This place is amazing. We came as a group from California and we were looking for a good steak and pasta place. This was the best our flank steak was tender and cooked to perfection. The asparagus was cooked perfectly and the appetizers were delicious. Highly recommended. read more

Ordered carry out -- chicken parm sandwich with fries and the berry salad -- it was just ok, not worth the $$$. The fries were undercooked, the chicken sandwich was nothing remarkable. The salad wasn't anything great either. A lot of hard stems on the greens. read more

Really enjoyed our meal here--lots of local seafood options as well as vegetarian and vegan food. The cocktails were out of this world. We found the atmosphere a bit lacking--lights too bright, art questionable--but the service and food more than made up for it. The Brussel sprout appetizer is a must try--certainly the most amazing version of this food I have ever had--crispy, sweet, and savory all in one bite. read more

Out of draft beer at 5pm on Saturday. Wedding going on upstairs super loud. Tables littered with food and trash for my entire visit. Cheese curds had no flavor. Asked for the burger with no pickles and fries. Burger had pickles. Also had an onion jam that I did not care for. Two stars because the fries were very good and the waiter was doing his best. read more

Just paid $4.50 for a take out coffee Wait staff had no idea what they were doing Waiting for 10 minutes before anyone even showed up Quoted $3 and then rang up $4.50 for a 1/4 cup of coffee Never going back!!! read more

Make sure you have plenty of time to spare. Our waitress disappeared for 30 minutes, apparently her boss was having a meeting with her. It even took the busboy 10 minutes to find her. Since they remodeled the acoustics are horrible. You can hardly hear the person sitting across from you. read more

We just had dinner here and can't say enough great things about this place. The service was perfect- the drinks were fantastic - and the food was AMAZING ! We had a variety of small plates - each one unique and delicious ( my favorite being grilled peaches and shrimp and grits). The chef made a point of stopping by each table and even showcased many of the locally sourced ingredients. We had a LOVELY experience . Highly recommend it ! read more

Was there with a group celebrating birthdays. Wonderful contemporary atmosphere. Wait staff very attentive. Food outstanding. Shrimp Grits just outstanding a true taste of the South! Everyone loved their dishes. Vegan and gluten free friendly. Comprehensive wine and cocktail menu. Try the homemade ice cream. read more

This was my first visit to this new restaurant. Service was excellent! We had a great waiter! While he of course, was newly hired; he was professional, friendly and checked back with us frequently to ensure that our needs were met. The atmosphere was somewhat cold and sterile. Not warm and cozy like the previous Oberlin Inn. I had the Caesar salad. The croutons were excellent but the salad and dressing was not enjoyable for my palate. My husband had the lamb chops which he described as tasty but not filling. The portions were small. The price was a little high for the portion of food. I will go back and try the breakfast before removing this from my list of places to eat. read more

We had brunch there to celebrate two birthdays. The food was really good there and the hosts are quite inviting. But the service was super slow and not so friendly. Plus the place had no distinct vibe to it. They do have a varied menu that may warrant a return though; not too sursc read more

An exceptional dining experience! The hotel and restaurant are new, but the dining experience felt as though they'd been doing this for years. A very clean dining room with a flair for the modern and a menus that leans on traditional but updates and elevates the classics. Seasonal and prepared perfectly, the entire menu is worth your time! read more

Went here for breakfast and the food was actually very good. The prices are a tad high and the atmosphere is a bit stuffy for my taste , but all in all it was a nice experience. They seem to be low on staff , so the waitress forgot a few things , nothing major. Give it a try . read more

Very creative menu with a minimalist atmosphere. Had a bit of trouble locating -- it's in the spanking new hotel with the crane and mud still on site. We ordered Caesar salad, beet salad, steamed bbq buns, duck appetizer, local goat cheese, and Reuben soup. All were outstanding. little desserts in little mason jars were cute -- though the trifle a little dry, and the bread pudding a little overwhelmed by all the caramel. Very worth the few minutes detour on the way to Cleveland. read more

The menu looks great! Wish we had a chance to try it. My husband, myself, our son and two friends of ours came in on a Friday night around 7 for dinner, the man at the host stand asked how many people we had (5). The host went and got another server and then they both proceeded to stare at the five of us for an awkward amount of time whispering to each other. Eventually they said "we don't have anywhere to put you". They did not give us a wait time or any other solution at all. So we all left. It was very strange. I felt so uncomfortable I probably won't ever try to go back. read more

I was really excited to eat at 1833 because of the high ratings and interesting menu. But the service was terrible and the food was truly nothing special. We had a five/ten minute wait for a table even though we HAD A RESERVATION! Then, it was another five minutes until our waiter came to the table, and ten minutes until we got our drinks (a bottle of wine and a simple cocktail--no rocket science there). We waited about forty minutes for our food... even for the starter, deviled eggs, which are prepared and should not have taken much time at all. Once the food came, it was disappointing. My entree was too salty and lacked acid, and the potatoes were nothing like the description on the menu. Had the food been great, I could perhaps have overlooked how AWFUL the service was, but it wasn't. Spend your money elsewhere. read more

