I've had two framing jobs done by Blackbird. The first was a painting. The person I worked with at Bkackbird was very knowledgeable about the aesthetic and technical aspects of framing this particular piece, and gave me great input. The finished piece was beautiful. Even the artist was impressed with the work. The second was an existing framed piece (done elsewhere) and the frame was coming apart. I expected to be buying a new frame. Instead, they asked to keep it for a day. When I came to pick it up, they had done a beautiful, clean repair, leaving it better than new. AND THEY DIDN'T CHARGE ME A CENT! I needed some wire to hang a painting, so I googled up "art supply stores" and these guys came up first in the search. Called em up, and it turns out they're actually a framing store, but they were like "c'mon in, of course we'll cut you some wire." Went over, and they did just that. Refused any payment from me. It was like asking your next-door-neighbor for a cup of sugar when you're in the middle of a recipe. And that's exactly what a neighborhood business should be like --neighborly. Part of the local community, not merely perched in it. They're friendly people, and from eyeballing the place I get the impression that they're real good at doing what they do, which is framing. Great local framing shop. They were very helpful and patient when I brought in a few odd pieces that I was looking to frame. Nice bonus that they didn't try to pressure me into spending more than I wanted to and even pointed out the elevated price when I fell in love with a specially made frame. I really appreciated that they were accommodating to my tastes in frames as well as showing me several different possibilities to consider; but again, no pressure. Doug became impatient when I had trouble choosing a frame as they have very expensive frames and it was an important piece I was framing. I'm so glad to have Blackbird Gallery + Framing in the neighborhood! Awhile back I went there to have some concert posters framed. They were very helpful in picking out the best frame that complimened the poster, and their prices were very reasonable. I have some other items that I want framed, however I lack the wall space. I plan to move into a larger apartment in the near future, and when I do, I will definitely go back to Blackbird for more framing. These folks have framed a bus stop sized poster advertising the fire department and an enlarged black & white wedding photo of my wife and I, for us. I have been holding on to a QOTSA concert poster from their Metro show a few years ago, because the cost of quality framing is not cheap. I recently moved into a new apartment and I felt the poster finally deserved a spot on the wall. Not only does Blackbird get great reviews, they are located less than a mile away from me. I brought my poster in, was talked through the various options and decided on what would look best/protect the piece. Then we got to the cost estimate. It is my experience that the best way to negotiate on quality service is to hear the lowest quote they will charge and then ask if they would further discount if you paid cash. Cash is king! Groupon type deals are great for restaurants and entertainment. If you are getting a service performed, ask them if you can get a better deal if you pay cash directly to them. This works 99.9% of the time. I brought my poster in on Thursday afternoon and I was called Saturday morning to let me know I could pick it up. Everything, including the museum quality glass, was able to come in under $200 with my cash discount. I could not be happier. And the poster could not look any better in its new home on my wall. read more

My wife and I went to Blackbird to have an photograph we took on vacation framed. The staff was incredibly welcoming and helpful. We love to shop local and enjoy the small businesses in the neighborhood and Blackbird makes that very easy with their exceptional service. We worked with a member of their staff to go over every detail of the framing project. We covered matte colors, frame material, glass type, all the while learning about the various benefits of each material. The staff member assisting us provided an artistic eye that helped us make the best choices for our image. When it came time to discuss the sale, they gave us a clear breakdown on the price of each aspect of the job. They were never pushy and offered us more affordable alternatives to some of the options as we contemplated the price. I felt that the price fairly represented the value we were getting for the work. Additionally, they gave us space to discuss and ultimately make our decision. When we picked up the piece, we were extremely happy with the quality of the work. The piece is absolutely perfect and was exactly what were looking for. As a further example of their great service, the owner actually offered to let us borrow his truck if we were unable to fit the piece in our car. Doug spent a lot of time with me helping me pick out just the right frames and mats to complement my art pieces.
