A very solid meal, especially for a hotel restaurant (which can sometimes be great--and sometimes not). Service was friendly and professional, and in one of our two meals here, they were gracious as we bumped into people we knew and ended up combining tables. The food was good; highly recommend the Blackened Walleye, which (with its succotash) was delicious and quite filling. The stuffed gnocchi might have been a little over the top (gnocchi not good enough on their own? gotta stuff 'em?) but it was also yummy. Of particular note: the restaurant both has a good selection of gluten-free dishes and is sensitive about gluten/cross-contamination concerns. If you're ordering just an appetizer and a main course, don't expect to leave feeling full, especially when it comes to their steak, which is surprisingly small, around an ounce of meat, and accompanied by a heavy serving of carbs, which will makes you swollen, fat also on the road of diabetes. The carb-heavy dishes might fill you up temporarily but tend to leave you hungry again soon after. That said, I do recommend the steak and eggs from their weekend brunch menu. The food is pretty tasty (and not cheap), the atmosphere is open and echoey, but very light and airy. I have only eaten here for weekend brunch. It is an available option if Feve is too busy. The menu for brunch is pretty small, but the Benedict is good and there is nowhere else in town you can get it. Coffee is not very warm and the servers are bad about refilling it, to be honest. Side salads that you get with brunch are very nice, with cherry tomatoes and finishing flake salt. I need to come for something other than brunch to give a full review. But I have come a half-dozen times, for brunch. read more

We are trying to complete the Lorain County Ice Cream Trail and this restaurant is one of the participants. Why they are on the ice cream trail is beyond me. First, you have to be seated in the restaurant for them to wait on you. Second, when we said we were there for the ice cream, we were told they have chocolate, vanilla and praline. WHAT?????? And to boot, a teeny scoop, served in a bowl was $4.00 and that was after they took off the discount because of the voucher. This restaurant should never have participated, because that's not what it's about. I can't comment on the menu, as we didn't eat anything. Atmosphere - modern. Set just off the main lobby of the hotel, the restaurant is fairly small with floor to ceiling glass on one side. We arrived around 8 pm and there were only two tables with patrons. The chairs were less than comfortable and the place had an upscale cafe feel to it. Service - average, at best. Despite the fact that the restaurant was extremely slow, it took some time before we were approached by a server. To be honest, I have a feeling that our server was fairly new to the restaurant and to the profession. She was tentative and was not very personable. Food - good. Here, I need to qualify my review by stating that I only ordered ice cream. The restaurant is on a Lorain County promotional event involving ice cream. I am puzzled as to why this restaurant was included. Virtually every other participating business was an ice cream store. In the end, the restaurant had only 3 flavors of ice cream! I had chocolate, which was pretty good but nothing special. It was served in a very small parfait glass for $4! Value - Poor. I probably don't need to elaborate. read more

HEALTHY/SEASONAL MENU/CREATIVE CUISINE Alum driving cross-country stopped in Oberlin to eat here again. I tried 1833 in 2018 and enjoyed two great meals while staying at The Hotel. So came this time with expectations and IT WAS GREAT! I started with SQUASH BISQUE with pepitas, crema and Aleppo chili flakes. Warm rich (GF, V) and spicy! Then had a hearty but healthy CHICKEN PARMESAN SANDWICH with mozzarella, pesto on a artisan Kaiser roll. I was hungry but could only manage to eat half. It made a great lunch the next day. The CHILLED PEA SALAD with aged cheddar, bacon, red onion with creamy peppercorn dressing was cold but picante and crispy. The wine list is short but well chosen. I tried a NZ SAUVIGNON BLANC with the Bisque and MALBEC for the Chicken Parmesan. Both wines good examples of their provenance and varietal. The wines, like the food, represented good value for money $8 and $6 respectively. All the food artfully presented and service attentive, informed and pleasant. I was an early fan of this restaurant in the new Oberlin Inn, but a recent visit left me thinking that the place is failing to live up to its own lofty ambitions. It seems like everything was either over- or under-seasoned, overly complicated, or poorly executed. Perch was overcooked. A side dish made from chickpeas was a barely-edible salt bomb. Fried Brussels sprouts were swimming in oil and overly sweetened with syrup. Lamb chops appeared to have been cooked tenderly via sous vide, but somebody forgot to sear or carmelize the exterior, leaving them bland, mushy, and unappealing. The house-made sorbets are fantastic, though. It's still safe to come for french fries and dessert. read more

