with alot of meat. For fast food Pastrami, its not bad, but it's not for me. I can only taste salt, nothing else. The condiments section helps! No comparison to Langer's or Canter's Deli ;however, The Hat does takes care of the pastrami craving I guess. I heard the chili cheese fries are good, so I ordered it. It's massive! I enjoyed it, but after two bites I was done. I would order it again, but with less cheese. For fast food Pastrami Sandwiches I prefer ARRY'S in Montebello or Johnnie's Pastrami in Culver City. read more

The Hat is not on top of their game... The Hat is easy to find. The Pasadena location has parking, and I rather enjoyed the classic Americana vibe beaming from the glow of The Hat. There was security outside chatting with a satisfied customer they had just opened the door for. Inside feels like going back to the future... The smell is intoxicating for an addict like myself. There were two people in front of me, and they were quickly helped, giving me just enough time to decide on a Pastrami sandwich and fries. The prices were fair, in my opinion, and the food came out fast. Though you don't have much interaction with all the staff... I was left with a feeling of welcome from even the cooks, oddly, as only exchanged words with the cashier and the human who called my order and asked if I wanted condiments. That had much to do with the tables and floors being clean about an hour before closing. Our problem... the fries. The fries were abundant, like Fork Yaaaaas... requiring double-bagging feeds a family of 4 for a week amount, but a classic problem of quantity over quality. The fries were soggy AF. Unacceptable. The Hat... ...Say it with me: Seasoning Salt. The sogginess of the fries urinated on my dining parade... ...but I am privileged enough to own an air fryer, so rainbows were seen at home. The lack of fry crisp assassinates the idea of ever ordering the chili cheese fries. The Pastrami Sandwich is taste bud cocaine, ...I would eat one at a ball, in a hall, in a mall, during a fall, with you all, on a wall, center of suburban sprawl, with someone tall, during a brawl, ...or nightclub bathroom stall! ...I used my finger to rub the Pastrami on my gums. I'm not one to assume, so... ...To be clear, I'm hooked. I don't know if you, the reader, are about this life... Grab your hat and coat, and head down to The Hat for a head rush of a meal. Kinda disappointed...to start off I went on to greeting the cashier all happy..he looked annoyed and rude..Didn't even say hi and had the hurry up and order expression..I got nervous and proceeded to order...to only get sad thin looking pastrami sandwiches..keep in mind i drove.from the valley took me 1hr to go there and back home...mmm not going back ..back customer service plus small sandwiches..each is $11.99 I basically paid for bread..this place use to be bomb not no more read more

Worst customer service in Pasadena. The cashier was unbelievably rude, when I was thinking about a drink I would say I wanted a coke and she would be saying " what size!" It was like that for the whole order, I thought it was just me but f My mom commented to me asking why I thought she was so rude. I didn't enjoy my meal that's for sure and when I left, I made my way to her and told her " if she's gonna work in customer service she's gonna have to change her attitude or get another job because there is no excuse for how rude she was " . She said she was " sorry about that". Not going here anymore. And I guess I was so upset I didn't get her name. read more

