First off, I called ahead asking some questions about getting art framed. So when I came into this place on Saturday afternoon I found two female workers, one being the owner working with customers on their own projects. There's enough room to move around and look at the pieces of the art that was already framed. I waited for my turn to work with Sandy the owner who helped me with the five pieces I brought in to have framed. She was patient and had good suggestions on what to do with my custom art from Juli Adams that I had bought at the Renegade Craft fair many years ago. Plus another piece that I inherited from a friend that was on canvas. She opened up two anime art pieces in tubes that my husband gave me to have framed and mounted. Sandy put them up with magnets on the board so I could see what we're working with. The prices were very fair, and I'm really glad I didn't go to Michael's today and went to support this small female owner business. If I was in the market to have a sentimental picture framed, I will definitely bring it here. Excited to get my art back in 1 week. I went in to get a small painting custom framed. I had gotten a couple quotes on custom sized prints in the past at other stores like Michael's and Hobby Lobby and was expecting to pay at least $75 for the cheapest frames based on those quotes. I was surprised that for the size painting, the cheapest quote was $55 and even less with a 30% off coupon! Sandy helped me look for a few different frames. I found a great brown frame that looked weathered to fit the country-like painting of a cow I brought in. It was ready after about a week. When I picked it up, I brought in two more prints to be custom framed because the prices seem pretty good. There are multiple framed displays with objects instead of prints that caught my eye. Really cute displays that make great gifts. So, open your imagination because Sandy can create awesome works if you have little trinkets or any small objects that you want to display in glass instead of on a shelf. One held each object between panes of glass that had depth; really cool! They also have thousands of prints on their website & quite a few in store for sale. I loved the The Great Frame Up in Niles! I needed to price out custom framing of a sports poster that was approximately 32 x 44. They did have the special type of reflective control glass I like to use, so that was good. I went in to meet the owner, Sandy, with a quote in hand from another local frame shop franchise. We picked out a wood frame that complemented the image on the poster and would go with the exposed brick wall of a new bar/restaurant, where it was going to serve as a centerpiece. Sandy beat the competition by nearly $400. Can you be any less friendly, I think it's not possible. I needed to find some hooks, I thought this place may sell them. So I walked in, and said hello... My first impression is that I was interrupting something. Perhaps she was framing something, whatever was going on I felt like I shouldn't have of walked in. So I awkwardly ask about the hooks, no dice I was told no we don't sell them, you need to go to a hardware store. I get it, it's not something you normally sell, however if you were being smart you could have sold me a few and I would have thought, how nice of you to help, I'll bring you some stuff to frame for me. It's called going the extra mile, well maybe just the extra inch actually. As someone that owns a business, we've done little things to help out, some of these little gestures have ended up building wonderful customer relationships, and some not. We recently repainted our family room and removed all our custom framed family photos from the walls, I did not want to remove the photos and dispose of the frames and glass. I contacted The Great Frame Up in Niles, a vendor who I have used since the 1980's. The owner was willing to remove my photos, recycle the glass and donate the frames. I actually give The Great Frame Up in Niles, IL, no stars! I have been using The Great Frame Up stores in the Chicago area since 1978. At that time, you actually built your own frames and assembled them completely. I am an artist and need to get the most economical custom frames in order to make a profit. All of the The Great Frames Up I have used over the years have been very accommodating and helpful except for this one. I was already in Park Ridge and this one was convenient at the time with a parking lot. When you walk in, you get no greeting or smile from the owner. She gives you a scowl, takes her sweet time in addressing you at all and gives you the feeling you are disturbing her! She is curt, cold and should not have a profession dealing with the public. You cannot do ANYTHING yourself at this store. They do all of the cutting of materials and ALL of the assembly and charge mightily for it! I immediately walked out and went to the location in Northbrook, 601 Skokie Blvd.,IL. Joe, the owner, introduced me to Paul who helped me enormously. I was allowed to bring in "store bought frames" and have then cut glass and mats for me and I could do all of the assembly for a shop fee of $4.00 a frame, which included hangers, wires and backing. This was more like it. I framed about 10 pieces for an art show and spent nearly $1,000. It would have cost me at least 3 times that at the Niles store and it would have taken weeks to get all of the work done. The Niles store should not be allowed to carry the name of The Great Frame Up, as it is not in the tradition of what the chain was set up to do, which is to let people do a lot of the work themselves to save on the cost. To me, this location is just a traditional "rip off" custom frame shop that takes forever to deliver and gouges the public by using The Great Frame Up name to get them in the door. read more
