You might be put off a little by the creaking sign outside an old house but this is a gem everyone should go to. You walk into the old house to a super cool bar area and three rooms of the house as the dining room. We went on a Friday night and got lucky to get a seat. Our waitress was wonderful and was only one of two working that night. My husband, parents and I all got different items on the menu and all were so different. Everything on the menu were normal items but they all had some Korean twist...I heard Wednesday is Korean food day and it is a must. I had the shrimp scampi over rice...really good. My husband loves his beef tips over noodles. It had the most interesting flavor. My mom got the stuffed shrimp with veggies and rice. We will for sure go back to try other twists on the menu! read more

We were in town for our daughter's graduation and wanted a nice dinner to celebrate. She picked the Nelson House and we wished we had found it earlier! They have a full bar and the cocktails were well-mixed. The rolls are nice and salads were fine (mixed greens with cucumber, tomato, and onion). The crab-stuffed steak - and both people who ordered it enjoyed it. I had the Veal Romano and it was very tender and melted in your mouth. The sauce was rich and delicious and the pasta was nicely cooked. Another friend liked the stuffed salmon. My husband had the shrimp scampi and thought it was good, but not exceptional. The ambience is cozy and service was friendly and attentive. Prices are quite reasonable and portions are a nice size. If we are ever in town again, we will definitely be back! read more

I went there specifically for the Korean food they have on Wednesday nights. It does not disappoint. They have to be losing money on this meal. $11 or $12 for whet they call a Korean sampler. It's a really large meal. I was stuffed. It was delicious and the staff there is very attentive and kind. read more

This restaurant is in an old house. If your looking for trendy place keep looking. Food was excellent. I had shrimp scampi and other parties got fried haddock and stuffed flounder. 5 stars for all. We got salad and soup right away. Got entree in 50 minutes. Beer was cold. Had good selection of beers. Most enjoyable dinner. Waitress was great and on top of thing. The minute you walk in to this old home turned restaurant you are hit with the overwhelming odor of stale cigarette smoke. Should have turned around and walked out. The only thing good there was the margarita. The deep fried duck was overlooked, as was the veal, which evidently was also deep fried( is that not a sin? ). The crab cakes were just plane bad. The Nelson House is my all time favorite restaurant. It's a quaint/come as you are little restaurant. The service is great and food is to die for! I have never eaten at the Nelson House and go there only for drinks when I'm in the area visiting family. With that said, I always have consistently good service and an overall good experience -- I have never been disappointed by the Nelson House. There is usually room to sit at the bar and if not, they're fine with you taking over the dining tables later in the evening. The bartenders are all very friendly and prompt and the drink prices are reasonable. Beer is downright inexpensive for domestic drafts (no specials, it doesn't seem, but given the normal price there isn't really a need), and the mixed drinks are reasonable as well. The owner is really sweet as well -- she's the type of nice that make you want to continue to patronize her establishment. She's usually around in the building in the evenings and she stops into the bar from time to to chat with the customers. The last time we were there, it was the anniversary of the bar opening. We had a large group and the owner sent over several free pitchers. It was a nice touch for a group of people who make this their go-to when they're in the area. The decor is kind of fun as well and worth noting. They have some old Dubois Brewing Company memorabilia as well as an array of other interesting, kitschy items. What can't you say about the Nelly? An iconic place to eat and/or drink in DuBois. The staff is fantastic and the food is even better. Whether you are stopping by for a drink or staying for dinner, they have it covered. For those complaining about the wait, get an appetizer and chill out. I loved it! Whenever we first came in we thought it was gonna be a little pricey... But they're prices aren't too bad. I looked around at the place and I told my parents, "I feel under dressed" ( I was wearing a Pirate shirt) hahaha! I had the Veal Parmesan and it was real veal and it was very tender. We got fresh rolls that was actually warm and salad that wasn't 90% crunchy. I highly recommend goin'! You can make a reservation or just walk in. We just so happened to go in when it was slow. I have never gotten on yelp before..as the only bartender at the Nelson House..this is a great tool for me to see all the wonderful things ppl have said and to see some of the negative comments..I have been at this job since my 18th birthday..crazy to say almost 20 years has gone by...and just to put it out there i am there everyday we are open...soo that being said.we at the nelson hope you are not in a hurry our food is fresh and is made as you order..we want you to relax and enjoy your evening..if you are on time restrictions our place is not for you..my boss does all the cooking that is everyday for the past 25 years...i can only say to the ppl who were negative....shes only human and she loves doing what she does she is a wonderful person who makes me want perfection in that dining room..please if you are in the DuBois area come on over we will treat ya like family..my name is alex and ill make sure your dining experience is as pleasant and fun as that aunt we all love to spend time with lol...welcome to The Nelson House read more

LOVE this place and try to get there every week. The staff and owner are really fantastic, attentive, and conscientious. Tuesday nights have authentic Korean food specials, though my favorite is probably the Chicken Cordon Bleu or the Stuffed Tomato. We also love going there for drinks at the end of the day since the prices are affordable. The beer selection is decent, but the bartenders can make some fantastic mixed drinks and specialty drinks. You will quickly feel welcomed since the waitresses are quick to remember your order and greet you by name. If you are planning on going for dinner on a Friday or Saturday, definitely call for a reservation. If you can't get in, order take out. It's worth it. read more

This place has given some of the worst eating experiences ever. I have given them many chances and many times they have failed. It takes a good 2.5 to 3.5 hours to eat and leave. You'd think for making you wait so long your meal would at least be decent. Well if you thought that you're surely mistaken. I would not recommend this place to ANYONE. read more

I wish I would have eaten here years ago. I came here on a wed. I always heard rumor that it was Korean food wed. They had a sampler of Korean food as the special. You get a plate full of different things.. Amazing things! I wish I could go back every week, but I typically work that night. These are the type of places that people need to frequent. The local place doing great things. not the mediocre places that are all flash, serving overpriced crap food and beer. Come here! They also have a full bar and play cool music. What a nice hidden gem in DuBois. Always wanted to try the Nelson House and finally was able to get a chance. The menu was way better than we expected. They have options for everyone. They also have menu items that are different. I had the french onion soup and it was wonderful. I'm almost postitive they made it with some wine and it's the best i have had in a long time. Side salad was cut fresh and the dinner rolls were soft and fresh as well. They also use the local creamery butter and thats always a plus to me. Then, surprisingly, my main dish had a baked potato and also a veggie. I wasn't expecting the side of vegetables, i figured the salad was my side. Prices are very fair and the food was wonderful. The owner was there talking to all the customers and was also helping his staff. It definitely has a hometown feel to it and the staff was very nice. Our drinks never went dry and our waitress was never far if we needed her. I definitely will be returning to try korean night im wednesdays as well for other dishes. It's probabaly my top 3 favorite restaurants in this area. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

Tonight was my second visit to the Nelson House and a first for the other 3 in my party. Dinners were delicious and service was great. Two of us had veal parmigiana, one had spaghetti and I had New Orleans Pork. We will definitely be returning! Highly recommend. read more

Tasty food in a long time ago atmosphere. Eating there is like stepping back in time. We were there just after Christmas so the place was jam packed with a huge Christmas tree and all sorts of Xmas stuff scattered around. Large beer selection. Interesting starter selection.