3.5 Star I usually get The Hat at the Temple City location. I think roast beef (my absolute favorite) is slightly better there. Plus they have drive thru. Ordered my sandwich with double dipped but they were not dipped at all :"( This location is bright and clean. Friendly service and great energy. Small parking lot. It's the Hat, anything and everything is delicious. The portions used to be bigger, but still ok and same delicious pastrami and onion rings. Everything is always clean, even the bathrooms are clean. When washing hands before a meal I always appreciate a clean bathroom. Service is always there. Nothing special nothing to complain about. Order food receive food eat and go to your next stop. Made a reservation about an hour before, so when we got there we were seated immediately. After a quick glance at the drink menu, had to get the Mai Tai with lilikoi foam on top. So delicious. Had my first lilikoi foam in Maui and I love that I'm starting to see it around Los Angeles now. Adds such a punch of flavor to an after we balanced drink. For food, we started with the bacon deviled eggs and shrimp taquitos. Those deviled eggs were lightly fried, which was different, then had apple wood smoked bacon on top, just a really tasty bite. The shrimp taquitos were also not what you would expect, nice and light but still very good. Entrees we went with the center cut fillet and the prime rib dip with swiss cheese on a brioche bun. That sandwich just melts if your mouth after dipping it in the jous, and the cheese was the perfect accompiament. The fillet was cooked perfect as well, coming out medium rare. Overall, great restaurant in Pasadena. Definitely get the Mai Tai, Devine eggs and prime rib dip. Taquitos were good and, if you're feeling like another hg er appetizer, definitely a way to go . Brian was the standout star of the whole experience! His energy was exceptional and he is such a great conversationalist. He checked on us several times throughout our meal and made sure we were doing well. He on his own was HANDS DOWN a five star human being. At first, he wanted to seat us in the back corner but I told him the table was too small and he accommodated us with a bigger table. Our server Kiana came up to the table with a pleasant smile and greeting to take our drink orders. I got a glass of cranberry juice along with some water. My son got the American Dream cocktail along with some water. We skipped on dessert. From 4-6pm, they have a happy hour menu with some of their cocktails and shareable plates. The portions are just a bit smaller and the prices are a little lower. It's a good way to sample different items. I think we got a good variety of food to enjoy. To start, we got the Little Gem Salad. It was such a unique combination of flavors and SUPER delicate/light. My son and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The next starter was the Zucchini and Feta Fritters, which was good but not the best out of everything else we ordered. The zucchini was a bit mushy but the batter it was fried in was crispy. Another starter we shared were the Moroccan Spiced Chicken Wings. These wings are gigantic and very flavorful. They definitely pack some heat, so be careful. I don't think the A/C was NOT working to begin with, so the place was already hot. The wings made us sweat even more. For entrées, we got the burger and the pork belly. The bun, the meat, the cheese, the onions, and the crispy bacon...all of it mixed together into the perfect burger. I had wanted to add some mushrooms and avocado to it, but Kiana said they were unable to do it. I also asked for lettuce and she said that would be an extra charge. What extra charge for lettuce? We still got charged for avocado when the bill came, but they took it off once we mentioned it. The pork belly was also very tender, flavorful, and crispy. It's just hard to compete with the burger! We also got an order of the Belgian Fries to share and we were both pleasantly surprised at how good they were. The fries are salty and cut pretty thick. The sauce that came on the side was so yummy. We asked for a small extra cup to-go. All in all, the food was great and we liked everything. The vibe of the restaurant wasn't really all that for me. Brian genuinely made up for anything that was lacking in the atmosphere. He is such a wonderful asset to the restaurant and their company. The restaurant itself has been here for about 15 years now and it used to be a very old house. You can tell when you look around. They did a good job with the renovations, but you can see the different areas/rooms. I think they tried to keep the casual comfort of a home, while making it a slightly elevated experience. It was very clean everywhere, especially the bathrooms. They have one gender neutral bathroom, one for men, and one for women. No private parking, so you'll have to park on the street and put money in the kiosk. They also had an outdoor seating. Pretty BIG, only took picture of one side. They also have 2 small TVs. In the bar area and inside their cute lounge. I normally like to try new places, especially when I'm in Pasadena, so I'm not sure if I'll come back here. My husband could barely hear me. Curious about the rooftop seating so maybe a reservation for up there next time, maybe I'll get to try the peri peri chicken. Highly recommend!

The food Was Great here. I loved it ! However the customer service was not great at all... we had a group of 5 people consuming here and the Manager or supervisor or what ever she is had a nasty attitude. I had my service Dog License and my pup is still learning and still in training and barked 3 times in about an hour. Since I walked in with my service dog she gave me a very NASTY STARE AND DID NOT LIKE THAT I PRESENENTED MY DOGS SERVOCE LICENSE TO THE SECIRITY. my pup did. Ot pee or make a mess in there. He is still learning and on the 3rd bark she poke her head out & said if he barks again u guys need to leave. My dog did not bark anymore. When I left the front door she gave me a very nasty look , dogging me and so getto doing these eyes of hate. She then talked about me and my dog with another employee and this made me upset . Which is why I am leaving this review. If she would of kicked me out I would have suit them because my dog got his License. She was counting money and giving me a nasty look as I stood outside the restaurant. Very unhappy workers here. Terrible customer Sevice ! I came here on Friday with some of my friends because we were looking for something different to eat. One of my friends told me that we had to try these pastrami sandwiches and it was only 15 minutes away. It was about 9:35 and as my friend was driving...the rest of us thought we weren't going to make it. Luckily we got to the restaurant right before they closed (at 10). The guys were so nice that we were even able to finish our meal at the restaurant. I just wish they had a closer location to me. You must, I repeat must order the pastrami sandwich. If you do not care about your wait and arteries, then order the whole thing. If you aren't very hungry I recommend splitting it with someone. I got full off of half of it since I also had fries, but if you are really hungry order the whole sandwich. It is beyond delicious. My whole party shared chili cheese fries and wow there were sooo much...We even had some fries left over. I literally felt like i was going to die from the calories but i was still happy :). Anyways, if you are looking for a quick, non-expensive, delicious bite to eat then come try out The Hat. read more

Well, it neither blew me away, or was awful/bad,... I read that some people found the Pastrami a bit salty,... I agree. I read that some people found their recipe was not that special,... I agree. It is just "okay",... nothing special really. Good for what it was, but not all that. I know where to find really awesome Pastrami, but it is twice the price, and clear across town,... so you make your choices. This is fine for what it is, but I'd call it "seasoned, thinly sliced roast beef", more than I would call it a true Pastrami. ...which may be splitting hairs. I didn't think much of their onion rings either -- I just don't like corn meal battered onion rings. The fries looked good. The chile cheese fries looked HUGE, enough for two. Try it once for yourself; if you like it, then enjoy it and go back. I'm going to explore other options first. read more

