I was really hoping this time we went would be better. We hadn't been back for a while (probably a year or so) because of service and food quality. Wanted to give it another try (wish we hadn't). The appetizer of parmesan truffle fries was great. My husband's dinner was also fine. I ordered the fried chicken salad. When the salad came I took a bite of chicken and greens and realized the dressing wasn't ranch, it was vinaigrette (I hate vinaigrette) so I alerted the server, who immediately took the salad back. I got my plate back (same items from my first) and I could tell the salad had just been tossed in ranch on top of the other dressing. So now I have a salad with vinaigrette and ranch, it was horrible. read more

Clam chowder was more like soup and clams were quite chewy. Definitely nowhere near their claim of the best clam chowder. So far it is the worst clam chowder I have had in Seattle. Server served over people instead serving each person properly and we had to call someone to get service. We won't be back. read more

Breakfast offerings at THS are of a nice variety without being overwhelming. 4 stars for the atmosphere and service, 3 stars for the food and prices. It's not expensive, per say, but I don't feel my tofu scramble was worth the $12.00 (extra $2 because I wanted egg whites instead). The portion was just right, the tofu tasted horrible. My bf thought his scrambled eggs were "so good" and I really liked the wheat bread. The atmosphere really did make up for things the rest of the experience lacked. read more

Food was pretty good, a bit overpriced but not a lot of options in the area. The fish and chips weren't bad, but they were using cod and not mahi so as good as can be expected, a little over fried. The Mediterranean tower was very dramatic and beautiful presentation -hummus was good, pita soft and warm and the little salad at the bottom was very good. By far was the highlight of our meal. The garden salad was good, however said it would have shaved vegetables on it and it was just 4 small slices of jicama. Luckily the Mediterranean platter was big so it was enough to satisfy. When I was a little girl, I liked The Hardware Store. Then, it was a hardware store. You could buy nuts and bolts. Today you can get a screwdriver, but now it's drinkable rather than a tool to use for a frustrating home improvement project that will make you crave a drink. I love the atmosphere at The Hardware Store. It's both cozy and upscale. The dishes are a bit pricey, but you're paying for a satisfying experience. Today three of us had Sunday brunch. Two of us had the frittata. Nice. No frills. But the English muffins came with raspberry jam. It's the best of the jam family. My sister had the Thai salad. She liked it. Said it tasted healthy. Our bill, with coffee, came to $41. Our waiter was Mike. He was a delight. Relaxed and efficient. He's a 5 star man. I think The Hardware Store is a 4 star experience. The food is solid, the staff are lovely, the art makes me smile, and it brings back wonderful memories of summers spent on the most special of islands. read more

Pretty good food. We came here at the suggestion of family that lives on Vashon. I had a scallop entree that was pretty good. The scallops were tasty and cooked just right. They were on a bed of creamy veggies (parsnips? cauliflower? can't remember) which was a little odd and didn't necessarily go well with the scallops. They were good, just an odd combination. Wife had fish tacos, and she said they were very good. My cousin had a bleu cheese burger which looked awesome. I was jealous. Service was super-friendly and the decor was neat (old hardware store in case you were wondering). read more

I've gone to The Hardware Store many times since my last review. Sadly, I don't go often anymore. The slowness of service is a big reason - there is one server who is always so efficient and prompt but most of the time you wait a long time for a cocktail, for your food, for your check. It seems like we wait a lot more than we used to, even when the place is empty. The other reason is the menu. I've gone too many times where what was listed on the menu isn't what I ended up with on my plate. A Nicoise salad described as having a duck egg but arriving with no egg...and then the server says they don't have any hard boiled eggs prepared. Or a breakfast sandwich described as having Swiss cheese only but arriving just slathered with Cheddar cheese (along with the Swiss.) I understand that sometimes menu items need to shift based on availability, but I also think the customer should be alerted if s/he orders something that may be served differently than described. Based on these two issues, we just can't justify the expense. read more

Maybe understaffed today? We could see empty, clean tables but we're told 15-20 minutes wait (with 2 six-year-old boys, not fun). We were seated in only 10 minutes and the service was quite responsive. Kids menu portions were paltry without price to match. Off the regular menu, the potatoes and jam more than made up for the mediocre omelet. The fish tacos were above average. read more

