We adore living in Huron, and we adore our locally owned restaurants, with staff who feel like family -- that is 100% Bar North. Situated on the Thunderbird Hills golf course, Bar North is an oasis in the summer -- sitting on the patio, watching the golfers make their way up 18. In the winter, it's still an oasis, due to the wall of windows overlooking the course, bringing in lots of light. If you're up for a cocktail or glass of wine, you're in luck -- they have a fairly extensive, and inventive, craft cocktail menu, and nice wine selection..... and bottomless mimosas on Sunday with their new brunch menu. Let's get to the food -- Hayley Palmer, owner (along with husband, Todd) and general manager does a wonderful job of rotating menu items seasonally, and is committed to "from scratch" food. The seared Ahi Tuna appetizer is a favorite, as are all the Flatbreads. Their soups are homemade and wonderful; burgers are excellent; they do a beautiful job with steak, and have creative weekly specials that range from fish to pasta. The salads may be the best in town, with more unusual choices like warm bacon and spinach (with a warm bacon and balsamic dressing -- yum!!!); beet salad and Cobb salad. On Sunday, their new brunch menu is also unique, and tasty. I loved the Italian Hash. Dessert? The brownie dessert could feed a small crowd and is delicious; the crème brûlée has been a staple since their opening. As a celiac, I have to navigate somewhat carefully, because there is not a dedicated fryer, and there is some cross-contamination in the kitchen. But they are aware and really try to work with me! Nice bar/restaurant with a great cocktail and wine menu. They have daily specials as well. I stopped in for drinks and a light dinner. Caesar salad and grouper bites made for a nice summer meal. We went on the Tuesday night where they the special of $10 off bottles of wine. The weather was perfect outside and the service was amazingly nice, polite, and so great to us in bringing out crackers with the wine. The food did not take too long in the kitchen, but we had some salads in the interim to hold us over in waiting for the main entrees. Most of my table got sandwiches and everything came out hot and ready. The service was always very attentive and helpful in picking out good food choices. There were barely any leftovers to take home with us and they even were nice enough to take time out of their day to help us take a few nice photos. read more

We were stranded in Huron because our bus load of 30+ Field Hockey players and coaches had a bus malfunction. We called Bar North and they immediately allowed us to crash their beautiful Golf Club and fed us with kindness, patience and perseverance!!! New Years eve dinner with four couples. Ordered one of the special dinners for the evening which was halibut with a delicious squash puree. But the halibut was overcooked. Requested starter sauce since the fish was so dry. We were charged $1 for starter sauce on a $44 entre. Definitely underwhelming. read more

Best food in Huron. The tuna dish is spot-on, listed as an appetizer, but for me, an entree. Sandwiches and burgers are nicely prepared and served hot and the selections will suit most appetites. We went to Bar North in Huron, OH last night and found the food was quite disappointing. We ordered the appetizer Group Bites and found them to be to be very rubbery and chewy. Two of us ordered the Sea Bass. One entry smelled fishy and covered in salt and the other was over cooked and dry. It seems their seafood is old. I ordered the Steak Tip Marcella, and the steak tips were past well done and chewy and had a lot of fat. This dish was also over salted. The service was very good. I would not recommend this restaurant and will not return. They do not have any quality control in their kitchen. read more

As parents of a 17 year old, 6 year old and 2 year old (long story), we don't get to dine out very often. Even less as an "adults only" affair. Lo and behold, some good friends invited us out as they had arranged a sitter for their kids so we forced the 17 year old to "watch" the younger two. Having never been to Bar North before, I didn't know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere of it not being an actual bar. Yes, there is a bar but it's more upscale for lack of a better word. TV's were plentiful which made watching the buckeyes enjoyable while we dined. I perused the menu and settled on the Italian flatbread for an appetizer. I chose the special fort my entree which was Mediterranean Sea Bass accompanied by asparagus and roasted red potatoes. My wife opted for the spinach salad with grilled chicken. The flatbread was pretty good although not a true flatbread. It was more of a tortilla topped with sausage, banana peppers and fresh basil. It was good though extremely flimsy. Can't say I'd order it again as it did not meet the definition of flatbread. My sea bass was just ok. I'm not a fan of the skin being left on fish that's being served to me. It leads to a stronger fishy taste which is not what sea bass should taste like. There's no benefit to cooking it that way either. It's merely for presentation which is a fail because it tends to ruin the dish. As for the sides, they were really good. It was a very small portion of asparagus but cooked to my preference. The potatoes were outstanding. My wife's salad was on par with any other spinach salad I've ever seen. She neither complained nor raved about it. It was sufficient. Service was good enough. Definitely not over the top and no where near being bad. It was just right in my opinion. All in all it was a good experience. I'd like to give four stars but my meal just wasn't good enough to warrant it. Perhaps our next visit could change my score. read more

