Jay is PHENOMENAL. I was initially hesitant because I don't tend to spend lots of money on framing (I'm usually a cut-the-piece-down-so-it-fits-in-the-cheap-frame kinda gal), but I'm so glad I decided to go to Iloilo. I had two one-of-a-kind prints from the 1880s that weren't the usual frame sizes, and I wanted to splurge a bit to make them shine. And shine they do! Jay is incredibly personable and friendly, and he is so extremely talented. Right from when he saw the prints, he could tell which mat colors would look best. We went through a few colors to see which was The One, and I trusted Jay 100% from the get-go. Other framing stores care only about profit, but you can tell that Jay honestly cares about you and your art. That being said, it's not cheap! But you're paying for quality, and I am so incredibly happy with how my pieces turned out. Jay also gave me a discount, which was unexpected but much appreciated. And I truly was floored when I picked up the pieces--I am so excited to look at them every day! I needed replacement glass for a very small frame. I stopped in Ace Hardware and he told me it was too small to cut with the machine that I should go to Iloilo around the corner and he will help me. The gentlemen who worked here took a look and cut the glass for me, realizing there was nothing in the frame to hold the glass and it would just fall out - so he looked around and found some nicer plastic/vinyl and worked to cut it just right to make it fit and work with my little frame. He didnt even charge me anything and did it out of the kindness of his heart. Im so happy to see such a friendly, neighborhood business and will keep them in mind when I need framing needs. I'm sorry to break the winning streak on this one, but I've had better framing experiences here in Chicago. I will say two things to start, though: one, this shop did a great job with the tile I needed framed. Two, while I will not return to it for further framing, I may return to check out the gold-painted, empty square and circular frames hanging in the windows (if they're for sale), since I think they would look really beautiful hung up on the wall. So, I went in after reading about this place on Yelp! and excited to discover it was just up the street. I had a small tile I purchased from an artist in Jerusalem when I was in Israel this May, and needed it framed. The owner was hard to deal with. The issue with the tile was that it was too small to be framed as it was: it needed to be matted in order to enlarge the perimeter to be framed, since frames couldn't be cut down to the small size of the tile (so much for 'custom' framing). I had never heard of this, not being an expert framer, so I asked a bunch of questions as to why this was all the case. He just got annoyed and impatient, made a lot of theatrical sighs and continued to explain. He was awfully difficult to understand, and I found him so annoying that I thanked him and said I'd return after learning a bit more about the process. Okay. THEN, I went to another framing place down the street, got the same story, but from a much nicer woman. Would that I had just given her the tile then and there! But I thought, hey, Yelp! said Iloilo was good and reasonably priced, so I'll give it another shot. I returned the next day. The owner was there, and we talked about my preferences (black matte, black frame). When I asked about the placement of the glass, he informed me that it would have to be about a half-inch above the surface of the tile. "Why is that?" I asked. Innocent question, right? Wrong. BIG sigh, BIG huff and puff. "BeCAUSE," he said, "It will BREAK otherwise." God, okay, I get it. He quoted me a whopping $51 for the whole thing. I was disgusted but I was so tired of the whole process that I said fine, just give it to me asap. I should have honestly just left then and there, seeing as the kind of service he gave wasn't worth what I eventually paid him. Do NOT come here if you want to talk to someone who is willing to take the time to explain to you yours options and what for and why you're paying an arm and a leg for them. There are definitely cheaper places in Chicago (I've been to them) and I will hunt them up in the future for any other framing I need done. read more

From the customer interaction to the finished product, I have nothing but compliments for Jay, owner and master-framer at iloilo Custom Framing. I came in on Thursday evening and picked up my custom frame on Saturday afternoon. I don't believe Jay would usually promise to finish a request in such a short time, but once I explained that it was a Valentine's gift for my boyfriend, he said he would do his best. Jay worked extra hard to make sure that it was completed when requested. I was blown away by his kindness, enthusiasm as well as the quality of his work. It was immediately very clear that Jay cares more about his customers than just making money. He didn't have to spend 45 minutes going over framing ideas with me even though it was after closing time nor did he have to complete a difficult project in such a brief time. The quality was more than exceptional. The service was great. Here, I really felt that I was more than just a customer in a transaction. I felt like a partner. I felt that he really cared for what I wanted to accomplish. He will always have my business in the future and I encourage everyone to check it out. I went to Iloilo at the recommendation of a friend. i had several items to be framed ranging from posters to fine art. On the day I arrived, we spent more than an hour choosing the right frames, mats and glass for all my pieces. Jay was a joy to work with from start to finish. I put myself completely in his hands because I have trouble visualizing a finished product so it's difficult for me to make the right choices. I described for Jay where the piece would hang, what was hanging near by, and a bare description of my style. Everything that Jay did was perfect, and the prices were reasonable. I was realistic about the cost - I wasn't looking for a $19.95 special - I wanted a frame that I was proud to hang in my home. His prices are far below the competition, and if he makes a mistake, or the piece doesn't meet his or my standards, he fixed the problem immediately with no additional expense. My favorite part of the experience was Jay's excitement when I picked up my pieces. I had a particularly nice piece to be framed, and he saved that for last. He was genuinely joyful that I loved the piece. read more

