We've been coming here for years to have artwork framed. Their attention to detail and the way that they spend enough time with the client is something to be cherished. It was a bit of a disappointment to see that they have been bought out by Masterpiece, but they have retained a lot of the employees from goods so the quality remains similar. They have a lot of custom frame samples from which to select. The prices are high but it is worth the personalized attention and the quality of the framing. read more

About a week before Christmas, I came in with a photo of my husband's family. I was hoping to have it by Christmas but did not expect it because it was so late in the game. They said they would try to get it before Christmas but could not guarantee it. I said, "of course, I understand." So, what happened? They got it to me by December 23, 2022. During the pre-service of discussing how the photo should be put together, down to the smallest detail, I was pleased with the suggestions, AND I was more pleased with the result. Overall, the proficient staff knew what they were doing, had terrific suggestions for the matting, and the frame and the service were wonderful. I will not recommend this store to anyone after what happened to me the one time I came here. I went in with a standard sized poster and asked them for the cheapest frame they had. I explained that I cannot afford to have it custom-framed, and was hoping to get a cheap poster frame to approximately fit it. There were two employees working when I walked in. They played through a very elaborate and almost overdone performance of "No, no, we have absolutely no frames that would fit this poster..let us help you out with custom options", and one took me to the other room and calculated that the cheapest deal they had for me would be about a hundred bucks. This was far too expensive for me, and I went back to look through their diy frames..and sure enough, they had one for 20$ or so that fit my standard poster EXACTLY. I am not exaggerating, it was an exact fit, a standard frame for a standard poster. It was ridiculous. In conclusion, either these people shouldn't be professional framers because they cannot even identify the standard poster sizes (unlikely), or they flat out lie to customers about their options and screw them over in order to make more money through custom framing (more likely). Quite disappointing. I still walk by this store every day, but I'd rather use thumbtacks for my posters than return to Good's. read more

Let me first say that the framing jobs that GOE has done for me have been perfect (5 stars), but I think that the service leaves a little something to be desired. I went in with my husband a few weeks ago to have our Ketubah framed. We really didn't know what we were looking for in terms of frames, so we were a bit all over the place at the beginning (our fault). The salesperson did a nice job of aiding us with frames, but when we asked why we weren't picking a mat first she responded that it just isn't the way she works. However, after 45 mins to an hour of looking at frames and only narrowing it down slightly, I requested that we look at the mats because the color choice of the mat should be easier to narrow down and that will directly effect the frame choices. After we chose our mats we were going back and forth for another 30 minutes about frames and it wasn't until another salesperson came over and said, "let's price these choices out, just so you know what you're dealing with..." that we realized that one of the frames that we were looking at (and leaning towards) was over 1400 JUST FOR THE FRAME. I feel like the salepeople should do a better job of asking what your price range is before you go in and get your heart set on a particular piece. Sure, I could have said, "we're not looking to spend more than X", but when they see us picking out 1400 frames and 500 frames, they might suggest that there's a significant price difference or ask us what we're going for or, at a minimum, tell us which brands of frames are going to be very expensive. Like I said, the framing that I've done here both to prep the Ketubah (plastic overlay with window for signing) and the actual framing have been flawless and I would definitely go back... this time I would just make sure that the salesperson knew my budget before we get too far into the process. That said, I can't say that I won't try another framing place before I go back to GOE, only because I think they're really expensive. But they do have a wonderful selection and it's worth a stop in. But look at their mats FIRST because the color definitely will impact your frame choice :). read more

Why does one go to a frame store? It's a question that I didn't really know the answer to before coming to Good's, and find myself still not knowing after leaving? I'll walk you through my thoughts: 1. Does one go to a frame store to be assumed to be an expert on framing, given the level of detail (none) that an expert would need to accomplish a job? 2. Does one go to a frame store to spend hundreds of dollars on fancy glass that I clearly don't need but don't know better than to say no to? 3. Does one go to a frame store to leave having to do literally everything except apparently cut some $30 pieces of tag board yourself? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, then the problem with Good's lies with me, not them. Assuming it's not, though, my recent experience at Good's was the worst $500 dollars I have ever spent and I will never, ever go back. read more

This is my favorite art supply store in Evanston - in a desperate attempt to finish up my programs and table name cards, I came here and received amazing customer service and they give you a loyalty card for 10% off for being in education - student, teacher or administration. Their selection is pretty varied and has three sections - one section just on paper, another on art supplies, and the last one on frames. Goods of Evanston has cut down a lot on their art supplies, and they are focusing mostly on framing now. I came here to get my college degree framed, and I found an excellent selection that fit my budget, with a very well informed, professional, and friendly staff. The prices here are high, but if you're looking to frame something that you want to keep for a long time, this is the place to go. I ended up getting my diploma framed in museum glass with a nice mat as well. When you come here, I would suggest that you tell the staff your price range and what colors you had in mind, and take it from there. read more

