I did get a call back from the restaurant yesterday, but was driving and couldn't take the call.

I am a frequent customer at The Gateway Tavern and was extremely disappointed in my most recent trip here. Typically the food and service are excellent, however that was not the experience in my most recent visit. I went on a Friday night and it was pretty steady. Our waitress was Dawn. I know she has been a server/bartender at the establishment for a while. She greeted us pretty quickly when we sat down and brought over waters. We ordered some appetizers and food at the same time and had to ask for bread when she came back with our drinks from the bar. I shouldn't have to ask for it when it is something every other server brings over right away without asking for it. Our appetizers came out very quickly but they were not brought to the table by Dawn. A food runner brought them and we had to ask her for some extra napkins and anything else we needed at the time. Dawn never came over to check on our apps to make sure they were made to our liking or that we had everything we needed. She was too busy visiting other tables and sitting down and chatting with customers. I was extremely disappointed and frustrated to see this happening while we sat with empty drinks and waiting for our entrees to come out, which took an extremely long time. We didn't order anything that required an extra-long time to cook. In fact, the table that sat after us and ordered after us got their food first. While we sat and waited, Dawn NEVER came over to check on us. The food runner/bus girl came to the table and brought us a to-go box to put our appetizer that we did not finish in. Finally after a very long wait, our food was delivered... you guessed it NOT by Dawn. She was sitting at some table and chatting it up. Our food was luke warm, and had obviously been sitting in the window for a long period of time waiting to be delivered to our table. The new beef tacos my husband got were full of refried beans and very little beef. It was almost like it should have been a bean taco not a beef taco. We had to scrape off the ridiculous amount of beans in each taco and he scooped what little beef was on top back into the soft shells (please see attached picture of the refried beans that we scooped off... that is from ONE taco not all three). Dawn never came over to see if we were all set with our meals or if they were good. The most we saw her at the table was when she came by to grab our dinner plates after we were finished and to give us the check. A good server would have looked down at the plate and realized that most of the food was scraped off and would have asked if we didn't like something. The only thing she asked was if we wanted to have dessert. She was quick to drop the check and pick it up - because she wanted the money for the tip and the table to turn over. I NEVER leave less than 20% for a tip ever, and typically I leave more because I worked in the restaurant business, however Dawn did not deserve 20%. If she spent as much time serving her tables and being attentive to her customers as she did sitting at tables and shooting the sh*t with her friends, she would have earned her 20% or more. If I ever come back to have dinner here, I will make sure I do not sit with Dawn. read more

Ok, so let me first say that I gave it only gave 1 stars not for the quality of food. I recently went to The Gateway Tavern with another couple who have been there several times, our first. The menu was full of choices too many but finally made my choice. I ordered the Trio, haddock, scallops and shrimp and 2 sides (not important). We also ordered the drinks Scorpion Bowl and a Porch Ponder as well as appetizers.. So our meal arrives by our waitress Brittney (very nice), my friend ordered the same as me. I was looking over my plate and asked if she had shrimp on hers? She stated no, me either (ordered the Trio, remember?), told the waitress she came back and stated they had run out of shrimp.....ummmm, ok so why weren't we told, she said she didn't know. After a while of being a bit disgruntled by the fact no one said this but was still charging us the full price I asked for a manager. This is where it went downhill. She finally came to our table being a bit defensive and full of body language, said " so, you wanted to talk to me?" I told her the issue, she said the waitress should have said something, (I don't think she knew), complained about the staff being " shitty " on Mondays, and, just didn't except the responsibility that a manger should. She said we were the first to say anything, (how many others paid for a trio and got a duo?). We'll she said "what if I take 5.00 off, ummmm WHAT?? so your just covering that you screwed me shrimp? With the amount they charge and the amount of people there on 4th of July weekend, it should have been taken off completely (know that I don't go for free meals but whats right is right.) She did nothing but complain about the staff on Mondays and said I'll take 10.00 off. Well with that we said ok and paid our bill and left. Her attitude toward her staff saying they are shitty on Mondays and she usually don't work that day??? What does that have to do with you were NOT going to tell us your charging us full price with out a part of our meal! Just so "Joanne" the manager knows we did in fact tell this waitress "Brittney" what she said about Mondays staff!!!! JOANNE should not be a manager if she can't make it so her customers don't leave upset, I was a retail manager for 32 years and this should have been handled much more appropriately by her, and discreetly so as the other patrons didn't know what was happening. SO IF WE DIDN'T NOTICE OR SAY ANYTHING, THEY WOULD HAVE DONE NOTHING AND MADE MONEY. SHAME ON YOU, SHAME ON YOU!!!! read more