This place is the most pretentious unfriendly staff I have ever encountered. I came in and no one was there and they said all of their tables were reserved. So they put me in a dark corner in the back. I tried ordering mashed potatoes because their fries taste like their freezer burned. I then ordered a ceasar salad, with chicken that was hot, and the salad was wilted. The waitress seemed put off that I was even there. She didn't waste any time putting the bill down. It would of been better to buy a frozen dinner and cook it at home. Do yourself a favor and save your money. I won't be back here. read more

Love this place. Great food, friendly staff, quick service, wonderful atmosphere. We did have to wait a few minutes until a hostess came to seat us, but other than that it was a great dining experience. One meal was enough for breakfast and lunch. Also like that they had a ramp at the front and side entrances as my mom uses a walker. This was my first time to Vashon, here for a friend's wedding. Great food... terrible service. We had Stephany as our server and she started out great. Got our order in quickly and our food was brought out correctly(by other servers). The 4 of us came for brunch - two visitors, two Vashoners who gave the recommendation. Menu has great variety for vegetarian and gluten sensitive. Local artists display art in this building environmentally sensitive former hardware store - thus the name. Good variety of drinks,wine, beer. Service was a bit slow mainly due to our charming waitress. In this very relaxed eatery - all good. Try the donuts and ask for the raspberry jam to add to them, yummy! read more

I have fond memories of this restaurant, and though it is still a great place, the food lacked the amount of flavor I was looking for, especially for the price point. I went there for dinner, and I ordered the steak roulade, and my boyfriend ordered the lamb chops. The lamb was cooked perfectly, but there wasn't much flavor to it, considering the price. He was expecting a bit more. My steak roulade was a bit dry, though the spinich/bleu chese filling was exceptional. I still love the ambiance, and love the history behind the location. Our waitress was quiet, but very attentive. The wine that I loved the last time I went was no longer on the menu, so that was a bit of a let down. I still recommend this spot when you're in Vashon, but wouldn't leave Seattle to visit this place. read more

The name is deceiving-I expected a hot dog cart outside the lumber yard, but was instead treated to a warm atmosphere with fantastic service. Gluten free options are listed on the menu and the staff was very knowledgeable about allergies and cross contamination. Huge wine list including local WA wines. read more

We had never been to Vashon before and used help to pick which restaurant to go for my birthday. The Hardware Store does not disappoint. I had the Fish and Chips and the Earl Greyhound to drink. Not only were both excellent, but the drink with the citrus complimented the Fish and Chips well. The service was friendly and prompt without being pushy. I ordered the chicken dinner to go. When I picked up the order and drove home it almost smelled like cigarettes and I don't smoke. When I opened the box at home, there was a horrible smell. That smell was from the mashed potatoes. They were the worst that I have ever tasted or smelled. The savior of the meal was the chicken. read more

Business casual never looked so good. Everything is house made, even the gluten free bread! Fresh fish, meats, awesome bar and wine selection, and even a good kids menu. This is where to go if you're looking for down home comfort food with a farm to table flair. The only down side is the wait time; don't go looking to get in and out quick. After working in the restaurant industry for a few years, I came to learn basic restaurant operations and how to treat your customers. The Hardware Store was horrible to deal with. My husband and I walked in, and the restaurant was EMPTY. We asked for a table for 4, and they were rudely like WELL WE'RE REALLY BUSY SO ITLL BE A WHILE. Umm ok. She continues DO YOU HAVE A RESERVATION?! Obviously not! Normally you ask that BEFORE you ask how many are in your party. I asked how long of a wait it would be and the hostesses continued with their attitude A WHILE. Umm ok. How long is a while?! And they couldn't give an answer. We were willing to wait, but frankly neither of us have either been treated so terribly at a restaurant. This is unacceptable. We ended up eating somewhere with a more pleasant staff. After we finished our meal, we had to walk by The Hardware Store and it was still empty! Clearly they just didn't want to serve us. Bye Felicias. Never coming back here. read more

Food was great, service was unbelievably bad. We waited almost 50 minutes for our food, had to beg for coffee refill. Watched other tables get seated, served, and leave while we waited. Waitress finally noticed and made some excuse. Brought our food and gave us a discount. We had gone to Vashon on my birthday specifically to have breakfast here...turned into lunch! I've been here twice now, once for lunch and once for dinner. I would give the former visit a 4.5 star, and the latter a 3.5. The lunch menu was very interesting with several seafood options that tasted delicious, I had a great fish sandwich. The dinner menu was more standard, burger and fries, pizza and a few more expensive entrees, I had a burger and fries, which was good, but not nearly as good nor unique tasting as the lunch. read more
