Golden Ox has the most authentic Mexican food in this city. They even give you free grilled and salted jalapenos. If you want the best American breakfast burrito in town; ask them to add gravy into your burrito. Since they have biscuits & gravy on the menu; you can take advantage of the opportuniy. Their onion rings come in a bag that is bigger than what other places give. The cashier is very friendly and makes you feel welcomed. read more

When you are in the middle of CA... you are limited on food options. I saw that the drive thru had 4 cars and that was enough for me to stop here for lunch. No menu outside but the girl handed me one. It was an extensive menu ranging from breakfast to lunch. The prices are a lot for a small town. 4 bacon double cheese burger meals, 1 pastrami sandwich and 1 carne asada taco ran me $82. Took a while to get the food but it was made fresh. The food was mediocre. Burger meat tasted like frozen costco patties. Not much flavor, and dry. I can't speak about the pastrami, but my friend didn't bother finishing it. The carne asada meat however, was good. It was well seasoned. The workers are nice and they did check in on us during the visit. Decent food overall. read more

No menu outside for a drive-thru-only restaurant is crazy. 3.8 stars, overall. Is the menu and pricing a secret? Service was very nice but he forgot the ranch he offered to me. I came for a chorizo breakfast burrito, and this place had the audacity to say it doesn't come with potatoes or cheese inside. Those things cost extra. Never in my life have I heard of a place getting away with making plain-a** breakfast burritos and getting good reviews. Nickel-and-diming customers for the usual ingredients is so weird. Obviously this place is for repeat locals only-- lol, it seriously felt like they think business is so good, they don't need to even try. I don't like that aspect of businesses in Ridgecrest. Some of them look like they do not care. I ended up getting a cheeseburger combo because it came with cheese and potatoes and all that, unlike the breakfast burrito. Burger tasted good, homemade, but kinda dry, like, no sauce. Fries were good, too. Be careful driving into their lot-- the poor state of the asphalt is treacherous. read more

So, this Golden Ox place in Ridgecrest, you never know if it's open or not, ever since COVID. Best to just call ahead and order for pickup. They have a drive-thru window, so you don't even have to get out of your car. We got a bunch of burgers, Cali burritos, onion rings, fries, and a chicken quesadilla. The burgers were great, and the burritos were big and tasty. The fries and onion rings were just okay. But the quesadilla had canned chicken in it! I thought it would be grilled chicken, not canned or slow-cooked chicken. It tasted like it came straight from a can! I'm at a motel two doors down the road. We returned from Death Valley late enough (8 pm?) that many places were closed, including the suggested restaurant of the people with whom I rode. I didn't want to go to a chain fast food place, so I punted and came to this restaurant. I didn't get through the whole menu board but they have a mix of Mexican food and burgers. I ordered two carne asada tacos and a medium Jamaica as a drink--$9.12. It was a busy place and it took a while for her to bring the drink to my table. The taste was good but there was so much ice that I didn't get enough to drink in the 20 ounce cup. It was finished before I finished my food. The two tacos arrived and I had to ask where the salsa was. They have a little salsa bar with red salsa, green salsa, pico de gallo, and a couple of other items. I went to get a napkin from another table as the dispenser at my table was empty, but she had brought a fork with a few napkins anyway. The tacos were bigger than I normally get in Northern California, with tortillas the size that I can buy in stores. They had been fried but didn't really taste home made--probably from a bag. The meat was sometimes chewy but overall, I think I'd return for another try. Maybe, I just need one taco, rice, and beans, plus Jamaica with not much ice. read more

The Golden Ox offers the BEST horchata I have ever had! If you go, you must try it! Everything else about this restaurant is pretty good. I enjoy stopping in and getting a breakfast burrito. Be warned, they are absolutely huge! The flavors inside are pretty plain but with some added salsa and pico de gallo, it is pretty good. The dining space is small indoors and there are a few tables outdoors as well. The menu is out-dated looking and kind of hard to read but the prices are pretty reasonable. The two times I have been there, it seems as though it is a family-operated business and everyone is very kind. The food is made fresh when you order it but still comes pretty quickly. read more

Looks like an old recycled Dairy Queen. Small dining room with large windows and adequate shades. Clean. Most tables occupied at 4:00pm. I've been craving tamales the past couple of days and Olvera"s dried up stick failed to satisfy yesterday. Here I see a wet tamale plate for $7. Ordered with salsa verde. The tamale was moist! The salsa verde was thin and very wet, but had good flavor and just enough heat. The plate comes with rice that's dry enough to blow off the plate and frijoles that are pretty good. Should have ordered some chips to finish them off with the remaining salsa on the plate. Now I'm pleasantly full and none the poorer. Recommended. read more

Golden ox has the best Cali burrito I've ever had. Anytime I have a Cali burrito from anywhere else, I always think of golden ox in the back of my mind and wish I was eating one of there's instead. Pro tip: ask for crispy fries in your burrito. My boyfriend likes to ask for bacon in his sometimes, so if you're feeling adventurous, that's pretty bomb too. It was a pretty good sized burrito too. This is just a small hole in the wall, small town grill, so don't have any expectations of fancy.
