The Jazz music playing at the time (Where's my Horace Parlan fans at)
Hannah H.

As soon as we entered the restaurant we noticed how cozy it felt. The lighting and seating arrangement create an inviting atmosphere, with jazzy music playing in the background, perfect for a family dinner. There are paintings and hand-carved wooden masks on the walls, a blend of history and art that immerses the customer and complements the authentic cuisine. We started with the delicious Tempeh chips and ordered the Keju appetizer, a cream cheese-filled wonton made with green onions, which I preferred over Crab Rangoon. The main event was the sizzling shrimp. It arrived sizzling with a sweet and savory sauce that was absolutely chef's kiss. The sprouts added a nice crunch, while the veggies added a freshness. My party of three asked for extra rice to pair with the dish. Note: if you cannot handle spicy foods, make sure to ask for the mild version!

Mango curry and shredded chicken curry
Michelle H.

Cute casual Indonesian spot on the Isthmus. I ordered the mango curry with chicken & partner ordered the shredded chicken coconut curry; we both got the lumpia. The lumpia was a little disappointing -- just a veggie roll with not a lot of flavor & no meat inside. Coming from an area in California with a lot of Southeast Asians, I think I expected more flavor. Shredded chicken curry was creamy but didn't have that much flavor. Partner kept eating my dish. Mango curry with chicken was the best dish we ordered, very flavorful and the way they marinated the chicken made it very tender. Very delicious dish and the only one I'd recommend of the 3. Service was quick and attentive. Restaurant wasn't too full when we entered, should be easy to walk in. I'd recommend the mango curry if you go but in general the other dishes we had weren't flavorful enough which was disappointing for an Indonesian restaurant.

Indo mac

Great selection of tasty vegan friendly options. Indo mac is a creamy curry like taste with bamboo shoots and a hint of spice. Sambal tempeh has a nice light sweetness with maybe a hint of acid? Nice and satisfying with a good flavor profile and good crispiness to the green beans.

I have been thinking about this restaurant and the food since we went because it was so good! A group of us went and we all tried something new and something we hadn't had before if we'd already been. Everyone loved their dishes! The serving sizes are large, so go hungry! Otherwise, it made for great leftovers the next day. The service was excellent too! Our server helped us pick the right dishes for us; he answered our questions and gave good recommendations. Can't wait to go back!

As the only Indonesian restaurant in Madison, this place definitely has decent food for what it is. I enjoyed all the dishes we ordered, but the self order system was definitely a bit strange and the ambiance was a bit crowded.

Opor ayam

I took out lunch from here. I went for MINI RIJSTAFFEL FOR TWO. For $42, we can pick 4 dishes. That was true value. And it was good for 2 people for 2 meals. Rendang was my favorite item. It was very flavorful. Ayem gemprek was my second favorite item. Ayam kunyit and opor ayam were all good dishes.

Food was delicious! Service and ambiance was great. Will return when visiting Madison again. My husband grew up eating Indonesian food and it said it tasted just like what he ate.

Country music and Indo food not the First combination you'd think of but hey the rendang was really good! Personally I'd skip the satay as the chicken wasn't the best in my opinion. I'd go back again and again for the rendang. Service was great and quick. Thought it was a fun little find for sure plenty of parking in the front and back.

Went to Madison for a food adventure day with a friend, and Bandung was our first stop. We ordered the Bakmi Goreng with Beef (Indonesian egg noodles), Satay Ayam (marinated chicken skewers), and a bunch of appetizers including some of the most amazing crispy and juicy chicken wings, Otak-Otak (steamed fish cake in banana leaf), fried Tempeh Goreng, Lumpia, and a Krakatau Chicken slider. Every bite was excellent! I'm not sure I could pick a favorite dish because I would order every one of them again, but I want to try more menu items next time. Yes, there will be a next time! Go try this delicious cuisine for yourself!

One of my favorite restaurants in Madison! It's been a few months since I ordered from here so I was so excited to dine in. I ordered pangsit keju (cream cheese wonton, served with a side of siracha), Beef Pad Thai (stir-fried rice noodles with egg and served with bean sprouts, ground peanuts, and green onion in a special house sauce), and 8 chicken wings (deep fried in peanut oil gourmet wings served with sweet and spicy peanut sauce). I loved the pangsit keju so much that I ordered two orders of it. The beef pad thai was missing something and I couldn't figure out what was missing. The wings were amazing and so crispy.

There is a separate bar area on the right hand side when you walk in.

Great place and tasty food! There is a check in offer, FYI! It was great trying some new dishes that I have not had like the Gulai Kambjng. Also some more familiar stuff on the menu, as well for those that like keeping the status quo and getting something familiar (but there was a fist time for everything, right so why not have a new first time!). The Nutty Coconut drink was to die for if you're a coconut lover like myself. So yum. I think I did say no simple syrup, I don't need really sweet drinks and it was perfectly sweet enough for me without it. And the coconut milk they used was the creamy good stuff. They do have some music or dance lessons at time in the bar side area on the right. Then there's the main dinner area on the left side. Hope everyone stops by and give the place a shot, it's worth it!