Bar North is a great place for great food. My wife and I found this place after frequenting our other "go-to's" far too often. Once we ate here, we were hooked. This is a perfect atmosphere for a date night. Also, Madelynn is by far our favorite server and she makes sure to go the extra mile for her patrons. Make sure to give the Bar North burger a shot. Service is below average. Food is just okay, but overpriced. Only thing they have going for them is the location and the repeat customers coming in after golf or locals. If you sit at the bar you'll usually have to ask for your next drink - the bartenders are not observant when it comes to the empty glass in front of you. Table service is much better but the kitchen can be slow on a busy night. They get two stars from me because their drink menu is very good. They do run decent daily specials. Wonderful food in a serene setting. This place has amazing, locally sourced food and they always offer great specials. I don't live in the area, but whenever I'm home, this is a must-dine! They have specials just about every night of the week (martini night, burger night, etc...) and the food is always better than expected. The devil's on horseback are amazing, the soups are always great, as are the calamari and the flat breads. I've never had a bad meal and I'm always pleasantly surprised by the diversity of the menu. Tried to eat here on Friday night. Walked in, maybe 6-8 tables open. Was informed of a 40 minute wait. Ok, no biggie, we will just eat at the bar which had no less than 10 stools open. We were informed that we could sit at the bar, but would still have to wait the 40 minutes to order. What?!?! I've never heard of such a stupid rule!!! The quality and menu selection keep going down in an effort by management to cut food costs at the expense of customer satisfaction. They are too cheap to even give our group bread. We were in this restaurant on a Tuesday, not the busiest day of the week, but the service was excruciatingly slow. My husband and I ordered Prime Sirloin, done medium. The outside was cooked, the inside was raw. We send them back. The waitress was back with our plates, with green beans (raw) and potatoes: compliments of the lady chef... By the time our food arrived again (with more raw green beans and potatoes), everyone had finished eating. And the meat was cardboard-like cooked! I asked the waitress to tell the cook how terrible the food was. She came back to tell us the manager (who never showed his/her face!) took my food off the bill. Incidentally, we had made reservations for a group of nine and asked, if possible, for a quieter place so we could talk. We sat in a small room; but the only other table was suddenly occupied by a family with three hysterical brats who screamed, cried and made so much noise we could not hear each other. And this despite the fact that there were several open tables in the restaurant. And, the cherry on top: hard, uncomfortable chairs! Now, that's a place we will never visit again. read more

Horrible manager/supervisor service. Wanted to seat outside which the patio was open. Took a table with umbrella, our server helped us set it up. But then the manager came out and told us that we could only seat under the covered patio and made us move. What's the difference you'll ask? Well, I still have no idea... she told us the "patio where the umbrellas are" was closed for the night and if we were to seat there other people would want too and they'd have too few waiters for it. Well, how about bring the waiters from the inside to serve on the patio?! I think it was just her trying to prove her point which obviously costed them a customer. Went here on a Thursday and it was "burger night." We sat on the patio overlooking the 18th hole at Thunderbird and it has some great evening sun & shade. We started dinner with devils on horseback; DELICIOUS! I had a bacon and bleu burger that was great, while my wife enjoyed a buffalo chicken burger. The chicken could have had a bit more flavor to match the buffalo sauce, but it was very good overall. The star of the night was the sweet potato fries. They were covered in cinnamon sugar and our waitress offered us apple butter for dipping. OH MAN was that good! We'll definitely be back. read more

Stopped with another couple to have dinner and was told that outside seating was an hour wait and 20 minutes inside. As I looked around and saw at least 10 tables available I asked if all of these tables were reserved. She said no the kitchen needs to catch up. So we left and spent our money at I 5's. We were seated immediately outside and bonus there is a band playing in the boat basin. I called Bar North back and asked for a Manager and James the Manager wasn't available. I asked for a call back. The owner should know that people wanting to spend money were turned away. Not good. This is my second disappointing experience. And it's ashamed because we have visited many many times and really enjoyed our food and service. Not sure I nor my friends will go back. read more

We always enjoy coming to Bar North but the last few times we have been there we have had problems with the kitchen! the kitchen gets backed up and we end up waiting over an hour for the meal to be served! On one occasion we were permitted to be seated at a table but could not receive menus or order for an hour-we were crazy to stay!! The food is good when you receive it. read more