Overpriced for the portions I know this is supposed to be a fancier style eatery with chef inspired creations but I feel like they are catering more to the parents coming to visit the college than the locals. Food is food the portions are just really small for the price. Recommend one of the sandwiches because at least your belly will be full. read more

This is somewhat of a foo-foo place. Minimalistic setting. With voices echoing throughout the place. The outside structure, outlandish, does not fit in with the town's Mainstreet image. We saw a sign on the main street that said something about it being historically a main street USA. About the food - almost all of our party ordered the hamburger with fries. They were excellent, being charbroiled. I'd say they were the best!! The fries were not too salty and had a slight herb taste to them - not overwhelming. The service was very good. Attentive and not overshadowing. I only gave it 4 stars because the menu was limited to mostly sandwiches. They should be better than a sandwich place. For being foo-foo they should come up with delicious entrees. Not impressed with the food choices. Serving french fries is easy. TOTALLY impressed with this place. Who would think this was a hotel eatery! I ate at least 1 of every meal at 1833, the service was always pleasant, if not quick. I understand that the unusual amount of people threw them, and that's acceptable, the food was never amiss, always prepared well and absolutely delicious. The Ny Strip and 1833 fries were perfect. The steak was succulent the fries crisp and deliciously seasoned, we'd also ordered a side of the mushroom risotto, which was AMAZING. The ham soup, which I had two days in a row, was decadenly delicious. I would eat that every day, if I could. I just wish it were served with bread and butter, that would have made it complete, though the side of brussle sprouts I ordered was very tasty too. For breakfast, I had the Scramble and it too was delicious. Like I said, I had at least one of every meal, and they were amazing, I was never once disappointed. Rosa and Miles were both very accommodating and friendly, they made sure that if you needed anything, they took care of it. Their service was beyond par. The food is very good, but the customer service was absolutely awful. They need to have a consulting team come in and train them on the time it takes to greet a customer, take a customers order, bring a customer their food, and checking on the customer after they get their food. They also need training on remembering that the customer is always more important than anything else they have going on. There were two people trying to figure out how to get the computer at the bar to function. When I walked up no one was at the front desk, no one was answering the phone, and when I asked the two women to help me; they both said separately that they were too busy to take my order. They also said people were ahead of me and they couldn't take my order. I had to come out of my hotel room because they wouldn't answer their phones. Another lady came down and they said the same thing to her. We both stood there confused because the restaurant wasn't full. There weren't many waitresses and waiters running around trying to help people in a frenzy, and there wasn't a line, or a wait, or a host to greet to get into the restaurant. The other lady and I were staying here in the hotel and we just had to-go-orders. Finally the very sweet and only professional employee in the establishment came up to the host stand and very nicely took our orders. My order was ready in less then 12 minutes and when I went down stairs the restaurant was cleared out. One of those ladies who didn't have time to take our order was the supervisor and she not only was rude to other the customer and I, she also spoke very ugly to her employees in front of us. This is not the first time I have seen her speak nasty to her employees. Also, the day before the very nice bartender was making my drink and talking to me, and the head chef came out with paperwork. He felt the need to interrupt our conversation and the bartender making my drink to discuss a discrepancy with the bartenders numbers. Holding him up and keeping me from getting my drink. Once again, it doesn't matter what the restaurant has going on, unless it's a fire or an emergency, take care of the customer first. There won't be a restaurant if you don't have customers. Telling customers that you CAN'T take their order and not even saying we'll be with you in a minute is a definite way to run a customer off, especially during a time when you get your most customers. Food can be amazing but if you don't have great or even good customer service to back it up, your business will suffer. read more

