As a Pescetarian in Northeast Ohio I have meaning to try Jolly Roger Seafood House for a while,…read morewell I finally got there and the big question is why I waited so long. Jolly Roger is located in Port Clinton right on Lake Erie; I was expecting something ordinary or just a bit dated and boy was I wrong. The building is very modern and clean from the outside, white and angular with big windows. Inside white walls, rough hewn wooden tables and just the right amount of decor makes for a modern seaside feel, casual but also classy. The setup is fast casual, you order and pay up front at the counter, get a number for your table and then get your own drink at the service station. The menu is understandably very heavy on fish and seafood with a couple of other items. While there are the expected fried fish meals, but also oysters, shrimp and salmon, salads and even some tacos. The reason I came was of course for the fried fish, I decided on the Perch and Chips, which is $18. I grabbed some water, hot sauce and lemon and settled onto a table. The meal was brought out fresh and hot by a food runner in a couple of minutes. The meal was 4 nice sized perch fillets on top of a generous portion of fresh waffle fried potatoes with a side of tarter sauce. The fish were excellent, fresh and perfectly fried with a nice crispy cornmeal crust around the delicately fish; moist with a slight sweetness and perfect texture. The waffle fries were exceptional, fried to a crisp outside and tasty inside; usually fries at a seafood place are an afterthought, here they actually are well worth getting and eating. Even the tarter sauce was very nice, nothing special but creamy with a nice pickle contrast to add a little extra flavor. Usually when I see a place that has been around this long and has great reviews I am a bit let down when I give them a try; Jolly Rogers Seafood House exceeded my expectations in almost every way. Although set up as a fast casual restaurant with a typical fried seafood menu, the actual restaurant feels more upscale and modern with a great inside and a very nice patio looking out onto Lake Erie. The food is not cutting edge, but it is expertly prepared and delicious. Prices are moderate with large portions for your money. Some of the best fried perch and waffle fries I have had. I will be back any time I am in the area, a very high recommendation as long as you are looking for fish or seafood, go and enjoy.

Really, really good food! The Perch was some of the best I've ever had. Mushrooms were great too…read more The only knock I have is the waffle fries were like warm. I LOVE waffle fries, but they have to be hot. It was also nice to see they had a selection of beers. Food came out fast. I would not hesitate to return.

I did make a few notes on the day of, so hopefully those suffice! So about 12 others from my foodie group and I dined at Salmon Dave's for a group lunch in April of 2025. The interior is cute and decorated like a fish joint off the coast of Florida. We had made reservations beforehand, but it was clear they were still understaffed. It took a bit too long for our food to arrive. I think we waited about 45 minutes for our mains to arrive. We all munched on the free bread while we waited. The bread was okay - standard white crusty bread. The service was also pretty good. Our waters were always kept pretty full but our waitress wasn't much for conversation - just kept things pretty serious. I ordered fried fish for my main (I am pretty picky about how I like fish prepared). My fried fish dinner was massive! I have never seen a fried fish as big as the one I had at Salmon Dave's. It was good too which is why my review is 4 stars instead of 3 or 3.5 stars. The coleslaw is a liquidy mush of nothing - don't bother getting this. In short, I paid about $40 after tax and tip for my fish fry lunch and while it took a while to arrive and I wasn't impressed with the sides, my friends and I had a good time! I was very impressed with the fish too!

The first course was complimentary breads with olive tapenade. The breads were so rustic and delicious. The olive tapenade was a great dipping sauce. For appetizer, I got fried calamari. It was a modern Italian twist. The fried calamari was so tender. It had light breading. It was fried together with olives, sun dried tomatoes, sliced shiitake mushrooms and some basils. It was so good that I kept eating it. For entrees, I got the bone-in CAB ribeye. It was cooked medium rare. The steak was juicy, tender and had a little bite to it. The asparagus was great in the dish. However, I was not too keen on crispy potatoes with Gorgonzola cheese. The cheese kinda made the potatoes a bit salty. I didn't enjoyed it at all. The beef short rib was another entree I tried as well. It was tender but the flavor was not deep and complex. Overall, the restaurant did a good job with the food. I would come back if I am ever in the area.

I don't drink anymore, so seeing a non alcoholic drink section was nice to see. I was made aware that the base of the Aplos was very herbal and tart. The first one brought to me was very tart. Very, very tart. I was not a fan, my dad was going to drink it, our waitress: Deja noticed and offered to have it remade. I accepted, the bartender came out to drop it off and explained how she changed it up. She stood by me and waited until I tried it. A bit much, it was better. The tartness was only at the end for a brief moment. They didn't have a specific gluten free menu, but Deja did tell us what was naturally gluten free and/or could be modified. A lot of the food is made in house. A lot of it looked appealing, but they had gluten free noodles that were not made in house. So I went with a trusted filet mignon cooked medium. The demi glace was an excellent touch. The potatoes were pretty good. The broccolini wasn't what I was hoping for. My parents dishes were much larger. Leftovers were had and enjoyed on a second day. I would maybe try the short ribs next time we would go. The building is very rustic and decorative. The bathroom is upstairs; an elevator is present is needed. A very interesting place. Staff and kitchen very accommodating. The prices are high for the amount you're given. Would love some in house pasta that is gluten free with an in house sauce. I was there primarily for the company. Not my favorite spot. I would be willing to go again.