Visited 1833 last evening for the first time with friends for Lorain County's Restaurant Week. Casual establishment...very comfortable atmosphere. We started with a few appetizers...deviled eggs, fresh bread with dipping oil and a yummy whipped butter and the brussel sprouts. All were delicious...the brussel spouts were amazing!!!!. Two of us ordered from the Restaurant Week Fixed Price Menu...we chose the lamb as our main entree and started this course with the offered salad and 5-onion soup. Soup was delicious...salad good as well. Lamb chops came perfectly cooked to a medium rare with a pistachio crust, baby carrots and a delicious parsnip puree and balsamic drizzle. We were both VERY happy with our order!!! Finished with the 15 layer berry crepe dessert...YUM! Others ordered from the menu...salmon, beef stroganoff ,filet, creme brulee and bread pudding and all were satisfied. Tish, our server was wonderful and very knowledgeable about the menu. As far as we could tell she was the only server taking orders and given the amount of people in the restaurant she did a great job!! The chef came to our table to make sure we were satisfied with our meals...very nice! All-in-all would definitely return...only gave 4 stars because service was a bit slow since Tish seemed to be the only one waiting tables. Not a complaint about her...she did a great job all things considered! We all appreciated; however, that the food did come out on top of each other and we were able to enjoy all of our courses. Definitely recommend! read more

A fabulous find in Oberlin! First of all, you need to be someone who likes to try new things and understands the art of cuisine. Four of us ordered two different dishes each and no one was disappointed. Grilled watermelon--who knew? So sweet, so perfectly balanced with feta and pistachios. Then grilled peaches --the grill marks caramelized the peach! The lemon raviolis were stuffed with a light ricotta and topped with lemon zest. We also had the Steak Frites, Deviled Eggs, Red Pepper Fettucine and Fried Green Tomatoes. Each was wonderfully surprising in flavor! Our waiter was friendly and we were seated right away. The atmosphere is eclectic--don't let that stop you from enjoying a great meal. The size of the plates might be considered to be modest by some standards but remember, you aren't here to gorge yourself, you are here to enjoy a meal made by a talented staff. read more

Tonight was our second time dining at 1833, we went for Valentines Day as well. The staff is friendly and the food is awesome. Apparently they change their menu because it was a little different since our last visit. However, everything we have tasted from the restaurant was been so good. We will definitely continue coming here!! read more

Went to the bar at 1833 after working my shift bartending at a nearby establishment. It was about 1030pm and there were several tables and people sitting at the bar, so I didn't feel too bad about coming in close to closing (11pm) for one drink. I sat at the bar with a coworker and waited. The bartender (Laura or Lauren) gave us the evil eye that I, as a bartender, know well... it was close to closing, I get it. Five minutes passed with nothing but the initial glare we received upon entering. Ten minutes passed. I could have been almost done with my drink by then, a lady came up to the bar & asked for water she received her water. Finally 15 minutes after we sat down she said " so what you guys want beer, wine?" My friend ordered Bulliet with butterfly wings and she refused to make it! Unbelievable! By then it was ten minutes till 11 and I just left. My friend who stayed behind says he got a beer. Never had such bad service! read more

Loved the salad with the walnuts, pears and blue cheese. The smoked trout however - was a huge disappointment because it was just a piece of trout (quite dry) on a plate with the (soft) cheese, toast and pickled beets sitting beside it. IF they had made a smoked trout dip - the trout would have been more moist. It was very difficult trying to balance all of it on the toast for each bite - awkward! read more

Another excellent meal at 1833. Don't usually post reviews but the place is worth knowing about. Had the Eggplant Parmesan tonight which was excellent and unusual. Best I ever had. Awesome service, nice atmosphere and great food. read more

1833, the restaurant at the Hotel at Oberlin, finally gives the Oberlin diner a first-rate dining experience. The Oberlin food scene has been developing over the past several years, but so far, restaurants in this college town have failed to manage the trifecta of delicious food, first-rate service, and a well-designed modern setting. The food is billed as American, and in this case, as appropriate to Oberlin, that means well-prepared, locally-raised produce used in simple, imaginative preparations. The menu offers a well-selected variety of meats and fish, supplemented with surprisingly delicious vegetarian and vegan offerings. As in the former Oberlin Inn, where the new hotel stands, breakfast is sure to be popular, especially with its first-rate Benedict with speck ham served with a delicious, simple greens, beautifully dressed with a white balsamic vinaigrette. At lunchtime, the Reuben is a stand-out,as is the forest mushroom melt. The dinner menu offers imaginative starters, like the goat-cheese small plate with fig crackers, green-pea ravioli with grapefruit, and beet carpaccio on a bed of arugula. The real surprise is the pricing. The most expensive of the entrees are $15-16 for lamb, duck, or a stunning walleye fillet. The drinks menu features prohibition-era classic cocktails and a good selection of mostly Californian wines. The dining room captain is knowledgeable and happy to explain the selections. The bar area outside the restaurant has already attracted a following. read more

