I have dined there a few times in recent months. And have polled friends as to their experience as well and hear the same result as mine. Too many times has my food and others come to the table way over cooked. Even my grand daughters chicken had to be sent back. This restaurant is way too expensive to be serving overdone food. The fish and chips tasted like they were made with Trader Joe's frozen cod pieces that sell for $3.99 a pound--with the same toughness and the same bad smell. It's great when restaurants have gluten free offerings, but not when they can't execute them! The gluten free batter falls off the fish and chips. It's not worth $12! I subbed a salad for fries (that had rotting lettuce in it) and was charged an additional $4 to substitute. Our waitress was harried and made multiple errors. Including bringing my salad with dressing on it when I'd asked for it on the side. When I brought it to her attention her response was, "well, it's only lightly dressed." What? How ridiculous. When she took it back to the kitchen to correct her error she brought it back without a fork and then was MIA for a really long time. Don't be fooled by the casual, relaxed vibe. You'll feel neglected and ignored and your order won't come out right because your server can't take the time to listen! read more

Friendly service and really great food. The historic location is warm and welcoming. The Mushroom Stroganoff with hand-cut noodles was delicious. Delicious food and good service. We ate here twice on a recent trip to Vashon Island, and really enjoyed it. We first ate here late on Sunday morning, and were impressed with the simple, tasty food and good beer selection. We tried the Caesar salad and oatmeal. We came back for lunch on Monday (many restaurants on Vashon seem to be closed on Mondays) and got a burger and the soup, salad, sandwich trio. Definitely try the homemade donuts with a cup of coffee if you have room after lunch! They're lighter and moister than most donuts, and are a great end to the meal. Definitely recommended. read more

Service was timely & courteous, and the atmosphere was comfortable & casual. Interesting menu with something for everyone, even if a little pricy. Salads were good. I wish they had described the "fried chicken" dinner as a fried chicken breast, since as a dark meat lover, I was sad when my plate of food came and it consisted of a too dark, on the edge of burnt chicken breast. My friend lives on Vashon so was excited to try this place but not very impressed in the end. We requested a booth but we're sat at a table because all of the booths were reserved. Although they remained empty the entire time we were there. I ordered a chai tea latte in a 16oz size and asked for it to come with my food. I should have left when it came in a 10oz mug (maybe 12?) well before my food arrived. They did only charge me $3 instead of $4. The chicken sandwich I had was pretty tasteless except for the basil. I had to forcibly cut the grilled chicken with a knife to eat it. It was so overcooked it was terrible. The fries were delicious though. They also don't have regular aioli sauce. Only spicy flavored ones. Awkward. Service was pretty slow. My non ice water came with ice. Too much to want to go back. Cute restaurant though. read more

Excellent place for any meal of the day or snack. Large seating with fast service. The ambience is casual and great for groups, kids and dates. We ordered biscuits and gravy and the red fannel hash. Both were delicious and we finished every single drop of food. The only feedback would be less salt as we did think it was a bit too salty for us. Serving size is average to large, we were definitely very full at the end of the meal which was a waste as we would have loved to try their desserts. The bill came in a cigar box and they give good mint chocolates at the end with the bill. Lovely! Much of their food is purchased through the local farms and local community coffee or wine folks. They had a art exhibition towards the end where the restrooms are and on Saturdays, like today, farmer market stands were being set up and you could see the action of the market through the windows. We were lucky to get a window seat. Lovely place with a rich history, we will definitely be back here for their lunch and desserts in the future. read more

Poor management. Went in for breakfast, were told it was going to be an hr wait even though there were plenty of open tables, one name ahead of us. I asked the hostess why such a long wait, she said they have a lot of reservations. Then asked if she can give other suggestions because we weren't familiar with the area-she said no... I've worked in restaurants & this is very poor management. Also we are a family of color-it's been a longtime since I've been stared down walking into a restaurant. This place has the best doughnuts I have ever had. They are indescribably delicious. Moist, sweet but not too sweet. Not even really like a regular doughnut at all. Anyways, amazing and we found out they have a restaurant in the U district on 25th called Fifty North and they make the same doughnuts. Only a dollar each which is much cheaper than the $20 ferry to Vashon to get them. Food is great too. Great staff and cool environment. read more

