The Grind was like a beacon of light when I spotted it. I was super happy to see this coffee shop while walking around downtown Morgantown, because I really needed a boost, and this place had what I was desperately in need of: caffeine! It was well past 2 o'clock, and I try not to drink coffee after 11ish-o'clock, because it usually messes with my sleep. But I remembered the words of a man much wiser than me who once said, "I never sleep, 'cause sleep is the cousin of death," so I felt like a lil' iced coffee would actually be beneficial, in this case. No regrets. The iced coffee was great! I always forget about iced coffee when I'm at a coffee shop, because I just usually order a hot black coffee. I'm so stuck in my ways, sometimes! But iced coffee was a good choice in this situation, and it came with a little vanilla cream, which was unexpected but a nice indulgence. The Grind is located right across the street from West Virginia University. It was packed when I visited, and I imagine it is almost always packed, because of its location. But the people who work here are very efficient and friendly, and my iced coffee was ready lickety-split. I got my coffee to go, but there are some tables inside the coffee shop to sit and relax, if you wanted to. One of my favorite things about The Grind is that they have a confession box in the restroom. I left a little confession in the box, because it promised that the box was "a safe place to share what you can never tell a soul," and I felt that I could trust this random coffee shop in West Virginia with my whole heart. I left my confession there, and took my iced coffee with me and went on my way. read more

Not only that but with how busy they were the even had the time to do some art with the frothed milk. The maple latte was BOMB. We got breakfast sandwiches on bagels and they were stacked and perfect cooked eggs with melted cheese right when you pull it apart. Not only that but they are affordable. I came here with my mama on the last day of my visit in Morgantown. One of my sisters said The Grind was her favorite place for coffee/espresso in town and she suggested the maple latte. I ordered an iced maple latte, half sweet and my mom ordered a coffee. The maple latte was amazing. I loved the flavors and I want to come back for another! To eat we each ordered something different, one on the Kaiser roll and the other on a bagel, and shared since they cut them in half. Everything was hot, fresh, and delicious. Plus you can enjoy while you sit at the window and people watch. I used the bathroom and was pleasantly surprised by a "confessions box". The Grind, daily! This place is hidden in plain sight and of all the times I've been in WVU I've never been here or even seen it. Goes to show some of the best places are right in front of you...who knew! The grind has an amazing selection of coffee and great sandwiches for everyone taste. Me and my friend had gone here for a morning meeting and both has made our sandwiches (mine is below). I had an egg, ham, cheese, peppers between an everything bagel . It was so filling despite what seemed small (I like to eat). The Russian was the coffee that I had, which was a cold mixture of coffee and a maple syrup (literally best cold coffee I've ever flipping had!) This place is awesome and definitely a must go if you're in the area and want to grab some fire coffee and a great snack with friends. This is a great little coffee shop in downtown Morgantown! The place has a hipster feel but is a great place to bring a laptop and get some work done. My favorite is the maple latte with dark roast, it is not overly sweet with the maple syrup but a great way to start the morning. I have not had a chance to try their baked goodies because of you go later in the day they are all out. But the scone and muffin flavors sound delicious. My go to is usually a bacon egg and cheese on the delicious rolls or the homemade bagels. But once again if you go too late they may run out of bagels. They also allow pets! Usually my dog and I will walk down to the grind and sit outside and enjoy our delicious treats. They always have dog treats waiting inside. read more

Was in town for New Student Orientation. Read the reviews and wanted to check this place out because it seemed like a legit coffee house. I ordered a cappuccino and bacon, egg and cheese bagel on a jalapeño bagel. My wife ordered a vanilla latte and a bacon, egg and cheese on a regular bagel. The coffee's were OUTSTANDING!!!! We like dark roast and boy did they nail it! In addition, the froth on the cappuccino was thick and creamy. Both my wife and I gave the coffee 10 stars! The bagels came out fresh and hot, I cannot say enough about how good the jalapeño bagel was. We stopped in later and asked the staff to make some frozen Frappuccino style drinks since it was hot out. While not on the menu, the young man behind the counter was more then accommodating. Once again, the coffee was excellent. This is hands down the best small coffee shop I've encountered from Maryland to WV! If you're in Morgantown, do yourself a favor a skip the chain coffee joint and go get you some coffee from The Grind! read more

Came here for a breakfast sandwich. Ordered a bacon egg and cheese on a jalepeno cheddar bagel. The bagel is essentially a plain bagel and they shove 10 jalepeno rings in the center and then melt some cheese on top. So you get 2 bites that are all jalapeno when you get to the center. Also the first 3 or 4 bites I had no bacon. I finally opened the sandwich to see if there was actually bacon on it. As you can see in my picture there was 1 piece of bacon cut in half and also set in the center of the bagel. Flavor wise the sandwich was good but it could have been better if the bacon was evenly distributed and the bagel didnt just have a huge chunk of peppers in the center. I'll try this place again but order something different. read more

I tried to go here once... but the staff was so rude to me and my roommate that we left immediately. I *checked the hours* before opening the door, walked in, and started looking at the menu and the way the place was decorated. An employee said something that I didn't catch, so I said that I was just looking around, not ready to order. There were also other customers seated, still enjoying their coffee and whatnot. Then, the same employee goes "Did you hear me?! The kitchen is CLOSING!" I thought that maybe they were done serving food for the day, but we could still get coffee since they weren't closing yet, so I said okay. Maybe I was wrong, idk, but that employee said something rude that basically meant they wanted us to leave, so we turned around and walked out. If they would have just kindly said "Sorry, we're done serving customers for the day" I would have said "that's okay, have a good day" and probably tried again soon after. The Daily Grind's the place, it's as simple as that. With Rick as the new owner, you are sure to have a great visit to this gem. The menu's nothing fancy, but what they do, they do well. Sandwiches are $5.75 and include chips and a pickle. My personal favorites are the Poor Boy and the Dagwood, but there are a few other options to choose from. Another tip: you can request the sandwich on either their local-baked bread or on bagel (both are great options). Though under new ownership, the substance and spirit of the original "Jay's Daily Grind" has been maintained. Even the decor, for the main part, has carried on in honorary tradition. Over the 2013 winter break, they updated the dining area with new tables, chairs, and a really helpful power strip along the window seats (a clutch addition for students looking to get some work done). That's the Daily Grind in a nutshell: doing what they can to welcome you, feed you, caffeinate you, and motivate you. An hour here is good for the soul. Did I mention the coffee? These guys turn out consistently fantastic lattes, cappuccinos, and just regular ol' joe. When I first moved to Morgantown, I was a little put off by the fact that in the afternoon, they sometimes served lukewarm coffee. However, after that initial experience or two, it never happened again. This is a local institution, a staple of the community, and the best coffee you're going to get anywhere in Morgantown.