We visited here last evening on a tip from a friend... And we were not disappointed!!! From the fresh bread with dipping oil, to the delicious scallops wrapped in bacon (8 of them!!), to the crab cake dinner and shrimp scampi, and then to the lemonberry mascarpone, everything was delivered promptly and did not disappoint!! In addition, their drinks are huge and reasonably priced, and our server was friendly and efficient! It was absolutely pouring out, but we sat on the back patio which has a roof and those plastic roll-down walls... We were still getting a little wet, but it was warm and the view was cool so we didn't mind. I would love to try it again on a sunny day! I'd definitely recommend this place!! read more

Consistently good, fresh food. Extensive menu means that there are hits and misses - specials are really creative but occasionally odd in execution, like seared sesame tuna paired with a side of butternut squash? For the most part, however, I have left full and happy! Good burgers, amazing giant lobster roll (even at $24 well worth the price and a good value considering how much meat is in this thing), big salads with freshly grilled toppings and consistent prompt and friendly service make this a place I am always glad to head back to. read more

Met friends here last night and we all agreed that there is no reason to return. There are lots of others here that also mention the volume for value and it is off terribly. Only one person got a meal and it was just a hamburger, the rest of us just got drinks and appetizers. The bill at the end of the night was more than real meals at other restaurants. This is also a place that you can tell the food is all off loaded frozen from a truck and just heated up for you. Nasty pre-cooked re-heated factory food. We also found it very dark and dreary and overly loud, but the main shocker was the bill at the end of the night. read more

The Gateway is great and it has a huge menu! Tons of choices and I haven't had a bad meal there. My only complaint would be with the out door seating they had during the summer, the location is sort of a wooded area so there are a TON of bugs around. If you sit inside though, you will have a great experience. read more

Where do I start, a group of 5 co-workers decided to try Gateway Tavern for dinner on 8/8/12, big mistake! We should have stuck with Ella's or Piper Beaus, were the service and food are good! It took our waitress 20 minutes just to take a drink order, and no it was not that busy. It then took her another 25 minutes to bring the drinks, at the least she should have brought the waters and waited for the drinks form the bar. She seemed very nice just disorganized. Only half came out, we waited for the other half before starting eat which meant our food was now cold after the 25 minutes it took for the remainder meals. Finally all the meals were there. I was a little disappointed in the frozen patty served on 2 slices of white bread, didn't know I ordered a MacDonald's burger melt? For the price of $11 I expected real meat and a bun! The waitress was slow and took a long time to get things when asked, she pretty much ignored her tables for long periods of time. A member of the kitchen came out and proceeded to bang on the window between the bar and dining room to get someone's attention, very rude, loud and unprofessional. I will never eat here again and would highly recommend people seek other options as they are overpriced for the quality of food and lack any sort of relaxing atmosphere. read more

I used to go here 2-3 times a month! Then all of a sudden they changed the menu and increased the prices so much! The service got so bad also! Not sure what happened but it USED to be great :( not worth it anymore read more

Great service, but someone should smack the cook. Couldn't not get waffle fries if they came with the dish, you couldn't get the portuguese steak without the GT chips. although you can get whatever side you want, you cant leave something off the plate. bisque nasty, brisket on nachos (not a good idea), The waitress told us we couldn't get the steaks without the GT chips because thats the way the chef wants it. read more

