I really appreciate that they have some vegan options here and that they are also very willing to accommodate special requests. I talked to them last time I picked up my order about if they could do a vegan mango lassi, and they said that they could. So haven't tried this yet, but looking forward to it for next time. The space is a little small and often too crowded for my comfort especially during covid, so I like getting take out and finding a spot near the lake to eat. read more

With no particular place in mind for dinner, my wife and I decided to head out to State Street and take our chances on a Friday night. We stumbled on The Globe on Henry Street and, based on several great Yelp reviews, we decided to give the place a shot. Am I ever glad we did. Seriously, in one trip, this place has become one of my very favorites downtown -- and that's saying a lot. I was initially impressed by the restaurant's quaint, functional interior, and the surprisingly clean bathroom when I went in to wash up before eating. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted warmly by the owner, Ashim, who explained his menu and went out of his way to make sure we had a great dining experience. We ordered drinks: a Mexican Coke for me and a cranberry tea for my wife. (I was tempted by the mango and banana lassis, but stuck with my standard. My wife was pleased to see ginger ale available, as it's hard to find at many eateries these days). From there, Ashim told us that, with our meals, we would be getting free cups of his two soups: Himalayan 15 Bean and Coconut Cauliflower Chowder. I am a fan of bean soups, and this one did not disappoint. Plenty of bean variety and a tasty broth that I ended up drinking straight from the cup. The big surprise for me was the chowder. Why? Because I absolutely HATE cauliflower, and I avoid it at all costs. But my wife insisted I try it and, as usual, she was right. I LOVED IT! It was one of the most flavorful soups I have ever tasted, with a taste that lingered long after I finished. I can't believe I'm saying this but, if they aren't still offering free cups next time, I'll be paying for that Coconut Cauliflower Chowder. (In fact, with the closing of Kabul on State, this will likely replace my regular cravings for mashawa). For our entrees, my wife ordered the Indian Tic-Tac Curry (simmered in exotic and creamy tomato cilantro curry) and I opted for the Thai Coconut Curry-Hurry (simmered in coconut milk with lemongrass, ginger and garlic). Wow. Such amazing tastes, with made-to-order heat. My wife went mild while I asked for a bit of spice. With the perfect amount of heat, Ashim informed me my dish would rank at a "1" for heat (apparently, I've grown soft in my old age). We both finished half of our meals, and it was a struggle to behave and box up half to take home for lunch the next day. It was that good. One thing I noticed with the entrees was that the rice had a lovely texture and tasted almost creamy. Normally, rice is just a carb that soaks up the sauce for me, but this was different -- better. Ashim mentioned that he spends a little more money to get top-shelf Jasmine rice, and that he has had others mention how much they enjoyed it. I appreciated the attention to detail for something as simple as rice. As you can see, I don't do a ton of review on Yelp. But it would have been a disservice to Ashim -- and to Madison's food fans -- to not praise his hard work, friendliness and absolutely fantastic cuisine. We will most certainly be back to try new offerings as Ashim's menu evolves (he said he likes to keep it fresh by changing things from time to time). If you enjoy food -- really enjoy food --- you owe it to yourself to check out this true gem before it's crawling with customers. It won't be long. read more

Well, that was me at The Globe today, but I am so glad I stayed. I'll be honest, the place is a little shabby. It's very clean. Just rustic. I wasn't impressed with the decor when I walked in. Hence, the hesitation. However, the decor was quickly forgotten once I took a look at the menu. I could tell the owners put some creative thought into the cuisine. Lots of vegetarian options, Japanese, Indian, curries, tapas...it hit home for me. I ordered a Chili Buff (whatever that is) spicy vegetable curry over jasmine rice. It was prepared to perfection. The spice flavors were new and explosive in my mouth. The heat wasn't too much. This wasn't your typical Indian restaurant. This was something different and delicious. I was really impressed with their use of spices. They went above and beyond to create flavors you won't find in typical American/foreign cuisine. Every time I think I've eaten at my go-to place, I find yet another! Tonight was via EatStreet and was a Vegetable Samosa, Chicken Dumplings, Wai Wai ramen noodles. It arrived quickly and was all still very hot and managed to travel quite well. The Samosa was well seasoned and delicious! The dumplings were quite good as well - perhaps a little over sauced for my liking, but also good. I thought his 15 bean could use some salt. The Cauliflower Chowder was lovely. He had the Korean BBQ Tofu. I had the Chicken Indian Tic Tac Curry. Both had a lot of depth of flavor. If I had to do it again, I'd go with Tofu as the protein. It was quality Tofu, not the rubbery crap you get some places. I'm not a vegetarian, but for vegetarians struggling to eat out in Madison, this place would be heaven, since about 90% of the menu has a vegetarian or vegan option. read more

Since moving downtown I've ordered this food about half a dozen times, and I think it's my favorite place in Madison. The Korean BBQ is so good that I order it every time despite being interested in the other items. Awesome food that is served to your liking in terms of spice. I love it's hole in the wall setup and serving Jarritos to drink is always a major bonus for me. Pro tip: They let you choose a spice level from 1-5, and it makes a pretty big difference. Personally I like spicy food more than most white people; I find the 4 is delicious and almost borders on too hot, I can tell the 5 would be too hot for me. On the flip side you can go lower and it'll be pretty tame. I'm not sure what number it was, but one time my delivery driver got me something lower and I barely tasted spice at all. Probably a 1 or 2. I would expect a 3 to still be on the spicier side just based on how hot 4 is, but I can't be sure. (If you go in person just ask the guy, he knows.) read more