The best thing about Good's of Evanston is the staff. They are very knowledgeable and are always willing to help you find just what you need. If you're just starting to take art classes or need some advice on what to use for a certain product, Good's is probably the best place to go for your supplies. They'll take the time to go over your list and make sure that you buy the right items. The store is a bit cramped...go during the week if you can. When it gets busy in there on the weekends it's hard to maneuver through the art supply aisles. I haven't had anything professionally framed there, but I've heard good things about their framing service from several people. read more

Just had my diplomas, poster, chinese art framed here, good discussions with the people there and everything came out really fantastic. Not too long ago I brought in a limited edition piece of art that had some decent value to it and wanted it framed properly to be protected and last. Decided to have it professionally framed rather than doing it myself so went to Good's. Professional framing is not cheap but Good's did a very good job, had the job done on time and it now looks beautiful on the wall. A friend recommended Good's of Evanston when I was looking to have a poster framed. I was surprised by this recommendation considering we both live in Chicago. I decided to give them a try and I'm really glad that I did. It was a great experience from beginning to end. I was helped by two different women (shift change). Both were kind enough to deal with me as I spent about two hours looking for the perfect frame. This is the first time I've had something framed on my own. I had no idea what to look for. Both women that helped me offered great advice. In the end I was very happy with the job they did. There are less expensive places to have something framed. Solid, non-frilly, non-gimmicky art supply store. It was the only place I could find the acid dyes I was looking for without having to do mail order and I was very impressed with the more professional trade-oriented craft tools and materials they carry. I live in the loop but would much rather drive up to Evanston than have to order my fiber arts stuff and pay shipping and wait for days or weeks for it to arrive. The people here are incredibly helpful and patient. Prices are high, but framing is expensive no matter where you go. You have to be able to resist your own inclination to upsell yourself. Ask them to point out the cheaper frames and let them know you're on a budget. Otherwise it's really easy to end up with a framing idea you love and find out it'll cost you hundreds of dollars to frame an 8x10 photo. read more

My mom has brought important photos to be properly framed here before, and it's one of her favorite local businesses. She asked me to take in her beloved family portrait from over 30 years ago to be framed with proper protection. The original "frame" and the photo had screw holes, which I was worried about. I received full attention and a wide range of aesthetic as well as practical advice about the new presentation of the photo. I was given many options and my own capabilities were taken into account. From the outside you wouldn't think much of this place but you can find most anything artsy crafty here. It's very old school inside. It reminds me of stores from my childhood. It's a great place to go when you're looking for something that you're having a hard time finding and aren't even sure if it exists. The downside to this place for me is that my husband loves to look at their model cars and trains and other stuff and every time he's there I have to worry about what "junk" he'll bring home. read more

Goods is good. Yes the framing is pricey. But they do an impeccable job. The people that frame are great at giving you your options honestly. They do take their time, although that could be due to availability of supplies. Bottom line, if you have a pricey piece of art to frame, re-open your wallet and trust Goods to do the job. read more

I had 2 pieces framed here at different times. the first piece roughly 11 x 14 before framing cost me around $200 to frame with standard glass. The 2nd piece 12 x 12 framed with 'non' reflective Denn glass cost me about $295. A beautiful frame that chipped VERY easily. On the 2nd frame, the problem was with the glass though, it was cut a quarter of an inch too small on one side and I could clearly see the matte NOT through the glass at the interior edge of the frame. When I brought the piece back complaining that they had cut the glass a bit too small they first told me I was wrong and then proceeded to turn the piece upside down and gave the frame a slight tap so the glass would slide into the place that made it appear as if there was no gap!!! I insisted that that was wrong, and they assured me that correct and that was how it was done. Denn glass is custom ordered and on the expensive side, Good's didn't want to 'eat' their mistake and just replace the glass, they lost 3 stars for both their refusal to acknowledge their mistake and their attempt at a cover up. Other than that they have beautiful EXPENSIVE frames. read more

Fantastic selection. Person behind the counter didn't seem to want to help us at all. Had to ask her questions instead of the other way around. Then she pointed to a back wall from where she was standing. Offered no other options. Then for next frame she showed us one, yes ONE solution. Considering there were about 12 million custom frames to choose from it was shocking. Then we went in the back to the actual frame lady who was fantastic and knew what she was doing. But then up to the front counter and the salesperson didn't charge us for the frames, and she would have never caught the mistake had the framer not come up to the front to check. Then I wanted to buy a pen. I had to ask her what the difference was between all of them, and honestly, I could have gone behind the counter and conducted all the transactions myself. Not only did she not speak clearly, as she mumbled, were we not already involved in the process of 3 frames I would have left immediately. Sad to have someone like that in front of the store.