My girlfriend and I tried this place the other night on our way home. She ordered the BBQ tips and I had the Tasty Burger that's made with ground steak/chourico/bacon... sounds good right? Well it was about 9:00pm when the waitress came over to drop the food off, but that's no excuse for poor customer service. She plopped the food off on the table and ran back to the kitchen to hide for the entire time we ate.... I didn't even have enough time to ask for another water before she left. She just dropped my food next to our empty cups and ran away. I bit into my burger and the middle was COMPLETELY RAW... Now I'm not a picky overdone/underdone guy... I realize I'm at a Tavern in Wareham, not Peter Lugers lol, but this was RAW. Like would've given me food poisoning raw. DISGUSTING. So I sat.... and I sat..... and I sat.... waiting for my waitress to come walking by but no rush luck. After my girlfriend ate for 15 minutes, and then we waiting for another 15 minutes I couldn't take it anymore. I flagged down another waitress and asked them to send our waitress over because not only did I have raw food sitting on my plate for the last half hour, we were also done for 15 minutes and just being ignored. She finally came over after she was told to, and asked me if I wanted another burger. Ummm no I don't want to wait for another burger and eat it in front of my girlfriend for 20 Minutes while she has no food, and I basically had to beg just to get it off the bill. She didn't even apologize. I wish I had taken pictures of the burger but oh well... I will NEVER being going back here and if you plan on trying this place, plan on getting food poisoning.... Just had my second dinner at The Gateway and just like the first time I liked the atmosphere and the food was OK. But what I hated the second time was the crashing of the plates as the tables got bussed. It is a pet peeve of mine that no one should have to pay for a meal and then listen to plates and silverware crashing into bins. The first time we ate here we ate right by the front door so this was a non issue but this time it was so distracting that we almost left, and it was not even that busy, just crash after crash. In my opinion the food can be great but such a terrible distraction ruins the evening. It is noisy in here with a lot of people in a small place but not so noisy that it would normally ruin my night but crashing dishes will. Food ok atmosphere terrible. read more

I will say the deck was great but the food not so much. My wife had the 2 lobsters for $25 (great deal) and there was nothing wrong with them but the sides were not so good. The sweet potato fries and the fried zucchini had a funky color and didn't taste good at all...CHANGE THE OIL IN YOUR FRYER...I had the scallop dinner, don't waste the $25 (way overpriced) and not good. This place is a pretty regular spot for my fiancé and me. As I love to sit and have a few drinks at the bar, the food is really not that good. I have had quite a bit of their menus items and overall, nothing great (however I do enjoy the wings). I tried the ribs this last time going and couldn't really eat them. The quality of ribs they have is disgusting, the meat was mushy and the flavor was not good at all. The whole plate was really just a mess. The environment is okay, the bartenders are very nice and attentive. Other than just going for some keno and a few cocktails, I wouldn't go for a good meal. read more

The food and the service are great at the Gateway. I really love it there. I had the fried clams and the portion size was great. They also have a back porch now which wasn't there the last time I visited. The only reason it's not getting five starts is that the parking lot was crazy full and there was an hour wait for a table on a Saturday night. It is also pretty expensive for the area. Two of us each had two drinks and meals and it cost us 90 dollars. I'll be back to visit because the gateway is a tradition when I'm in town, but, there are other options to avoid the wait and places that are a little cheaper. read more

We can walk to the Gateway from our house so it's definitely a place we eat at often enough. Really really busy every night which means that lots of times we go somewhere else, but that is good for business. The bar tenders are really friendly and the food is decent. I've said it before and I'll say it again. This place can't be beat! Great staff, awesome food, large portions and they won't break your wallet (half price apps after 4 , mon.- thurs.). Size of the sandwiches are enough for 2 meals. They also throw one heck of a Christmas party! read more

This is always one of our regular spots when we are at the cottage in Marion. Opened the cottage yesterday for the season and headed for The GT. They were not on their A Game yesterday. For Apps we got Fried Pickles and Onion Rings. Pickles were great, but the Onion Rings were so thin and brittle that they would breaks while picking them up. One of us got the Chili, which was luke warm at best, another couple split the Stuffed Peppers, which were very tasty, but again, luke warm at best. Our 4th person got a Lobster Salad, which was huge and I was told it was fantastic. The waitress was great, and we hinted that the food wasn't great, but didn't want to press the issue, since it is not the waiter / waitress fault when there is an issue with food. read more