Jay is truly one of a kind. He's a living legend and his skills are a dying art. You'll never get the same attention to detail and taste at a Michael's or other generic custom framing place. I don't live in Chicago anymore, but I just had to use him for a recent gift. I told him the story behind the photo, and Jay really helped me make it special and personal. He has a great eye for color, and really understands the type of tones and textures that will compliment the artwork or photography. Wouldn't recommend. Unfortunately, I had a very delicate work of art (on fine, thin paper) that needed framing, and it now has tons of creases in it. Looks warped at the edges, too, (perhaps because not laying flat?), but the main thing is that the print that was brand new, in excellent condition, and cannot be replaced is now ruined because of creasing, and I'm unsure if another framer will be able to fix it. There's also a little bump that appeared in the print that looks like some debris is underneath. Not sure how that happened. read more

I took a few thing these past 2 years to be framed at JoAnn Fabrics; I felt their work was pricey (even with a coupon) and sometimes there was no-one at the frame desk. So I've started taking my two-dimensional treasures to Jay at Iloilo again like I did for years. He treats every one with care. Recently he helped me select mats that picked up a certain color in each of the 3 prints - he has an impeccable eye for this, and for framing that complements but won't overpower the artwork or photo. read more

I would NOT recommend this place. I stopped by a couple of weeks ago and asked to have two prints framed. The owner showed me a layout with an actual frame, matting, and glass and I said it was what I wanted. When I went to go pick up there was no frame, just a piece of glass clipped to a backing with the print between it with the clips sticking out. I explained what I agreed to and after arguing for a bit he said he would do what I originally thought I was getting at the original price. I was happy and ready to leave them a good review if correct as mistakes happen. I go to pick up today and the owner was very rude to me. I started off by apologizing for any miscommunication there may have been on my part, but I could tell he just didn't care and was very upset right from the get go. Everything I said he just kept saying something along the lines of "it doesn't matter, it's done now." No matter, I left with what I wanted (or so I thought) at the price I was quoted. I get home and the print looks a little off center so I measure them from the edge of the print to the frame. I don't know if it was out of spite, or just poor craftsmanship, but it was verified to be off center. It's not a huge amount, but definitely noticeable to the naked eye if looking. It is very disappointing to have paid money for something and it not be done correct. If it was spite, then this is very bad business and I hope it comes back to them in some way. If it was due to poor craftsmanship, then so be it and I would just not recommend going there if you want something done correctly. I will now have to bring them somewhere else to correct this bad quality work. It is not my fault that the owner showed me something and wrote down something different before I left. I don't understand framing terminology and shouldn't be expected to. He should have made it clear what I was paying for was what he wrote down. He also should not have compounded the issue by being rude and also giving me a product of bad quality. I will never give this place my money again and would not recommend others using them for any framing needs. read more

How to describe the experience with Jay at Illoilo? Fan-freakin-tastic! For my parents 35th wedding anniversary I wanted to do a special collage of their wedding photos plus one from each of the kids' weddings. The process with Jay could not have been easier. I brought in the pictures, gave him a price range and told him the style that would match my folks décor. Since it was going to be a gift I was a bit more choosy and cautious about making a selection but he has a rather large variety of frames and mats so we were able to put together a gorgeous picture. The entire time he was extremely patient, made helpful suggestions and made sure that I stayed in my price range. The end result was beautiful and it made a fantastic gift. I have been taking both fine art and prints to Jay for 5 years now. Having had a few years of framing under my own belt, I am very picky about how my pieces are done and Jay never disappoints.
