A MANTECA FAVORITE! AMAZING TACOS, FAST SERVICE, AND THAT SHRIMP!…read more El Mayita Tacos y Birria is another one of those local spots that deserves recognition! Back when I worked for the City of Manteca, this was one of my regular places to stop for a delicious meal. And let me tell you, it was always worth the visit! One thing I absolutely loved about this place was the variety. I'm the type of person who enjoys trying just about everything on the menu, and that's exactly what I did here! From carne asada, tripa, cabeza, and different cuts of meat to their seafood options, I was constantly trying something new. BUT THE SHRIMP?! ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Seriously, their shrimp is one of my personal favorites. If you're someone who enjoys seafood tacos, I definitely recommend giving it a try! Another thing I appreciate is how quickly they prepare the food. When you're working and don't have all day to sit around waiting for lunch, fast service makes a huge difference. They consistently delivered delicious food without making you wait forever. Their drinks are also delicious and definitely on the sweeter side, which I personally enjoy! I also love seeing familiar faces behind the counter. During my visits, it was usually the same hardworking employees, and there's something special about a local restaurant where you recognize the people preparing and serving your food. Manteca has some incredible little food spots, and El Mayita is absolutely one of them. I believe the people behind this location may also be connected to taco trucks in neighboring cities, including Stockton, although I'm not entirely sure. Either way, I have a lot of appreciation for the work that goes into serving our community. If you're around Manteca and craving some delicious Mexican food, do yourself a favor and check this place out. Don't be afraid to try different meats, either! That's half the fun! Delicious food, great variety, quick service, and hardworking people. A true local favorite! Highly recommended!

Bean dip: 5/5 -- I could come here just for this! Warm refried beans with crema, queso fresco, and salsa verde. Chips & Salsa: 5/5 -- Some of the chips are nice and puffy, which is a fun and different texture as you go through the basket. I always ask for extra salsa to eat with my meal! Service: Our servers have always been friendly and attentive! Ambiance: They play a mix of different Latin music, and they don't blast it through the speakers. There was one group of customers. I was greeted with a wonderful smile and sat near the window. Their mocajete had a choice of steak, chicken and/or shrimp. I chose steak and shrimp. I've never had mocajete before and I was amazed how large the bowl that it came in. It was hot and steaming. It came and the flavors had a nice stewed tomato broth. Steak was seared, shrimp cooked nicely, and the green onions had a good seared from the fajita hot big bowl. I don't know how to compare this since this was my first tome to try this. But, I liked it.

The restaurant is seated to the back of the parking lot with a liquor store to the right. You know, you've found the place with their large grill on the corner of the lot. The Hubbs had stopped in previously after going to the liquor store next-door for an energy drink and had gotten a mini burrito which he felt had homemade flavor and great size to eat while driving to work. When you walk in your hit with a bunch of mini boards and behind that is an open kitchen, where two ladies were doing prep and cooking. We decided to get a sampling of their food and got a chili verde sope, shrimp & al pastor tacos, Quesabirria tacos and a mini carne asada burrito. The food is all made to order and had a fresh homemade taste to it. Surprisingly the mini burrito which I thought would be basic had a great taste and size. The salsa bar has several options and all the items were also very fresh. The food has a homemade quality, they're not skimpy with the toppings, and the price won't break the bank.

Tacos were also good and flavorful. Overall great place for Mexican food. For sure would come back and try their ribs or other meats.

But the recent changes to the Monday/Wednesday happy hour tacos caught me off guard. The deal now requires everyone at the table to buy alcohol, not just one person -- and the tacos themselves have gotten smaller, too. I don't really have a problem with the alcohol policy itself; that's pretty standard for happy hour. What got me was the service. I sat at the bar for nearly 20 minutes and the bartender ignored me the whole time -- no greeting, no heads-up about the new policy, nothing. Had someone just told me, I would've sat in the dining room from the start. No signage, no note on the menu, no acknowledgment at the bar. All around, a disappointing experience. I'll probably still be back -- back to my usual fajita salad -- but good things can't last forever, I guess.
