Worst experience when searching for a new handyman. I set aside an hour for the estimate and review of what I wanted, actually turned into two hours, but I was willing to invest that time to have a regular handyman going forward. After spending two hours with this guy, he ghosts me by never sending me the written price quote. After a week I had to ask for it. Then no follow-up about scheduling the work. So I reach out trying to schedule around my upcoming travel for work, offer a date range a month out, and no response again. This guy is truly unprofessional, and is neither "handy" nor a "gentleman." read more

Way overpriced and insists he knows more about what was installed in the house by the builder than the original owner of the house. Argued with me about it and it was ridiculous as I know what was in the house when I bought it new. Arrogant jerk and downright stupid. How does your wife make a living at her business? How much do they charge to be able to keep the doors open? Try calling an electrician for that small job. $135 to change a light switch for my Wife's business while I was away. Please note this is a 10 minute job max with a $10 part. As a return Customer, this is unacceptable and the general feeling is that we were taken advantage of. I generally do not post too much, and always give the other party a chance to make it right. I have to just start out by saying that the negative reviews here seem to be really off base. I'm not sure if the reviewers had some outrageous expectations or what the case was, but it doesn't reflect my experience with Mark. I found it really interesting about the "not taking water" comment because we had some great conversations about our kids, grandkids and family. So, nix that remark - Mark does take this seriously and also is VERY professional and personal. We did also receive the orchid, which I didn't realize was his "thing" until reading the other reviews; however it added that "personal" touch and sense that customer satisfaction and appreciation is what he's about. I pinged Mark last minute, on a Tuesday, to get a couple of shelves hung because I knew it would be quicker and overall less expensive than us trying to do it. In less than three hours, the shelves were hung, the wall patched and painted (old anchors had to be removed) and everything was back in it's place. The cost was less than I thought it would be. Secondly, his quote was reasonable and the final invoice for the work done was in line with the quote. Mark is a exceptionally nice gentleman. As first time home owners, my husband and I have tried our hand at a number of home improvement projects. But we still have several larger project we didn't feel up to tackling. After yelping handymen in our area, Mark's name came up and I gave him a call to come out a provide a quote to put in a new door, patch some wall and put in new molding. He arrived promptly, took a look at the project and provided a very reasonable quote. He even made himself available the next week to come out for our mult-day project, working around our time constraints. Beyond our initial discussion about the project, Mark took it upon himself to ensure everything was spot on. He had a challenge of matching molding, multiple paint colors and door style to the rest of the house and everything turned out great! Mark was very professional (wouldn't even accept a glass of water!), friendly and respectful. He was clearly conscious he was in someone's home and did everything he could to minimize his impact in the rest of the house. He even made sure to keep doors closed so our dog wouldn't run out. All said and done the projects look great and didn't exceed the original quoted price. I called Mark to fix some holes in my ceiling left by the plumbers when they fixed a leak. Mark showed up exactly when he said he would and began work right away. Not only did he fix the ceiling, he also found a small spot on my water line that was not found by a plumber and he repaired the pipe himself. He replaced the drywall and even did the texture without any problems. I think Mark did a great job, his prices were very reasonable, he is very professional and even brought an orchid flower for my wife. If I have anything that needs to be fixed or upgraded, I will be sure to give mark a call! If it was possible to give 6 stars, Marks would definitely deserve it! read more

As Mark Noakes parked out front of our condo, and walked towards the door, I thought, "This can't be my guy, he's carrying flowers!" Well, fancy that, I got those flowers as a first-time customer, and I haven't killed the orchids yet. The brighten my kitchen every day. I chose The Handy Gentleman to assist us in installing a few bars, a new tub spout in our bathrooms, and could not be more pleased with Mark and the job he did. His efficiency, reasonable rates and professionalism were to be applauded. He is also friendly, patient and kind -- which I found, being the chatterbox that I am, he worked while he explained things. I noticed he kept everything extremely clean as he worked, and the area never looked like someone was doing any work at all in there. Now, men may not care about that feature but I guarantee you most women, like myself, do. Being semi-retired or forced-to-retire, I have to try and clean my own home, and it's not up to standards that I am used to. I appreciated the cleanliness with which Mark worked, the carpets weren't stained afterwards, the bathroom tiles still clean. You could not go wrong in hiring this honest man. He is busy but still finds a way to work you in. I wanted some other things done, and he's contacted me twice about times and dates, never forgetting me. Had Mark fix a job I botched, and it he did it to perfection. This was his second job for us and I'm sure it won't be the last. How hard can it be to put some caulk in a crack between patio and house? Like music, it looks easy but takes practice and talent. With neither I ended up with a huge ugly mess. I tried to clean it up some and just made it worse. So we called Mark, because he did such a good job on our first project a few months ago. Mark has both experience and talent, so he knew what to do and did a beautiful job--part of it while we were not at home. After cleaning up my mess he thought we should paint the wall before caulking and we agreed it would look much better. But that meant he couldn't finish the job because the paint would be wet. We said we'd be happy to have him come back while we were gone and finish, and paid him in advance. He didn't disappoint. To the contrary, it looks better than I imagined. Thank you mark! read more