I can see why this is the first place that pops up in my browser when I searched for "Indonesian food" in Madison because it is so delicious! The wait for delivery wasn't too long either. My crew ordered three entrees and multiple add-ons on a Saturday evening and it took an hour for the food to be delivered. The chicken satay, cream cheese wontons, and pad Thai really are superb. The rice cakes that come with the chicken skewers are also a special, textural treat. I highly recommend getting your next order of something tasty and filling here!

BoPo Chicken

Wow, this was one of the best meals I have had in a long time. We ordered several dishes and all were very flavorful and tasty. All the dishes were light and didn't leave you with this gross full feeling when finished. Favorites at the table were the Curry Eggplant, Capcay Goreng and BoPo Chicken.

Okay Indonesian food. Not very authentic. Some dishes that I know are very different here. Pleasant location near downtown.

I got pad thai to go, and it was so so good. A little spicy, but in the best way. Only thing I wish for are bigger servings!

Everything we tried was outstanding. The restaurant has two floors which may lead for a tad slower service on a busy night as people go up and down the stairs. I enjoy the throwback signs of restaurants of old. Plants and artwork broke up the space, feeling both open yet cozy. We started with a few apps-bison momo, samosa, and pakoda. The samosa had an incredibly flaky crust that was stellar. The momo was next level. The accompanying sauce brought a little heat but every bite left you wanting more. For our main course, we opted for the lamb kabobs as well as the biriyani. The lamb was executed perfectly-a great char with tender meat, it was accompanied by a nice rice pilaf. The dish was substantial as was the biriyani. Flavor packed, it hit all the notes. For those new to Madison or unfamiliar to the area, Ama is set back off the road with a very small/tight parking lot. We opted for street parking vs. trying to jenga ourselves out of there. A must visit.

There's lots of natural light and the atmosphere is just really nice. I will say it was a bit toasty inside and the windows were open. Our server was very attentive and helped me figure out what could be made vegan (a lot of the menu). My table ordered samosas, which were light/tasty and almost seemed like they were baked. I ordered the tofu buff for my entree and I really enjoyed it. The portion sizes are a little small for the price, but it does come with a delicious dal and that helps. Overall really flavorful and it all tasted so fresh. I'm looking forward to my next visit!

Weary is an eclectic space that is full of a hodgepodge of artwork, mirrors, lighting, decor and a bunch of random items that just make sense together. The vibe here is uniquely local for this part of Madison and from the moment you enter through the large ornate wooden door, you are teleported into a special space where a good time is sure to be had! We have come here for Friday Fish Fry, weekday lunch and weekend brunch, and we have never left unhappy or hungry. The menu is made up of mostly classic dishes such as salads, soups, burgers and sandwiches, with a few mains like steak frites and pork chop. Brunch has your classic brunch dishes such as breakfast plates, biscuits and gravy, burrito and of course, French toast. The fish fry is excellent here, especially the pan fried version, which still provides the light, crisp and fresh fish but less the thick breading. For brunch, the breakfast burrito add sausage was spot on and super tasty! For cocktail, they have a stellar menu of house curated cocktails. For brunch, I went with the Bloody Mary and outside of brunch hours, I gravitate to the Killer Bees Knees gin based cocktail. I will grab a beer on occasion, but the cocktails are too good to pass up! Service is always stellar here whether we are sat in the dining room or bellied up to the bar. Overall, absolutely in love The Weary Traveler Freehouse!

However, our server wasn't super familiar with the menu and didn't know what was in certain dishes. We ordered a variety of dishes. Overall, everyone liked their meals. The flavors were great. Love the Korean fusion. However... despite that we were the first ones in the door, they did not have the chicken that was on the menu. That seemed strange to all of us that they didn't plan ahead for a holiday weekend. A solid restaurant would usually have their menu items well stocked prior to a holiday weekend. We had reservations, so we were seated right away which was a plus. Also, I will say I don't think any of the issues we had were because of our waitress. She was super friendly and quick enough to take our orders on a day when there restaurant seemed full enough, but manageable. We got our drink orders in and our food at the same time to speed up the process for getting little kids food, and the waitress even took note of that. We also ordered an appetizer to help during the wait. It took a while for the drinks to come out, but they were all rather tasty. I think my apple cider mocktail was the best and refreshing since it was getting hot in the restaurant with the sun beating in. Our food however took forever and the kids meals did not come out any earlier than everyone else. One person in our group also initially didn't get his meal, which the waitress apologized and said there was a mixup in the kitchen. That's fine, it happens, but then the staff running meals tried to bring him the wrong order 3 times. The rest of us were all finished eating by the time he finally got his food. Overall, the food was fine. I got the eggs benedict which was a little underdone on the eggs for me as the whites were too runny for me. The kids chicken nuggets were pretty tasty with a flaky breading. I heard decent reviews of the breakfast burger, but the thing that was the best to us was the breakfast sandwich. It was quite messy, but the messiness of the sauce was worth it. We also got an appetizer of the cinnamon roll. I feel like it's a little mislabeled though, as it was more like a morning bun with some frosting/glaze over the top. Tasted pretty good and helped keep kids entertained for a while. Overall, the food was fine, but the experience wasn't great. With the multiple mixups in orders and getting a little green house effect going with the sun shining in, there wsnt a great feeling when leaving. Again, I don't think it was our waitresses fault, so not sure what was going on in the kitchen.