Brunch review. My ladies and I stopped here for our monthly brunch out. We did drive pass this place at first thinking that it didn't fit the traditional hotel look for the area. On the inside it's a very modern and cheerful open space with great use of bright colors. The service was great! I mentioned to the host that we can get a bit loud when we get together so he put us in our own private room, which was fantastic because after having a few of their delicious grapefruit mimosas we got a bit loud. Our server was fun, friendly, knowledgeable, and had great recommendations. I got the biscuits and gravy with a side of scrambled eggs. The sausage gravy was a little heavy on the red pepper taste but I did eat all of it. There was also a wedding party that day so that was enjoyable to spy on as well. While you might find yourself in a small town, the 1833 is one of the few restaurants I which you will find a measure of culture and class to the menu. There isn't an abundance of perfection to their presentation, but the food is a cut above the normal fare you'll find in the area. If you've the chance to dine with a chef that has a vision dominated by the rural nature of his customers then you've found a gem in the restaurant's elegance. The drinks are well done, suited to the menu that offers non traditional options common to the comfort food variety of the region. Given the chance, I often times find this location a comfort within the small town aura and stop here when I'm passing nearby. read more

Really disappointed at what should have been a nice dinner out. While the restaurant tried to make amends with replacing my entrée, that too was poorly served. I tried the bone-in veal chop which was tough and chewy. The waiter recommended the mashed potatoes which were submersed in butter...no, I mean really submersed and bleh...and yes, I like butter. So my veal was replaced with fettuccini alfredo which was a congealed sticky mess. Argh. Two other guests had the pasta pomodoro and it was the same. Espresso was bitter. Creme brulée was good but smothered in too much whipped cream. Yes, I am a cook and picky but this just should have been better. read more

The 1833 restaurant is not worth your time or money. Although it is in a lovely hotel and is airy and bright, its food is decidedly mediocre, its service merely fair, and its staff error prone. Worse than that, its executive chef Jim Barnhardt apparently has no training in customer relations as he self servingly portrayed himself as the victim when I called to complain about an upsetting error on the part of his staff. Nevertheless, since it is the most upscale restaurant in the area, I called months in advance to make a reservations for breakfast and dinner on June 5, 2022, the day of my kid's graduation. Two months before graduation, I called to see if the restaurant had any availability for June 4, my child's birthday, and was told the restaurant was taking no reservations for graduation weekend. Naturally, this came as an unpleasant shock, since I had planned far ahead to ensure that I could take my child to dinner at a convenient location on graduation day. The hotel, itself, made it clear it was not taking reservations graduation weekend. The restaurant staff made no such declaration to me. When I called Mr. Barnhardt to complain and ask what he could do to rectify this restaurant's error, he was unsympathetic, skeptical that I had actually made reservations, and, unbelievably, launched into a speech about how hard his life had been because of the pandemic and what a terrific job he had done to bring the restaurant back to life. He offered no solution to rectify his staff's mistake, made no effort to placate me, and instead chided me for being upset. Hence, I recommend spending your time and money at an establishment that is not so error prone and that has a stronger and more generous sense of customer service. Had a nice visit to Oberlin and decided to have Father's Day brunch at this place. I had the eggs Benedict and a few bloody Mary's to cure a small hangover. The food was great was the service was a bit sluggish and our server was very forgetful. I think she needed my bloody Mary's more then I did. The bar was completely empty yet it took about 15 minutes to each for some sub par Mary's. At one point we had to ask for refills twice on our water and coffee. I'm thinking this will be my first and last time visiting this place. The only thing worth mentioning is the vintage movie theatre across the street! read more

Oberlin has a surprisingly large number of solid restaurants for it being a small city. We live in town and have favorites that we eat at often like Lorenzo's, the Feve, Thini Thai and a few others so hadn't tried 1833 until tonight. I'm surprised at the 3 1/2 stars on Yelp because we had a wonderful carryout meal. It's really nice quality and much of the menu was local/in season. The price makes sense for what they offer & I'm not sure why the portion size is of concern to so many reviewers; we found the portion sizes to be sufficient-- we had the burger, Walleye, Shepard's Pie, Salads & some of the sides & they were all delightfully prepared + filling. 1833 is a great addition to the diverse restaurant offerings in Oberlin! read more

