We really enjoyed our recent visit to The Gust Hauf on 4/13! We ordered popcorn, a beer and a loaded pizza that we requested anchovies to be added. Shortly after we placed our order, we learned that they just ran low on the anchovies. The awesome owner was driving to the store right then to get some anchovies for our pizza, which we thought was above and beyond his duty. It was sooo nice of the restaurant to take such great care of us!!! We will definitely be going back whenever we are in Glendive!!!!! read more

Pizza is one of God's greatest gifts to mankind. That's what I'm going to talk about here. You seem them three stars I put? A-OK. Here's the deal. Glendive, Montana ain't gonna make the top of any list. If you haven't so much as seen the exit sign off the freeway, you probably don't even know it exists. But, I reckon a traveler is occasionally going to stumble into this little town that is an oasis of motels and eateries. Cuz if you don't stop here, it's going to be a while, east or west, before you run into something else. Here's how I am compelled to explain Gust Hauf pizza. It is the "Best Worst Pizza in the US". Now, looking at that comment at face value ain't gonna elicit any confidence from the average diner patron. But, take it from me, you can hit this slice and walk away satisfied. The deal with the Gust Hauf is they have been around a long time and they have been doing pizza this way for decades. It's a thin, crispy crust with a conservative amount of toppings, unless you get some neophyte that likes to drop the salad bar on you. This ain't a New York slice. It most certainly isn't God's very own Chicago deep dish. But, it's not a common recipe and the do it pretty well. It's not gonna bust up your cabbage patch, either. A couple of people can go in and get pretty indulgent for a Jackson and a Hamilton. And the place don't look too bad. It's got a bar, TVs, a little casino. Kinda dark and western inside with the wooden floors. Bring your spurs, buckaroos! You can't go wrong. Don't get locked into that chain shop pizza. Open that mind and open the front door to Gust Hauf. They'll take care of you. Oh... and I gotta tell you. This is Glendive, Montana. You drive through town and you see broken hopes and dreams. When that wait staff makes it happen for you, you gotta make it happen for them. Throw that gratuity down! If you get lucky in the game room, let 'em have a taste. You didn't have to sit in the elements all day with grampa's rifle waiting for your dinner. A human being brought it to your table hot and ready. A person's gotta live, right? Help 'em live right. A very nice place to stop in Glendive. I had the pork chop sandwich. It was delicious. I also have the roasted potatoes, more along the line is JoJos. The table next to mine had onion rings that looked very good with very light batter. I will try those next time. read more

Came here for dinner and was underwhelmed. Saw that there were a lot of high ratings so wanted to give it a try. No sides are included on the sandwiches and adding anything costs (like lettuce, tomato, etc.) which I think is unfortunate. The nachos were all fake processed food and the rest of the food wasn't that good. Over priced by a lot too for what you get. Great food can make up for a lot. But this place doesn't have great food so lets talk about what needs improvement. Asked the waitress for a recommendation. She suggested the cheeseburger pizza. NO... not good. Not crispy or firm crust. Oily cheap cheese and unseasoned ground beef, yuck. The toppings just kind of slid off the dough. No i don't want a squeeze bottle of watered down ranch dressing to squirt on my pizza. The beer was cold and there was a nice selection, but when my glass emptied itself, it took 5 minutes for someone to fill it back up (so thirsty). This happened the following night at the bar as well. If I'm at the bar and there are two other patrons, it shouldn't take that long for you to notice my empty glass. Especially when someone tips as they go. I would think that you would want to get those beers flowing. Lots of TVs here and there was a nice selection of sports on all of the screens except the one above the bar. This was showing Gilmore girls or little house on the prairie or something. When I asked the bartendress if we might switch to the playoff game, she said "oh you will have to ask Cletus or Clyde over there to change it. I don't know how the remote works." Nope! I'm not going to ask another customer to change the channel for me. And how has none of the staff of 7 or 8 (including the owner) not noticed the one screen leaking estrogen all over the bar? It is kind of a captive audience in this town so I guess they don't have to try very hard here. But with the oil boom bringing in so many people, you can bet that competition is on the way. Pretty disappointed, overall. The Good: You can get a 1/2 sandwich for less than $5. The beer isn't any more expensive than the average place in Glendive. Newer TVs, if you're there to watch sports. The bad: The food is pretty bad. My meatball sub tasted like some of those ultra-cheap and fatty meatballs in a Sysco bag that they just microwaved. Then they put cold sauce and cold cheese on top, so some of it was hot, with other parts cold. My girlfriend had a tuna fish sandwich, also tasted like the lowest-line of Sysco product available. The taste of the beer was off, and I had one that I typically drink while in Eastern MT. It tastes like the bar hadn't cleaned their lines frequently enough. Bathrooms were dirty, with stuff stuck on the walls and ceilings. Wait staff was neither friendly or rude, just didn't seem real happy to be working there on a Monday afternoon. read more