So let me say the food is good but they try to be way to "fancy" and it falls short. Taste and presentation was fine. But we stood waiting for a table while the bartender wiped glasses. He sat the people in front of us. Saw us. Went and wiped a couple of glasses at the bar then sat us. Ok odd. Not the best first impression. Then we get menus. Ordered the bead appetizer. The bread was good but the butter it was served with was so heavily salted I couldn't eat it. Over the top try...just serve real butter. So then I order their burger choice. Looked good. Waitress goes "we are out of buns, would you like it on bread?" Um, no...who runs out of buns in the middle of Oberlin? Go to a store. Gibson's is right down the street if you have to source locally. Ridiculous. I ordered the fish. It was good but again a lot of salt in the sauce. I like salt! I tend to put it on a lot of stuff. If it's too much for me you're not being an upscale restaurant you're using too much salt. Atmosphere left a lot to be desired as well. They try too hard to be a fancy restaurant and need to concentrate on e basics. Overall would not go there again. For the price it was way overrated. read more

Dinner Service is lacking. Sat for 20 minutes before offered a drink. Did not offer new drinks when we were empty. Now at breakfast have to ask for milk with coffee. Ask for spoon to stir. They brought cream not milk and sent it back but no milk for 10 minutes. Food was okay. Pork chop was oversalted. Breakfast corn beef hash was lukewarm. read more

My family and I visited 1833 yesterday afternoon and had a wonderful experience. Not only was our server beyond accommodating, the food was on point. My Dad, who often has horrible dining experiences, ordered the burger, and I quote, said, "This is the best burger I've ever had." We all enjoyed our Turkey Reubens and had a wonderful time. Your restaurant is and will be a place we will continue to recommend and enjoy. Thank you! read more

We stayed at the Inn for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. It was the first time I've seen the new Inn vs. what I knew growing up in Oberlin. The service is lacking. We had to ask twice to get our order taken. Our server was a young kid and he barely spoke to us. The rest of the staff were pretty friendly, they just need a little time to get more polished. The restaurant is new and shiny, but just lacks pizzazz that I would expect in Oberlin. You usually get a homey feeling in Oberlin, and it's a little sterile there. I had the Chorizo hash, and my husband had the Plain Jane. Being that we came from the southwest, I was expecting something a lot different with the chorizo. It wasn't horrible, but it looked more like ground beef than traditional chorizo. There was no spice or taste. The eggs were good and bacon was okay. My husband thought his food was okay, but a little bland. I have family that's local, and they recommended other restaurants on Main street, which were better. I'm sure they'll get into a groove with service eventually, but it should be substance over hip and modern style. read more

Don't let the diner decor fool you: the food here is perhaps the best in Oberlin. We enjoyed the butternut squash soup and colorful spinach salad, duck confit ravioli and hazelnut crusted chicken. All of it nicely presented by attentive staff. Unfortunately, the decor, which emulates an everyday kitchen stocked from ikea, and the blue jeans dress of the staff are distinctly out of sync with the high quality of the food. read more

Had dinner and breakfast in August, 2016. Staff were still getting their sea legs, but service was OK and dining was good. Nice to have some additional choice in Oberlin. read more

Went for Lorain County Restaurant week. Excellent drinks-had the Manhatten and the Bulleit Butterfly. Kudos for real Luxardo cherries. Opener of grilled veggies- good flavor esp. the cream bleu cheese with beets, asparagus good though skimpy serving amount. Beef veg soup was excellent. Was crying for some bread to go with but none available/none served which was a real miss considering the price of the meal. Entree of flat iron steak very good, tender and perfectly done with good potatoes. Green sauce unnecessary. Great coffee sourced from Six Shooter. Desserts a miss-creme brulee too pudding-like and served in narrow jar that minimized the caramelized sugar surface area. Also had the bread pudding with the sea salt ice cream- again presented in the little jar making it difficult to eat and way to cloyingly sweet. All in all a nice meal with some high and low spots. Not likely to go back considering what we got for the price but would be a nice place to stop in for a drink. Our server was excellent. read more

We were so disappointed.......had to ask the waitress to read the specials, she wasn't going to! They never brought us bread, now mind you everything is A la Carter....but you have to pay for bread! When I walk into a restaurant the first thing that says welcome is a basket of bread....no way! You had to pay $4.00, so cheap of this place! Yet they put butter plates on your table! The service was terrible, when she took our order she didn't even ask us if we wanted a salad! Nothing! The restaurant wasn't busy at all! We waited forever for the bill! She brought it and put it in front of me like I was paying for both of us! I asked her to please bring us separate bills and than I asked her if they had deserts. She said yes and I said to her, why didn't you ask us if we wanted any, she apologized and said she forgot! Than the manager came and I told him about the bread! He told us they bought a specialty bread and it was costly, so they could not afford to serve it with the meal! I would never go back to this place again, plus the atmospheric is totally sterile! read more