This place has awful service. I was a hotel guest for a wedding this past weekend. We attempted to eat here 3 times for breakfast. We waited in line to be seated for over 30min EACH time an nobody even acknowledged our presence. I don't mind the wait. Especially if it is busy, however, there were empty tables and the fact that we stood there without anyone greeting us (we were the only people in line btw) was extremely rude. In all fairness my wife and I only go at happy hour and always in the bar area, never in the seating area. With that said, you can order anything at the bar and we have tried almost everything on the menu. I would rate the food 8/10. The issue here is service. Enjoyed a late lunch today after we checked into the hotel. The butter lettuce salad with julienned crisp pear, blue cheese and honeyed pecans was excellent. We split the hamburger dressed with cheddar, crispy bacon, aioli, and homemade pickles on brioche - rich but very good the burger came with rosemary and garlic fresh cut fries. I particularly appreciated the carafe of water and plate of lemon and lime wedges that were brought without request. I love lime in my water and it's a rare thing to see in a restaurant. Good food, nicely presented. You can taste the ingredients - mushroom risotto actually tasted of mushrooms (most places all you can taste is parmesan cheese)! Butter lettuce salad wasn't drowned in dressing so I could enjoy the flavors of the greens and toppings. If the crispy Brussels sprouts are on the menu, try them, because they're delicious. The only downside is that it's a rather noisy space - lots of hard surfaces mean that sounds really propagate. Seating is comfortable and not at all crowded, though. read more

Showed up around 5:50 with my girlfriend on a Saturday evening and it was mostly full. Seated and watered promptly; they seem to have learned from the reviews below complaining about slow service, because they asked if we wanted something to drink within two minutes! We shared things for dinner. The black bean burger might have been the best I've ever had (and as a vegetarian, that's sometimes the only choice I have at restaurants). It was crispy, with sweet corn and a garlic aioli I really liked. It came with a heap of shoestring fries (with some fried garlic cloves in there, too, mmm-mmm), which were good but cooled quickly. The fried green tomatoes had a great crunch and came with pimento cheese; not a lot of tanginess, but that's how I like my FGTs. The grilled peach with burrata was tasty and beautifully plated. The goat cheese was good, although the preserves on top were quite sweet. We had the crepe cake for dessert -- loved that, too. Never had one before. Our tab came to barely $50, and that's with a beer and a 20% tip. I think we will come back if in Oberlin again. read more

What an awesome surprise! We arrived late, and there was hardly anyone in the place. But we were immediately very warmly greeted by our host, and the server promptly took our drink orders and answered our questions. It's a strikingly handsome place. Simple furniture, light and airy, and balanced between earthy and modern. The food was phenomenal. We ordered the steak frites, broiled walleye, caesar salad, corn bisque, red pepper linguine, and a side of quinoa pilaf. Everything was cooked to perfection, nicely seasoned, and absolutely scrumptious. The desserts were fantastic--$3 each and served in little parfait glasses. We got the peaches and cream, the chocolate mousse, and coconut mousse. They were just the right sweet ending to an already fabulous meal. Our server was superb. He was very charming, polite, prompt, and checked in with us frequently. We asked him a lot of questions and made several special requests. He remembered everything and made us feel at home. I don't usually bother to post reviews unless I think the average is way off, but this place was SO disappointing. The food was about a 3 (maybe 4 if I were feeling really generous). Everything on the menu sounded good, but everything on the plate was just kind of fine. Nothing really wrong with it, but definitely not special. But the service was ABYSMAL. We arrived at 6:55 for a 7pm reservation. We were the second couple in line at the mostly-unattended host stand. No one spoke to us (as in not a word) until 7:04. I should have figured out how bad things were and just left then, but the reviews all said that the food was terrific, so we waited. We finally got seated at about 7:10. To be clear, the restaurant was NOT crowded or busy. When we finally made it into the dining room, there were four empty tables in addition to ours. I later spoke to the manager when she was passing through, and asked if perhaps the young man working at the host station was new, because he seemed very overwhelmed. She looked at me like I was crazy and said that he'd worked there for a while. Our waitperson took our drink order fairly quickly, but then disappeared for almost ten minutes. Again, I should have just left. By the time she brought our drinks and took our order, it was almost 7:30. And then she disappeared again. We finally got our starter at 7:52. (Deviled eggs--reasonably tasty, but obviously pre-prepared, so there is NO good reason why they took that long.) Then our entrees arrived less than three minutes later. (Which implies that they were probably holding the starter until the entrees were ready. But why would they do that?) And after all that waiting, the food was...meh. Don't waster your money--eat somewhere else. (But if you're from out of town, DO stay at the attached hotel! The rooms are beautiful and the beds are super comfortable!) read more
