It has been a minute since I have taken the moment to scribe a thought or two. But today is the day. This adventure began yesterday as I followed my host on an excursion through a quite "Pedestrian" in mind area. Madison, WI, is nice to walk in! Back to the point, I hold the door to this little, quaint, more kitchen than seating area, with a menu that represents, get this, The Globe! Rice is everywhere. The first thing I see is " jambalaya"! I get it. The counter person looks at me, matter of factly "What Spice level would you like, 1-5..." "Five Please." It was the matter of fact look of return from him that was so tickling to me, as my Host, who ordered their "usual", The Afghan Korma Curry w/ Chicken, interjected with a nod and a "Yes. A 5." I wasn't expecting much based on the exterior and the 'asian fusion' label (its overused) but all doubts vanished when our food arrived at the table. The fried dumplings were unlike any I had tried before and will definitely get again. I had the Korean BBQ over rice and my wife had tofu curry noodles and we were both very impressed. The food was fresh, thoughtful, and well crafted. We both had the hibiscus lemonade which was sweet and floral. I got spice level 3 (of 5) and might try 4 next time. The decor was simple and there's only a couple of tables but you won't care once you've found your seat. Its some of the best asian food I've had anywhere. They double-check orders for each table even during rush hours, and the humorous staff who took orders was also impressive. Absolutely love The Globe! Everything that I've tried here has been great, but my go-to favorite dish is the Afghan Korma Curry with chicken at spice level 3/5. The flavors are so rich and delicious! Pairs well with the samosas. The menu rotates and it's fun to try new dishes, but you can't go wrong with the korma curry (a menu stable!). The owner is kind and friendly! The restaurant itself is on the smaller side, but there is patio seating and to-go orders available. The only downside is parking near State Street, but the food is definitely worth it! Came here for lunch on a weekday, there was only one other party in this quaint, homey restaurant. You order up at the register and they bring the food out to you; the people working were really kind and friendly, something I appreciated. The food came out relatively quickly - I believe there's only one chef and he does a great job as well. The portion was really filling and both dishes were really delicious. They also don't charge for extra rice! We also got a mango lassi which had a really unique flavor ( maybe cinnamon? ) that I haven't tried in other lassis which made it really stand out. Wow this place is yummy. Spicy. But yummy. We came for dinner on a Tuesday. They've got about 4 tables that seat a very cozied up 2-4 people and about 4 tables outside as well. It was bustlin around 7- almost couldn't land a table. Overall a really cozy and inviting atmosphere. There really is a variety on the menu, from Korean to tacos to curry. We got the Indian Tic Tac Curry and the Thai Coconut Curry Hurry. The spice scale was from 1 to 5 with 5 being the spiciest. We got 3 and 2, respectively. I can't even imagine what a 5 spice level is, because the 2 was already hot hot hot. I can handle my spice like a medium amount. I like it but I still like to be able to eat and enjoy my food. The 3 was really pushing the enjoyableness. If you are bad with spice, definitely ask for 1. That being said, even with the mad levels of spice it was still so yummy! Very flavorful and seriously so spicy. And they plate it in this cute copper lookin bucket! I also got a Thai Tea and it was really good! It was bright orange and so creamy. Definitely was the least sweet Thai Tea I have ever had but in the best possible way. TLDR: kick it back with some cozy Curry, but be honest with yourself and get that level 1 or 2 spiciness. read more

I am from out of town so perhaps my taste buds are different from the local folks. I was really looking forward to eating from this place and trying the curry hurry and Somosa. I will tell you that 8/10 restaurants that I visit to try curry are much better. Perhaps it is that the locals don't have good curry options. The other noticeable aspect of the visit was that staff were not smiling at each other or at customers. They weren't unfriendly, just not warm friendly. Came in on a Friday night and it was packed, but by the time our food came out, luckily one the few tables in the joint had opened up. I got the Korean bbq noodles with tofu and Tibetan veggie dumplings. The portions are quite large and decent for the price. I got a level 2 spice on the noodles and you can certainly expect some heat! It feels like a "iykyk" kind of place/atmosphere. I'm not usually a fan of "Asian fusion," because in the house I grew up in, we called this, "leftovers." However this unique place has fused together some Asian cuisines in a decidedly inspired way. It's Madison so unsurprisingly they are very vegan friendly, unlike many vegetarian South Asian places. The Tic-Tac curry is the best, the Tibetan style