Was out on Vashon island last week and there aren't a ton of food options so I decided to give this place a try, in part just because of the creative name. The interior of the restaurant is nice an open, you can tell they really made an effort to keep things spacious instead of packing as many tables in as possible. They have a nice selection of coffee items and I was really pleased by my chai tea. For an appetizer we decided to try their "Greek tower", it certainly lives up to it's name, the thing was HUGE. The fellofal is made with chick-peas which may throw some people but it was nice and tasty. For entrees I had the crab-cakes while my girlfriend had the fish tacos. The crab-cakes aren't huge (not that you'd expect them to be) but they were very good, given the size of the appetizer I wasn't too worried about the portion but by itself you might still be hungry. The fish tacos were very good (and also fairly large), you could really taste the freshness. Both entrees came with salads consisting of nice fresh greens. Saw another table order dessert and it looked tasty, unfortunately neither of us had room after our meals. They also had a VERY impressive looking wine list. The breakfast menu also sounded really good. I look forward to trying it some day. On a final note our waitress was awesome, super friendly and very attentive. Great atmosphere and solid, good food. The owner keeps everything running like clockwork and the menu contains a little something for everyone. If you haven't had the chocolate cake, the mousse, or the banana cream pie (can you tell I have a sweet tooth?) you need to do so. Suprising good for breakfast as well. read more

I visited The Hardware Store in June of '10 on my last night of my Seattle vacation with my best friend. We were just killing time, decided to take the ferry, then quite randomly chose this place for dinner. Boy was it a Divine appointment, The atomosphere is very cute and there was little wait. I decided to be bold and go for the fish tacos. Why I decided on these, I'll never know. I'd never had fish tacos before and the only non-fried fish (these are grilled fish tacos) I like is salmon. My eyes fell in love first. I'm not sure if/how the lunch portion is different, but the dinner portion is HUGE. And as soon as I take a bite, my stomach is in love, too. Out of this world. The white wine I had with it was also spectacular. I'm definitely coming back next time I'm on the island. read more

Just hoping this review will be read by the staff member that monitors the presentation of the food to the customer. I have eaten at the Hardware Store probably once a week since it opened. I especially love the preparation of their fresh fish in season. But, on the night of May 28th, Wednesday night, I order the special salmon with shrimp, pork belly bacon over polenta for twenty-eight dollars. While the salmon and shrimp were delicious, the polenta was the constancy of glue. My partner said it looked like vomit. We did bring this to our server's attention and she smile and apologized. We are visiting from Texas, stopped in for dinner based on friends suggestion. Glad we did, delicious wedge salad w/ crab cake, very tasty blue cheese, not too blue. On a spontaneous trip to Vashon on a very rainy night, we happened upon this spot and checked Yelp for reviews. Sounded good so off we went. The wait staff were very welcoming and friendly. Since we were on the early side of the evening, there weren't many folks there but by the time we left, it was packed with people waiting. Since it was a chilly evening, I ordered a hot cider. It appeared to be sprinkled with cinnamon or nutmeg. I think it was actually wood shavings, not so appetizing. The waitress apologetically took it away and brought one sans shavings which was fine. We had burgers and they were quite tasty. The dessert was billed as a lemon tart with shortbread crust but was more like a traditional pie crust. Tasty but misrepresented, I am a stickler for truth in advertising. Very nice ambience. Would definitely return. read more

This is my Sunday favorite! As soon as I reach the ferry I feel like I'm on vacation. It's a $26 ferry ride (because we drive on) and totally worth every penny. All the food is amazing and I always feel like I've eaten a home cooked meal every time. I usually don't order dessert elsewhere but here it's impossible to resist the homemade apple pie. Husband and I were on the island yesterday evening and decided to go to The Hardware Store. We were seated immediately and ordered drinks. I got the green tea mojito and it was delicious! We ordered the parmesan truffle oil fries to start and loved them! So good. For dinner I ordered the pasta special, and my husband ordered the fried chicken. When our food was brought out...the guy said "do you folks need anything else" to which my husband said "well, we will need forks" (realizing we didn't have any silverware) and the guy says "enjoy!" lol. Guess he didn't hear us? My husband got up and asked the hostess and she gave us silverware. Our waitress was a little awkward though, she would come up to our table and stare at us for a few seconds before saying anything. Overall our experience was just fine, food was delicious! read more

what a wonderful place! it's pretty big and roomy inside, although they do have a lot of people that come to eat. the bartenders were super nice and friendly, which was really welcoming after walking from the port all the way there (4.6 miles). I ordered one of their burgers, and although it was really good, I do wish the actual beef patty was bigger, since the bread was much bigger than the patty was. that's really my only complaint, please make the beef patty bigger! fries were really good though. the beignets were really tasty, and totally topped off the meal. overall, a wonderful go to place, and I'll definitely be back again! read more

Why did we go even though the reviews are pretty bland here? Well, this was the ONLY place besides a sports bar serving breakfast on a weekend before 9am and we were too hungry to wait. The service was GREAT - incredibly attentive staff and really friendly - and the vibe is super chill, with great history attached. However the food was pretty bad. Omelet was bland and the sourdough was flavorless (how do you screw up toast?!), and my husband's biscuits & gravy he said was less than stellar. For the prices they charge they need to up their game. read more