I would venture to say that this is the second best food that you could find in Glendive. It does however have the best prices. You can get several sandwiches and meals for under $10 which is unheard of for this town. they're also open until 10pm most nights. The wait staff is great most days. There's always a touch of pride around because some version of family of the owner is always around the building making sure that things are running smoothly. They're all very courteous, responsive, and quick. The pizza here is by far and away some of the best that I've ever had. I'd personally recommend the buffalo chicken with a tall Beaver Creek "Gold" (local brew) beer to wash it down. If you're really looking to have a good time and get interactive with the locals, sit at the bar and start talking about anything under the sun to nobody in particular, and somebody will definitely talk back to you. read more

This is not the best pizza in MT; that can be found in Bozeman (MacKenzie River Pizza Co.). And while this may be the second best food that you can find in Glendive, as one reviewer suggests, that doesn't mean you'd necessarily want to eat the best food in Glendive, a town I'll be happy to never visit again. The service here was terrible. Had to wait for menus, even after those coming in after us; then seemed to put the waitress out when I asked her to describe the beer selection, which hadn't been included on the menu. Her answer came out in one long rushing word: "BudBudLightMillerCoorsCoorsLight" -- which was fine until she reached the portion of the menu I was actually interested in, the local micro-brews with which I wasn't familiar. Onto the food: The pizza brought to mind the pizza of the seventies. Tasted kind of doughy and undercooked, with toppings that were the culinary equivalent of Sysco. My wife's taco salad was no better. It came without the bed of broken tortilla chips (how do you forget the taco in a taco salad?) and when she sent it back, it was returned to to her with the crushed chips sprinkled on top of her salad. Not that I'm a stickler for presentation, but would you serve a hamburger with two halves of a bun stacked on top of a hamburger patty? Speaking of which: the ground beef in the taco salad smelled off. Was it because of the heatwave? At least the beer was cold and good. If I remembered its name, I'd recommend it, but I don't. I said "That one" when I ordered because I couldn't keep up. Pay at the counter, by the way. Don't wait for the waitress to pick up your check. I did, if only because that's what you do at restaurants unless you're told otherwise, and I waited and waited and waited, until finally I went to the bar thinking I'd pay there. read more

Good pizza & great beer! As others have written, the place looks dark & iffy, but once inside it's clearly a welcoming hole-in-the-wall. Our waitress provided great service, suggesting two excellent, local Beaver Creek Brewery beers. We had five different meals. Our food was typical, inexpensive bar / eatery food with good-sized portions. The pizza was definitely the right choice. I'd go back for the beer, pizza, & good service. read more

Onion rings were great. Pizza was fine, but far from true greatness - No better than pizza hut other than the creative topping combinations they offer. Staff was generally nice and somewhat attentive. But my rating here is mostly because the place was filthy and ill-maintained. I usually appreciate restaurants that have an open kitchen because it lets them show off sparkling stainless steel hoods and pristine food handling surfaces, plus their clean, professional staff. This was the exact opposite. The big cutting board that served as the pizza prep area was darkened by many years of food stains. The guy at the grill was wearing a filthy shirt that was so covered with grease stains that I couldn't figure the original color of his shirt until he turned around and I saw his back. If that's how clean he keeps himself, how does he treat the food he serves up? The bar itself was dirty and the diner next to me had to beg the bartender to clean an old dried fluid of some sort off the spot where he was parked. The sliding glass doors to the cooler where they keep the beer mugs were filthy and falling off their tracks. And the Formica in front of them was completely separated from the board underneath. What bugs live under there??? With some updates, a thorough cleaning, staff training in hygiene, and better pizza dough, this place has great potential. read more

THIS PLACE HAS THE BEST PIZZA!!! I now live in Seattle, WA and I have not found a place that makes pizza the way that they do here. My favorite pizza is the sauerkraut Canadian Bacon. The staff is is friendly and with great food what can you complain about. The cost is fantastic for everyone. I would recommend this place to EVERYONE and I WILL be back in when I visit Glendive again. read more

The food is great, and they have a decent selection of beers on draft, many of which are brewed locally. Service is lacking, but the food and the beer keep you happy enough to not mind waiting on the servers. The pretzels are only $3, and the pizza is filling! Will definitely be back. read more

