The game day specials were awesome. The food and service were outstanding. It was the highlight of my day.

While this seems like it should have a German theme, don't be fooled by the name. It's a local beer and pizza joint. Very family friendly and full of people enjoying dinner, The Gust Hauf has a full beer lineup and lots of pizza options. They have other items on the menu but we were just interested in pizza. We got our usual pepperoni and black olive pizza. The 12 inch was perfect to split. The thin crust was delicious. With several beer options and being new to the area, I had to try a local beer and opted for the stout. Great choice. Our server was excellent. We asked her about the name and she told us they have been around since the 1960's! Whaaaaat? The name has just been passed down through owners. Drove 4 hours because their brisket sandwich looked delicious online, for a lunch date with my husband. Great little dive for a great lunch date. Service was fast and friendly. Food was amazing. I had the brisket sandwich and a side of chive fries for $13. Couldn't really eat too many fries the portions were huge. Tall beers are 24oz and only $8 for good craft regional selections. Fill a growler to go for $11 if you bring your own, or $19 for one of theirs. Fun and lively atmosphere with lots of local flavor. This place is a small town bar. I just wanted a pizza for the night. Pizza Hut had a 60 minute wait time. Ugh. I found this place on Yelp. I drove over here and grabbed a seat at its small bar. It took a couple of minutes to get service. First and foremost, I asked how long it would take to get a pizza. The waitress said 20 minutes, I ordered a pie and grabbed a beer. It took about 20 minutes to get the pizza and it took me 25 minutes to finish my beer. Perfect! Wrong, I get the pizza back to the hotel. An 8 minute drive total and the pizza was cool and barely warm. Was disappointed and it was the first time I had to use the Porto-potty on the job site the next day. Ugh... read more

The staff was great...we had our dog bit found space out that the patio was closed. I asked if we could get food to go and eat on their patio because we did not want to eat in our hotel room. They did allow us on the patio after I pleaded which was very nice of them going forward I would not bring your dog here because the patio is not open. Glendive, MT was a halfway point for us on our road trip. We had high hopes for this place. I just thought the food was okay. It definitely was not crowded and the service was great which is why I give it 4 stars. Just basic fried food for a decent price. My husband liked his burger but that's about all he would say about it. They had a decent beer selection though! The building is old and kind of historic looking. I found it extremely odd that they had a weird fireplace in the middle of the dining area with carpet all around it. Strange. I would eat here again but only if I happen to be in town. Awesome bartenders and waitresses salad bar included with your meal which includes soup as well their fish and chips was delicious so with their Mexican appetizer. There's no hard liquor so be aware so it's only beer siders and hard seltzer but doesn't take away from the nice environment the food is delicious. read more

Stayed overnight in Glendive on a road trip, very pretty country, you can tell that the town has a lot of history and continues to play a key roll in our country's rail infrastructure. Found our way here for dinner. I've been to a number of small towns across Montana and they all seem to have a place that is family oriented serving pizza, wings, chicken, nachos, usually at least one steak option and a few entrees. The Gust Hauf throws in a solid salad bar (for the size of restaurant) with a soup option. The also have beer and wine (no liquor) and prices are quite reasonable. The daughter and I shared a 4 piece chicken dinner, had an extra salad, and a couple of beers and with tip were out the door for around $30.00. Chicken was very good, you can tell it was brined and battered in house, and the coating had a sweetness that I can't quite place, but was very good. Table condiments included a bottle of hot honey. Servers were friendly and attentive and given how busy they were, we got our food very quickly. Driving through Montana and needed a family stop. To be a bit honest I was apprehensive about the name and weird beer stein sign. Glad we went anyway. Good pizza, had to be a yeast home made crust, lots of toppings. Me n wife had a bacon cheeseburger, best one I've had in some time, our in laws had a Philly, not my jam but they loved it. Kids had a pepperoni and Hawaiian. Overall I'd say heavy toppings were excellent pickles on bacon cheeseburger were phenomenal, the crust however was the takeaway, it had a crispy but wasn't hard and as I mentioned I felt a taste of yeast which I'm equating to a homemade and not a Sysco or delivered frozen thaw crust. What a great place. First of all, Thursday is $2.00 pint night. And they have numerous micro brews and domestic beers. My husband really enjoyed numerous pints while I was the designated driver. I order fried chicken and got a choice of sides which I ordered onion rings and it came with salad bar. My husband ordered a philly and his chosen side was tator tots which are called gems. Very good food and I wish we would've been more hungry to enjoy and order more! We stopped here on a random Sunday night and sat in the bar, which had the Sunday Night Football game on its many TVs. [Tangent: The name 'Gust Hauf' is still a mystery to me: with the neon beer stein out front, it appears to be German, but Gust Hauf doesn't really mean anything in German. It's similar to another word, Gasthof, so I wonder if it was a typo or if it's just unrelated? In any case, this place has been around since the 1960s, and it's more of a restaurant and sports bar than anything resembling a German place. Also, contrary to their neon sign, they do not make beer pizza. ;-)] They have roughly 16 tap beers at any time (four groups of four taps, if my math and counting and memory are correct), including at least 4 from nearby Wibaux's Beaver Creek Brewery. We tried their stout and were not disappointed! We had a couple of apps: breaded cauliflower bites and broasted potatoes. Both were good, but the potatoes stole the show: the broasting brings out the best in them: crispy and flaky outside, soft and steamy on the inside. We ordered the small portions, but they were bigger than expected. Prices are very good as well: roughly $4 for a craft pint and apps at under $5 for the 'small' size made us glad that we decided to drop in! The bartenders were doing double duty as bartenders and servers, but they were working hard, while still being friendly and patient. If you're rolling into Glendive and never been here before drive down off the freeway away from those jenky spots by the exit and enjoy good food. We stayed in Glendive for 5 days and in a town this size it can difficult to find a good spot or one that is even open. We ate at all those places listed in the top 5 and we found that 2 are the best. GUST HAUF's is our number 1. Good beer, good food, good atmosphere, and good service. We ate there 3 times and were never disappointed. Had the fried chicken , the pizza , and folks, their bread used on sandwiches is soft and fresh soooo good. We don't have anything negative to say. I was skeptical about this place because the few negative reviews were, well, negative. Also, being from Southern California, my standard for service is rather high. Despite what you may read about Gust Hauf, it is an amazing establishment. There is a substantial demand on Gust Hauf's servers and cooks. (Good help is hard to find around here). The employees here work incredibly hard to keep up with the pace and keep customers satisfied. I think that is all that is necessary to review the service. As for the food, I was pleasantly surprised. I know successful pizza place owners and while I don't know this one, I can say they know what makes a good pizza. I won't say it's the best pizza I've ever had, but i wouldn't say that about any pizza place, and it's the best in the region thus far. The beer is also very good; whatever your taste, they have at least two that will suit you. If you want a homemade pizza, burger, or craft beer, just stop in at the Gust Hauf. Rude behavior gets you nowhere. Your business hours are listed as being open until 11pm on a Saturday night. At 9:45pm *running* to the door to lock it in front of us and snapping "we're closing early" is a pretty piss poor business practice. Having a second employee come over to follow up with equally rude behavior is just as "enjoyable".... you're off the interstate ffs... you're listed as open... it's a Saturday night. It's one thing to close early due to slow service, but you had people still in there! Regardless... there are better ways to handle things. Normally I wouldn't bother with a poor review, except this is the 2nd time we've experienced rude behavior here, and now after a 500 mile drive, I'm rather hangry.