dumplings a close second. Not served South Asian or Southeast Asian style, the entrees are for individuals but it's not that hard to share. The service friendly, but they are victims of their own success. This place is very busy, it's a small cramped little space. The clientele are excellent, lots of polite, respectful undergrads, but I'm a college professor so when I'm not working I don't want to be crammed in tight with a bunch of college students no matter how smart and respectful they are. On the other hand I certainly won't want to see them move into a big fancy location and increase prices and staff, when that happens too often something important gets lost. I think they also run the little convenience store next door. I do recommend this place for first dates, I overheard two different couples on first dates here and when you pick a unique restaurant like this you learn things about the other person (both dates seemed to be going very well). read more

On an extremely warm evening, we decided to visit this restaurant based on the reviews shared online. We are from out of town and were intrigued by the menu. We weren't quite sure how it worked but ordered inside at the counter. We were then assisted to a table outside. We waited a bit for our two dishes to arrive. They both had yellow curry as the base which was not what we were expecting for a chow mein and a fried rice. While good, they were both basically the same, one with spaghetti noodles and the other rice. We also asked for two additional small plates as we were sharing both dishes. The employee acknowledged that we wanted other plates and indicated he would bring them to us. Well he never did and we were too hot and tired to ask. There are some restaurants that make you feel like you are entering somebody's home rather than a restaurant. Even though this place is very small with limited seating, we were immediately welcomed. Being new to Himalayan food, I tried the sampler plate. It was a nice blend of flavors and had a beautiful presentation. If not accustomed to spicy food, this food might be a little spicy for some. Spice is delivered in a range from 1-5, one being the least spicy. A fantastic Madison restaurant that you need to try. It was our first time there and the staff was very helpful explaining the menu and helping us pick out a few items. This place was a recent addition to my restaurant "adventure list" after reading an article about them. It's a tiny restaurant on Henry street with 5 tables. They were stuffed with deliciousness, crisp on the outside and the dipping sauce was bursting with flavor. Our entree choices were the Tic-Tac curry and Thai coconut curry-hurry; we added chicken as our protein. You have 5 levels of spice to choose from- we both went with level 3 and let me tell you, it was perfect. Any hotter and it would have been too much for me. Our entrees arrived in these beautiful metal bucket-like containers. We each received a plate of perfectly cooked rice. Both entrees were equally different but equally fantastic. The lemongrass in the Thai coconut curry kept the dish light while the Tic-Tac curry was hearty and both warmed you up from the inside out on a brisk fall day. The chow Mein was very spicy and without warning and the spice level overwhelmed the flavor. I ordered this because it seemed to be the most tame of their menu and I wanted my kids to be able to eat it. No luck. The steamed veggies were super flat and bland. Visiting friends in Madison and she had heard about this place from Tiktok! We decided to try it after walking around the farmers market. First off, the staff was so incredibly nice and went above and beyond. They told us all about their menu and their most popular dishes. I even ordered a can of coke and they didn't have any cold ones so they went across the street to the convenience store to get me a cold one! With COVID buffets have been out of season for some time and you often end up craving set meals with minimal decision making. Learning thus of the lunch bento boxes offered here I was intrigued. Vaguely reminiscent of the Indian thali, the pre-set Nepali lunch consists of a salad, a orange chicken Indian curry (think butter chicken with carrots and other veg), some collard greens and a zucchini/gourd veg simmered with lentils served with white rice and a piece of bread very much undecided if it wants to be a roti or a tortilla. Also ordered on the side was an expensive samosa. The food was fresh, hot and steaming and flavorful. It could use some lime and acid and dial back a bit on the oil but pretty decent for the region. Is it authentic? Somewhat, still pandering but there are some roots in the flavors. I'll say it is pretty much the embodiment of the food in a middle class north Indian wedding. Its hard to get the more Indian style fried samosas around these parts so that was pleasant if very oily and the tamarind sauce little watery and weak. All in all worth exploring, definitely does better than the bigger sit down places in downtown that promise you a taste of the Indian sub-continent. Now to try the rest of the menu. read more
