I had a great lunch here while I was passing through! I saw the menu on Yelp and I decided to check the Gateway Cafe out, and I'm so happy I did. My server was very kind and helpful and gave a perfect recommendation which was the steak salad and French onion soup. I also ordered a side of mashed potatoes and gravy because it was a necessary decision. The steak was cooked perfectly the way I like it, and had very nice flavor and the salad was yummy. Why five stars? First, this place was open when we were hungry! I know it's a small town, but it is near a major interstate - most restaurants were closed on the Tuesday we made our stop. Second, the meal was a great value - especially in this time of inflation. I highly recommend the crab cakes. I know, not Maryland, but they were really good and about a third of the price you'd pay in Baltimore. Third, the service was the best! I order the crab roll well while seating there I look downstairs they had one guy rolling them and had another guy taking to kitchen both had no gloves on so being touch two times bear hands. Would've liked to see some variation in types of beers if you're gonna have such a limited set of handles. This is only getting a three because of the time it took to get some of our food and the craziness of the night. We went here on a Saturday night, and we only had to wait about 10 minutes for a table. We noticed a lot of people were there, and many of the parties did not have their food when we sat down. One of the people in our party ordered a steak salad, another person ordered the crabcake appetizer and a bowl of soup, and the last person just ordered the crab cake appetizer. It took 30 minutes for the soup to come out, which I think is a little bit crazy. The rest of the dinner came out between 10 and 15 minutes after that. We made it to the area to attend our first Ground Hog's Day event in nearby Punxsutawney, and had a room in DuBois. We found The Gateway Cafe as a recommended casual dinner place. It was a Weds. night so karaoke was a pleasant find. Most tables were occupied with 2 friendly wait staffers working the room. They did their best to attend to customers. I ordered the drunken cheese burger - it was huge and delicious. My wife ordered the shrimp salad. It was loaded with more than the 10 shrimp described on the menu. This place is a lot of fun! My boyfriend and I recently attended here for some drinks, bar food, and to sing some songs. When we got in, we did not expect that the place would have a whole nice-looking bar on one side and on the other a cozy dining area with a DJ table. And we didn't expect that it would be so clean either! Most restaurants you see would have at least one or two pieces of trash here and there but this place was spotless. The food here is VERY tasty. I had a shrimp and fries basket, and my boyfriend had some good looking wings. They gave me a LOT of shrimp and a good amount of fries for just $9. And for drinks they had a large menu--I mean, they're a bar--and I had some sweet wine while my boyfriend had some strawberry lemonade. It was all very very good for bar food, I was expecting it to be greasy but it really wasn't all that bad! As for entertainment, the karaoke catalogue is HUGE. I saw they had everything from 2Chainz to Led Zeppelin. I sang Alice In Chains, Aerosmith, Skid Row, and Kate Bush. My boyfriend couldn't sing because he was feeling very sick from the seasonal allergies he had, but he cheered me on nonetheless! Overall, this restaurant/karaoke bar was so much fun! Great food and friendly service. I got food to go and it was packed well and it was hot. The wings were perfectly cooked in the hot sauce. They just the right amount of hot. Their homemade potato chips were good with the ranch dressing and I also got a side of Sriracha ranch. Onion rings were crispy and their sloppy Joe wasn't a red sauce sloppy Joe. It was more like a chopped hamburger with onions and a clear sauce. Not sure if it was my cup of tea. But overall I would eat there again in a heartbeat. Tried it twice. First time the Italian sun was all grease...it was dripping! And second time got the turkey burger with a baked potato. The turkey burger you can tell was frozen previously and was topped with cheese and the most disgusting avocado I've ever tasted. It was super soggy and tasted old. Along with that my baked potato when I went to cut it was mostly black from being rotten. They didn't even take the potato off the order or apologize...On a separate occasion my husband went and he waited at the bar for about thirty minutes and no one came out. So he left. The food was very good but my chicken n asparagus was very good but I thought the portions was a little on the small side. Wanted to grab a bite to eat after a long day at the hospital with a loved one. After looking for places nearby we decided on here because it was a favorite of my sister and her family. Walked in only to not be greeted by the waitresses or host. Waited and waited to be seated. There was a large party that left right before us but still.... greet your next customers and let them know you'll "be right with them". Upon waiting finally someone asked "how many" and said "well we are expecting a band, so I can't seat you over there" (it was 2:30 in the afternoon, almost positive the band wasn't going to be there for a few more hours). She sat us, took our drink orders and messed them all up. Asked for more straws, took forever. Ordered our food only to have a dry burger, dry grilled chicken on a salad and a child size mac&cheese for an adult even though that's not what was ordered the Italian baked hoagie wasn't baked. The Gateway was a regular spot for me when I lived in DuBois. Excellent food including fresh cut fries, outstanding fish sandwich and hamburgers to name a few. The standard 6-7 beers on tap and a wide assortment of bottled as well. Very comfortable atmosphere enhanced by prompt personable staff. Returning after 31 years I was curious to see if it had changed like so many other things. And you know what it didn't. It is just as inviting and comfortable as ever. This place really made me consider giving my first and second ex wives another chance! I ate here twice. I heard all good things about this place so I decided to go there for the first time and I had ordered their homemade lasagna. It STUNK! My lasagna put it to shame. I then remembered I saw a picture of wings online and was rather confused because they weren't on the menu. I kindly asked the waitress if they had wings and she replied, "we do they are just not on the menu." As you all know, I'm a wing guy and I'm not going to lie...This secret wing menu item got me a little aroused. I naturally ordered their hottest wings, and they came in a reasonable time (not really a good sign because all wing people know it takes at least 20 mins for good wings). The wings also stunk. I was going to yelp my experience after the first time, but I didn't because I was afraid my harsh review was going to put them out of business. Okay, so fast forward about 2 months and for some reason I agreed to go back. I ordered the drunken cheeseburger this time because I saw a guy get it the first time and immediately knew the lasagna was a bad choice. The cheeseburger came and BAH GOD it was awesome! It was also the first burger I had in awhile that was actually cooked to my order. Rare. I loved every second of this burger;however, I caution you this is not a first date kind of burger. You are going to leave wanting to shower because of all the cheesy goodness on your face. Don't even use a napkin until you finish the entire burger because that's how messy it is. I definitely get why it's called the drunken burger. Best burger I have had so far in this area. The Gateway was packed both times so you know it is good.