Gateway 1/2 price Apps at the Bar is my husband's and my favorite winter weekend thing to do. It gets dark here so early in the winter, but Gateway is always warm and inviting. The service is great, and we always meet interesting people while we're there. read more

Food quantity seems to be shrinking while prices escalate. Chicken caesar salad used to be much larger. Now using a square bowl with far less quantity of lettuce however price is $15. Most specials are extremely overpriced for what the Gateway is a "Tavern". Prices on specials are what you would find at a fine dining establishment..which Gateway is NOT. The dining room is excruciatingly LOUD. Really needs some type of sound absorption products installed ASAP. Great selection of beer, wine & cocktails. read more

Shocked at the good reviews, I'm guessing it's the faithful bar patrons. In full transparency, I also just wrote a review on TripAdvisor because it was that bad. Quality and service have really declined. The menu is huge and I think the kitchen just can't keep up with it. Hostess had such an attitude, with every table she sat. All the servers i observed would be gone for 15 minutes at a time. Many tables around us also complaining about service and food. I was happy to be on porch a d not stuffed inside with all the huge parties .....everyone looked hot and hungry. Wanted to love this place again but unfortunately, this will be our last visit. read more

Went for a late Sunday lunch with the husband. Despite the rainy weather the out door dining area was pretty busy and inside was even busier. We were seated pretty quickly and our drink orders were taken pretty quickly but service overall was pretty slow. I recommend the philly cheese steak egg roll appetizer- they were delicious. For my meal I had the lobster roll which was impressive at a half pound of lightly dressed lobster. No celery or other fillers-just straight up lobster but served very strangely on a sub roll not the traditional buttered and toasted split top hot dog roll. But the abundance of lobster meant I could forgive that . My husband ordered their version of a shake and bake pork chop. Was supposed to be a double cut boneless chop but instead he got 2 smaller boneless chops. And the shake and bake coating was weirdly wet and not what you would expect when you hear "shake and bake". Granted it was their version so they can take creative freedom I suppose. It came with mashed potatoes which he said were cold and corn on the cob. The server was efficient and courteous it just took a really long time to get drink refills, to get our main course, to have her come back and check on us after getting the desert menu. Not sure why that was other than it was pretty chaotic and seemed liked the severs were all over the place instead of having their own sections. It was just ok. We will probably go back and give them another shot. This indoor outdoor thing all restaurants are dealing with will take some figuring out I'm sure so I won't hold them completely responsible for our experience today. read more

This is my new favorite restaurant. The menu in huge but everything I have had on it , has been terrific. The lobster roll was so delicious. The waitstaff is great. Went here for the first time. We were disappointed we didn't get to sit on the deck but it was full. The food was good, but I would have ordered something else once I saw other things coming out of the kitchen. I just got a chicken sandwich, but once I saw other things I was jealous! The service was a bit slow, but at least three other parties walked in with us, and a lot of the tables that were seated already looked like they had just gotten there. We will go back and try other things and give it another chance. Next time I would like to wait to sit outside as it looked really nice out there. read more

I grew up in Wareham and the Gateway Tavern has always been the best restaurant in town. I no longer live nearby, but every time I'm home it's literally my first stop off the plane for dinner (and more than likely the first of many meals over the course of my stay). I just came back from one of said trips and it was no exception. Whether I'm getting an entree from the endless list of specials, or just having some nachos at the bar, it's always the best. The servers and bartenders are sweet, friendly, and accommodating. I don't recall ever having an issue with the food but if I did I know that someone would take care of it. I also love that every time I visit, I notice different things that management has done to better the restaurant. Whether it's adding a jukebox, starting a trivia night, or remodeling the bar, the place is constantly improving. Can't wait to come home in November and see what new tricks they have up their sleeves! read more

Good food, good drinks and decent prices. Friendly wait staff and live music on the weekends make for a good time when you are in the area. I don't recommend the crowded dining room but the bar area is great. Gets pretty busy and can be a decent wait but its worth it. Grab a beer at the bar and hang out. read more