To whom it may concern, A 6:30 we placed an order for a large pizza from your restaurant by 7:45 we where still waiting. The people that came in a half an hour after we arrived and ordered where served and ate long before we where served. In fact we did not receive our Pizza until we had payed our bill and asked for out pizza to go. Your restaurant ruined what would have been our date night. We thought it would be "special" to go to your restaurant. It was so upsetting it ruined our whole evening! The fact that the waiter placed our order in again after we paid and where more than ready to leave. That the service person tried to lay blame on the cooks! The Gust Hauf restaurant had some of the best Pizza I've ever had, they had a bunch of TVs on with sports which I prefer. The drinks came out right away, the server was super nice & friendly. My party also got some pickle fries which were amazing! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because there was a bit of a wait getting the pizza but nothing insanely long. All in all I would definitely recommend to someone going to Glendive to go to the Gust Hauf. read more

I want to give the service here a 5 star rating. So let me preface this review by saying that. I ordered the Philly Cheese steak W fries and a Coke. I asked to have the mushrooms held and my waitress forgot (very honest mistake). When she arrived at my table she instantly knew that she had forgot to relay the message to the cooks. And offered to have it remade. I was slightly pressed for time so opted to just have the sandwich as it was prepared. Then she said: "so I feel badly about forgetting, I want to discount your meal, sorry again." I could tell she was experienced and very accommodating. Now onto the food. It was decent. I'd say good not great. I asked for some horse radish and that stuff was radioactive it was so strong. She even warned me about its potency. The sandwich was average, cheese and veggies were soft and the Kaiser roll or bun was good. The meat was below average. But overall decent sandwich. I wish I had more memorable waitresses like this one I had here, and won't soon forget her assertiveness, the sandwich however was certainly less than memorable. read more

A bit dark and scary, but I like that type of place. Loved that they had a good selection of craft beer. The waitresses didn't know anything about them. The pizza was huge and loaded with toppings for the price. It came out fast and tasted OK. Staff seemed young, moody and uninterested. The reviews stating that this is the best in Montana are certainly made by employees or owners. The food was acceptable: nothing special, but not bad. We had a pizza on a Saturday night. The place was fairly busy, but there were plenty of empty tables. The crust was a little doughy in the middle and limp everywhere else. The ingredients were finely cut and chopped (most likely purchased that way) and mostly undistinguishable from each other. The overall taste was rather bland, but acceptable. There were a variety of beers on tap, some local microbrews and also the regular national brands. This is basically a sports bar that sells food, so expect a bunch of TV's with whoever is playing at the moment to be on. Price was OK, service was OK. This is about what to expect in small town Montana, unless you go out of your way to look for something special. read more

I just had my first meal at Gust Hauf, it is great Family restaurant and sport bar too. Good parking. I had the Philly Cheese Steak, it is excellent. I eaten some good Philly Cheeseteak, the only one better is the Cheesesteak specialist house in Walnut Creek, California if even still open back in the 1990's , they add jalapenos. read more

I gave this place one star, not because the pizza isn't good because it is good pizza. The lady on the phone who took our order has zero people skills. She started by answering the phone by saying "Just a minute, I'm taking another order", um ok. My husband has her on speaker phone so when she gets back to us she asks what is our order, my husband starts to give it to her, and she tells him to give her a second cause she isn't ready. Then when she is ready my husband says we would like a thin crust large.. she snaps at him "I cant hear you, I literally cant hear you, you are breaking up" Ok, he takes it off speaker, we place our order one thin crust large Half Hawaiian with bacon, half combo and one medium chicken club (very tasty BTW). we wait the 15 minutes, hubby goes to get. He gets there and she tells him that one of the pizzas didn't get made. ok, he waits. The lady walks out with two mediums, he ask if one of them is a large, she says you didn't order large (yes, speaker phone) so they make a small to make up the difference so hubby waits even more. When The pizzas arrive home I ask hey where is the pineapple. Yep, she messed it up again! The best part is that when she brought the pizzas out to him the second time she slammed them on the counter and said "take them". Now this lady may have been having a bad day, I don't know, but she sure made my husband a bear when we had a nice evening planned with pizza and a movie. This restaurant was awesome! Our waitress had a party of thirty behind us but she gave us her full attention. She had great recommendations and she was very sweet. It is a little dark, but it's all part of the wood paneled experience. I ordered potato soup. It was very good. The rest of my party ordered a burger, a brat sandwich, and brisket. They all really enjoyed their meals. The bread was homemade and it all was very good. I definitely recommend The Gust Hauf!! read more
