I love everything this small women owned business stands for and has to offer . The staff is always friendly and whenever I get my hair done I am always guided in a step by step conversation around the process and transparency around what is achievable / versus what might not be (and if it's not achievable there's always a convo around things that could look similar or steps we can take to move in that direction). I've never left the salon not loving the way my hair looks. As far as pricing goes , you get what you pay for . I haven't been to the Gilded Lily since my last review, so about 4-5 years now, but I am always reminded of how good my hair looked when I was a client there when I look back and old photos and in the mirror LOL! Since then, I have moved to East Coast and seen many stylists all over the east coast from Manhattan to Brooklyn, Staten Island, and Queens, Connecticut, and up and down New Jersey; I still have not had better color or a better cut than when my hair was in Dani's hands. I find myself still using my old hair photos from when Dani did my hair as inspo for every stylist I have seen and say "oh I want that" and sadly no one ever gets it right. Close but never right. The Gilded Lily is an excellent salon. The vibe is very relaxed and casual (I appreciate all of the plants). They offer little services, as achievable during COVID, such as warm or cold eye towels while color is processing. I love seeing my girl Tracy. She has taken my hair from very red to blonde. My hair has a lot of red tones, and I've never been able to keep it from getting brassy after a few months. Tracy has armed with me with knowledge on how to take care of my color and hair so that it lasts and looks good until my next visit. Since I have been seeing her and following her advice, I noticed some of my hair has grown back. I also appreciate that she is open and flexible to my budget and time between sessions. However, I also enjoy going in and being taken care of by Tracy. So I keep going back. I saw a few reviews about the pricing in terms of color. I would say if you want to ensure your hair color is quality and lasts, the prices are accurate for color services and the talent in a market like Chicago. Someone said they could have used Sun In and saved money, and I can assure you that is not an educated statement (speaking from experience as someone who wrecked their hair using Sun In at age 16). read more

I do not recommend this place to anyone. I had done a lot of research and was really excited to try this place out, but all I had gained from it was a horrible experience and two sessions because they completely botched the first session. Wasted so much time and money going here. But the worst part is that my hair health is completely shot. Their incompetence has completely ruined my hair health and I now have had to spend even more money to try and get it back to somewhat normal hair health. The only "pro" about my experience is that I went there literally right before the city and my workplace shut down for covid lock down. So luckily no one had to see in person how god awful they botched my hair :) I had come in for a balayage and asked for warm honey tones and NO ash tones. The first rendition was a disaster with NO blending done, and ashy colors all around. When I was checking out they asked me how I liked it and I said it was fine --but on the inside I wanted to cry my eyes out. I'm sure many women have felt like this walking out of a salon, and were too embarrassed and shy to actually say "this is horrible please fix it". Yet when I emailed the owner she pointed very accusatory about how I said it was fine when I was leaving. Well yes, I said it was fine because I didn't want to embarrass your stylist right in front of her face and I was also embarrassed at how god awful you made me look and feel. So I got home and immediately got infront of the mirror to see if it looks any better in normal light and with me looking at it at different angles. Nope, still horrible. So I called and emailed them and sent them photos and they said I can come back for a correction. I immediately go in again same day (so 4 total Uber rides to a neighborhood very far from me) and the girl that did my hair the first time was the one correcting it and she made me feel so uncomfortable coming back again. No apology, no explanation, just dead silence while she worked on her fix. Truly the worst customer service experience. I also now have breakage all around the upper middle part of my head. Just a random ring of hair that was clearly ripped off. This happened when she was rinsing my hair and was not using a wet brush. She said she was trying to get the tangled out because she teased my hair a lot while doing the balayage. Lady, use a wet brush so you don't rip people's hair out!!! I was wincing in pain the whole rinse time and I TOLD her it was hurting me. End result= breakage all around and it's going to take me years to grow it all back. I'm most angry about this. Overall, I would tell people to run away and go anywhere else than here. read more