OMG! SOOO RUDE.... employees alll have bad attitudes...... I asked if they have combos and the lady snapped saying "NO YOU HAVE BUY SEPERATLY THIS ISNT MCDONALDS"......i was floored. from the cashier to the janitor everyone has something up..... they act like im supposed to know everything about the hat....my first time there...it was gross they never told me they dip the pastrami in grease and oil broth.....EWWWWWWWWW.... NASSTYY if you want a angio plasty in the near future i highly recommend this place....go for it...the fries are like twigs. btw you should make an appointment with your cardiologist right before walk in and go see him on after you leave...jeeeez read more

I came here once on the way back from Las Vegas. We were starving and my friend pointed out that they have delicious pastrami sandwiches and that we had to try them. Just like Steve said. Pastrami pastrami pastrami! This was definitely a very filling and greasy sandwich, but after a long drive back from Vegas it was worth it. I believe this was the best pastrami that I have ever eaten. The chili fries are also delicious, but i recommend sharing them. You will get full off of the sandwich and fries together so you do not need to order two sandwiches. Great place!! read more

White castle and burger king had a baby and called it The Hat. As a New Yorker I have little tolerance for BS. Rated number 1 on yelp you have to be kidding me. I wanted a pastrami sandwich. This is not what there serving. Call it what ever you want just don't call it pastrami sandwich. Its a burger joint. The PS was made with some made up mystery meat. There was a full house so there doing something right. Mac Donald's is also packed. There doing something right too. read more

Oh. My. Gawd. The Hat is home of the biggest food coma you can ever inflict on yourself and it's so, so, so worth it. I never cared much for pastrami before I tried the Hat, but with an order of onion rings and a diet Coke (you know, because everyone's counting calories these days), it's better than just about anything you can fit in your mouth. if you're only going to have one meal in a day, or even a week, make it this one. read more

Hands down the best! Great price and the amount is very big.i have been here for years. Delicious.parking on the side. Great price for the same thing as you are aware that you are not feeling. you are making money I have to go check on the status of these fake you are a very beautiful woman in a bit and see if they are dumb you can put it in the mail tomorrow morning and then they will be back. read more

Oh, how I love eating at The Hat. I usually get their french dip pastrami sandwich, and if I'm eating with a group, I get their huge and delicious chili cheese fries. However, I went there a few weeks ago, and the total for 4 people turned out to be almost $50! I guess with their french dips going up so much in price, it's basically in the same price range as lots of sit-down restaurants. read more

The pastrami sandwiches at The Hat absolutely live up to the hype! I was in the Pasadena area and just couldn't miss the chance to stop by. You know a place is good when there's a line just to get into the parking lot! I had the barbecue beef sandwich, which was delicious, and the fries were great too. The staff was very kind, and service was quick. Definitely worth a visit! read more

First timer here. Overwhelmed with the menu, I just went with something simple but sounded filling. They don't have this on the menu but a friend told me to get the chili cheese fries and have them add pastrami on top. It came out to be a huge portion of fries and it lasted me about 3 meals. Very friendly people and it won't be my last time there. read more

Fast kitchen, as soon as you put your order in there's no waiting around. Good pastrami sandwiches, could add a little more greens on the sandwiches, so you don't feel like you're going completely off the deep end when you order their larger than life chilly cheese fries. Avoid the bathrooms, they're a little on the filthy side.... read more

Very rude service. First and last time I ever go there. I'm looking at the menu and just had a simple question. The guy behind the counter looked like he saw too many Scorese movies - rolling his eyes, giving me a dirty look. What for? I'm trying to bring you business. Stay away from here. read more

It's been a long time since I've been to the Hat but I happened to be in Pasadena and decided to stop by to pick up the pastrami and fries. It's good to see the place is still open and everything tasted great like how I remember it. Their Pastrami sand is the best. read more

Best Pastrami sandwiches anywhere. We live in Reno, NV now. So, when we go to LA for anything or even Disneyland, we stop by before or after to get "The Hat". My kids and I figure its part of the trip. If you haven't been, you best put this on your bucket list. read more

The Hat had excellent customer service. Workers were helpful. Price was reasonable. I personally didn't care for the food i ordered. Spent 2 dollars to give it away to a homeless man out front, But i would probably be back to try their other items on the menu read more

The Hat totally rules! I could eat there every day and pretty much do. The Pastrami rocks the house, the fries are awesome. Come hungry because they're going to pile your plate so high that you're pretty much going to have to be carried out in a stretcher. read more

An excellent place to go if you want a juicy, fatty, grease down your arm kinda sandwich. For less than $10, you can get a heck of a meal! The drawback: you'll have to workout for 12 hours after to burn it off. But sometimes it's worth it. :-) read more