Mark deserves your business. He just finished a project for me at my condo installing a screen door. When I first got my no-cost in person estimate, I initially thought his rate was high (he gives you an estimate based on the job not by the hour, so you can better budget what you want to get done). I told my husband I wanted to do the door install myself but my husband resisted since every project I have done has taken me 2 weeks since I kind of sit on stuff. Anyhow, I don't regret hiring Mark and would seriously consider re-hiring him for any other house projects my husband does not want me to do or that just seem too complicated. Mark showed up around 7:45 AM which was early for me considering I got off work at 2 AM but was okay since I was off that day. In other words, I was half asleep while he was working. And right when he was finishing, I noticed that in my opinion, the door was installed inside out. In a practical way according to Mark, it made sense to install the screen door with the grids inside to prevent pets from destroying the screen (I have a dog). And most of the time, people hold open their screen door from the grids. In my experience from what I have seen, the grids on screen doors are installed to the outside for decorative purpoese (I'm female = not always seeing things practical but appearance wise). I offered Mark that he could reschedule to fix it if he wanted since I was aware he had other projects in the day. But he insisted that it get fixed since he was already here. So Mark uninstalled the screen door and then reinstalled it to my preference. I felt VERY GUILTY that I didn't notice this when he first installed the door but am thankful that he did not push me into leaving it as is. I thought he did a great job making the adjustments for the screen door to look square when my door frame was anything but square. I also appreciated his attention to detail and cleaning up after himself considering it was a rainy day. I would not hesitate to hire him again and would recommend him to anyone needing a handyman. read more

Late last year a car jumped the curb and destroyed our heavy-duty steel mailbox post. Rather than do the repair work myself I looked through the handyman reviews on Yelp and reached out to Mark based on the excellent reviews here. I contacted him via email on 12/19 and explained the situation and what we needed. He replied that same morning, apologizing that he was fully booked until early January. We exchanged a few more emails regarding a temporary solution (Mark had some good ideas) and I asked him to schedule us for a quote as soon as he could. January 14th I reached out to Mark, asking when he would be sending the quote. He replied that same day, indicating he would be happy to give us a quote and apologizing that he was fully booked for January and his first availability was February 7th. He said he would try to stop by the following week to take a look so he could give us a quote. February 18th I contacted Mark again to ask when we'd receive the quote. He said we were on his schedule for a quote on the 21st. I finally received a quote from Mark on February 21st, a quote which included a wood post rather than replacing the steel post as requested. He did give a couple options to give us cost-conscious choices, which I appreciated. We decided to go a different route and didn't end up using Mark for this work. I was disappointed with the experience, especially given all the great reviews posted by others. read more

Mark has done work for us over the last several years. He has done some excellent work in the past, and I would have rated the quality as 4.5. However, he has a long turn around in between his estimate and work completion. He hasn't gotten back to us since his estimate in early December. He asked if he could hold off on starting the job until after the holidays. Despite leaving several messages four weeks ago, he has not returned our calls. Excellent!! Mark was professional, respectful, timely and affordable. The work was done well. Our plumber had to cut through an existing wall to fix some piping. Mark had to cut drywall, cover it with texture and paint it. It looks PERFECT!!!!! He also replaced 4 overhead fan switches. He did this quickly and ended up fixing another ceiling fan for me. Since we had such a good experience previously in 2012 having Mark do the bathroom repair and floor, he was the first person I thought of now that we needed to do some exterior repair and painting on our house and garage. Normally my husband is not comfortable watching others work on our home as no one usually measures up to his standards. This can be very difficult for me trying to find someone reliable, affordable, and who does quality work. My husband is no longer able to do the projects himself but has high standards if he were doing it himself. No one has ever been able to measure up to these previously up until we had Mark do the last project. My husband visibly relaxed when discussing this latest project where we would be hiring Mark to do for us. The trim over our garage door was dry rotting and paint peeling. He did a great job replacing the moulding and painting around the garage door. It is a much better job than the original trim that was there. Our back roof was missing flashing which he replaced. Our front porch tile floor wasn't draining properly and causing water to back up when it rained which caused green algae to grow on the wall and the floor. Mark installed a new rain gutter to direct the water away from the porch and drilled a hole in the wall for the water to drain rather than stand after a rain. Mark pressure washed the floor and wall and ceiling of the porch which made the porch an attractive place to sit again. Most of the work we contracted to do was maintenance and painting on garage and house trim. But not on the original drawing board was the fountain in our front yard that is very pretty but hasn't worked since we bought our home 3 years ago. It didn't seem that important on the list of things to do but Mark was interested in why it didn't work and offered to trouble shoot to see if we could get it running at a reasonable price. We found that the original fountain didn't have the correct plug and wasn't a GFI which was unsafe. He installed a new GFI plug for the fountain, relocated the on-off switch where we didn't have to bend over and risk falling headfirst into the fountain as initially it was located down on the fountain. Now we can sit out on our clean front porch and listen to the wonderful sound of the water falling from the fountain into the small pool below. Mark's skills and knowledge are evident in everything he does. I noted that, though he does the handyman jobs, he has all the skill of a general contractor who understands the full scope of a job whether it be electrical, plumbing, framing,etc. Please forgive the length of this review but felt it would not do justice unless all the details are known. read more