She was at a different salon that I could walk to in West Town and I followed her all the way up to Logan Square because she is THAT GOOD. The space is modern, inviting, and green - as in there are gorgeous plants and succulents throughout. And the music is on point (not loud and in your face - sometimes you just want to chill while getting your hair done). They use Kevin Murphy products (among others) - which are the best. It is a rather pleasant environment--nothing extraordinary--but my visit there for cut and color took 3.75 hours & the total cost was a totally surprising $400 + tip. The salon's receptionist emailed me that the next time I come it will cost around $600 because "I took a lot of time!". Btw I have very short hair. This salon has been amazing during the pandemic/reopening. For obvious reasons they cancelled my appointment. But they were very nice about reaching out as soon as things reopened. Staff is very knowledgeable about safety precautions. I have a baby at home and was unsure about exposing myself to the community, but they made me feel very safe. First time I came to the salon, I had years of damage from home treatments. It took them a few months to bring my hair back to life, which is how I know they knew what they were doing. I have had services by several people (Mallory, Dani and Genesys) and they have all been excellent. I love how clean it is and the complimentary coffee is a nice touch. When you step into this salon, the first thing you notice is how pretty it is. It's got this modern chic aesthetic, it's so clean, and it's clearly been well-planned. Everything feels intentional. The next thing you notice is how nice everyone is. They're clearly friends with each other, and friendly with you too. It's so refreshing and relaxing to step into that kind of atmosphere! I remember during my first appointment that it felt like the first time I'd had time to sit down and breathe in a while. It helps that Mal, Dani, and Genesys are all absolute masters of their craft. And over the last year and a half, I have continued to go back to them for my color treatments and haircuts. Mal was the one who gave me my "big chop" post wedding and literally made it possible for me to focus and encourage my natural waves! I feel so good about my hair, even now as we are a month into the lockdown and I'm a solid 3 months past my last appointment. She listened well to what I was looking for during my first consultation and informed me of the process. I was able to book an appointment the next day. All I can say is WOW! I've been going to the owner of Gilded Lily, Mallory, for almost 9 years now and have followed her from previous salons because she is, quite simply, the best in Chicago! Not only is she great at what she does (cut and color), but she's knowledgeable, easy to talk to, and always gives me the best advice--especially as I have...um...aged with her and pesky grays started popping up. With color and balayage, she has keep me blonde and youthful and I always get compliments on my hair. Little over two years ago I started going to Gilded Lily because my previous hair girl started working there. She eventually transitioned to solely doing men's cuts and it made sense for her to then transfer to a popular barbershop. After she left I had the chance to work with Dani C. You know when you don't need to explain much, but the other person still delivers what you needed and more? Dani does that on the regular - monthly. Yes I go monthly - you see, I'm 33 and I started getting grey hairs at 16. It's a line item in my yearly budget - that's how consistent I have to be. Also - I have long, thick, heavy hair that is a deep, medium brown. Greys can be intrusive - mentally for me. Some hair colorists don't understand the chemistry of covering thick grey hair growth, but Dani understands their tricky nature. Dani also realized that my hair needs dimension, so I don't feel too boring and flat. I can't tell you how many compliments I receive regarding my stylized ombré - this is because it is straightforward perfection. It's like a painted watercolor, soft but markedly impressive. I should also note that I am not a person who blow drys my hair, it takes too long and honestly, I'm lazy. Dani gets that I needs a specific stylized cut that allows me hair to air dry just right. If you have ever have a service with Dani - you'll never go anywhere else. Her work is hands down excellent. She's always positive, happy and she just has a natural vibe that is relaxing to those around her. You can tell she enjoys what she does and where she works. This totally matters. Gilded Lily is impeccably clean, which reflects its ownership. Gilded Lily is owned by Mal, Dani's best friend and fellow stylist. Mal is kind, chill and really has fostered an environment that is not only service oriented, but naturally warm and inviting.
